What does the log file say? Check /var/log/XFree86.?.log. What does it
say about the -bpp option you passed?

Oh, -bpp is deprecated, use -depth instead. Also, passing a bad option
to X (ie. X -bogus) will print all server command line options. There
is an option to use a config file on the command line.

OK, here is the solution : after launching X, press the "Fn" and "F7"
keys at the same time. The Thinkpad display goes black, then comes back
with the good fonts.

The only problem is that the 640x480 256 colors doesn't use all the 11"4
DSTN screen, but only around 70%. Anyone knows how to force it to be
display-"full screen" ?

There's a small utility called numlockx which does what you want. I

turn it up.

Re: [Xpert]need help setting up xfree86 on sparcstation 20

2001-12-29 Thread dogshu

I'm damn close, but its not working yet.

XFree86 -configure works, and spits out a complete configuration file.
Unfortunately, however, X still doesn't start. It looks like it's about
to, but then it quits:

(II) SUNCG14: driver for CG14
(==) SUNCG14(0): RGB weight 10
(==) SUNCG14(0): Default visual is TrueColor
(==) SUNCG14(0): Using gamma correction (1.0, 1.0, 1.0)
(II) Loading /usr/local/XFree86-cvs/lib/modules/libfb.a
(II) Module fb: vendor="The XFree86 Project"
compiled for 4.1.99.3, module version = 1.0.0
(==) SUNCG14(0): DPI set to (75, 75)

Fatal server error:
AddScreen/ScreenInit failed for driver 0

I also have the same problem with the XFree86 server as with XFree86's
Xsun server. If I have not run Sun's Xsun server before running XFree86,
XFree86 just says no devices found.

Also, the driver only allows me to set the depth to 32, it says all other
depths are not supported by the driver, not even 8.

Unless someone has some new revelations about XFree86 on Solaris, I think
I'll just use xfree's Xsun in 8-bit depth, as it doesn't seem like
the loadable module version of XFree86 is supposed to work on
sparc/Solaris anyway. Besides, 256 colors will be enough for 95% of
what I will be doing on the box.

Thanks for your help Ferris. I couldn't find any substantial
documentation on interfacing with the framebuffers on solaris, except for
these man pages: cgfourteen, fbio, and good ol' mmap and iotcl.

Option "CrtScreen" seems to be what you want.

You could look at what has been done for the tdfx driver, but a single
chip driving both heads will probably require more work.

Re: [Xpert]need help setting up xfree86 on sparcstation 20

2001-12-29 Thread dogshu

Thanks for your help, I tried out your XF86Config file (it was already
very similar to my own), but it did not work. I am presently compiling
XFree86 4.1.0, hopefully it will work with that version.

couple questions:

What version of Solaris are you running?

Did you have to make any changes to the source tree to get it to compile
and work properly? For the build I am doing now, I just uncommented
#define HasGcc2 YES

and added

#define BuildXFree86OnSparcSunOS  YES
#define XSun24Server YES
#define XSunServer   YES
#define DoLoadableServer YES

in the site.def file. Is there anything else I need to change?

thanks,
Jim Faulkner

It worked back when I wrote it. Make sure you're not using
Matrox's HAL module. They might have broken it.

[Xpert]nv driver broken, compared to vesa driver (GeForce 3 + 1600SW)

2001-12-29 Thread Duraid Madina

Hi all,

Until various Brave Souls "port" the Linux NVIDIA binary driver to
FreeBSD, I'm stuck with XFree's vesa driver, which will only let me run
at 1280x1024x16 (whereas I'd like 1600x1024x24). At any rate, it's
horribly slow, blah blah, but other than that it appears to work
perfectly: I can see what I'm typing on the screen.

In the interest of improved speed (read: I want my CPU back), I'd like
to use the nv driver, but for some reason I can only get complete
garbage out of this. Attempting to set modelines (some of which work
100% with identical hardware running Linux and the NVIDIA binary driver)
is of no use whatsoever.

