We have a four mile AF24 link that dropped, but not disconnect, in a heavy

The cell companies in California use them and they stick out like a sore

Granted that our model is way different then yours, we are a non-profit
member owned, volunteer operated, coop, but we give everybody 2 up and 2
down (now that we have an AirFiber backhaul) and are still scrambling to
keep up with the members usage (400 members covering 600 square miles).
And, they always want more.

Charging $30 a month. Of course we only have one paid employee. The folks
here in NM are happy to get that as their only alternative is dial-up or
satellite. When CenturyLink finally moves into a neighborhood we actually
encourage new inquires to go with them as we still have tons of folks with
no options other then us.

It cost us about $30K every time we have to upgrade the backbone and back
haul and APs, but luckily we have enough time between upgrades to bank the
funds.

I don't know how you guys can make a profit.

What we have done is offer the same packages across the board. If you
can't get at least the package you want we don't install you.

On Dec 30, 2013, at 21:11, heith petersen wi...@mncomm.com wrote:

We are getting to the point in a lot of our markets that we need to
offer different speed packages. Issue being some markets, being 900 or
slightly sub-par infrastructure, we wouldn’t be able to promote these
packages across the board. Was curious if others are offering packages to
different areas that would not be possible in some? And if so, do you get
any backlash from those who cannot get those packages? Is it appropriate to
offer extended packages to users on one tower when another tower down the
road wouldn’t be capable of these packages? Its bad but we just offer a
residential rate, no matter if that customer can get 1 meg down via Canopy
900 or close to 10 meg on a UBNT SM. I have caught a little heat in an area
where we fired up 900 about 4 years ago to a market that had only
satellite. Then we hooked up a tower in a small town 4 miles away with UBNT
M2 and news spread like wild fire. We went from 40 900 subs to about a
dozen, and a pile of radios I don’t want to deploy again. Shame on me for
not offering the extended packages at that time for those wanting more
 bandwidth.

I also have the area outside my home town that Century Link offers what
they claim is 12 meg service, but it never gets close. I am constantly
adding more sectors in these areas, Im getting to the point where I am
adding UBNT to offload Canopy, then adding more UBNT to offload the UBNT
that was offloading the Canopy, it gets to be a vicious circle. I am
already $20 per month more than CL, not sure if a lot of customers would
stay if I were to charge them more for what they are getting now. Once
again shame on me. The bosses think the prices should be the same across
the board, but technically performances cannot be matched across the board,
plus Im running ragged satisfying existing customers when I should be
looking at new areas, and start the vicious circle all over again LOL.

the cost, a power converter would be the least of their worries.

the Mikrotik router for that network and one MAC is registered to a lot of
ip addresses belonging to other equipment on the network (The device also
announces that it owns the gateway also). Locate the device for that mac
and log into that device, (keeping deleting the arp tables entries in order
to get there) and Disable the LAN interface. I ARP stealing stops.
Replacing the radio is the long term fix.
This has happened quite a few times after lightning storms and across all
the different devices made by Ubiquiti. Reloading or upgrading firmware has
no effect. Today we had one on one network and two on a different network.
With two of them it was even harder to fix. Had to MAC access deny the
radios to get service restored on the network.

Are we the only one with this issue? Has some one else had this issue and
 found a fix?

in my mind about certain channels and the adjacent protections. For instance
there is a jump in frequency between channels 13 and 14 of over 250 MHz. It
would seem silly to have to protect adjacent channels between those two.
There is a similar situation between channel 6 and 7.

Is anyone consulting the database search tool on the Spectrum Bridge
website? Is it of any value? Put in a zip code and it shows you all the
channels and what is and is not available, and has a legend which includes
the reason for any reserved ones. Any comment on how accurate and/or
 valuable this is?

Yes, but because they were adjacent, only one of the two was in use in any
given market. Therefore it was a safe bet that one of the two would be
white, and thus usable for the analog feed to a TV set. So devices with
analog TV output, ranging from VCRs to game consoles, usually have a switch
to choose between channels 3 and 4.

I have found that happening most often on radio's that are daisy chained,
especially older ones. Luckily as most of our radio's are on the roof's of
members there is someone there to power cycle them, or a call to some one on
the other side of it to power cycle it through the on site power
controller. It also depends on how much traffic is going through them.

I've been having quite a bit of problems with Tranzeo radios not coming
back online if I make a change to them remotely. Usualy this is with
AP's or backhaul links. I'd say about 30% of the time they will not
come back after making a change.

Is anyone else experiencing this? Does UBNT ever have that problem, or

If you are using Tranzeo TR5a, 49a or AP6000 series radios running in
PtP mode on an all bridged network, they will lock up. Newer firmware
helps, but does not completely resolve this problem. I ran in to this
very problem recently while troubleshooting a client's network.

It may not be the perfect solution, but one thing you could do that is
quick an simple is install some of the Digital Loggers auto-ping/reboot
devices at any site where you have a Tranzeo backhaul. Turn on the
autoping to test for the opposite side of the link and you won't have to
 make any more drives.

