[Xpert]Xfree86 4.2.0 using 99% CPU on SiS?
G'day all, Has anyone seen a problem where XFree86 uses all available CPU when started from init. I'm just building a system from Red Hat 7.1 with 2.4.18 kernel, X4.2.0 on SiS730 chipset Duron processor... I used the binary dist. of X 4.2.0 I created a "service" to start xinit on boot to run a custom app. When it boots X takes up all the CPU. If I kill it and restart it works as expected <1% CPU. If anyone has any clues, I'd appreciate it. Hi again, No I haven't tried the leave X option in apmd.conf though I don't seem to have an apmd.conf on my machine. Is it linux specific? NetBSD's apmd documentation doesn't seem to make any reference to an apmd.conf. I realize I hadn't noted my o/s before perhaps this caused confusion. Hi, To answer your question(s): It's the notebook is a Dell Inspiron 8000 I have made virtually no configuration changes except setting the horiz. and vert. sync ranges. I'm also running it at 1600x1200 16bpp. Otherwise it's using a stock standard XF86Config generated by xf86config. I'm not sure what you mean by switching VT's but if you mean swapping to another desktop and back no it doesn't fix itself. Other things that don't work include restarting the window manager, allowing it to go to blank the screen again, refreshing the screen. Also, I neglected to note it in my previous post but I'm using NetBSD 1.5.2 this may be relevant. [Xpert]missing code in VESA DPMS
I'm trying to get DPMS screen blanking to work on a ViewSonic ViewPad 1000, but I'm concerned about the code which has appeared in 4.2.0. In 4.1.0, DPMSSet indirectly called VESADisplayPowerManagementSet, which called vgaHWDPMSSet, which called stdwriteCrtc via a pointer, which contained the lines outb(hwp->IOBase + hwp->PIOOffset + VGA_CRTC_INDEX_OFFSET, index); outb(hwp->IOBase + hwp->PIOOffset + VGA_CRTC_DATA_OFFSET, value); In 4.2.0, DPMSSet indirectly called VESADisplayPowerManagementSet, which employs the WriteCrtc macro which expands to outb(VGA_CRTC_INDEX_OFFSET, index);\ outb(VGA_CRTC_DATA_OFFSET, value) That seemed clearly bogus, and fortunatly for my peace of mind, in yesterday's 4.2.0 CVS fetch, DPMSSet indirectly called VESADisplayPowerManagementSet, which employs the WriteCrtc macro which now expands to outb(pVesa->ioBase + VGA_CRTC_INDEX_OFFSET, index);\ outb(pVesa->ioBase + VGA_CRTC_DATA_OFFSET, value) >From inspection, this seems better, but isn't there still the need for some additional offset? Or was the presence of "hwp->PIOOffset" a red herring? In any event, "xset dpms force off" doesn't work. I learned to put 'Option "dpms" "on"' in the "Screen" section, and with the insertion of "fprintf" statements, I have confirmed WriteCrtc gets called. Shortly after the screen blanks, xf86DPMSInit is called again, and the screen comes back on. Since I have no specifications for the hardware interface, I can only reason by analogy and comparison. If someone such as the author of these changes (is it Marc La France?) would drop me a note, I'm quite willing to help work on this part of the driver. It may be that DPMS works (mostly), but something further on is failing causing th reset. Anyone have suggestions? In that case you can turn it off by disabling DRI (i.e. not loading the module or commenting the appropriate line in XF86Config). BTW the only reason I imagine disabling busmastering is useful is if it causes freezes or corrupt video output. I left X running with xscreensaver for probably almost two days without a crash. Previous to that and after applying the option, I tried to use Linux, with ICEWM like I would normally, (surfing the web with Mozilla, reading news with pan, email etc.) and the system finally crashed after at least an hour. A little investigation, seemed to suggest that the crash happened in the glibc select call. (Mouse cursor would not move, display was frozen.). I had to log in remotely to shutdown. Another problem I have, but still investigating is when I launch X using 'startx', log out of X, and then run startx again, X doesn't start and I get a blank terminal. I updated glibc to 2.2.5-4 and things seem better but I haven't banged on Linux really hard or checked if 'startx' problem has gone away. However, I did do 'normal' stuff without a crash, and shutdown Linux normally to boot to Mac OS X. Anyway this is a vast improvement nonetheless. Thanks Mark! > > > In the section device? [Xpert]Re: Xkb Mappings and multiple keyboards.
Ok my mistake - linux maps both keyboards into one system keyboard - so it's not XFree's fault - James. ___ Xpert mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xpert

Well, if KDE didn't get started after upgrading to 4.2.0, *which* sort of graphical environment / desktop manager did you see while running startx? Tried to place something, like, "exec startkde" into your $HOME/.xinitrc file, or do you rely on some graphical login like [g|k]dm? > Beyond that, what light can anyone shed on getting KDE (or icewm) to run > with XFree 4.2.0? >From the "building-from-sources" - point of view: Did that with KDE, several times, and haven't seen any problems so far. Never tried icewm by now, but guess it should work as well. Cheers, Kris msg05414/pgp0.pgp Description: PGP signature