What's the story? Is there some secret GeForce timing selection, only
known to NVIDIA, which is invoked when "vesa" asks for a particular
mode, but is simply beyond the grasp of "nv", presumably due to a lack
of documentation?

Is there any way I can prod the nv driver to spit out the same DVI
signal as the vesa driver?

Thanks in advance,

Duraid

P.S. Someone remind me to stay well clear of NVIDIA.

It's supposed to work. It's just not finished, and whoever was working on
it apparently is doing other things right now.

As best as I can tell, XF86's Xsun/Xsun24 servers don't officially even
know about a cg14, and I suppose that's why they try to drive it as a
cg8.

Someplace there has to be documentation on how to interface with these
devices at the driver level: After all, Jelinek, Rehacek, and Miller got
the information from which they did the xfree86/sunxxx drivers somewhere.

If I had that and some clue how Solaris interfaces with these devices, I'd
try to ferret out what's going on, but I don't. If Sun makes any of this
information available, they call it something else.

Sorry I can't be of more help; I find it frustrating that XFree86 doesn't
provide a road map, at least, for completing xf86/sun support in general,
and Solaris specifically. (The in general part, because although the
drivers do work with Sparc/Linux, they are not yet functionally complete.)

Let me know if you come up with anything,

There is only one hardware palette. Matrox cards and some other
cards using TI or IBM ramdacs have a special mode where you can,
in 32bpp, have two framebuffers: one with 8 bits in the top byte of
each 32bit pixel and another in the 3 bottom bytes. The 8 bits can
go through a palette lookup, the bottom 3 just hold 8:8:8 RGB data
and cannot. This lets you offer a TrueColor visual (without
gamma correction) and you implement PseudoColor and GrayScale
with the 8bits that go through the palette. Actually you can
emulate all visuals through an 8 bit palette, but only
PseudoColor and GrayScale are offered because those are the
only read-write visuals. They have to be read-write because
you need to preallocate the colorkey which determines which
framebuffer the ramdac reads out, so there's really only 255
usable pixels + a transparent one. 256 colormap entries are
advertised, but one is preallocated.

No, the 24 bit portion doesn't have a palette.

I'm not aware of any PC graphics hardware that has more than one

Alex,
Thanks for the information, and if this makes my rants in my response to
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]> incorrect or irrelevant, my apologies.

As a piece of information, what operating system do you use? The
particular problem under discussion arose under Solaris 8, and xfree86
4.1.0 "shouldn't" run at all there. I don't usually use xf86 with
Solaris, but I use it with Sparc/Linux (I'm the one generating all the
noise about DPMS & sunffb :)

[Xpert]BUG: SEGV/hang in X server from movie playback

2001-12-29 Thread idalton

When playing avi-format files, the X server hangs/SEGVs rather
consistantly.

Software environment is Debian/GNU Linux 3.0 / 2.4.16, XFree86 Version
4.1.0.1, and alsa 0.9 beta10. Viewers are avifile 0.6.0.20011220 and
smpeg 0.4.4-4.

Hardware is a K6-2/350 with PCI 3D Rage Pro (boot head, display 0.1) and
PCI voodoo banshee (with DRI enabled, display 0.0).

Symptoms:

On 0.0, the first instance of either player will play the first input
file without problems. Upon playing a new input file in either player,
or switching players and playing an input file, the X server will exit
with a signal 11. On 0.1, any attempt to play a file with either player
results in an hard lock, including loss of network response.

Use of xawtv does not appear to cause any problems.

RE: [Xpert]No AGP and DRI with ATI Radeon Mobility M6

2001-12-29 Thread Prabhakar Reddy GVS

Hi there,

I thgt i should also add some observations from my end regarding the DRI and
AGP issue. I was atlast able to get my Radeon driver support for my Laptop.

