I'm wondering if WISPA has missed the boat for the relief effort.

Shouldn't wispa stand behind and work with Part-15 on this one? This isn't a
race to look best, but an effort to put WISPs on the map as reliable and

Re: [WISPA] Helping the Hurricane Victims

2005-09-02 Thread Matt Larsen - Lists
I am putting together an Asterisk box with four phones and long distance
termination for Mac to send to a local shelter. After talking to him
yesterday, the need for telecom down there appears to be intense. There
are lines of people waiting to use phones and even the normal phone
operations at the 911 centers are spotty and intermittent. It's not a
lot, but I hope that it will help some folks out.

We are going to send a newsletter out to our customers to let them know
that we have a contact in Louisiana who is helping out displaced
hurricane victims in his area and to bring donations by our office where
we can collect and send them.

Every bit of effort will help.

am not sending this message to brag about helping or to say one

to challenge other WISPs here to help with donations of time, money,
food, equipment, etc. to Mac or any other effort you feel is worthy
(Joe Laura needs our help for sure also). As you can see below I sent
Mac $250. If you have money to spare and want to see it go straight
to people in need right away (tomorrow) you might want to help Mac by
sending cash through Paypal to his email address below. Thanks for
being there for these folks Mac.

Your payment for $250.00 USD to [EMAIL PROTECTED] has been sent.

Ok John
I'm taking your challenge for 250.00 and raising you 50.00 :)
Mac will see 300.00 tomorrow when the wife gets to work.

Lets see if we can get the bidding higher.

Like you I don't want any glory, but would like to help.
As I sit here in my comfortable living room watching the people in
Louisiana and Mississippi suffering, I have to say it makes me want to
do something.

I can see that many of these peoples lives are completely ruined.
It would be nice if I could drive on down there and get people
internet access, but I think at this point what most of these folks
are needing is money to survive and help put their lives back together.

It is a very sad situation and one that nobody can really ignore.

I am a paying member of Part-15 and WISPA. I will support both.
Most of the people in WISPA are also either paid or non paid members of

First and foremost the help that is needed is what it takes to get these

cash clothes cash and to know that America is behind them.

Internet is important as well, but the first thing these folks need is

I look at these efforts as multi-leveled. There is no one avenue that is
better than another. The fact is that all avenues lead to the same goal

and

that is to help these poor people in need with everything from money to
infrastructure. Arguing about who is better or who is in the lead is
childish in my mind.

I will send Bullit an email today to see if we can cooperate together in
this effort.

Oh lord - here we go - nothing like a good pissin match in the middle of
the morning on Friday eh ?

I definitely applaud Mac for providing the Internet and VOIP to the
shelters his church has setup for the Refugees. We have 4 or 5 shelters
in the area that we are providing internet to - no go on VOIP - we are
not prepared to do it unfortunately.

WISPA does need to stepup and support Part-15.org's efforts as well. To
not minimize what Mac or myself or other WISPs down here have done on a
SMALL scale, this project Bullit is heading will need help. It's time
for you leaders to bury the hatchet and overlook past history for awhile
on this one.

Scriv helping 1 shelter or supporting the efforts of a major Wireless
rollout across 3 states on the coast - well - let's just say -
nevermind. Any help that is provided is worth while - I just can't
believe that WISPA is so weak that it is ONLY ABLE TO HELP 1 INDIVIDUAL
! Get real man !

I can tell you that I have spent all day working on an attempt to work with
Part-15. This isn't about, WISPA, Part-15 or any personal members of either
organization. This IS ALL ABOUT helping those in need. Getting organized
together and using WISP resources efficiently and prudently makes total
sense. We have opened the door to Part-15 and are working with several
manufacturers and people well known to our industry to assist us in this
effort to mend fences with Part-15.

It is time for all members to stop all the criticism and get behind the
effort. Trust me, we are working diligently to get this done. It is a huge
effort, more volunteer help is needed. It's time to pull together. Our
industry can use this effort to our benefit or we can continue to fracture
the industry with criticism of others. The basic fact is this: WISPA
members love and believe in our industry and so do Part-15 members! So what
is the problem here? We just need to remove the personal barriers that have
been built up in the last few years. The only way to do that in my eyes is
to shake hands, offer help to each other and work together going forward
with goals to accomplish great feats for all of our industry.

However I don't think we should "get behind" P-15 effort. I would like
it to be a joint effort by WISPs, not WISPA, P-15, Cisco, or whoever.
Lets do this for the homeless down there with the side benefit of a
little name (WISP) recognition. Not for a specific group to "get all
the glory". I know WISPA is doing this for the right reasons, but
still..Has a WISPA board member contacted P-15? I, as a paid member
of WISPA, want to coordinate with P-15 and make this a joint effort. As
soon as I get paid I will donate.

Rick, I've been on the p-15 list all day, the irc
  chat rooms all evening.

There's a tremendous amount of help
offered. Lots of warm bodies and some very good stuff.

One of the things I'd like to address, is that
there are a LOT of us with small businesses who simply haven't the $$$ to
support ourselves going down there. Cisco, Nortel, and
others "volunteer", but they also find themselves on the receiving end of
contracts later that are often highly profitable and more than make up for
thier expenses "donating" stuff to the cause.

We're never going to see such a
thing. What we donate, we do without any chance of
  recovery.

That dollar we don't make because we're not
answering our phone, or at the job, or that dollar we spend trying to do the
mission... we'll never see again. This makes those
donations, efforts, and willingness on the part of people I KNOW will feel a
lot of pain over doubly more impressive. None of us will get a
contract from LA, AL, MS, FEMA, or anyone else to do rebuilding.

Michael seems to have what I consider a daunting
task ahead of him - not one I'd step up and take on. Same with
Mac, Jim Patient, and others we've seen.I'd love to donate
to all of these... but my bank account has a - sign in front of the
numbers. I have no money to donate. I don't even know
how I'm going to survive here when I"m NOT in the disaster zone... Oh,
the business bills are paid, I have my bandwidth ,and the leases are
paid... I just don't know if I'll have a home in 2 months.
It's that bad for a bit.

But let me carpool with 2 others to foot the
diesel bill, and I'll take a pickup, barrells of fuel in, and work 18 hour
days. I see the pictures of these people on TV and I cannot help
myself. I am so incredibly better off than them. I
have hope. I know my family is safe. I have a good
future. My world won't change much if I take the time and
go. My business won't be hurt much, if at all, if I go. So
how could I not be willing?

And if I am part of one action, that enables
someone to save one life... it will have all been more than worth it. I
don't need or want my name in any paper, or on any list, or spoken
anywhere. I just want to meet my Maker some day and hear "I was hungry
and you fed me, I was sick and you came to me, I was thirsty and you gave me
drink...I was dying and you helped save my life."

Those of you who are and have given...
you're the epitome of what's good and right in this country.
  You're examples to us all.

  God Bless...
