[Zope] Aethera server and functionalities + ZOPE

2001-01-24 Thread Nicolas Pettiaux

Dear Mr Shawn,

THank you for your recent mail.

As I said i a recent message, in order to move my institution towards
open-source products and related services, I need the appropriate tools and
services.

For me, the KDE applications, aethera and kivio, you are developping, are
such tools we ( = the community + I) have long expected.

I need a groupware solution (that can use our LDAP directory) closely
linked to shared calendars, shared folders, connection to PIM (IPAQ and
Palm V), email lists ...

As the ICT manager, I have a rather strong influence on where we will spend
our money and how ( for me, this is rather buying services we can rely on
than products that are closed and that will soon appear not open enough, and
too limitative)

We are decided to use more and more ZOPE as a backend and server. have you
considered using ZOPE as the server , for example for the shared calendars,
for aethera ? How coul I help you considering ZOPE for such a use : this
would be really convenient for us as it would mean we could integrate aethera
and the web based calendar+groupware+workflow we are considering.

I suppose such requirements are similar to the ones many companies and
institutions like mine have. Maybe, all these institutions could team up and
support you along these lines.

For me a VERY important point you satisfy, and for which once again I want to
thank you, is that the application be free software.

Some more questions:

1/ which standards are you following for example for the calendaing features
or the taks and appointment requests ?
2/ will the application be compatible with Evolution ?

3/ You say
Python will be woven into all of our applications as a scripting
component. It isn't there yet, but it will be.

For kivio and aethera, what are your plans (release dates ) ?

4/ How can I help you get further ?

- Try and collect money,
- find people/teams/developpers especially KDE who could help you and your
company - or shoudl I say kompany at developping or selling local support ?

I am better at that - convincing people and finding money - than at writing
applications so I'll stick to what I am best of.

Best regards,

Nicolas Pettiaux

s the easiest and that tests are better
done on Debian that on other systems (No wonder VA Linux has choosen Debain !)
We could use other if absolutely needed.

Q21/ What would you charge for such a system, how do you charge - by named
user, by site, ... ?

Q22/ Would you or any English speaker be able to come to Brussels soon ?

Q23/ Would you be ready to cooperate with a local system integrator could
would provide local help and support ?

I am asking that many questions because
1/ I find your system wonderful
2/ I am in a hurry (the selection meeting was planned for Wednesday but is a
little postponed )
3/ I need to have a demonstration system as well as a qualification session
soon.

Hoping to read you soon.

Best regards,

Nicolas Pettiaux

[Zope] Re: Workflow and document management system in Zope

2001-01-20 Thread Nicolas Pettiaux

Dear Mr Boulanger,

Thank you very much for your input.

I don't think there is such as system polished and ready within 2
 weeks.

I do NOT need a polished system within 2 weeks. I need a proof of concept .

The production system shoudl run in 2 or 3 months ... and could be optimized
afterwards also, in order to be polished. If it is well though already this
should be possible.

What could you do or take in charge ?

Best regards,

Nicolas Pettiaux

I am looking for a workflow (WF) linked to a electronic document management
(EDM) system and a groupware email based (I have just happened to come
accross aethera from the Kompany) that would be free software and
preferably in Zope + Python. The WF+DEM system I am looking for need to be
usable with only a browser (to be independant from the client ... that
could be proprietary !), store its data into a postgresql database. It
should be demonstrablable (at least showable into a proof of concept)
within 2 weeks and be already installable and usable within 2 or 3 months.
(I have obtained taoday that the date when we'll decide on the system would
be postponed 2 weeks from wednesday 24/1 to wed 7/2)
If I could find such a marvel, I may find the money to pay for it, at
least 5 $ to start with (this amount is a rapid guess; I may give more
precise amounts we could spend in the following week)

The idea is to use that combination of tools INSTEAD of buying a closed,
proprietary solution (that may exist but be expensive and really har to
parametrize), that NEED to be linked to a SAP ERP system.

All suggestions and ideas are welcome, also on the selection criteria.

(I happen to be responsible for the IT dept of the public institution
that wants to buy such a tool, but be new in the place and do not yet know
a lot about WF and EDM !)

Soon I may be able to give you more details about the requirements.

I don't think there is such as system polished and ready within 2
weeks. Here are some starting points:

use wftk as a basis, the open source workflow toolkit --
 http://.vivtek.com/wftk

use openflow, a Zope based, but stalled project,
 http://openflow.sourceforge.net

use Chautauqua, an old python based workflow system,
 http://www.cs.colorado.edu/~carlosm/chautauqua.html

use the old UCI Endeavors workflow (java) system
  at http://www.ics.uci.edu/pub/endeavors/endeavors.html

We have not bit the bullet and built anything yet.

 Regards,
 Albert Boulanger

[Zope] Re: Workflow and document management system in Zope

2001-01-18 Thread Nicolas Pettiaux

Thank you very much for your rapid answer.

I will look deeper to that as soon as tomorrow as I will have to decide for
such products from corporate proposals versus free software products
next week.

For you, when would such products be considered ready for production ?

If I can have a demonstration rapidly (unfortunately I do not yet know Zope
personnally but I shall look for help locally), I may even get funds to help
and foster the complementary developpement.

Best regards,

Nicolas

Some of this is now in the Portal Toolkit (PTK) soon to be re-named and
re-launched at the release of the long awaited version 1. This is the bag
of tricks that the Digital Creations gang uses to whip out massive,
stat-of-the-art Web extravaganzas at light speed. You can download the

Lots of other folks are very interested in these topics, I'm sure you'll
get some positive feedback to your questions.
