mike,
i would have had to first read the youtube page and known who john
carpenter was.

both of which i did not.

now i did play with gi joe's as a kid and has seen the thing several
times

now i am not sure of this, but, i think thee is a full version of the
thing done by these guys out there and it looks like the video
producer nipped that. the memory is foggy but i think someone posted
the full video to the detroitluv.com a few years back.

but either way the video is very cool as is the song.

Re: (313) Festival IX

2008-05-29 Thread Scotto

I had fun last weekend.
i only went one day sunday to the festival.
it was nice to see people who i have not seen in a few years and i
meet you at too far gone... no way back i was the guy with the celis
white in plastic bottles.
my complaint is the price, yea it is $25 a day, but this is a
historically free festival. my biggest complaint is that stupid $3.25
service charge on credit card ticket sale at the box office.

i really hope they bring back ritchie hawlking again next year

i completely agree with you here, well done.

On the other hand, the lineup is less and less adventurous.
I suppose Paxahau could reply that the box office numbers are the
real gauge regardless of what we all think.

i have noticed that there are less and less of the groups/producers i
have never heard of before and i see them and i buy all the records i
can find. bring back carl craig damn it!

I saw very few standout performances this year (although left early
and didn't see Carl Craig and many told me his set was excellent).
To be fair, for the first time ever I missed a full day (Monday),
not by design but other things came up.

i caught some of it on my way out, i think it was throw with a live
sax player. the main stage was packed and i was sick of dealing with
crowds and had to drive back to lansing that night so i jumped out
early.

As for the afterparties, Derek P killed it at the Works on Friday
night and Mike Servito likewise at No Way Back on Saturday,
and I loved the Aquanauts (Bileebob, Skurge and Nomadico)
at the UR show at Alvins -- technopunk with an attitude and a
grin.

no way back was a lot of fun, that will be my detroit party fix for a
few months, i split around 5.

So I finally get to add to this b/c I'm a new, first time dad, as

a month ago. As you either know, or can imagine, there's tons of
writing and
products out there that play on the idea of Classical music being
good and
calming for baby. I personally think it's a load of hooey and a
marketing
technique they use b/c in the real world, people associate
classical music

with intelligence and culture.

Someone gave us a baby Einstein CD (a series of toys, music, and
video for
infants), and it was crap - 40 minutes of classic lullabies played
on a

general MIDI preset box.

My theory goes like this: when baby is in utero, he/she is swimming in
fluid. All of the outside sounds get translated to swirling bass,
and it's
LOUD in there; think about what it sounds like when you're under
water. I

was looking for the best music to mimic that environment

To that end, the thing that just astounds me is that my son loves
and is
calmed by dubby techno (lucky for me!). When he starts to cry, I
play rhythm
sound, maurizio, or deepchord over and over. More up tempo Gez
Varley,

Ifach label, or Rob Hood tracks work too.

The trick is turning it up, not to any ludicrous level, but loud
enough to

feel the bass kick. Cutting back on the highs helps too.

Hopefully, his taste in music will continue along this path :)

I had a great time this year, actually, and feel like I was at a
different festival than Tom Cox, even though I was hanging out with
him half the time. I hope that Paxahau will take into account the
criticism they got on the line-up, because it really should be more
about Detroit music.

At the same time, the music I saw was all great. Fred Giannelli, La
Petit Orb, Szymanski, Jeremy Ellis, John Arnold, Tortured Soul, Dan
Bell, Carl Craig, Starsky and Clutch, Deadbeat, Godfather, were all
great musical experiences for me. Stacey Pullen, Mike Huckaby, and
Harvey at Oslo were awesome as well.

I wonder if there's some sort of dance music diet club going on.
Huckaby is looking trimmer, and Boo Williams has dropped probably a
hundred pounds! Boo was showing off his wife, and seemed as
happy as

I've ever seen him.

