Re: [WSG] Introduction and first submission
I don't know, ignorance I could claim. Was unaware that this site or list even existed until doing a wee bit on investigating. I'm so glad I happened across you'all (Texas talk) however. Smile I belong to another forum with some great folks who have helped me tremendously in the past year to get past and move into the surreal realm of CSS and Validation etc. It took me quite a bit to absorb the concept! Now it appears that I have been labeled the compliance stickler on that forum. I am often asked why, my response in Because I can. My site (personal) serves as my testing grounds. My pet peeve is, stuff not validatinggo figure. I love the FF Web Developers tool bar and the tidy addon, whatever it is called! Great tool! That way I get to see which sites validate and which do not. (giggle, even standards sites show if not errors, warnings). PetPeeve: I wanted a guestbook, found one, installed it, then found out the darned old php code was fraught with invalidations. Not knowing a thing about php, I crossed my fingers, jumped in and fixed it! Took me days and days. I made several mistakes! My question is this, why oh why can't one who knows how to do those things, build them to validate before they release them for public consumption? How darn hard is it to specify the php to write out alt tags for images, or table summaries in tables and so on? Excuse me whilst I growl, grr. So in short, I am glad to be here, where I am not only folk, to whom it matters. Onward and upwards! Now if someone or the WC3 would find a valid alternative for the Onresize attribute! I would be a happy camper. BIG SMILE I don't know how to get smiles in an email, forgive me. Re: [WSG] Introduction and first submission
Thank you for your kind welcome. I am excited about learning more. I wish there were more minutes in a day so I could absorb all that I can. I am quite afraid that I am more limited by my brain cells, then time constraints though. Paul, I am not all that far from you, Waco area. I see from the site itself there is a member actually in Waco. I sure hope that I can capture the way these notices or emails work, it is a bit daunting for a newbie. I have setup new rules, in outlook hoping to download all messages from WSG into one folder, but have yet to manage to catch but a few! Now that I have posted from my site email address, I am getting these emails, in my inbox, my site folder, and the folder I had initially set up to receive them! I am looking forward to more participation here, but I fear that I don't have much to offer. I am sure I will be able to offer up a css challenge once in awhile. But then again, most here seem to have a firm grasp on everything! Re: [WSG] Introduction and first submission
Actually to reply to to Jan first. There is (or was) a WSG group here in Austin. At least as of SXSW 2005. They had a big party over at Frog Design. Great group of folks. I'm on a mailing or invite for the monthly meeting. Have been traveling and you know according to Murphy's law I will always be on the road during the monthly meeting. I'll dig up the site or email and pass it on to the folks here in Austin. As for the question what is this...SXSW? Wow I've never quite had to answer this to another Texan. Try this link http://2006.sxsw.com/interactive/ SXSW started as a music only festival back in the 1980s. The Film and Interactive (that's us web and UI folks) came later in the 1990s. It's a 4-day get together were we attend panels to hear about thing people are doing. Sort of a trade show but not for any one vendor. Last year the keynote speakers were Jeffry Zeldman (in person) and Malcom Gladwell (Tipping point and Blink author). Also in attendance were Eric Meyer, Doug Bowman, Andy Budd, Jerremy Keith. The folks from down under from WestCiv who make an excellent CSS tool, Style Master. Sorry for the name dropping there. Anyway it's really a lot of fun. In 1998, however, I went to work for the Seattle Chamber of Commerce, who was naturally a strong supporter of Microsoft -- the result was that I was forced to start using FrontPage and Internet Explorer. In 2002, I switched to Dreamweaver (which permits me to hand-code again, with a few bells whistles)...and a year ago I made Mozilla my default browser. Having just bought and devoured Jeffrey Zeldman's book, I am (again) a supporter and devout follower of Web standards and plan to redesign all my sites as time permits. Seems that, while I have a solid background in HTML, a natural tendency towards minimalist design, and some experience with CSS1, I have a lot to learn regarding CSS2. Forgive me, reader, for I have sinned against tables...bastardizing them for layout and whitespace. :/ I have repented and am slowly making my way towards the light, which is why I have joined this list, as I hope to get support in my efforts. -- ~john Dr. Zeus Web Development http://www.DrZeus.net ** The discussion list for http://webstandardsgroup.org/ Proud presenters of Web Essentials 04 http://we04.com/ Web standards, accessibility, inspiration, knowledge To be held in Sydney, September 30 and October 1, 2004 See http://webstandardsgroup.org/mail/guidelines.cfm for some hints on posting to the list getting help ** -- ___ Graffiti.net free e-mail @ www.graffiti.net Check out our value-added Premium features, such as a 1 GB mailbox for just US$9.95 per year! Re: [WSG] Introduction and call for help
Welcome, Chris. Regarding the flickering of that Design Resources image, I believe it's a symptom of not having specified a height for that element. Hence, if you change its CSS to: #resource {background-image: url(images/design.gif); background-repeat: no-repeat; background-position: center top; padding-top:25px; height: 25px;} This will remove the flickering. This flickeringdoesn't happen only with images; it can occur with text, too. I hope this helps. Well, let me start with a short introduction of myself. My name is Chris Gandolfo. I graduated in December from the University of Idaho with a bachelor degree in Visual Communication and a minor in Art. My emphasis is in Interface Design and for the past year and a half I have been immersing myself in Web Standards and CSS. I will be beginning my career in just a few short weeks as a Creative Services Design Intern for Twelve Horses North America located in Reno, NV (http://www.twelvehorses.com). Now on to my problem... I have been using my personal site as a learning tool and a place to test my skills. I have run into a problem with the latest design and can not get my head around it. First, the site can be viewed at http://www.c7designs.com and css at http;//www.c7designs.com/t1.css Everything works pretty well except I'm getting an IE image flicker that is atypical of anything I have ever seen before. The image I am speaking of is the "Design Resources" image in the right hand column. On page load the image is fine, but then it disappears when you mouse over any navigation item or scroll, but it does not happen to the other two background images in that column. I can not figure out why that one image is being targeted when all three are set up the same. None of them are being used for navigation. Any help would be appreciated!!