Compaq Presario 1720 US, with RH 7.2, Kernel 2.4.7-10, XFree86 CVS Oct 31st
8 MB Video Ram, ATI Radeon Mobility M6

Observations:

1) When i pass "vga=0x305" to my kernel during bootup (in the lilo.conf). No
matter what I do, my X never runs if i use a Radeon driver. I had to use
Vesa generic driver to get my X running till now. I have also tried with
different options available for the "vga" parameter, but X runs only when i
choose "vga=1" option (i.e. 80x25). If i do choose to run with "vga=0x305"
kernel option and with "radeon" as my driver for the X, then i am only able
to get 640x480 screen and that too in a screwed up manner.

2) So i am able to run the X with a radeon support. Here is where i found
some bizzare things:

* If i set up my X server to a "1024x768x16", i get AGP 4x and also my DRI
is enabled.
This information was gathered from XFree.0.log, but when i try to
run the "glxinfo"
it says that my "Direct Rendering : no". Why is it saying so ???

  * When i set my X server to "1024x768x24", i get the display but then
my AGP and DRIoptions are ignored while the X starts.

In both cases, glxinfo reports that my "DRI" is disabled irrespective of
what is shown in XFree.0.log.

And glxgears gives me 250-270 fps. Can anyone tell me what should be the
ideal number on would expect to see if everything was working, for a Radeon
Mobility M6 chip ?

So here are my questions:

1) Can i still pass vga=0x305 (or any other option) and still get Radeon
support for my card ? If so what resolutions are we talking abt ?

2)Why isn't the DRI and AGP enabled at 1024x768x24 res. ? And why is glxinfo
reporting it incorrectly when i see that DRI is enabled in my XFree.0.log
(while using 1024x768x16 res) ?

3)What is the typical fps reported from "glxgears" for this videocard ?

Lastly, i was never able to get a higher resolution to work for me unlike
what Jean has reported.I will send in log files if someone is curious.

Seasons Greetings :))

regards

reddy

OK, I finally got AGP to work, using *only* CONFIG_AGP_INTEL. And I got
DRI working at 1280x1024. Unfortunately, I can't get it to work at
1400x1050 (SXGA+), which is my normal LCD resolution. It complains that
it can't allocate 8663 kB of memory, which is normal since I only have 8
MB video memory. Is there any way to "save some memory" so that I could
get DRI @ 1400x1050?

Thanks,

Jean-Marc

Because a problem on the client side prevents direct rendering. Usually
permissions or a version conflict. LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose might help.

There's too little VRAM for that.

I'd expect 500-1000 fps.

I owe you and some others an apology. I had thought that you were using

[Xpert]radeon 7000 (ve) "fix" question

2001-12-29 Thread Daniel A. Nobuto

Hi all,

Had problems getting a Radeon 7000
working, as the XFree86.#.log indicated all
was well, but the screen always blanked.

Traced it down to radeon_driver.c,
which was assuming DVI instead of CRT -- the
card only has one 15-pin VGA connector, but
otherwise, it's pretty much the same hardware
as the VE.

Forcing it to use CRT worked.

What's the "right" fix for this?

I'm still learning my way around the
source (just grabbed it to get my card working),
so if I'm a bit slow, apologies in advance. :-)

[Xpert]Running Config

2001-12-29 Thread David Hunt

Hi All

I am chasing a running config for a toshiba 300cds. This model runs the
C&T 6 chipset on a DSTN (passive) screen only capable of
800x600...has anyone got one? I am running 4.1.0, and thus far have not
been able to get X not to core dump with a signal 10.

Thanks

David Hunt

[Xpert]Re: radeon 7000 (ve) "fix" question

2001-12-29 Thread Daniel A. Nobuto

Hi all,

Forgot to mention,
Option "CrtScreen" "True"
didn't work, the messages said it was ignoring
it and still tried to use DVI, which is why I
was wondering about fixing the radeon driver.