Main criticism I had was NO FREE WATER. That was downright
dangerous

i can not count the parties i have been to where it was way hot and
the promoters were handing out free water.

i know paxahau was not running the water, it was an indie vender, but
they should have had better communication with the city on the
drinking fountains and bathrooms and the water there.
bonaroo (for example) has plenty of free water and misters to keep
you cool.

usually it is not that hot for the demf, but you need to be prepared.

this with the fact most bottles were not given out with caps so it
gets spilled and you drink it way to fast. i dont know there exact
reasons for no battle caps, i have herd the projectile excuse but it
you bought the smart water it came with a cap, so that kinda blows
that out of the water for me.

i was also very upset about the bait and switch on the entrance fee,
i really think $20 is to much for a festival that has been
historically FREE, ecpacally for the second year of charging, which
makes me perdict and entrance fee of $30-35 next year.

and really how many people who are interested but not a big fan will
dole out that kind of cash to come? imo not many, which for a music
scene like ours makes the death even quicker.

i was very happy with the fact every stage was on time with in five
minutes and the lack of sound in the vender tent was really what the
fest needed. the side sound tents have been a complaint of mine since
the 2nd fest, with a couple of exception like the industrial stage
and the d-luv stage

i guess my main complaint is the price and the fact the it will
constantly increase now to the point where i can not go all weekend
because i'm freakin poor. and really do we need rich to close the
fest two years in a row, those who know me know i'm a hudge richie
fan. the later not being as big a deal as the first.

hey alex since were on the subject of ultradyne releases, what is the deal
with the surface effect release?
it says ultradyne and redshift, is a colbration or is one side you guys and
the other side redshift?
and my next question is if the later is correct which side is ultradyne and
what are the track names if they are named?

its a good release i think side a (side with two tracks on it) sounds more
like you guys, side b has been making it in to my mix again, fits nicely
with the heavier electro.

We released 1000 copies of this. We did send promos out as well. At that
time we were mostly dealing only with Hardwax and Formic for the most
 part.

Pardon me Mr. taylor, but I dont see how somebody who spams the list
daily with one or two quick sentences of over-simplified arrogant
generalizations has the guts to call the discogs website sh!t. Im
just one of the many free users and am not affiliated with the site by
any other means, but I still have to stand up for them if you feel it
 necissary to besmirch their name.

Discogs has been very helpful to me in the past. I can only recollect
a fraction of the many times I have found discogs to be totally
helpful. Knowledge is power, and there is a lot you can learn if your
are willing to spend some time researching discogs. its also totally
free, you dont even have to be a member to search its information
 libraries.

And is it so unthinkable and unforgivable that there would be spotty
information about Basic Channel? I consider myself a fairly well
informed member of the under ground community, and even i think all the
basic channel records look alike. Artists like von oswald arent about
advertising themselves nearly as much as you do for yourself.

i don't have any figures but i think there's plenty of errors, and
the mods constantly tell to look for more information from the net even
when pointed out that google or altavista can't find anything when
searched with record name or label and telling me wrong facts about
records i own. not forgetting that there's just some mods whote no for
release when it is representing a genre they don't like.

the problem lies of course in that fact that there simply isn't any one
person who would know everything about every record ever released, or
even reasonably sized group of people who would be able to do that; and
 we must remember that the net is full of wrong information otherwise;
if person x submits a record he has in his hands, with correct information
and some mod finds a netsite that has some false information regarding
that record, and the mod doesn't know anything else about that record,
he is likely to vote no for it, without knowing his information is
false. then again, the submitters constantly submit wrong information,
for example records that they don't own but they just copy/paste
the info from a website. (this is generally not accepted but it isn't
 always obvious).

some of the errors in the db will get corrected over time, some will
 not.

I wasn't there however I did get a call at the beginning of there set
and Journey of the dragons was playing, I also heard Final Frontier..
From what I understand S2 opened the party, Suburban Knight didn't play
and Buzz went off like 4 or 5am. The people who played in Timeline was
Mike, Gerald, Mia, and Dex. As for the recordings, there were NO other
recordings except for Buzz's, or pictures taken. Two People were cleared
for photographs, and If anyone was taking pics or recording they were
 asked to leave.
Nice to hear you all enjoyed Timeline, I know they were practicing hard
all week bust out on all you!
 ~Erin

rolando deejayed with them, not dex. the others were buzz goree
and suburban knight, one on keys and one on a drum box of some
sort. dont know what those guys look like so i dont know which was
which, but the guy on the drums was way hot. the other guy on keys
was damn good too. they were really really good. inspiration
with the transition acapella over it was hot, as was hi tech
jazz. they dropped a few bits of classic electro (numbers, clear)
in with some of their electro cuts (cant remember the names,
sorry) which was very fun. definitely the best possible way to end
 the weekend.

wasnt Malcolm X called Detroit Red in his younger days, even though he
was
from Lansing, Michigan? Lansing Red somehow just doesnt carry the same
weight nor street appeal :^) but Lansing is a LONG way from Detroit.
must have something to do with the fact that Detroit is the only major
metropolis in the state of Michigan and the only city others around the
country (or world) know by name in this state.

when i chat with folks on soulseek i tell them i'm from lansing, mi. an hour
northwest of detroit. now i guess i can just say detroit, since i started
moving my belonging to hamtramck last weekend, yea i know its not detroit.

malcolm also live in mason mi. after his father was murdered.

which i think has more to do with the detroit red tag, he hated lansing.

but then lansing like flint have something incomon with detroit, the
automotive industry. so in that since they are one with GM.

