[Wikisource-l] Wikisource Android Apps

2021-10-19 Thread Jayanta Nath
Greetings All,

We are happy to announce that the CIS-A2K team have been initiated to
develop the Wikisource Android apps for Wikisource reader. Over the last
couple of months, a group of devs from the Tamil language community have
been putting together an Android Wikisource App for us. They have been
finished their POC of the app. In the coming month, we will engage some
developers to develop iOS apps for the same. We think it's finally gotten
to a good state for people to start hacking on it.
For those just wanting to get started here are the links Initial code:
https://github.com/ViluppuramGLUG/WikisourceApp feature ideas landing page:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikisource_Apps How can you help?
In the coming month, we may help to do the following ... * Fork the code
and help us with open bug requests * Critique the code and suggest a
cleanup * Start to hack on new features UI. * Localization for the user
interface
Also, you may comment/suggest/feedback our meta talk page

[Wikisource-l] Indic language Wikisource Skill Share

2020-04-08 Thread Jayanta Nath
Hi Indian Wikisource Community,

As COVID-19 has forced the Wikimedia communities to stay at home and like
many other affiliates, CIS-A2K has decided to suspend all offline
activities till 15th September 2020 (or till further notice).I present to
you for an online training session for future coming months

1. Wikisource Skill Share,[1] a capacity-building initiative, where Indic
Wikisource contributors, both newcomers and experienced, can share
knowledge and skills with each other and clear confusions. Most of the
time, it will be done online on 1:1 basis, so it is just the right time to
participate there if you have not planned to do it or done it already.
Let's learn Wikisource together! I would like to invite experienced Indic
Wikisource contributors and sign your name at Willing to respond section
[2]. Newcomer or any Indic Wikisource contributors are welcome to join the
session with your queries and doubts.

2. Intensive Personalized Training (or IPT),[3] this also a
capacity-building initiative, where Indic Wikisource contributors,
especially newcomers could come with his/her queries and doubts. I, myself
will share my knowledge and skills with each contributor and clear
confusions. It will be done online on a 1:1 basis, so it is just the right
time to participate there if you have not planned to do so.

3. Online Proofread-edithon for all 12 Indic Wikisource language projects.
We are planning for an indic level online proofreadthon from 1 May 2020 to
10 May 2020. The book of the subject will be the classical literature of
your languages. We’ll share details about this in a separate email in a
couple of days.

[Wikisource-l] Indic Wikisource IRC 2018

2018-08-30 Thread Jayanta Nath
 Dear All,

Firstly I would like to thank you for the continuous support and
contribution to the Wikimedia movement.

You are aware that after implemented Google OCR into Indic Wikisource, they
grew rapidly, reaching a total of 50,000+ pages proofreaded in 11 Indic
Wikisource languages. For updated page/ digitized content you go here
<https://wikisource.org/wiki/Wikisource:Indic_Wikisource_Stats>[2]

But Indic community members have not got any chance to meet each other and
share best practices of their community. Keeping this in mind we are
planning to have an IRC[1] on 9th September 2018 (@8:00 PM) for the Indic
Wikisource community. Please suggest more Agenda for the IRC in Google Doc

2018-03-19 Thread Jayanta Nath
Hi Balaji,

Just past year we have completed our Bengali 10th Years Anniversary
Proofreading Contest.

https://bn.wikisource.org/wiki/WSCONTEST10, you can follow our Rule.

The big problem is we have no tool to count the Proofreading. As like
wikipedia have fountain https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Fountain ,
https://tools.wmflabs.org/fountain/editathons/, so you have to do it
manually.

I have knocked some many person to developed tool , but its not developed.

2018-02-04 Thread Jayanta Nath
I have met few Bengali Writer and family member of writer who had died. .

Few of them ready to give us for permission to us. But they are not to
agree to release it Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License

creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/

Their main concern about commercial use of their text, if derivative in
translation, it will be not any issue of them. They have no issue for
published at Wikisource. So what should be the licence and how we
published in Bengali Wikisource?

But they are ready to release all their book at
Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs

We have a new problem to face in the coming months assuming countries
ratify the Trans Pacific Partnership
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trans-Pacific_Partnership

The text of the agreement has been released in the last 24 hours, early
commentary is indicating that copyright changes will occur restoring
copyright to some works that are currently PD.
http://boingboing.net/2015/11/06/how-tpp-will-clobber-canadas.html

According reports this will affect media sourced in Canada where copyright
will be extended from 50-70 years meaning that image sin this period may
need to be deleted both on commons and on en:wp, Australian sourced images
face a similar issue as will other countries.