Had a similar problem when testing UBNT's. Seems they broadcast CDP's that
fill up Linksys router arp caches. Rebooting the routers made problem go

Also Brother printers can cause the same issue. Try blocking interclient

foot holes, six inches in diameter hold two 80 lb bags of concrete; that's
620 lbs holding it down. Of course three foot holes here in New Mexico are
a chore, so a tractor with a 4 auger into a hole prepped with a power
washer is a necessity, but you guys out there with that deep top soil
shouldn't have to much of a problem.

A design I'm working on is in a hilly wooded rural/resort area, not
farmland. It will need a fair number (perhaps a few dozen) sites to
cover the planned turf. Each node will need both backhaul (mesh, in
the loose sense) and access antennas. The obvious place to put these
is atop utility poles. I think the local electric cooperative will
cooperate and let us rent pole space. We may however need to put
additional poles in some places. They seem cheaper than metal towers
and are less likely to raise the locals' eyebrows.

Does anyone out there have experience with this sort of
arrangement? We're in the budgeting stage now. I have an idea what
the radios cost but the installation might be the bigger deal. The
big engineering firms are more used to fancy cellular and fiber
installs, not WISP-style radios. So we may also want to bring in
someone with this kind of WISP experience to do some consulting or
 setup with us too. Thanks.

Have an APP that does video quite well.

Multitasking might be nice.

The thing you run into is you have to keep the OS at the same level

Re: [WISPA] Outdoor mesh, has anyone seen any work well?

2010-03-05 Thread Phil Curnutt
Open-mesh. Don't know how well it will work, but it is cheap enough for a
test and then we'll all know. A few sites scattered up the canyon and see
it they connect. A couple of hundred bucks.

Phil

We charge 40/mo and do not charge different rates for being remote.

The fact is, nearly all our customrs you would consider remote if you're
 a
suburban or urban WISP.The investment isn't the issue here. Finding
what WORKS and making up two or three options to study is what I’m
 interested in.

 So far, I've proposed:

 1. Creating a co-op for the area, and they put in a fiber backbone through
part of the canyon, which we then distribute to the homes with short-range
wireless. I have no interest in fiber to the house, as it would be
 absurdly costly.
 2. Doing a series of short-hop 2.4 and longer-hop 900 repeaters,
strategically located on reachable places. There are, for instance,
some open shots from certain spots that'll get you a 1/2 mile in the open
for 5 gig. Other places are so dense that a 1/4 mile at 900 will be iffy.
 3. Some kind of mesh setup...

 1. Elegant but costly and the logistics and likelyhood of getting a rural
community together to fund it is... eeehhh... Iffy.
 2. Workable, but lots of points of failure to reach the farthest customers
 and still not cheap.
 3. Theory is that this is what mesh is made for, I just don't know of any
implementations (No, Jim, I will not use MT, I hated it when you sold it to
 me and still do).

Renting hillsides and putting in alternative powered repeaters... a
nightmare. This place often faces WEEKS of fogged in/snowed in / rained
 in
winter where you simply run out of solar power. Because of its terrain
 and
location, certain times of the winter will face prolonged inversions of fog
and low clouds.A repeater to GET there in the first place will be bad
enough, and it has clear horizons for sun and a ridge for wind.
Theoretically, we can put in mass solar panels and storage to overcome it,
but the cost, along with trying to site such volumes of equipment on a
hillside gets out of hand real fast.

So, this is why I’m asking about mesh.

Maybe - but it depends on the customer count. For 5 people you would
to charge ~100/mo each for access to get somewhere. For 30 you can do
  ~50/mo and be very happy.

words, longest distance with 2.4 is going to be not very far.

But, there's a lot of people here, equivalent of a small town, and
  no other
broadband, and only some of them could even use satellite, which
  they all
seem to hate. The populated area that's in this valley/canyon is
  spread
over about 6 miles, the first 3 of which is open enough to use more

Looking for recommendations on an Outdoor UPS, not concerned about a
long run time, just to handle the occasional blips. Form factor and

 install.
Will be fed by AC power, but it can distribute as a single AC or DC

[WISPA] vlan tagging/trunking

2009-11-12 Thread Phil Curnutt
Anybody out there using Vlan tagging to segment their network? Right now we
are running unrouted level 1 with fixed IP's and starting to see a lot of
bandwidth being eaten up with broadcast packets. Vlan tagging and trunking
seems to be an easy way to segment, but we can't seem to wrap our heads
around how to impliment. The easiest way seems to be tagging at the edge
and then assigning switch ports along the way to direct traffic to and from
the gateway router, but then someone says no you need to trunk from the
router to the switchs.

Any thoughts?

 But you're missing the point.
Yeah, Its definately not worth it, for those that can use the standard
 CAT5s
 effectively.
But your math assumes that they can, and not considering the other
 costs.
The ROI is NOT on the time saved comparing successful installs,
 comparing
 both types.
The ROI is on time saved comparing costs of failed connector installs.