How ironic that you mention this label. I ran into Andy Garcia from Docile
just a couple of hours ago at The Shelter here in Detroit. As far as
recommendations go, I like #3 (aqua colored label) the best. And for those
that haven't noticed, Docile recently was snagged up by Submerge. They are
also distributed through Watts. All around a pretty consistent label,
especially if you are into minimal techno. # 11 should be out in a couple
of
 months.

there has been a lot of CAN material released in recent years (mid-90's)

along with many others (FK, pete shelly, sonic youth, eno, etc.)

does holgar still do live pa's?

i will start off by saying that it is a wounderful sounding mixer, but
i would expect nothing less from AH.
i use there desk counsels for live sound and they rock.
but using the xzone 32 only once and that being in a club it really
slanted my opinion on the mixer and the trim pots being on the back
was my major beef.

this was a problem.
plus the curve on the volume fader is very sharp once you get past the
unity point. the curve really reminds me of a scratch mixers curve,
but this mixer is not even close to that. i'm used to a 20 db curve
and this was sharper then that, maybe you can change it but i did not
see a switch.

plus the line/phono switch is in the back and is a botton not a
switch, so you can not use that either as a kill.

i tend to play a lot of electro and techno and i could see the mixer
rockin it for house/techno. the smooth mix style, but if you slice it
up any, this mixer is a pain in the ass. royally (sorry tim)

All down to space on the front panel, you can set the gain while you're
cueing up and shouldn't need to tweak it, whereas the EQs, sends,
filter
etc. all need to be closer to hand while in the mix. Before I got a
Xone 32
I thought it was a stupid place to have the gains, but after a
 week or so of
getting used to it I've never given it another thought. It's just a
great
sounding well built piece of kit.

you get used to anything you do repeditivily. i have this guitar that
has a divit in the 3 fret on the b string. makes all my d cords sharp
in the octive. but i have trained myself to mute the octive.

but when you jump on my guitar and do not know that you will try to
tune it to no end with no luck!

and with those trims on the back in a dark club with no switch and a
crappy volume fader curve it makes it hard to do what you do and with
the deck already stacked against you one more joker in there well
you get my point.

well i'm used to a very simple mixer, i own a stanton sk-2f.
2 channel, 3 band 3 eq, adjustable volume curve, adjustable cross
fader curve, kill switches. a scratch mixer, even though i dont scratch.
so when i jump on the beast and have no monitors, playing in a
concrete box and have never used the mixer before. yea it was hell.

it is the only time i have used said mixer.
maybe if i was able to use it before hand a couple of times, because
it is hard to use a new mixer the first time you really dont know what
to expect, like how the curves are set, how the eq's cut (AH has
great eq's), how much the trim boosts, etc.

but this went beyond that to where i felt like a total doofus. it
distracted me so much it made it had to concentrate, plus the no monitor.

Didn't we just have this debate last month? Ultimately, you aren't gonna
convince anyone. Everyone has their preference. But us AH users
know we're
right and the rest of you are missing out. ;) For the record, I've
used the
Pioneers almost as much as the AH, and I do like them both - but
the AH is
a much better sounding and feeling beast IMO. Plus it's built like a
f*cking
 tank.

not a big fan of pioneer mixers, the sound, sounds like it is
struggling to get out of the mixer. I swear my stanton has a better
sound quality and is a quarter of the price.

but i can see where you are comig from with the AH. i just would not
buy the 32 i can not forgive the desinger, what the hell was that
person thinking? we will make the only mixer where its a pain in the
ass to get at the trim knobs and if it is mounted and the back is
closed off you can not even get at them.

 Hey all,

Just wondering what everyone's best record trades, or offers have been.

I've been slowly entering my collection into Discogs.com and everyonce in
a while I will get an email asking me if I'd be willing to trade.

I haven't done it yet since I have only one copy of just about everything
in my collection.

But today I received an email from someone offering me three new records
from his store (it's been mentioned on here before so I am pretty sure it's
legit) in exchange for my copy of Daniel Wangs Mechanical Birds EP.