Rather than a piece meal commons copyright battle, and a duplicate one on
en:wp being lead by unqualified wikilawyers resulting in project
discrepancies. I'm calling on the community to take more holistic approach
and request that the WMF ask for its legal eagles to give an edict we can
take or communities to explain what will happen in each jurisdiction as the
TPP is ratified.

This will also give us guidance as to how Affiliates can approach and
support activities locally to ensure material that is already freely
available remains so.

Google's OCR which apparently is most accurate OCR
we have seen so far, works really good for all the major South Asian
scripts:

Here are test cases of many Indian scripts: https://goo.gl/3X75iR.
Except Gurmukhi most scripts are working really good.

This could be really useful for Indian language Wikimedians and will
come handy for digitization of printed and scanned text. Here is an
animated tutorial for Wikimedians to use this tool for

 Wikisources are historically understaffed :-),

 try in ml:

Apart from the already tried and tremendously successful models of
school-wise student model and general community competition (for prizes in
kind or just for credential certificates), we are now pondering upon a new
 idea:

 Use secondary social network collaboration.

As an example, if you have formed (or if you could grow from now,) a very
vibrant Wikimedia or other language-focused community network in Facebook,
you can open up an appropriately scaled competition model within that.
Many people are now seeking independent localization tools and input
 methods just to use Facebook.

(And BTW, thanks to Facebook, which I always detested, for making a great
invisible revolution among mainstream local community members, that most
other models are still struggling to achieve!)

In Malayalam, now we have several such large communities each one
specializing in their own arenas (eg. Butterflies, Plants, Birds, Grammar,
Films and Film Songs etc. etc.). They all share the idea that most of such
shared knowledge and digital text and images shall ultimately end up in WM
 pools.

 So, imagine a world where,
A Tamil community in Facebook takes up this project. (May or may not be
with an organized competition spirit). Each member picks up a few pages one
at a time, and post it back to Facebook. A small team collects this and
pipes to Wikisource. Eventually, the volume gets completely in.

Just imagine... and it shall happen!

PS. Why in FB and then why not directly in Wikisourse?
You know why! The interface makes a big difference. Let's admit that!

 Hi,

Tamil Development Board (an autonomous institution under Government of
Tamilnadu) releases its Encyclopedia (10 volumes, 7407 pages) and
Children's Encyclopedia (10 volumes, 969 pages) under Creative Commons
license. Tamil Wikipedians lead by Prof. C. R. Selvakumar and Prof. P.
 R. Nakkeeran, (Director, Tamil Virtual Academy) spearheaded this
initiative coinciding with Tamil Wikipedia's 10 years celebrations.

An official confirmation (in Tamil) can be seen at

 https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/46/Letter_from_Tamil_Development_Board_donating_20_volumes_of_encyclopedia_in_Tamil_under_Creative_Commons_license.jpeg

Scanned copies of these works are already available at

 http://tamilvu.org/library/kulandaikal/lku00/html/lku00ind.htm

At Tamil Wikipedia, we are discussing how we can get this content
typed and transferred to WikiSource. Doing so can be a good model to
encourage more such works to be released in public domain.

Following are two options I can think of:

 1. Volunteers type all the content. Besides taking years to complete,
this won't do justice for the value of time of volunteers who can do
more valuable work than typing mechanically.

A program like IT@School present in Kerala or a contest can encourage
more people to join this effort but not all communities can't emulate
 this model successfully.

 2. Request WMF to give a grant to the owner of the content and let
them hand over the typed content to Wikisource volunteers who will
 upload and wikify the content.

This will ensure maintaining the spirit of volunteerism and yet
getting the work done in a professional and time bound manner.

Numerous works in Wikisource are such ready made content uploaded
already in the web through other projects like Project Gutenberg.

If providing grants to non-Wikimedia organizations is an issue, a
grant towards this can be given to community / chapter who will then
 outsource the typing work.

I welcome community's input on any other model for this as India has
vast amount of literature and works like this are waiting to be
transfered to Wikisource. This is one area where we can add lot of
content to Wiki projects at once.

