CVS Update: xc (branch: xf-4_8-branch)
CVSROOT:/home/x-cvs Module name:xc Changes by: da...@public.xfree86.org. 08/12/26 20:32:56 Log message: post-4.8.0 platform-related updates: 4. Enable HasLibPthread for FreeBSD 7 and later because libc_r is no longer present, and was deprecated since some earlier release (6.x?) (David Dawes). 3. Disable optimisation when building the scanpci/pcidata modules which contain a large amount of statically initialised data. Optimisation is disabled because it provokes an internal compiler error on FreeBSD 7.0 (David Dawes). 2. Update Xinstall.sh version for 4.8.0, and recognise some newer platforms and their bindists (David Dawes). 1. Elf has been the only supported format on FreeBSD for a long time. The objformat utility has been deprecated for a long time, and was finally removed in FreeBSD 7. Don't call it from imake for FreeBSD 5.x and later (David Dawes). Re: [XFree86] Binary vs source on alpha
On Sat, Jul 07, 2007 at 11:16:40AM -0400, Brian Evans wrote: Hello. I am having difficulties using a compiled source version of your 4.6.0 release as it locks up my Noritake Primo Alpha machine, AlphaServer 800 5/500 to be precise. The odd thing is that your pre-compiled binaries for alpha work just fine. Can you please explain the compilation setup and gcc flags you use for them? The pre-compiled binaries for alpha were built on sourceforge's now-defunct compile farm. They were built with the minimal host.def file in xc/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/etc/bindist/Linux-axp/. That had glibc 2.3.?, and I don't recall the gcc version. David ___ XFree86 mailing list XFree86@XFree86.Org http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86

I have Linux 2.6 with an Intel 82810 DC100 and a Compaq Presario MV500 Color Monitor. It was working fine while I had a Samsung SyncMaster 700IFT hooked up to it, and XFree86 4.3.9, but I moved the computer into a different place and this was the monitor I got. I had to reconfigure the monitor. I screwed up my keyboard configuration (every key I pressed changed the resolution) while messing around with the monitor, so I decided alright, time to upgrade. I downloaded XFree86 4.6.0 from the FTP, got all the necessary tgzs in hand, and installed. It finished, and at first glance it worked! I startxed and got xterm. I pushed a key and it put it on the display. Yay! Now, I have a new problem. I can't graphically login, or use XFree86 at all, anymore. I type my name and password, it flashes a black screen, and comes up the login screen, then I type my name and password, well, you get the picture. My /var/log/messages is full of these errors: Aug 9 01:09:51 Linux kdm: :0[5469]: Can't execute /etc/X11/xdm/Xstartup: No such file or directory Aug 9 01:09:51 Linux kdm: :0[4868]: Cannot execute startup script /etc/X11/xdm/Xstartup Aug 9 01:09:51 Linux kdm: :0[5486]: Can't execute /etc/X11/xdm/Xsetup: No such file or directory I unzipped the Xstartup, Xsetup, Xsession, and Xreset files, but then I just got xterm no matter what I tried. I gzip'ed them back up and attempted to copy my old files (from 4.3.9). It flashed a black screen and came up the login screen again when I tried that. So I removed those and now I'm back at square one. If you check the install log created by Xinstall.sh, you should be able to find the backup copies that it made of your original config files. The combination of subscriber only posting and spam/virus filtering is working very well for the other XFree86 lists, and without moderation. Either of these alone is not sufficient. What we are seeing here is that the filtering catches the vast majority of the spam (99%), with the subscriber-only restriction cutting off the remaining trickle. I see two problems with a keyword. First, a new poster won't know about it, so it won't help the number one reason for a new message being held. Second, a keyword will likely create a new trickle of spam. Remember that the filtering was already blocking thousands of spam messages per day, and the complaints here were about the very small fraction that were getting through. Perhaps nonsubscribers could send to the list if they included a keyword like XFree86 in the subject line. I'm also inclined to change back to a subscription list, making it clear in the reply to non-subscribers that they will need to subscribe and re-post. Maybe it will work better this time. You might try using the neomagic driver with: Option noaccel in the Section Device of the XF86Config file. If that works but is slow, you can add Option ShadowFB, which should be faster. Another option would be to omit the noaccel and ShadowFB options and instead try to turn off the acceleration feature that is broken. It's not clear which feature that is so it would take some experimentation, but for starters, I'd try: Option XaaNoPixmapCache Option XaaNoOffscreenPixmaps Thanks for your hints. Sadly, my problems seem rather deep. I switched (down) to VGA driver (guessing that the chip might support it) and set 800x600 24 bit, and still had the same problem. The only setting that gave non-bugged display was VGA, 1024x768, 256 (paletted) colours! The VGA driver only supports 640x480 with 16 colors, so you can't have been running the VGA driver, which brings up the question of what you actually are running. This is a little limiting :-) So I suspect my problem is rather deep rooted. I have run Mandrake 9.0, 9.1, 9.2 and 10.1 successfully on this machine; this is the first graphics problem I've had. Any hints (as always...) gratefully accepted. The broken display snapshot you showed looked like a rendering problem (like pixmaps were blitted to the wrong place). That can't still be happening with Option noaccel or it's an application issue, not a server issue. You need to send us your /var/log/XFree86.0.log file so we can see what you're really running. Agreed. We don't have enough information to see what is going on. For reference, I run XFree86 4.6.0 on an older laptop with a Neomagic 256AV (NM2200), and don't see any problems. SLAX, BeatrIX, and BitDefender Live, and KNOPPIX have given me the nasty 640x480 stuttered image. Which is progress as X appears to be doing the right thing. I don't trust the Hitachi panel to be working at 1360x768 as the Windows Nvidia drivers get the same result as the X i810, e.g. choose 1360x768 and panel says 1024x768. Does it visually look like 1360x768? What does the log file look like? Anyway, if the vesa does the right thing, that points to the i810 driver. Why doesn't the i810 + XFree86 code set up the mode correctly? Barry p.s.