I had to say no, because like I said I only have the one copy. But it was
pretty tempting.

Re: RE: (313) Dub

2003-10-01 Thread scotto
I'm not denying the meaning or existence of the patois word 'dup'
(I've heard a word which seems to derive from it, 'duppy'). But I
  always thought
the term 'Dub' as applied to reggae and eventually to any
  remixed 'version'
of a popular music track/song, came from the term 'dub' which
  is simply
another word for recording, especially making a copy of an existing
  recording.

i recently bought a comp on soul jazz records named the studio one
story. 2x12 with some great music. it also came with a 4 hour dvd with
interviews with almost everyone who is anyone in reggae.

they interviewed an engineer from studio one and he explained the term
dub as when jamacian dj tosted over record they turned out the vocal
track, so some of the dj were able to get into the studio and record
there version with the orignal music and there vocal. some times they
would add sounds from other popular songs through tape to tape transfers.

the main person they interviewed was clement coxsone dodd. this guy
is genius imo. started a studio one back in the 50's and recorded most
of the classic ska/reggae/dub artist. he also talked about how
jamacian dj would scratch the labels off records, (this was back in
the 50's) how they built big sound systems, had parties until the
early morning and how he to beat the of other jamacian dj getting the
same records as him went into a studio and recorded his own music to
dj. so no one else would have it.

sound familiar??

2003-09-22 Thread scotto
Now maybe the impact of rampant file sharing and burning stuff becomes
 clear... Think about it...

what about final scratch, cd-dj's, traktor, live?
people who buy records, buy records because they want them; just not the
music.

we were talking last night about dj hell and that first big track (forget
the name) he put out and how it was file shared so much. and how he lost so
much money on it.

i was thinking about it and said well maybe if that track had not be shared
to such an extreme, dj hell would not be the super-star dj he is now?

GT is the store never had anything in stock (what i was looking for at
least). the dj culture in the US is dropping off. people are spending money
else where.

until audiogalaxy closed down i was one of the biggest file sharer's i knew.
but i was looking for new music and the file sharing helped me find music i
liked and IMO made me buy MORE records then i would have, if i had not been
able to hear the music the sales would have never been made.

i think it is really funny the record companies use the amount of d/ls a
song get to track how it will do. they use the system they curse! its free
market research for them.

-scotto

ps i'm not saying this to start a_debate_on file_sharing_again_. i do think
artists should get paid. but the amount the RC make over the artist/creator

this become a very long rant!!!

Re: (313) Recommend...

2003-09-12 Thread scotto
yea thats it i'm home now and can look.
the b-side is my fav, but the slight acid feel of the a-side is very nice.

i also got the phil parnell on perlon, has a akufen feel to it, i must say i
like this one is very groovy.

i would also suggest the k-led - detroit city on force inc. it has a uhmm; a
very detroit feel to it. (lol) kinda reminds me of octive one or something
on kms. you cannot go wrong in buying this!
i just wish the saunderson synth sound was a little louder in the mix, and
the vox a little less. but its still a groovy tune and worth the cash imo.

(313) Review magas /luke eargoggle /counter-couture

2003-09-10 Thread scotto
I must say i had a great time at detroit contempory on fri sept 5.

counter-couture was pretty interesting, played some good music, it did seem
like he was having a hard time switching sequences and sounds between songs.
but once it was going the sounds were very nice. some of his tracks had a
krafterk/rother feel to them and a couple had a more red planet on electro
feel.

luke eargoggle, i came down to see this guy. i have a couple of his releases
on bunker. i was very pleased with lukes set. he played mostly work i was
unfamiliar with, but i must say i probable would not have recognized them
anyways. he used a mpc2k and was mixing his sounds from one track to the
other. the only track i picked out as being an lp version was audio
warrior (get this bunker release). but i did recognize some sounds/loops
from track and they had different basslines or leads. i talked with him and
he said he mixes his track together. with very good results IMO.

magas was very cool, the stage presents he has was worth the $7 itself. i
not as familiar with his work as i am with lukes. i will say his sound was
very simular from song to song. he must really like square wave synths? but
the energy he puts out on stage is what i imagine iggy used to put out back
in the day. yea i still have the stooges/sonic youth show ba-bouncing around
in my inner ear.
he played a new track that magas and luke are working on together, but luke
declined to sing so it was an insturmental. i really want to hear the
finished product there.

but like i said it was a great show, talked with loads of people i dont get
to see often. but did not see many of the listie i know. the show wasn't
over crowded but there was a good amount of bodies.

