Would there be issues with ResourceManagerClientProtocol? ApplicationMasterProtocol - I find this a little confusing because it's not clear whether it's a protocol for communicating with application masters or for application masters to use. AMs also use the ContainerManager protocol. It also differs from the conventions used in the others. None of the names I'm about to propose seem perfect either, but ResourceRequesterProtocol, ApplicationResourceProtocol, ApplicationSchedulerProtocol, or SchedulerProtocol (consistent with yarn.resourcemanager.scheduler.address) sound a little better to me. I thought of that too first, but it isn't representative. ApplicationClientProtocol is more protocol for ApplicationClient. There still isn't consistency, but didn't seem like we'll have the perfect names. Some explanation: - ApplicationClientProtocol: Protocol for App clients - ContainerManagerProtocol: Protocol to talk to ContainerManager - ApplicationMasterProtocol: Protocol for ApplicationMasters - ResourceManagerAdminProtocol: Protocol to administer ResourceManager As you see, the verbs ARE different. But balancing verbosity, avoiding abbreviations, representing functionality is a little difficult excercise and the names we got now seem to be in the best balance for me. Maybe ResourceTrackingProtocol would fit better with that? Feel free to take that or leave it though. bq. I don't think there are perfect answers... Agreed that there are no perfect answers and that ultimately it boils down to subjective opinions about what's most clear. bq. Also, ApplicationMasterProtocol is the protocol we expect AMs to communicate with RM on; also, it is more than just the protocol for just getting resources from the Scheduler since it has registration, eventually we'll need to add cluster information etc. Those were my reservations about the names I proposed too. I'll withdraw my complaints because I can't think of anything better. Regarding ApplicationClientProtocol, though, it still seems to me that if something is named XClientProtocol, it pretty clearly means that it's the protocol for the client that talks to X. I haven't seen the term application client in the YARN literature, and don't think that saying it's the protocol for the application clients really clears things up. I won't fight it further though if that's what others choose to go with. Would it make sense to call it the AdminRMProtocol to reflect this in line with the ordering in the other protocols? I think it would also be helpful to add/go over the comments for the java protocol classes, as that is the first place many developers will go when trying to understand how YARN works and how to program against it.
