I have a pretty good idea what's been happening downtown and what's not been 
happening in the rest of the city having lived there most of my life. Chess 
pieces are great, but there is a long way to go before positive progress is 
achieved; regular neighborhoods need to start turning around. 

I honesty don't think that Detroit is not at the stage to support two large 
techno festivals, especially since they are not together. I hope it can, but I 
don't see it. 

If this new festival would have been scheduled, say the following weekend after 
Movement, I could see some of the "unity" and community the article alludes to. 
After parties and day raves could have been the glue and the two fests the book 
ends.

And no, I have no idea what Carol does for a living. What I do remember is that 
a lot of people weren't paid when she was last at the helm and next thing I 
heard she moved on and started ravestivals in other cities. Kudos to her. 

If she's been sleeping on a bed made of money this whole time, why did it take 
a decade for DEMF to come back? Just curious.

You lose 4th amendment right every time you get pulled over by a cop here ;)

Bur seriously, it's always easy crossing over to Canada..it's coming that
they hassle you. I find that a passport is the best solution. Southern
California has had to deal with the problem of random checkpoints for years,
and they're pretty efficient at conducting the stops. They usually don't
stop every car.

If they're looking for terrorists in those 2 areas, they're going to get
bored quick.

of this: If you live in Detroit you technically have no 4th amendment rights
under federal law, as the city resides within 25 miles of the US/Canada
border.  In the past week checkpoints with random searches were set up near
Port Huron and Treton. Currently there are no plans to install them in
Detroit, but who knows about the future, with "homeland security," being
such a pressing concern. May be somthing to consider if you cross the border
for parties.

So there is this new club in Mpls I went to check out because Tuesdays are
supposed to be techno (remember we have very few that more than just
meatmarket sports bars) and at first I thought it could be decent but soon
realized all the things that were wrong with it.

The good things:

It's big and very open
The bass hits you when you walk in the door (though they could use more)
the layout is interesting (this is both good and bad)
there is a second floor that overlooks the dancefloor
decent dancefloor light system
nice big windows up front
central downtown location - on busline and right next to new light rail
system being built - more parking available than any other club in the city
$5 to get in


The bad:

First of all - it's a converted McDonald's restaurant (I swear I went home
with the smell of cigarettes and french fries in my clothes).
They've left the original stone tile floor for the entire place - including
the dance floor.
No defined dance space - meaning you walk right into this big open space as
soon as you walk into the building.

only one place to lounge - in a corner upstairs and only enough for 2,

the ugly:
the Dj booth was under the stairs around the corner from the dancefloor -
impossible to monitor what is going on
trance and progressive house and no techno - one decent house tune the
entire night

I'm curious about places that make it to your personal list of good or bad
clubs - not the music so much but the actual physical space
what is it about the club?

It just means a dance party...or a party where dancing is the main focus. So
UR doing a cabaret should not be surreal but great. It will give the out of
towners and others a chance to see a different part of Detroit as well which
is a good thing.

Cabaret, as I'm sure any 212 313er will tell you, is an evil word in NYC.
The lack of a cabaret license was used by the Giulani administration to shut
down bars if the patrons were found dancing in the establishment. These
licenses were more difficult to acquire than liquor licenses. Crazy..

that "No UFO's" feel with less bassline attack. Don't know which track I
heard, but I would definitely buy the 12".

PGM003 is actually a release from an artist on called Tangible (Dr. Robot on
313). It will be out shortly. Test pressings are complete and I'm waiting to
hear back from some distributors. You can hear some audio snippets at the
site below under Images/Audio.

PGM004 will be coming in 2 months and will include some Ultradyne,
Dopplereffekt, and "others".

I'm sure they'd be down to do this again. Amsterdam came close to going out
of business early last month but has revived. They have also started a night
called Orange (last Saturday every month, I think) for which they are
looking for musicians to do. I don't think anyone is being paid yet, but

I'm sure everyone feels your pain Giles. As it seems that there only about
5-10 people "debating" this issue it would be nice if they argued with each
other privately. All of us are aware that this is distribution list, but is
there really a need for us to be spectators to this verbal "accident" of
differing opinions? I am not trying to police anything here but it truly
seems that only a few people are going back and forth at each other at this
point. Whatever good intentions were meant by your differing views have now
been lost.

What I am truly baffled by is why continue to copy the list? I have an email
client in which you have to purposefully hit CC. Just curious? Do you
guys feel you are enlightening us at this point?

I'm not a big fan of the vocal black water track. It doesn't sound like the
vocals were written with the track. It sounds like an add on instead of a
completely new mix.

Also,, I must say that i'm disappointed with the soundtrack to the comic
book. with a few exceptions the c.d. sounds like outakes instead of fresh
material.  The Marco Passarani track is the obvious stand-out. And
Although,,, mills, walker,and the advent add some good tracks,, All together
they don't make a good "soundtrack".

That UR show was great last night!  The talent/entertainment, intense energy
in that room was insane!  I loved it... the 2 live pa's were awesome, I

Thank you for an excellent post. A lot of people would like to gloss over
the fact that racism still exists in America and yes, in the Detroit area.
They would like to pretend it's all done and over with and has not had an
effect on the creation of this music and that it does not matter what skin
color is behind the music. I would like to think that most people on this
list are above this BS of skin color, and that is what they are trying to
express by saying "why does it matter?"