(313) mix / stooges-sonic youth review

2003-09-01 Thread scotto
have a techno/electro/industrial mix up on my website.
www.plaztikjezuz.com it's named indteclro.
it has some kraftwerk, dopplereffekt, vanity 6, i-f, mr velcro, rude 66,
anothy rother, f242, and others.
enjoy.

little late on my review here, but never late than never.

it was awesome (or in the words of chris farley that was awesome)
the openning act was really hot, dont know there names, the van something's?
but they had a great sound, very grimmy, they were a perfect match for the
show.

sonic youth played some great tracks spanning there whole career, the ended
with catholic block! (i was freakin out) dirty boots, one of the tracks in
the trilogy, shadow of a doubt (think it was, well one off of evol), kool
thing, and lots of others that slip my. the sound was not that great, it may
have been better if it would have been louder.

the stooges were pretty good, for not playing togther for 2 1/2 decades.
they played i wanna be your dog twice, so i think they ran out of songs they
could remember? i remember them playing no fun but i was pretty drunk by
this point and remember they did not play 1969, search and destroy, raw
power or gimme danger which i really wanted to hear. at one point durnin g
the show a guy ran across the stage and iggy screams let him up to the
security, who let him go. then the front rows rushed the stage. there must
have been 100 people on stage, ron was hidding behind his marshalls stacks,
he had like three guys in redwing shirts dualing him with air guitars! it
took them about 20 mins to get everyone off stage. and after that people
kept rushing the stage, you could tell security was getting mad because they
started to slam people to the ground, pretty roughly. after that they did
not do an encore, i dont think dte let them, iggy came back on stage the bye
bye music stopped the lights went off, for about 3 seconds, then everything
came back on and iggy left the stage.

(313) OT problems buying records online

2003-08-20 Thread scotto
hey all,
i have recently ran in to some problems with some online record orders.

I ordered some wax a 1200 light bulb from planet x and they did not have the
wax and wanted to charge me crazy shipping on the 1200 light bulb, i asked
if i could cancell the order and they said they have a restock fee. i
thought this odd. i have only encountered a restock fee on items that have
been shipped out and returned not on items that have not even been inside of
a package, let alone shipped.

i ordered a bunch records directly from schematics records in flordia.
i have been waiting since beginning of june, have emailed them several time
and they never reply (i am sending these to three of there public
addresses). i heard that the label was going through hard times on soulseek
in the electro chat room. does anyone know if they are still in business?

either way i am not buying any wax on line for a while.
any advice would be nice
thanks

Re: (313) V-Max Records

2003-07-27 Thread scotto
now your talking something from neck of the woods, lansing. lansings only
techno label!
i think v-max is still releasing?
the old crew heath bruener (sp?), trent abbe, and rob (something) is pretty
much broken up
but i know that heath released some after that.
the older releases are mostly red, black and white labels
they started at 1000 and went backwards

i see them around you just have to look for them
you maybe able to email heath and buy them?
sure someone here has it, i dont, i know trent has no email right now,
unsure of what happened to rob.

heath b - boistructure is the newest release, i think

i do know that heath has was doing some mastering down at nsc for a while,
but dont think he is still doing that?

 Hi ya Chris

Well for me (I'll go out on the limb here :) would be Technics.

Sure the Vestax have all the nice features but you could (with a little
bit
of practice) emulate the reverse action thus enhancing your technique :) +
16 is a good feature but one simple turn of a screw and you'll have the
same
 on technics.

there is a mod for the 1200 you can get where you tap the start/stop botton
twice and it goes in reverse.

i used vestax tables on friday. they work pretty good a friend has a pair.
he's playing our club night in two weeks. he really want to come over and
practice on 1200 because thats what the club has.
same goes for numark tables, this kid has the new ones with the pitch
holding, the design is cool and they feel alright but ne can not play on
tech's, so he brings his table with him when he plays out.

i forget the name of the bob marley song my box set was stolen from me some
years ago.
but it had this vocal sample (i think it went like this)as i stand at the
gates of zion
i was listening to on a really crappy clock radio so it was hard to hear all
that well. but the quo valis hi-hat was unmistakable. this radio works great
or npr or coast to coast but music is very bad on it.

the major sample was from quo valis.
as to it sounding good i've heard it once, probally as good as the kenny
dope frenzy, or that player record with the eminem samples.
just be the first one to play it out.
