What am I missing?

When I look at incoming data and disconnect/reconnect to the internet server, I
see one of these:

N5JXS-F1
WE7U-F1
WE7U-F2

Those are the three Firenet servers. So that's the first check, make sure it's
one of those three. The last time we had a problem it was because other
aprs2.net servers were getting into the Firenet rotation for DNS.

Next is filter strings. Here's mine:

m/500 t/n e/WE7U-WX p/QUAKE o/ISS*/STEAM/UP844

It's the t/n e/WE7U-WX portion that's important for what you're after.

I'm seeing lots of areas lit up in yellow/red/blue in Florida right now, as
well as green rectangles and blue flood warning symbols. I don't currently see
tornado symbols but have seen them on the map in the last day or so. To see
these you need:

Station-Filter Data-Select Objects/Items ON
Station-Filter Data-Select Other Objects/Items ON

Of course no delivery of these to your screen is guaranteed: Several things
must be working perfectly in unison for the alerts to actually show up on your
Xastir screen. Any time you think there's a problem though I want to hear
about it. The last time things weren't working it was due to that Firenet DNS
issue, which required human intervention to fix.

My definition of non-serious and the other implementor's idea of
non-serious disagree a bit. I think you'll find that the alerts I generate are
important enough to gate too. There still aren't a LOT of alerts being generated, so if you're
only gating certain NWS stations through, you're fine. You won't be flooding RF.

It's possible that the alerts that _were_ being sent to APRS-IS are not making
it. I don't monitor over there, nor send weather alerts there, so don't know
for sure. Perhaps others can comment?

I have my Xastir at work zoomed out to USA zoom level and showing the weather
alerts. It's of course connected to Firenet, but the alerts are showing up
there. I'll keep monitoring it for a few more days that way to make sure they
stay working.

I don't think you'll miss any functionality if you connect to Firenet instead
of APRS-IS, but send concerns my way if you do and I'll bring them up to the
Firenet list if I can't answer directly.

One thing that I forgot to mention, the local NWS Office is MLB. I suppose

I'm seeing lots of alerts. NWS offices tend not to go dark much.

BTW: It appears that the firenet.aprs2.net rotate address has been fixed.
I'm connected to it now and getting the correct Firenet servers. Alerts are lighting up

I think I have to agree with you.

I didn't see a lot of alerts in my Xastir instance here (View-WX Alerts), so I
kicked the weather alert server a bit ago and started seeing more alerts in that

The most likely problem would be the newer NWS Shapefiles. I don't recall any

I'll do some more checking.

Just made sure my get-NWSdata script and Xastir code here were up-to-date, ran
testdbfawk against each of the NWS .dbf files, all looked good to me.

I'm waiting now to see if some good alerts come in and light up the map, under
the assumption that the weather server was hung up and restarting it may get
things flowing again.

If that doesn't work I'll do some more checking.

Found something: Connecting to firenet.aprs2.net right now causes problems,
which is a bit annoying 'cuz that's the round-robin address which spreads the load across
all three firenet servers. Every time I connected Xastir to that one I got:

# logresp WE7U-3 verified, server T2CAEAST

Which is interesting, 'cuz I don't know who T2CAEAST is... It's not one of
the three Firenet servers. I'll talk to the T2 guys and get that fixed. Somehow we got
a bad server in the rotation.

This one works:

firenet.us:14580

And this is the filter string I'm using:

m/500 t/n e/WE7U-WX p/QUAKE o/ISS*/STEAM/UP844

I'm starting to see areas light up finally!

The three individual addresses of Firenet servers are:

firenet-1.aprs2.net
firenet-2.aprs2.net
firenet-3.aprs2.net

Any of those should work as well. firenet.us and firenet-1.aprs.2.net are

Once the bogus server is out of the rotation, the preferred address will be
firenet.aprs2.net again because it spreads the load across all three servers.

OK, I guess that I learned something new.
So I have to use firenet, not the standard rotate pool?

I remember seeing some talk about Wx Alerts on firenet before, but I assumed
that was targeted to people who wanted to optionally use that feed AND get
alerts.

If I remember correctly, we are NOT supposed to inject additional data /
objects into firenet.
I am currently running Xastir as a bi-directional I-Gate and Wx Station.

So if I understand this correctly, I can either have an I-Gate with the rotate
feed, or I can get (and Gate to RF) Wx alerts from firenet, but not both.
Is this correct?

Curt, I think it was about a week and a half ago that I compiled from latest
and got and ran the latest NWS script, so it should pretty much be up to date.

I don't think that is the case, but I use Firenet all the time so for me it's
the default!

I'm one of the Firenet guys writing the scripts injecting Firenet objects,
running two of the Firenet servers, also wrote the weather alert scripts that are
injecting weather alerts into Firenet.

If you stick to the APRS-IS servers instead of Firenet you get fewer alerts:
The guy who wrote the software for injecting them there had different
priorities/thoughts about which alerts were important. It's a long story. So
I came along later and independently wrote the same thing, but produce more
types of alerts, which I inject into Firenet.

Firenet also has LOTS more objects than APRS-IS, but otherwise you can think of them as
the same thing, and they are interconnected. The special injection alerts
and objects on Firenet do not get ported across to APRS-IS, but all the usual user/igate
things are ported bidirectionally.

I remember seeing some talk about Wx Alerts on firenet before, but I assumed
that was targeted to people who wanted to optionally use that feed AND get

If I remember correctly, we are NOT supposed to inject additional data /

Not true. As I understand it you should treat it as you do the APRS-IS. It's
the APRS-IS + extra Firenet objects/alerts.

I am currently running Xastir as a bi-directional I-Gate and Wx Station.

So if I understand this correctly, I can either have an I-Gate with the rotate

Is this correct?

Nope. Run the igate on Firenet if you wish. Run it on APRS-IS servers if you
get enough weather alerts and other objects to satisfy you. I do inject some
objects into both, but usually limit what goes into APRS-IS: Earthquake
objects are a prime example.

Curt, I think it was about a week and a half ago that I compiled from latest
and got and ran the latest NWS script, so it should pretty much be up to date.

You should probably do a cvs update and then run through the compile/install
again. We changed things last Thursday the 16th and will be changing them again on or
about June 6th and July 1st. The NWS keeps changing files on us, so every time I make a
change I re-check their site and add upcoming file changes to my Google Calendar so I get
reminded when I need to change Xastir again. It's a pain!
