On 7/30/2011 15:14, Gino Villarini wrote: Well yeah... being a cheap a... waned to check If I could do it with a single unit instead of 2(router+Switch) It really comes down to if you need to push a lot of PPS. If your typical load is under a few hundred meg/s and you just need performance with typical traffic, then a software based solution is fine. If you need line card redundancy, hitless failover of CPU's and hardware based forwarding of IPv4/6/MPLS+TE then the major vendors come into play. If you just need to lob some bits down the pipe for users and servers, I can't find a compelling reason to buy a hardware based router, other than ease of use. It's like comparing an Alvarion B100 to an ALU 6ghz 200mbit full duplex hop. Both fine solutions, but not to the same problem. -- *Bryan Fields* *APAC Imports LLC* Phone: 800-721-6502 Fax: 727-493-1511 http://apacimports.com WISPA Wants You! Re: [WISPA] Catalyst for BGP
Depends on which model. I'm using Catalyst 3750's in my iBGP setup. They work fine. I'm sure they can function in an eBGP capacity, but not with a full table. The TCAM cannot handle more than 11k IPv4 unicast routes in the desktop routing template. http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps5023/products_tech_note09186a00801e7bb9.shtml#topic3 On the other hand I have a Catalyst 6500 with the Supervisor 2 engine that can handle a full table from a few peers. A little more detail would be helpful. -- Blake Covarrubias On Jul 29, 2011, at 10:07 AM, Gino Villarini wrote: Anyone using Catalyst Switches for BGP? How well do they handle it? Gino A.