What does it cost you if you crimp an end, and get a flaky crimp, and
 the
link not work? How long does it take to figure out which side of the
 cable
 had the bad crimp?
A 25 cent RJ-45 becomes 50 cents, if you ahve to cut one off and replace
 it.
I can give an example of recently where I had to send a guy back into
 the
city (half day's labor) to fix a packet loss problem caused by defective
 CAT5 plug terminations.
But most of the lost time was in the office troubleshooting the
 defective
packloss link trying to find what was wrong.

I can sympathise with eye sight degrating, in my older age :-( .
The error rate of successful CAT5 terminations go up, if eye sight is
 going
 down.

The question to ask is are the installers having to high a failure
 rate
for their first crimpts? If they are, then it may be a good investment.
As well, I look at my time as worth $100/hr, and I'd gladly spend the
 extra
$100 for connectors if it meant I was more likely to have sucessful
 crimpts
 the first time.
I compare... Risking paying 25 cent extra verus risk spending extra $100
 in
time figuring out where I made the Crimp mistake.

For the record, I do not use EZ-Rj45 plugs. But I understand the value
 of
Using the best RJ-45Plugs, and the ROI is there. I personally like to
 use
the the RJ45 Plugs sold by Shireen.
Ever since we started using them, terminations have been so much easier
 and
 successful.

I like the Shireen plugs because they have just the right wire hole
diameters for the wire to slide in easy, and I can be certain that
 they'll
slide into the right slots as I tried to align them to.
(Its becoming harder for me to tell the wire color once its inside the
 Jack,
due to eyes). And I can be certain they'll crimp securely.

I also got tired of the two peice CAT5 jacks, because I always kept
 loosing
the second peices, and ended up having to throw away 20% of them that
 would
 be incomplete set.

We have over 600 hundred Tranzeo's installed as AP's, CPE's and Backhaul.
So far our biggest problem has been lightening, but no problem with water
unless someone left off the black thingy and tried to seal it with RTV.
Of course we are in New Mexico where it only rains 12 inchs a year, but
usually all at once.

The newer radios have screws around the enclosure and a less adhesive
sealent, so they are much easier to open. Although a good filet knife
worked well with the old ones.

Re: [WISPA] harmful RFI from ethernet to HAM RADIO?

2009-03-30 Thread Phil Curnutt
Separate the runs from each other by at least 12 inchs and if they cross
make it at a 90 degree angle. That is standard NSC spec for isolating
secure lines from crosstalk, but works for any kind of spurious radiation.
Shielded cable will work as well but this will be a quick fix.

Yes that would be ethernet. Gets some cable ferrules and put on the
ethernet right next to the radio another right at the exit from the poe
and another right as cat5 cable goes into poe and finally one right where
the cat5 cable goes into switch and computer.

Might also consider using heavy outdoor rated shielded cat5 cabling
  between poe and unit.

Has anyone else here ever been co-located on a tower with a HAM radio
(144-148mhz) VHF repeater or perhaps even a commercial system in the
  150mhz
band and gotten complaints that your Ethernet cable is causing them
interference on their repeater? We are trying to locate the source of
  noise

read some links such as these. http://www.hamuniverse.com/linksys.html
  that
apparently some brands of equipment give out much more spurious emissions
  than others.

Also how did you work with the radio people to solve it? Seems to only be
  apparent in the VHF band.

Re: [WISPA] 2.4ghz wattmeter

2009-03-20 Thread Phil Curnutt
Used a Praxsym just last weekend. Had an AP lose half of its signal over
night. Put the Praxsym between the radio and the antenna. Forward power
23dB, not the radio. SWR 6, should have been 1.5. Put up a new antenna
and moved on down the road. Took more time to replace the omni than figure
out it was the problem.

One of my towers has a single WARP/StarOS connected to a 5GHz grid

backhaul and a 15dBi omni for the local connections.
On Saturday, after making some small changes, I rebooted it and it
  would
not
allow me to connect via wireless any longer - or my customers :(
So, I go to the tower, connect up via ethernet and everything is a
  usual
but
I see all associations but only a few client have ip addresses. I can
   ping
the few clients but the packet loss is huge 80-90%. I then reload my
backup
but still get the same thing. I try changing channels, but still the
   same.
I
then systematically begin replacing parts starting with the radio
 card.
Eventually, I replaced EVERYTHING but still have the problem. One
 note:
occasionally, twice of maybe three times, after a reboot, all came
 back
normal. The third time, I left well enough alone for now but of
 course,
you
know what will happen the next time I reboot.

Any ideas???

Ok, now we know what it is and does. Our network currently is primarily
Tranzeo AP's, CPE's and backhaul with Linksys routers behind the CPE's.
Recently a half of dozen Ubnt units have been installed and concurrent with
these installations we have been experiencing ARP table corruption in both
the Linksys routers and the backhaul Tranzeo's. Could this be caused by the
CDPv1 broadcasts from the Ubnt's?

IIRC mikrotik uses that for its winbox/mac telnet availability broadcasts.
Perhaps ubnt does something similar in AirOS? If you check cdp on a cisco
