[wsjt-devel] Misleading QTH info on JTAlert

2024-02-13 Thread Ed Stokes via wsjt-devel
Laurie & Uwe,

As a ham who operates from several locations using the same call sign but
different grid squares (FN33 & DM04), it often happens that other ops will be
misdirected by JTAlert, leading them to believe they have contacted Vermont
(FN33) when they have responded to my call clearly indicating my grid as
(DM04).

As proof to me that they have worked Vermont they will send me a screen shot or
other image showing the JTAlert box misleading them to think so.

Is it possible to correct this?

Many thanks, Ed

[wsjt-devel] Show States for Grids in the Band Activity window

2024-01-04 Thread Ed Stokes via wsjt-devel
An earlier version (2.5 or 2.6?) had an option to show states within a grid in
the Band Activity window .

For example:
125245 Tx 648 ~ CQ W1KOK FN33 VT NY

Has this feature been eliminated?

If not, how do I find and activate it?

Re: [wsjt-devel] macOS Transmit Audio Problem

2020-11-03 Thread Ed Stokes
Hey David,

Have you tried taking audio directly from your Mac’s headphone jack?

I run a Mac mini using just the headphone and mic jacks which are built in.
I’ve also used a small USB/audio dongle successfully.

Try changing your prefs and see if you hear audio on the headphones when you
ask wsjt to transmit.

Another way to check audio on the mac's output which I use:

open a web browser
use the Mac as a tone generator:
https://www.szynalski.com/tone-generator/

you can verify audio output by listening with headphones
when you’ve verified audio output, feed it to the transceiver and
adjust your mic and power

Good luck.

Re: [wsjt-devel] Does the FT8 signal spike at the beginning of each transmission?

2019-06-27 Thread Ed Stokes
I’ll try the new release and see how that works. Thanks for the comment on
decoding.

>> How does Xojo open up a serial port that is already open?

An interesting question…

No. There is no splitter. One connection through one RS232 port from a mac
mini to an FTdx5000. WSJT-X and my Xojo auxiliary app both run simultaneously
on the mac.

As far as the Xojo part goes, it’s very straightforward.

There’s a serial object called theRadio. When called to open, it opens, even
if WSJT-X is running. A timer is set, commands are sent to theRadio, replies
are received and when the timer expires theRadio.close is called. Once in a
while there is a conflict but most of the time it works. If theRadio.open
generates an error, the app just waits an tries again.

So, for me the question is:

Given that the serial port can be “seized” temporarily by another user, when
does WSJT-X “care” and when does it not care?

1. The power spike problem can be “avoided” through keeping the xmtr power low
at the beginning of each cycle and then gradually increasing it. I have bit
of auxiliary code in Xojo which can do this, ramping power up during the first
5 seconds of the cycle.

Would anyone care to comment on how this variable power would affect the FT8
throughput?

2. I would like to know more about how WSJT-X uses the serial port.

By experimenting I found that Xojo can “grab” the serial port, interact briefly
with the radio, then drop the serial line and WSJT-X (with rare exceptions)
never notices.

For example, my auxiliary app can open the same serial port which WSJT-X is
using to control the radio, send some commands to the radio, stay connected for
100 ms. or so, then close that connection. WSJT-X seems none the wiser as long
as the interruption is brief.

When does WSJT-X access the serial port and when is it possible for another app
to use it without causing a conflict?

Hi Paul,

Thanks to you, too. Your comment on160m confirms my suspicions.

’m going to take a careful look at the ALC and see if I’ve got that right.

Does anyone know how to entirely disable ALC on a FT5K? Or, is this just a
dumb idea?

I am surprised and pleased that this question has generated so much response.

I’ve been puzzled by this all winter as I struggled with running 5 to 10 watts
on Top Band.

That said, it’s amazing what can be done, including numerous EU, AF, SA and
VK/ZL contacts, with so little power on 160m!

Hi Bill,

Another extremely helpful comment.

As you may have noted in my previous post, I am not co-located with the

Is it possible to access this menu via the serial interface?

Otherwise, I will have to wait until next month when I am at home again and
have physical access to the radio.

Thanks.

[wsjt-devel] Does the FT8 signal spike at the beginning of each transmission?

2019-04-12 Thread Ed Stokes
Hi Frank,

Many thanks for your input.

For you and for others who may read this thread, here is some additional
information.

