Re: [wsjt-devel] Yaesu FT-847

2018-10-08 Thread Peter Sumner
Hello Alan (vk2ziw),
CAT is sort of important to WSPR users as this allows us to do automated
band hopping, it also helps to stop spotting of activity on the wrong band
(WSPR and other modes) as if WSJT-X has a CAT link then it will know when
you change the frequency on the rig and then change the band for spots
to WSPRnet / pskreporter and the ADIF export for your logging program.

How many times have you seen bad spots on WSPRnet (like over 10,000 Km on
144.489)? most of these erroreous spots are from non CAT linked users that
have forgoten to update WSJT-X when they do a manual band change.

CAT... because that's kinda the point with most digital modes these days.
And it's an FT-847, not 840.

Hi all,

Why do you need CAT control at all?

What's really needed is a rig with Stability.

Any rig with a digital VFO will do.

My 2c.

Yes, I have an FT-840 and it's OK.

Hi all,

Why do you need CAT control at all?

What's really needed is a rig with Stability.

Any rig with a digital VFO will do.

My 2c.

Yes, I have an FT-840 and it's OK.

[wsjt-devel] Rc2 ft8 72 bit vs 77 bit?

2018-10-08 Thread Bill Pence
Ok. I tried some tests.
I do decode both 77 bit and old messages
I had a buddy send an old cq and 77 bit cq.
I decided both.

But I did not select the always generate 77 bit messages so I expected to
answer with the format I decoded. That was not the case ???

Is this intended operation? I know for the rc release it is wasted code as
the GA version is 77 bit only.

In this case, if I do not select decode only 77 bit messages, how do I know
how to answer? Is there something i missed in the GUI window to show I got
a 77 bit vs old message?

It sort of seems like the 2 message format check boxes could be 1 box for
new format

I also have an early FT-847 with SN beginning with 8G. I was one of the
earliest adopters of that rig. I wish there was a way to upgrade the firmware.
I have not tried it with WSJT-X but will do so and report back to the group.
Best regards,

I am still using 1.9.1 Linux amd64 deb, but I could easily be persuaded to
upgrade. And I'm a willing guinea pig.

Yes. An early identification tag of some kind would help.

The fix wasn't just firmware. It required replacement of the entire AF board.
Yaesu discontinued their practice of making the fix for free years ago. Now
they just send a canned "we can't help you" email. I did reach one tech who
explained that it wasn't just the firmware fix we always thought it was.

FT-840UNI would be OK. “Early” or “NoGet” would require the user to know more

To be exact, the firmware modification enabling bi-directional CAT was
introduced in 8G05 (fifth production run (05), May (G) 1998 (8))

It would seem a firmware upgrade is technically possible, but you
have to send it in to get it done. Might be too late now.
