As a young girl I never cared to play with dolls. Stacy. At 08:01 PM 11/17/2002 -0600, you wrote: Well, I'll confess that I've been seen occasionally at the DnD table with my son and his friends. It is an escape, but with anything in this world, it can be addictive and distracting from the important things. I suppose that's why I don't play DnD more than 3-4 times a year usually. There are too many real things to do. Life needs some fun. And we need to be able to develop our imaginations. What books got you reading when you were a kid? How many of you in first grade, were captivated by Stephen Gould's explanations on evolution? Not many, eh? How many were role-playing Spiderman, the Fantastic Four, Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman? Where did you learn of them? Cartoons, comics, etc. Then again, email lists, chat groups, and internet are about as close to fantasy as some get, eh? RE: [ZION] Hogwarts and all
We saw it on Friday evening...pre-bought the tickets and was able to get them for all four of us at the matinee price for the 6:10pm show. LOVED the movie; that was the fastest three hour movie I've ever seen and then I've seen some 80 minute movies that seemed would never end! I really enjoyed the books, too. The Weasley home looked in the movie almost as I had imagined it, as did the basilisk. I think the movie has been well-cast, though I can't think of who they're going to get to replace Richard Harris as Dumbledore. Speculation, anyone? (now, there's a new thread...) I agree that it was better done than the first, though I personally am quite happy that Chris Columbus is out of the picture (so to speak) from now on. A director can't help but leave his fingerprints all over his opus, and "Stonehands" Columbus leaves mighty big prints. Michelle disagrees, but in this, I'm right. You should realize that not everyone is taken by the books. Our own Mark is less than fond of them, for example. But I think they're fun. The fact that a successful and entertaining film adaptation can be made by Chris Columbus should be evidence enough of solid concept and good screenplay translation of a fundamentally sound novel. :) > Question: my wife heard a rumor that the actor who played the > big gentle giant guy that Harry hooks onto (the one who wanted > a dragon in the first movie) has recently died in an accident. > Anyone know if this is true? (By the way -- and I don't think this qualifies as any sort of spoiler -- they should have made Hagrid about twice as big. Ah, well.) Stephen Beecroft: -Gary- > My wife and I saw it today. What a great film. Funny coincidence. We just took the kids to it today, too. ... they should have made Hagrid about twice as big. ___ Our family took up a row at the matinee today. Opening night was not in our budget, but the half-price afternoon show was well worth it. I saw the first film before I read the book. I then read all four books, enjoyed the second film today and am looking forward to the next book, hopefully by next summer. I think this film was better than the first, although I enjoyed the first one just the same. But they probably would have had a hard time finding someone to play Hagrid who was twice as big.