I think there are several problems working together here. As you said, I think
the FTdx-5000 is doing something nasty. Even when I limit the power setting of
the rig I can see that it is peaking way above what I set for maximum power on
the initial spike.

I also agree with you that RFI must be part of the problem because the effect
is much more noticeable on the low bands and with the 160m dipole. I can run
full power on 17m with another dipole cut for that band which is even closer to
the equipment without any problem.

I am in my winter home in California at the moment and the station in question
is being run remotely in Vermont, so until I return home n a month no changes
to the setup are possible. I have about as much ferrite protection installed
as can be done (learned from years of experience, HI). I need to think about
the opto-isolators…thanks for that idea. The Mac Mini doesn’t seem capable of
being grounded although I have given some thought over the years to trying to
put it inside some kind of Faraday cage.

While it is extremely tedious, I can overcome the problem manually by watching
until transmission starts at a low power setting (e.g. -42 dB) on wsjt and then
advancing the power slider (to more like -15 dB). Generally this works but
sometimes the audio will still crash, even using this technique. But, alas, as
I said…extremely tedious!

It would be so nice if I could just grab the CAT line from wsjt. I could write
a little routine to wait a few seconds after the start of transmission and then
increase the power with my own CAT connection, then drop it back down and give
the CAT line back to wsjt. But I suspect that is impossible.

[wsjt-devel] Does the FT8 signal spike at the beginning of each transmission?

2019-04-12 Thread Ed Stokes
Hi Bill

Many thanks once again for your very generous reply to my query.

I am running an FTdx-5000 barefoot into a full size 160m dipole and using CAT
control. The speech processor is turned off. Audio is being fed via the front
panel mic jack from a Mac Mini. The A3J TX passband is set at 400-2600 Hz.
VOX is turned off.

After quite a bit of fiddling this morning with mic gain, bandwidth, power
settings and other controls I am unable to keep it from crashing the audio at
the start of each transmission, as described in my previous post.

If I turn the power setting on wsjtx very low then wait until the transmission
begins I can then increase the power without crashing the audio. I can advance
the power to the fully capability of the FT5k, i.e. 200w.

Is it possible to disable / enable the CAT connection to wsjtx via UTP?

If I could do that, I could use some software grab the CAT line then command
the rig to increase the power after wsjtx initiates the transmission cycle and
then return CAT control to wsjtx at the end of the transmission cycle.

If you have any further ideas, I would love to hear them.

Many thanks

[wsjt-devel] Does the FT8 signal spike at the beginning of each transmission?

2019-04-12 Thread Ed Stokes
I’m curious about something I observe about the FT8 signal modulation.

It appears to produce a pronounced spike in the audio at the beginning of each
15 second transmission.

When I operate on 160, 80 and 40 meters especially this spike will cause the
program to stop producing audio. My computer, a mac mini, is relatively close
to the 160m dipole being used on these bands, about 50 feet.

If I throttle back to -41 dB or so I can make the transmission begin without
stopping the audio, although the spike is still evident.

If I then gradually increase the “Pwr” slider I can increase the power without
causing the audio to crash.

If I leave the power increased the audio will crash immediately after the next
transmission period begins.

Is this a known problem?

Re: [wsjt-devel] WSJT-X 2.0.1 QSO ADIF transmission on the UDP port. Defect or Design?

2019-04-02 Thread Ed Stokes
Hi Bill,

Thanks to your help I am now sending and receiving UDP messages with WSJT-X!
After getting the clear message working I have now added the cq reply message
and am looking at the other available “in” messages. I only write software for
my own use, but doing so enhances my amateur radio hobby and gives me many
hours of pleasure.

About the Xojo license, yes, I agree it’s too expensive. After years of me
(and probably others) nagging and badgering them, they finally offer a less
expensive, limited use, license.

I renewed mine a few months ago on sale for about $79. (see below)

I have been using this software since early versions of RealBasic. For a long
time I would only upgrade every few years as the licenses don’t expire and my
use doesn’t require the latest version.

I first started serious programming with UCSD Pascal back in the 70’s and used
various (graduating to OOP along the way) Pascals for several decades. I used
to own/operate several radio broadcast stations and learned programming
(primarily) by writing accounting, program logging and automation software for
my stations. I have always enjoyed the challenge of writing my own programs,
but had to learn everything the hard way. If they offered computer science
programs when I was an undergrad I never heard about it!

