RE: [WSG] Use of PDFs - Accessibility issues
Handheld users CAN view PDF. XDA's PDA's Blackberry Symbian etc etc... PDF can be made accessible just look at the features of Acrobats latest inception in CS3 Suite. Thanks, Mark -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of John Faulds Sent: 07 June 2007 23:00 To: wsg@webstandardsgroup.org Subject: Re: [WSG] Use of PDFs - Accessibility issues There was some discussion recently about how hard it is to create accessible PDFs (ie very hard) but I would've thought the obvious reason not to do it is that not everyone has a PDF reader installed so why potentially cut off some of your content from certain users? If it's in HTML at least everyone's going to be able to see it. Also, are handheld users able to view PDFs? I would've thought not. On Fri, 08 Jun 2007 01:04:01 +1000, Nick Roper [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: First of all, please let me know if this post is inappropriate for this list. If so then please point me elsewhere. We have a client for whom we created a website some 7 years ago. The site has developed over the years, and now comprises approximately 140 pages across a dozen or so categories. The customer is a hotel/leisure/golf resort in the UK and has two main types of site visitor: 1) Club members (approx 5000) 2) Non members that are looking for weekend breaks, golf venues, wedding venues, dining, conference facilities etc. The current site uses 99.9% html for content, with a server-based CMS that we developed and put in place at the outset, and which is used to update the site several times a day with news of results, events, etc, etc. Anyway, to get to the point, the customer has now been advised by a marketing agency that the site should be reduced in size to approx 45 key pages, and that the majority of content for things such as conference room specification and rates, bedroom specs and rates, menus, events, golf rates, membership rates etc, should be made available in PDF form instead of the html pages that are on the current site. I am aware that recent versions of Adobe allow more accessible PDF content to be created, but I would be grateful for thoughts on the use of PDF content instead of html content. Just to confirm, the recommendation from the agency is to replace existing html content with PDF version, not to provide PDFs as an additional alternative. I have researched articles on various sites, and the general advice seems to be that PDFs have their place when specific layout or functionality requires, but that these are generally considered to be fairly exceptional cases, such as legal forms that must be delivered in an original format, or multi-columnar information that cannot be degraded to an acceptable single column layout. I know that the customer will quite possibly consider any representation from us to avoid going down this path as an attempt to protect our interests in redevelopment proposals, so I would be very grateful for feedback and recommendations from others. Hi Kevin, I think you should first clean up that document. There are empty DIVs all over the place, you have a heading inside a SPAN element, a mispelled attribute (dl clas=event) and a few other things. The page is a mess in ie6 and as a side note, this browser won't do PNG transparency on that gradient unless you use a filter. Did you consider using that gradient as the background image of the DL instead? I don't think the effect would be much different if the stacking contect is reversed and that would also let pointing device users reach the entire scrollbar (unless, of course, this is part of the effect you're looking for). --- Regards, Thierry | www.TJKDesign.com *** List Guidelines: http://webstandardsgroup.org/mail/guidelines.cfm Unsubscribe: http://webstandardsgroup.org/join/unsubscribe.cfm Help: [EMAIL PROTECTED] *** *** List Guidelines: http://webstandardsgroup.org/mail/guidelines.cfm Unsubscribe: http://webstandardsgroup.org/join/unsubscribe.cfm Help: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ***

Scary! People need to wake up. I guess I am fortunate to not deal with many IE6 users in the work I do. This isn't to say I don't make my work compatible. I'd avoid PNG filters on IE6 personally as I find it dirty. To get back on-topic the site in question should ideally be re-written with more though-process before the coding. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Nick Gleitzman Sent: 03 June 2007 00:50 To: wsg@webstandardsgroup.org Subject: Re: [WSG] ie positioning help needed On 3 Jun 2007, at 8:44 AM, Mark Hedley wrote: ...for IE6 and to be fair... who uses it still?! Eventually, we discovered an overlapping flash module that was actually throwing a transparent layer above other elements. While the bad flash movie was fairly small, it had animated sections that grew and caused the problem. Expression Engine is good and reliable... but you got to pay approx 200$ for commercial license. Also, currently EE does not have a full-featured E-commerce module (just basic paypal.) The current approach for most EE users is to use something like Cubecart or Zencart. http://www.cubecart.com/site/home/ http://zen-cart.com/ Note: I hear there is a full-featured module being developed for EE... I hope it comes-out soon... Keep a look-out here: http://solspace.com/ Additionally, I find that EE makes me pull my hair out trying to make sure I have all my settings perfected... I think EE is great for folks that are not perfectionistic (maybe it is just me) -- I personally spend way too much time playing with EE settings -- For a couple pro-bono projects, I never finished (or switched to an alternative solution) partly due to all the loose ends that need to be tied in order to get EE fully optimized. Additionally, code redundancy is also a problem when it comes to templates (though, some would say this is a feature of EE)... Long story short, overall optimization can be attained, but it takes time, especially if you are new to the templating syntax and EE workflow. Do not get me wrong, EE is really nice though -- I would say there are many more good aspects than bad (great community support via forums.) Also, due to the price, EE is always growing and getting better. I love Textpattern, but it is lacking in the E-commerce department. Prob best to get a third party app (i.e. Cubecart/Zencart) for e-commerce stuff if using TXP. Drupal looks a bit too involved -- I enjoy coding, but it looks like if you got a quick deadline, and are new to Drupal, then you are SOL for quick-turnaround. I have heard good and bad things about Joomla (I personally never got past the installation.) Also, I rarely need a CMS that has everything under the sun (this is main reason why I love TXP.) I have heard Website Baker is good, though never used it... not sure about e-commerce, but maybe worth a gander: http://start.websitebaker.org/en/introduction.html You might want to look at these sites: http://www.cmsmatrix.org/ http://start.websitebaker.org/en/introduction.html Also, the WSG has a WSG-CMS listserv... Might want to ask questions there. Just my .0002cents... Good luck! I find it easy to teach clients how to use it. I've recently installed Drupal at the request of a client and find the learning curve very steep... I agree that it is vague and confusing. I haven't even had the chance to dive into the template coding yet...I'm still trying to figure out how to get around it from within. I've seen several sites with Zen Cart and love the presentation, but haven't had time to explore it from the inside...defintley on my list of things to explore. I find it vague and confusing (kind of like it's trying to be everything to everyone) and when I tried to create a new template I found all sorts of crappy table-based code needed, as well as the need to create bits of files all over the place to get one new template working. In my experience, something like Expression Engine (http://www.expressionengine.com) or wordpress (http://www.wordpress.org) would be a far better bet for a simple CMS and a heck of a lot easier for a non-technical editor to use. (BSD) Cross platform (Windows/Linux/Mac) and easy to install (PHP based Silverstripe is fantastic. It's relatively new in relation to other CMS's, but it sure has a lot of potential. Primarily, it's developed by a NZ company and was originally a closed source, proprietary CMS. It's extremely flexible for developers/designers to create custom templates/sites. The community is growing larger, and the SS staff are quite helpful. They provide a forum and IRC channel for support and discussion. More importantly, it's easy for clients/content writers to create pages, the interface is quite intuitive.
