It appears to be the current behaviour, so I guess it is "normal" in
that sense, but I would classify it as a bug. And a nasty one, at that.

What is happening here (I am informed) is that X is waiting to see
some mouse input before noticing the keyboard. It's really annoying,
but recent X seems to suffer from this.

When I last checked (which was admittedly a long time ago)
allowmouseopenfail was necessary top allow X to start _at all_
if it couldn't open the configured mouse device.

Check dmesg for errors. Anything relevant?

Check the console for kernel errors too (although they should be in dmesg
anyway).

Go single user, unmount /var and fsck it.

Are you running any "unusual" kernel features like grsec that modify
expected behaviour a lot?

I've only ever had IO errors when running NFS or when the HD itself
was going bad. (Or once when a SCSI bus locked up, but that's unlikely
to be your problem).

The r128 driver, when connected to an LCD, ignores all the numbers in
the modeline except for the x and y resolutions - it even ignores the
clock speed: It looks up the rest of the numbers from the vbios, using
the x and y resolutions to find a matching mode. This doesn't prevent
you from using other resolutions, but some of the lower resolutions have
stupidly high refresh rates (aiui this doesn't matter because the chipset
compensates for this), so if you adjust the HorizSync and VertRefresh
values to have a _very_ wide range, you may be able to get at those modes.

I discussed this with the list a while back and a patch was put into
CVS, if said patch has propagated into your installation, then the
Xfree86 log should show why a mode is rejected (eg "not listed in bios"
and so on).

I have an A20p (Rage Mobility M3), if your horizsync and vertrefresh
entries are lenient enough, I would expect something like this modeline
to work for you:

ModeLine "1280x1024" 108.00 1280 1328 1342 1568 1024 1025 1028 1040

[ as I said, most of the numbers will be ignored, but these are the
values I actually pulled out of the VBIOS. ]

Your font server has not been started, so X cannot find the 'fixed'
(the default) font. Either start your font server
(probably with `/etc/init.d/xfs start` ) or add some lines to the
font paths in the 'Files' section of your XF86Config-4 file, eg:

Section "Files"
FontPath"unix/:7100"# local font server
# if the local font server has problems, we can fall back on these
FontPath"/usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc"
EndSection

( The actual locations may vary ).

Afaik all LCD use a pseudo refresh rate of 60Hz, you can use that
in your calculations.

I have a patch that makes the r128 driver dump all the modelines
in the VBIOS (modified for a 60Hz refresh) in the Xfree86 log file,
if you're interested.

The r128 driver, on laptops, in Xfree 4.[123].x, uses modeline
data from the BIOS, and ignores the user modeline. The BIOS on
some laptops has duff modelines for lower res modes than the
LCD native resolution. See bug 23 for a patch:

It works everywhere except xemacs: It works in emacs21, emacs20, verious
terminal emulators, but xemacs21-mule beeps and says "iso-level3-shift not
defined". I'm going to go out on a limb here and say it's an xemacs
problem: If I set it to just "Multi Key" then it sort of works,
except I have to hit AltGr-3 3 to get ³ instead of just AltGr-3.

The only differences I can see are that you don't assign Multi_key
to keycode 0x71 (in addition to ISO...) and I don't know what your
XkbModel and XkbLayout are set to in XF86Config-4. ( Mine are "pc105"

XF86Config configured similarly?

I don't know. I have used to have it defined as

keycode 0x71 = Mode_switch
addMod3= Mode_switch

(which was the old default) but after deactivating my xmodmap file,
the default is now:

keycode 0x71 = ISO_Level3_ShiftMulti_key
addMod5= ISO_Level3_Shift

I'm gussing there's an xmodmap file _somewhere_ on your system that's
still being run. I've attached an xmodmap file generated from the
default settings on my machine.

Do you run your own xmodmap command when logging in? Some of the keys
don't behave quite the way they used to: The VT switch sequences,
for example, now have an explicit X key symbol, which caught me out
for a while: Also, try running xkeycaps or similar and see what it thinks
your ALTGR key is set to.

With all 3 set, I get colour flashes, things keep flickering
into transparency and psychedelic trails, but no lockup, so
I'm guessing it's the chipset TCL support.

With just RADEON_NO_CODEGEN and RADEON_NO_VTXFMT set, I get a
lockup. It seems to be related to rendering wide open views with
a lot of depth.

I'll try this next, I guess. The other thing might be to look at
the changes since 4.1.0, or maybe install 4.2.0 and see if it blows
up.

Your font server is not running or available and you do not have a
font path configured which contains the "fixed" (default) font.
Either reconfigure X to get the fonts itself, or start your font
server before starting X.

No dice. Still locks up :(

You probably need to set your X resolution down to something the TV
can handle (< 800x600) and you may need to use atitvout.

[worked for me on a Thinkpad A20p/r128 M3]

If you're on a laptop, the radeon driver may share a bug w. the r128
driver (well, I say the driver, it's just as much the BIOS' fault)
which causes it to silently reject low res modes. Not a problem for
non-laptops, afaik.

Update: the freeze can occur on any level: But it doesn't seem to
occur on the first level I choose to play. I _can_ kill X with a
KILL signal, and shutdown -r will work cleanly: I just can't restart
X without a reboot first: If I do [ restart X ] the signal to the
monitor cuts out and it goes into standby mode, and the machine
becomes completely unresponsive.

It doesn't have to be an (EE) error. It might just be a (WW) warning.
Make sure you have agpgart support loaded, and the kernel radeon module
has also been loaded, and that /dev/dri and /dev/dri/card0 are there and
accessible.