Many, many thanks again for your patience and generosity in helping me find my
way with this project!

BTW, LOVE WSJT-X! Thanks to you and the rest of the team for your work!

Re: [wsjt-devel] WSJT-X 2.0.1 QSO ADIF transmission on the UDP port. Defect or Design?

2019-03-26 Thread Ed Stokes
// kGroupAddress = 127.0.0.1
// kOutPort = 61880

Dim d As new Datagram
Dim clearMessage As String

clearMessage = ChrB() + ChrB() + ChrB() + ChrB()
clearMessage = clearMessage + ChrB() + ChrB() + ChrB() + ChrB()
clearMessage = clearMessage + ChrB() + ChrB() + ChrB() + ChrB()
clearMessage = clearMessage + ChrB()  //  + ChrB()

d.Address = kGroupAddress
d.Port = kOutPort
d.Data = clearMessage

UdPSocket1.Write( d )

This did not produce any effect. So then, I thought perhaps I needed another
UDP socket as #1 was connected to port 2237.

Dim d As new Datagram
Dim clearMessage As String

clearMessage = ChrB() + ChrB() + ChrB() + ChrB()
clearMessage = clearMessage + ChrB() + ChrB() + ChrB() + ChrB()
clearMessage = clearMessage + ChrB() + ChrB() + ChrB() + ChrB()
clearMessage = clearMessage + ChrB()  //  + ChrB()

d.Address = kGroupAddress
d.Port = kOutPort
d.Data = clearMessage

UdPSocket2.Write( d )

But still no result.

What am i missing here?

Re: [wsjt-devel] WSJT-X 2.0.1 QSO ADIF transmission on the UDP port. Defect or Design?

2019-03-10 Thread Ed Stokes
Perhaps what I’m asking for is beyond what is reasonable, but I will ask anyway.

I write my own programs (using XOJO <https://www.xojo.com/>) to work in
conjunction with WSJT-X.

For a long time I have relied on reading the ALL.TXT file to determine the
incoming data. Every 15 seconds I read it and analyze it. This works but it
is slow and cumbersome.

I was hoping that I could catch the stream of information via UDP.

I have written a quickie test program which captures the UDP stream on port
2237.

But most of what I am seeing is just a bunch of “0”s.

Do these messages contain the information which shows up in the left hand
window of the program?

If not, is that information available as UDP messages?

Where can I get guidance on capturing and decoding any such UDP messages?

Tell me to buzz off if you like.

Many thanks & 73,
Ed

running 1.9.1 on a Mac Mini

generally double clicking on DX station works as expected: call sign changes
and transmit is enabled.

sometimes, the software just keeps transmitting to the previous station.

It doesn’t matter if you turn off enable or halt tx, the software just won’t
change calls.

only known remedy: shut down WSJT-X and restart.

Re: [wsjt-devel] Working same station on more than one band

2018-02-08 Thread Ed Stokes
FWIT, my home-brew software (Mac) reads the ALL.TXT file every time it updates.
It also keeps my log in a separate list and a matrix of grids worked on
various bands.

If the reported station shows a grid, that grid is checked against the matrix
for grids already worked on the current band.

If the station is in a grid not already worked on the current band and it is
calling CQ it goes into one target list and if it is not calling CQ it goes
into a separate target list. This allows me to identify all stations in grids
not worked on the current band, whether they are calling CQ or whether they are
working another station.

To prevent ALL.TXT from choking my software, I truncate it periodically.
Whenever the log file updates, the program updates the log list and the grid
matrix.

Generally, I write software only for my own use (in Xojo), but if anyone is
interested I would be happy to provide more information.

BTW, I am an active user of pskreporter <http://pskreporter.info/>, and it
seems to show that my signals have satisfactory reach. I am QRV on 160, 30, 20
and 17 meters most days and 6 when it shows any sign of life. My station is
located in Vermont but I operate remotely from my winter QTH here in California.

Thanks to the development team for a terrific application…. WSJT-X RULES!

Best wishes to all.

[wsjt-devel] Working same station on more than one band

2018-02-08 Thread Ed Stokes
Is it possible to have the software recognize that although you have already
worked a given station you have NOT worked on the current band?

I have home-brew software that tells me whether the station is new on the
current band, but I suspect that sometimes the DX station will not respond
because they see that I have already worked them (on another band).