 Ravi

Re: [Wikisource-l] Multiple page move with prefix book title

2014-04-15 Thread Jayanta Nath
Thank you Manoj Billinghurst for your valued suggestion. I have been
working about 1 year in Bengali Wikisource very deeply with the
proofreading work. Previously few user worked only on PD text importing
from various site with out using proofreading felicity although that was
implemented in 2009. So now in bnws, there are about 6100 text without
proofread, and as per stats *0.38%* [1] proofread for my present work.

A) About Gitangali

I know there are three version in Bengali, English Version , Bengali
Transliteration Version [3] but we have separate Bengali works [2] which
is proofreading now from scan book published in 1913 found in DLI. [4]

So I am not confident with English version at Bengali Wikisource, because
it is for Bengali version. So my proposal for delete this [3], as we have
already English work at ENWS . [5]. Our community strength is very low at
bnws. So I am asking here for best practice.

B) Multiple page move with prefix book title

My present work collaboration at BNWS is proofreading all text content
which already present (PagesWithoutScans)[6] with scan book.[7].
And reorganized/ rearrange all page as per WS MOS. Thats why we need some
help to Multiple page move with prefix book title as I describe above.

[Wikisource-l] Multiple page move with prefix book title

2014-04-14 Thread Jayanta Nath
Dear all,

I am again from Bengali Wikisource for help. Can it be possible to Multiple
page move with prefix book title? Some user create one Poetry Book
Gitanjali by Rabindranath Tagore, with all peotry with first stanza line
( 170 poetry) as a title (NS0). You can see English version [1]. I want to
move all respective first stanza line poetry to respectively
Gitanjali/1, Gitanjali/2,Gitanjali/3 .

Not only this Poetry Book, Maximum all Poetry Book was created like this
way wrongly in our Wikisource.

Please give some advice/help to do this easily, either bot, semi-bot (AWB).

Jayanta Nath

I am glad to note that you have taken a look at Abhishek's existing

of detail the current state of the work? The voting piece is somewhat
based on the concept that a larger number of users of the system can
help train the system for higher degree of accuracy.

ankur.org.in will be putting in an application as a mentoring
organization. However, the acceptance in GSoC2014 is always subject to

I would recommend that you spend this time catching up with Abhishek
and also Jayanta in order to be able to understand a real-life
utilization of your project (should ankur.org.in be selected and, you
 are accepted as a student)

Gujarati Wikisource has achieved yet another milestone on its second
birthday (29.03.2014) completed uploading full 50 books which has come in
 public domain.

The collection of these 50 books includes well known Gujarati literary
creations in the form of Autobiography, Novels, Plays, Collection of Poems,
Essays, Moral Stories etc. This includes works of prominent writers such as
Mahatma Gandhi, Zaverchand Meghani, Kavi Nhanalal, Surasinhji Gohil,
Educationist Gijubhai Badheka, Kavi Dalapatram, Ramanlal Nilkanth etc.

This feat was achieved in 2 years time.

As OCR is not available, volunteers of Gujarati wiki Community have
typed this books. The community proceeds in a planned manner. A book is
selected and its announcement is made at common platform on source.
Volunteer interested joins the project. Chapters are distributed among the
particants and proof reading is done. Once completed, another book is
 undertaken.

Kindly inform this on Indian Community List

I think it may be relevant to share the context of this too . This may be
helpful and useful for other wikisource communities. I am part of the
Organizing Team and our organization , Swathanthra Malayalam Computing is
one of the partners for this

 1. Unlike Latin based languages , Most of the Indian languages does not
have a functional OCR solution. So for us the digitalising means typing
the pages and proofreading them .
 2. Even though there are many state run institutions and libraries are
engaged in scanning books for their digitization , The public domain works
are not available in most cases . Initiatives like GLAM s not much suited
for small librarys and state institutions.
 3. In short the absence / Way to thank library for preserving books till
they release under public domain with proper media attention becomes a
difficult task . This program experimenting a way to thank Govt institution
named Keral Sahithya academi via media attention for preserving and
donating the public domain copies to many books to wikisource .
4.Wikisource can be used as a way of training new users to familiarize
with mediawiki and wikisyntax . A Typing+proofreading competition with
declared prizes anyway attracts more users and attention . within first 5
days 80+ new contributors and 798 pages added to Malayalam wikisource
 5. We Succeeded in getting IT@School program of Govt of Kerala as an
official partner and created a seperate competition for schools . So
Students under the guidance of teachers can involve in Malayalam
wikisource and get exposure for wikimedia projects
  6. This helps in building more references for wikipedia articles . This
is an important concern for many languages without much digital archives

Thanks to Vishnu , Director of CIS-A2K for initially coming up with an
idea of running a proofreading contest in malayalam wikipedia by offering
some Devices . This helped us to start exploring the possibilities and
expanding the program with more partners .

