Hi Laurent,

Thanks for the suggestions. My OS update did not help me with running
the new Apps I wanted, so I solved the issue by reverting to El Capitan.

best wishes,

Phil.

Important request, participation in software development study

2020-02-05 Thread Ivan Dario Arroyo Chaves via X11-users
Dear Engineers,

When I write this message, I think I am writing to the best software developers
in the world, or to those who are in the process of being one. I write to ask
you a favor. I am a UMA PhD student and I study the use of formal and
non-formal models in the software industry.

According to 9 investigations, UML is not being used as it should, but the
developers use their own models, designed by them or by their companies.
However, these investigations have not included professionals like you, so I
want to ask you to help me by answering this survey:

If you have a Google account:

I also ask you to send this survey to other developers that you know and
respect.

Please help me, I promise that your contributions will be recognized in the
publications that are possible, therefore, as an optional field I have included
the name and email. My biggest goal is to unify all non-formal models to create
a modeling language that is the heritage of the industry, built by all of us.

1) System Preferences -> Security & Privacy -> Privacy -> "Full Disk

2) Unlock then add "Applications/Utilities/XQuartz.app"
3) Restart everything.

However, I still get the same error.

The other "Terminal" program still works, so this is not fatal.
But right now XQuartz is not usable for me. Suggestions ?

It look like you are either not *who* you think you are or not *where*
you think you are.

In both of a fresh Terminal and a fresh xterm, do:

$ pwd
$ id
$ echo $0
$ echo $SHELL
$ echo ~
$ echo $HOME

They should match between the Terminal and xterm environments.

Whichever terminal (lower 't') you use it's the shell that does the work
not the terminal.

Another thing to try.

Follow the steps you did earlier for adding XQuartz but instead add the XTerm
app. The difference here is that you are adding the app that actually owns the
child processes - which isn't XQuartz, but is XTerm.

Just my $0.02.

And if worse comes to worst, and you start your xterms using the command key
shortcut provided by XQuartz, you could edit that command to use command line
arguments to set the geometry and background color. You’d have to use ‘man
xterm’ to find the arguments’ syntax. Or it shouldn’t be hard to find examples

XQuartz window settings lost on OS update

2020-02-05 Thread Philip Dennison via X11-users

Hi all,

I've been using XQuartz for many years on several different Macs. In the
past my customized window settings have been retained during OS updates.
By this I mean my choice of initial size, text and background colors.

I have just updated my 2010 MacPro from El Camino to High Sierra, and my
settings have been lost. I get the default small black-on-white window.

It is so long since I set up those choices I can't remember how to do it...

They seem to have been saved in ~/.Xresources and are still present, but
no longer being used:

xterm.vt100.saveLines: 1000
! Colors
!.xterm.vt100.background: firebrick4
.xterm.vt100.background: rgb:6f/0/0
.xterm.vt100.foreground: lightyellow1
! Geometry
.xterm.vt100.geometry: 160x48+512+200

 I tried copying these settings to ~/.profile and /etc/profile and
~/.bashrc with no success.

Can anyone guide me on how to fix this?

Thanks very much,

Phil.

I don't know if this workaround works on Catalina because I am still running
Mohave, but
I have found that if I enable my account for remote login, start an xterm, and

   ssh my_user_id@localhost

from within the xterm I can access the locations (eg, ~/Library/Safari) that
are protected by System Integrity
Protection on Mohave without having to disable System Integrity Protection. I
don't know if it makes any
difference here, but I have also given the Terminal.app Full Disk Access in the
Security & Privacy preferences.

If you want to start other xclients from the remote login session you will need
to do something to set up
the DISPLAY environment variable properly in your new shell, but as far as I
know once you do that everything
works.

1- consider switching to Linux.

2- Disable System Integrity Protection.

$ csrutil status
System Integrity Protection status: disabled.

But this will probably not work anymore in future versions of macOS… therefore
consider switching to Linux. Or FreeBSD or OpenBSD if you really want.

Note: you will need to reboot in Recovery Mode to do that.

xterm operation not permitted

2020-02-05 Thread Ben Kilminster via X11-users
Hello,

I'm on a Mac  (Mac Catalina 10.15.2, XQuartz 2.7.11).

The problem is using the xterm provided by XQuartz, I no longer have permission
to look in my directories :
Wed 16:59 [bjk] ls ~/Documents/
ls: : Operation not permitted

I found a solution recommended online, which is :
1) System Preferences -> Security & Privacy -> Privacy -> "Full Disk Access"
2) Unlock then add "Applications/Utilities/XQuartz.app"
3) Restart everything.

However, I still get the same error.

The other "Terminal" program still works, so this is not fatal.
But right now XQuartz is not usable for me. Suggestions ?

Best,
Ben