[wsjt-devel] FT8 -- FTdx1200 & Data Jack

2018-01-18 Thread Ed Stokes
I wonder if anyone can give me some advice on using FT8 with an FTdx1200
connected through the data jack.

I’ve been trying to sort this out but am not getting anywhere.

If I plug a headset into the Mac’s audio out I hear the correct modulation
sound coming from FT8.

But when I route the audio out to the data in pin on the FTdx1200 all I hear on
the transmitted signal is noise!

This is true whether I select USB or USB data as the mode on the radio.

Re: [wsjt-devel] Correct procedure for uninstall

2018-01-10 Thread Ed Stokes
Reset the frequencies and the serial connection is OK.

But although the audio settings are as in rc1, there is NO audio response.

This is the same problem as originally described.

Switch back to rc1 and audio is OK.

Re: [wsjt-devel] Correct procedure for uninstall

2018-01-09 Thread Ed Stokes
Many thanks Bill.

Sorry for not understanding the correct posting procedures.

And thanks for the requested information.

I have posted in the past about my difficulties getting the final version to
run on my mac mini. In the meantime I have set up another mac with the final
version and it works correctly. So, my aim now is to make a clean install on
the first mac. If you like, I will let you know about the outcome.

[wsjt-devel] Correct Transmit Offset

2017-12-31 Thread Ed Stokes
On my FTdx 5000 I never took much notice of it but I think the VFO-B frequency
for transmit was 0.5 kHz above the receive frequency (i.e. 14.074.5).

I am now setting up another radio (an FTdx 1200) which does not have truly
separate VFOs and I notice it wants to shift the transmit frequency DOWN to
14.073.5.

Is this correct?

Your help would be appreciated.

Happy New Year from California.

[wsjt-devel] WSJT-X Version 1.8.0 and Mac OS X

2017-12-16 Thread Ed Stokes
Is anyone successfully running 1.8.0 (final) on a Mac under OS X 10.11?

On my Mac Mini .rc1 runs fine.

in my experience, later revisions do not hear output from the Mac unless .rc1
is run first and final is run as a duplicate from the terminal.

Can anyone verify that the final version actually works?

Still not able to run final version and get sound from my mac mini unless I run

I wonder if anyone else using a mac can duplicate this problem.

2017-11-29 Thread Ed Stokes
Interesting….

Started an instance of rc1, then an instance of 1.8.0 from the command line.
Audio came alive on 1.8.0. After resetting various prefs, it seems to be
working as expected. Killed first instance and 1.8.0 still running fine.

It will be interesting to see if I have to take this strange route to opening
1.8.0 successfully next time. Too interested in seeing what the latest version
offers to try restarting it now.

Stay tuned.

Thanks to one and all.

Re: [wsjt-devel] WSJT-X & Mac

2017-11-27 Thread Ed Stokes
Let me be clear. Although there are several versions of wsjtx installed on the
server, only a single instance is running at any given time.

The audio is not being shared among different instances running simultaneously.

When version rc1 is executed, the audio works.

Close it down, leave all the preferences and settings (both in wsjtx and the
mac OS) untouched.

Then start either of the later versions (and correcting the CAT) and there is
no audio reaching wsjtx.

But this does raise an interesting question.

Would starting version rc1, which does hear, and then starting a second
instance of one of the other versions result in the second one hearing too?

As I am unclear about running 2 instances simultaneously, perhaps someone could
point me to the documentation on running multiple instances.

When trying to run a second instance I get an alert asking if I want to “remove
stale lock file”. Answering yes brings up the same alert, as does retry.
Answering no shuts the second instance down.

I know I read somewhere about increasing memory for multiple instances, but I
can’t seem to find it again.

Any further ideas or help would be very welcome.

[wsjt-devel] WSJT-X & Mac

2017-11-26 Thread Ed Stokes

I have 3 versions of WSJT-X which I run on a Mac Mini under OS X 10.11.6 :

v1.8.0 9/2/17
v1.8.0-rc1 7/10/17
v1.8.0-rc2 10/28/17

v1.8.0-rc1 runs perfectly.

Close it down, and execute either of the other versions and they:

#1 show frequency / band info in red even though “test CAT” returns a green /
OK indication
#2 show no signals / activity on busy band

All preferences are the same, whichever version is executed.

Can anyone tell me what’s going on here and how to fix it?
