[WSG] Odd FireFox div background image behavior
Pardon, my first question regarding css or problem. Test site: www.designbyatfb.com/designs/golfintro.html The background-image in the } #containerDiv{ position: relative; top: 0px; width: 800px; margin-top: auto; height: 100%; color: rgb(128, 128, 128); overflow: visible; background: transparent url(css-images/swing.gif) no-repeat ; background-position: bottom; } disappears when the page is resized in Fire Fox v 1.0.7 and Mozilla 1.7.12. It does not even appear at all in Opera 8.02 If page is opended at 800x600 it is fine. If it is opened at 1024x768 or higher, it is fine. If you resize after the initial view it disappears until your refresh. I have tried different Doc types, and encodings, nothing makes any difference. I have asked a few trusted expert friends, but no one has found an answer. I am sure it is simple simple. Forgive the unfinshed site, want this issue addressed before I move forward with the learning curve. As a some what new css user, I don't understand all the complex relationships of positioning, float and so on. I know they do effect each div used. Sorry I was trying to be so neat in my presentation of the browsers it does or does not work at all in and the browsers in which it does work part way in. So, the final css: #ytTopSearch button {border:none; background:none; padding:0; margin:0; vertical-align:middle; cursor:pointer; *cursor:hand; } Vertical-align:middle has the submit button and inline images centered vertically with the text. Is anyone a member of this group? Does anyone know anything about them? Is anyone a finalist? I had a look at some of the finalists and although they seem to require WCAG Priority 1 Accessibility, to reach that, don't your websites need to actually validate (at least some of their finalists don't)? Have I misunderstood? I rather think it's a good idea - but I think it misses a certain something (tableless design, validation, accessibility, etc). There are so many designers/developers on this list (and elsewhere) doing so many amazing things - why don't they ever get recognised for the good things they do? They deserve it more!! Would there be a way to give them the recognition they deserve? Re: [WSG] Introduction and first submission
I don't know, ignorance I could claim. Was unaware that this site or list even existed until doing a wee bit on investigating. I'm so glad I happened across you'all (Texas talk) however. Smile I belong to another forum with some great folks who have helped me tremendously in the past year to get past and move into the surreal realm of CSS and Validation etc. It took me quite a bit to absorb the concept! Now it appears that I have been labeled the compliance stickler on that forum. I am often asked why, my response in Because I can. My site (personal) serves as my testing grounds. My pet peeve is, stuff not validatinggo figure. I love the FF Web Developers tool bar and the tidy addon, whatever it is called! Great tool! That way I get to see which sites validate and which do not. (giggle, even standards sites show if not errors, warnings). PetPeeve: I wanted a guestbook, found one, installed it, then found out the darned old php code was fraught with invalidations. Not knowing a thing about php, I crossed my fingers, jumped in and fixed it! Took me days and days. I made several mistakes! My question is this, why oh why can't one who knows how to do those things, build them to validate before they release them for public consumption? How darn hard is it to specify the php to write out alt tags for images, or table summaries in tables and so on? Excuse me whilst I growl, grr. So in short, I am glad to be here, where I am not only folk, to whom it matters. Onward and upwards! Now if someone or the WC3 would find a valid alternative for the Onresize attribute! I would be a happy camper. BIG SMILE I don't know how to get smiles in an email, forgive me. http://www.designbyatfb.com/test/swftest2.html Don't wuite understand what you are asking, but lol, asked several questions recently myself about valid swf files and why one worked in IE and not in FF. Here is my test page with several examples. - Original Message - From: Martin Heiden [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Sean Jones wsg@webstandardsgroup.org Sent: Friday, February 24, 2006 2:34 PM Subject: Re[2]: [WSG] CSS and Flash Sean, Friday, February 24, 2006, 8:08:57 PM, you wrote: SJ scroll down to the section on embed multimedia, it has info on how to embed SJ flash using CSS. I really doubt that it is possible to embed flash by CSS. All these methods use the (X)HTML object tag. And this is mandatory to embed flash or other multimedia content into HTML pages. (Ok, you could also use the non standard embed tag for Netscape and Co., but there is really no need to do so.) Coming back to Mark's question, my answer is no, you can't use CSS for your needs. The best thing you can do is using the UFO method that Jesse already proposed, if you want to manage all your pages from one single maintenance point. (There are other options like CMS, add your favourite server side programming language her, or simple Dreamweaver templates to do so.) If you don't want to use JavaScript for that, you can use conditional comments for showing/hiding the right/wrong object attributes to the specific browsers: !--[if IE] object classid=clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-44455354 ![endif]--!--[if !IE]x-- object data=/flash/homepage.swf type=application/x-shockwave-flash !--![endif]-- param name=movie value=/flash/homepage.swf / param name=quality value=high / param name=wmode value=transparent / !-- Alternate Content goes here -- img src=/img/flash/homepage.jpg alt= / /object This will validate, but it uses IE proprietary conditional comments. IMHO it is a valid and safe method, but there are other opinions about that. I hope, I could help you. Martin. PS: If anyone want to try to convince me, that it is possible to embed flash by using CSS, I'm very interested in that solution. But I can't imagine that. ** The discussion list for http://webstandardsgroup.org/ See http://webstandardsgroup.org/mail/guidelines.cfm for some hints on posting to the list getting help ** -- No virus found in this incoming message. [WSG] Introduction and first submission
Pardon a silly question, but is it standard procedure to introduce one's self? I stumbled upon this site several days ago and have been inundated with wonderfully interesting and helpful information ever since. I did read that I need to only use plain text, so I must first figure out how that is done on a email by email basis using Outlook Express. I am Sharron a resident of the state of Texas, USA. I am a fairly newcomer to css, validation etcetera. Regards Sharron
Re: [WSG] Introduction and first submission
Thank you for your kind welcome. I am excited about learning more. I wish there were more minutes in a day so I could absorb all that I can. I am quite afraid that I am more limited by my brain cells, then time constraints though. Paul, I am not all that far from you, Waco area. I see from the site itself there is a member actually in Waco. I sure hope that I can capture the way these notices or emails work, it is a bit daunting for a newbie. I have setup new rules, in outlook hoping to download all messages from WSG into one folder, but have yet to manage to catch but a few! Now that I have posted from my site email address, I am getting these emails, in my inbox, my site folder, and the folder I had initially set up to receive them! I am looking forward to more participation here, but I fear that I don't have much to offer. I am sure I will be able to offer up a css challenge once in awhile. But then again, most here seem to have a firm grasp on everything! Try this link http://2006.sxsw.com/interactive/ SXSW started as a music only festival back in the 1980s. The Film and Interactive (that's us web and UI folks) came later in the 1990s. It's a 4-day get together were we attend panels to hear about thing people are doing. Sort of a trade show but not for any one vendor. Last year the keynote speakers were Jeffry Zeldman (in person) and Malcom Gladwell (Tipping point and Blink author). Also in attendance were Eric Meyer, Doug Bowman, Andy Budd, Jerremy Keith. The folks from down under from WestCiv who make an excellent CSS tool, Style Master. Sorry for the name dropping there. Anyway it's really a lot of fun.
