[Zope-dev] buidout 1.5

2010-09-17 Thread Christophe Combelles
There are some discussions in the grok and bluebream lists about the
opportunity
to upgrade to buildout 1.5, as it will provide *isolation without virtualenv*,
so it should facilitate installations and deployments.

Is it too late for the ZTK 1.0?
Is it worth at least trying to see what it does?

I don't want to see zc.buildout 1.5 in the ZTK 1.0. There's tons of
recipes out there based on zc.recipe.egg which all have a good chance
of needing adjustments.

Right now I just want to get a stable ZTK 1.0 out and not add any new
features to it. We have the trunk open for development.

[Zope-dev] Python 2.4 Support

2010-09-17 Thread Andre Schubert
Hi,

i have a little question.
Is there a chance to not drop Python2.4 Support for ZTK1.1?
I ask because Redhat Enterprise Linux 5 is shipped with Python2.4,
and should have been supported for some years from now.

Andre

+1 zc.buildout 1.5 caused great pain here at work! I have worked with Gary to
rectify the problems, but I would still prefer no feature release changes in
the ZTK now.

At this point, the burden of keeping 2.4 compatibility is too high for
ongoing development.

If your underlying stability requirements are such that you cannot
upgrade, or even install and use a newer non-RPM python, then you should
stick with the stable ZTK 1.0 release. Note that nothing prevents us
from making a 1.0.x release containing package versions with critical
fixes backported (although I don't think anybody is signed up to do that
work at present).

I agree. We have to support Python 2.5, 2.6 and 2.7 already. There is also a
desire to use newer releases, since they get us closer to Python 3.

[Zope-dev] Heads up: ZODB probably won't work with Python 2.7

2010-09-17 Thread Jim Fulton
I suspect that the shenanigans played by the ZODB persistent cache
implementation is running afoul of some changes in the garbage
collection implementation in Python 2.7.

See https://bugs.launchpad.net/zodb/+bug/641481

The person reporting this was running a Python compiled in debug mode.
This will sometimes detect subtle memory management bugs not detected
with a normal build. ZODB's tests pass with a normal Python 2.7 build
and with a debug Python 2.6 build.

I've tracked one source of crash in a debug build to the cache's
attempts to manage weak references to ghosts. Even hacking around
this, there are other crashes that, I assume, are related. :(

I'll dig further, but I strongly suspect that moving to Python 2.7
will require a cache reimplementation that uses real Python weak
references. This won't happen in ZODB 3.10.

If there is anyone on this list who has knowledge of Python GC
internals, I'd love to get some help. :)