In last October Malayalam wikisource community released a 2.0 version of
its offline CD . This is the next major endeavour

I still think the better workflow is to

 1. upload the files in Internet Archive. If you have tiff files, this is
 perfect.
You can put them in a zipped file and upload everything on Internet

This is very good as Internet Archive is great at converting files, doing
OCR and stuff like that. You can find the instructions here too:

 2. when everything is ready (all the files are created), go with
 https://toolserver.org/~tpt/iaUploadBot/step1.php :
you put the id inside, and it will upload the file on Commons.

 3. you're set: you go on Wikisource and create the Index.

 Hi all.
In Italian wikisource we are experiencing huge issues in namespace page:
I enter in Edit mode, and I don't see the Edit form nor the scan.
i just see the editoolbar, with the Save button, the SAL radiobuttons
  and everything.
I have disabled all my Gadgets in Preferences.
I don't have the same problem editing en.source.

 Do you experience similar problems?

Well, you could contact as Wikimedia India the DLI, and try to set up a
 partnership.

 I follow the below workflow...

 1) Download books from Digital Library of India ( single page single tif
 file).

Maybe you can use a script to download all the TIFF files of a book. Put
them in a single folder, sorted. Zip that folder as I said
(FILENAME_images.zip). The IA software will do all the rest: it will make
you a PDF, a DJVU, everything by itself. the trick is giving him all the
single images in a zip folder with that name.

 2) Upload as PDF (You can put them in a zipped file and upload
everything on Internet Archive with the namefile FILENAME_images.zip.
Then the software will do everything by itself. This is good for me.)
 Let's
try next time. But when I upload as PDF , I cannot find any DJVU file.

 3)Transfer file in commons.
 https://toolserver.org/~tpt/iaUploadBot/step1.php this utility is only
for upload DJVU file. ( If I upload FILENAME_images.zip at archive.org,
 Are they converted as DJVU?)

Then, as IA has finished, you take the id (not of the djvu, but of the
book itself on IA: for example, here (
 https://archive.org/details/fioannisnauarrog00nava) the id is
 fioannisnauarrog00navahttps://archive.org/details/fioannisnauarrog00nava
 .
 Then everything is ok.

upload to show a piece of it), nevertheless it's so user-rewarding that I
think that this is a minor fault.

About ePub bug: I presume that's mainly a css issue into ePub, and that id
could be solved finding the right css to export; but I could not test this
 hypothesis as it deserve.

I hope to extend the tool to make it run everywhere - simply adding what
needed to tell him explicitely the basename of File/Index/Page to upload.

 Alex

 2013/11/27 David Cuenca dacu...@gmail.com

 Aubrey, Alex,

Thank you very much for creating this tool and for sharing it. It is
 really amazing.
On ca-ws we only found one bug: when exporting the document into ePub or
pdf (both with the EpubExporter and the Book Tool), the coordinates are not
exported rightly and the cropping has an offset. It might be an
incompatibility issue with the ePub exporter or something that we have not
 configured right. Example:
 https://ca.wikisource.org/wiki/Test
 http://wsexport.wmflabs.org/tool/book.php?lang=caformat=epubpage=Test

Aleator said that it could be useful for Wikipedia, and I cannot agree
more. Sometimes we spend a lot of time cropping and uploading, when it can
be done much faster with this.

To test it, go on your oldwikisource account,
 and in User:YOU/vector.js copy this:

 importScript(User:Alex_brollo/cornersDependencies.js);
 importScript(User:Alex brollo/corners.js);
 importStylesheet(User:Alex brollo/common.css);

The tool will appear under Tools, and it's called Ritaglio immagini
 (crop images).
It opens a window which allows you to select and crop an image directy
 on the page.
It is extremely useful to use illustration directly on the page.
It is usable both in View and Edit mode.

In the Italian Wikisource we have made it a Gadget and button, so it's
 active for everyone.
