Y'all can kick Trango if you want to - - and I agree that they are
considerably higher than a lot of other gear on the market, BUT - I run
their 900MHz and 5.xGHz gear and since deployment I havent had one call
from someone who needed their radio rebooted and I havent made any
"flying" 50 mile trips to a tower site do a hard power cycle on an AP
either. Every client who pays a monthly subscription fee over $124.99
gets a Trango radio!!! The lesser class client crowd gets something
that is spelled similar, but does need a power cycle from the client on
occasions :-) - - -- but then I can buy 3 of these and pay the
freight on them for the price of 1 Trango SU :-) sitting on the shelf at
Double Radius.

I know you really want to keep the existing gear. But it's really easy to
run new cat5 up to the mount and be done with it. Just pull all the old
crap down and go in with the new.

Or do like we are. We're all wifi gear (well, mostly) and we'll run the
outdoor radios indoors for those who have the cable and antennas already.
If there is ANY problem though, we just jerk out all of the old stuff and
drop in the new.

BTW, the Trango radios are under $375 from EC. I'm not sure how much the
version with the dish is but it's no the nearly $500 that was quoted
earlier.

That's why I use Star-os, so that I could extend

I have several customers beyond the limits of
normal "wifi", being 18, 16, 14,. etc miles from the AP.

I expect to have a few over time that go close to

do no use 'all in one' antenna and radio on my existing Turbocell

box. I wish to replace just the radio boxes, not the antennas/amps.

I'd drop the 2.4 gig stuff and go with a new 5 gig system.

Keep what you've got up on the tower and put the new gear up in
addition to what you have.
I wish I could, but to put up a new tower antenna, I will have to pull
one of the old ones. Contract issues.

Then move people off as devices fail.

It'll save you a LOT of time and trouble to go that way.

My 5 gig system is still Trango. I'll look at the new Airaya and SB
gear as we get some more time on them.

Hi all,

Well, with YDI/Terrorbeam closing the Karlnet office in Ohio, I think I
need to find a replacement for TurboCell systems..

My requirements for a replacement .

1) must use the same 2.4GHz antennas and amps I currently have
installed.

2) compatible with many different boards for CPE and AP

3) polling or token based. No hidden node issues.

4) tolerant of a wide spread in snr levels between clients.

4) low cost (yeah, right!)

I am not interested in 'all in one systems' where I have no ability to
mix n' match antenna's and such.

So far, I have heard a little about Netstream, (from MikroTik), and
about StarOS.

Netstream seems to offer polling and long range PtMP. However, having
to get new licenses every year is annoying.

StarOS offers up to 10 non over lapping channels in the 2.4GHz band.
This could be useful in cleaning up interference issues at some towers.

I lean toward Netstream because I have had good luck with my Mikrotik
routers that are currently in service, but I am more interested in

Re: [WISPA] Looking fora new system

2005-08-02 Thread Brian Rohrbacher
I like Tom's idea. Just replace one site, with other gear. Trango,
802.11 (if it's a site with no 15 mile shots) And take the old CPEs
down and re use them as you hook up people to the other Karlnet sites.
I think this is the least disruptive. You would be only messing with
one site.

And no, Trango will not work with you current gear, but you know that. :)

I lean toward Netstream because I have had good luck with my Mikrotik
routers that are currently in service, but I am more interested in
finding something that will last. I am also concerned about being left
high and dry as ydi/terabeam just did to me and many others.

Anyone out there using one or both of these systems? How about another

I wish I could, but to put up a new tower antenna, I will have to pull

Then move people off as devices fail.

It'll save you a LOT of time and trouble to go that way.

My 5 gig system is still Trango. I'll look at the new Airaya and SB

Only Nstream2 needs 2 cards at each end.

Nstream used 1 card at each end.

I

We are in the same boat and should probably be considering a change as

My advise, is to buy Trango, and start replacing one of your cells sites,
and then the pulled units you can then use at your turbo cell sites.

Hi all,

Well, with YDI/Terrorbeam closing the Karlnet office in Ohio, I think I
need to find a replacement for TurboCell systems..

My requirements for a replacement .

1) must use the same 2.4GHz antennas and amps I currently have installed.

I lean toward Netstream because I have had good luck with my Mikrotik
routers that are currently in service, but I am more interested in
finding something that will last. I am also concerned about being left
high and dry as ydi/terabeam just did to me and many others.

Anyone out there using one or both of these systems? How about another
system meeting these requirements that I don't know about?

Thoughts?

You could always just enable rts/cts to get rid of hidden node. Of course at
a significant speed penalty.

Re: [WISPA] Looking fora new system

2005-08-01 Thread John Scrivner
I use Star OS running on Routerboards with Orinoco cards. I do not see
any hidden node problems. If your customers are not using their
connections to be a host for peer to peer and other server based
applications then hidden node is not really a problem. If you enforce
your usage policies and such then you can easily use plain vanilla Wifi
just fine. I do this on about 17 tower locations and all is well. Star
OS is very much a key to this all working well. The built in management
tools for the AP end are quite nice. I am a recovering Karlnet user
though I never made the leap to Turbocell. I just always ran in Wifi
compatible mode. I still have many Karlnet RG-1000s in the field.
Bridging does not function on these in Wifi mode on a Star OS AP running
with Orinoco cards. You could easily route a small subnet to those
requiring a real IP address to their machine. The migration to Star OS
as our AP platform went very smoothly and caused only minor headaches.
This will be your least expensive and least painful solution I believe.

I am assuming he has mostly RG1100 and KN-50 clients like the rest of us. I
know the RG's and KN-50's could be flashed back to standard 802.11b client

software on the CPE like Karlnet.

We are in the same boat and should probably be considering a change as well.

My 5 gig system is still Trango. I'll look at the new Airaya and SB gear
as

we get some more time on them.

If you are going to go that route and spend that much money (you'll need new
cpe too it sounds like) I'd drop the 2.4 gig stuff and go with a new 5 gig
system. Keep what you've got up on the tower and put the new gear up in
addition to what you have. Then move people off as devices fail.

Hi all,

Well, with YDI/Terrorbeam closing the Karlnet office in Ohio, I think I
need to find a replacement for TurboCell systems..

My requirements for a replacement .

1) must use the same 2.4GHz antennas and amps I currently have installed.

I lean toward Netstream because I have had good luck with my Mikrotik
routers that are currently in service, but I am more interested in
finding something that will last. I am also concerned about being left
high and dry as ydi/terabeam just did to me and many others.

Anyone out there using one or both of these systems? How about another
system meeting these requirements that I don't know about?

Thoughts?