The first poster was not trying to bring up a racist topic AT ALL! It's
pretty sad that as soon as someone asks any questions on this list that
include the words "black artists" you have all these people jumping on him
and saying "it's not about that!!". It's not? Maybe not to you but to some
people it may be.

The same thing goes for the misquote of Juan Atkins the other day and the
poster losing respect for him. That is the problem with the world today.
Someone has a different view of things and because they do not agree with
your world view you have "no respect" for him any more. Sad.

Techno has been bastardized enough by drugs, raves, etc. and is now for the
most part considered to the outside world that doesn't know any better as
white music. Hence the frustration that Eddie was speaking of techno being
ignored by black audiences. Granted, a lot of that is caused by the
popularity of this thing they call rap and hip hop nowadays...pop music.

All this to say: if someone on this is asking about black
influences/artists, don't assume they are trying to start a thread about
racism...

 Let me preface this post be saying that I haven't posted on this list
in a long time, but I feel that this topic is too important to ignore.  It
is impossible to analyze or understand cultural products without looking at
their social context; now some of you may not want to understand, would
prefer to be entertained without understanding, but I'm going to assume that
if it is art then techno has potentials to raise consciousness and on a list
dedicated to discussing DETROIT techno we have an obligation to try to
understand rather than simply consume and enjoy.  First of all, it's
impossible to understand any AMERICAN music, much less DETROIT techno,
without looking at issues of racial injustice specifically the relationships
of whites and blacks.  WHY IS THIS?  Because the rhythms that are behind all
of our popular musics are to a great degree African derived, that's what
funk and soul is, it's the memory of these African rhythms passed down from
generation to generation by a people who were taken from their homeland.
Billy Hart, the great jazz drummer (in the 70's played with Pharoah Sanders
and the Herbie Hancock sextet) has lectured about the African derivation of
many of these rhythms, and has mentioned the possibility that these rhythms
may even have specific characteristics, that they may have physical and
spiritual aspects that act upon us when we hear them, an intriguing
possibility.  The point is, these rhythms were brought over by African
slaves, and although the white masters attempted to completely destroy their
culture and humanity, these rhythms were preserved and passed down...  And
then, in the 20th century, we find a new situation--slavery has ended, and
again and again African-Americans are innovating and creating brilliant new
styles of music, combining the sounds of their and environment and Western
European influences with their own funky rhythms that they have preserved
through all these years, rhythms rooted in African spiritual culture.  But
what happens???  Their rhythms are constantly hijacked and glossed over,
their innovations are taken from them, their names are erased, and
white-washed cultural commodities are produced that the white masses can
handle, commodities that no longer preserve the memory of an African
spiritual heritage.
 Blues, jazz, rock/pop, house, techno, it's been happening the whole
20th century and now it looks like it's going to continue right on into the
21st.  Meanwhile, in a city like Detroit you have a state of de fact
segration, a city full of African-Americans who have been abondoned to live
in a wasteland while the suburbs that surround them prosper, a place where
white people from the suburbs are AFRAID to visit the city, a city full of

Very good essay, Lester. I agree on most points except one:

Detroit), they are too blinded by short-sighted concerns tied to racism to
truly engage in the help that the city needs.


I don't think that Detroit's suburbs (generalizing here...) are interested
in anything but the stadiums and casinos downtown. The main factors are that
the majority of jobs are not located in Detroit but in the suburbs so unless
you really enjoy hockey, baseball, or gambling there really is no need to go
to Detroit (understandable). I'm not saying the avoidance of Detroit is
conscious in any way, but if you take away the need to interact with
downtown, you ask yourself what's down there that I can't do a couple of
miles from home?

There are many cities in the U.S. that are thriving without casinos to foot
the bill and turn their downtown into a shitty version of Las Vegas. Go a
couple of blocks from the Motor City casino and you're in an area most
people wouldn't be caught dead walking through. Back in the day when the
RenCen was built there were a lot of complaints that it segregated itself
with the infamous wall and created a virtual bubble with the rest of
downtown Detroit. These casinos have done the same thing.

A positive example of rejuvenation was (yes, was) Trapper's Alley in
Greektown. Before the renovation, it was literally an alley of cobblestone
with some antique shops and a historical landmark. At its peak (84-86), this
was the place to hang, shop, eat, buy music on the top floor, they even had
a club in there. The point is, it was an attraction for suburbanites as well
as locals without alienation of either group. Casinos will never be the
answer. They do not provide enough of a service the community, other than
taxes, to be a positive addition.

As far as Kwame goes, I think that's a good thing. I went to Cass Tech with
him and it's really cool to see one of my classmates as mayor, but strange
as well. It will be good to see what a fresh young mind will bring to the
table. Our last 2 mayors have put the city in the position it is now. It's a
shame and a disgrace, it really is.

I was blessed to be able to attend a couple of inaugural events for Kwame
Kilpatrickand I've been trying to think of a way to put my feelings and
thoughts on his election into words.  A discussion I had last night with
St. Louis' first black mayor Freeman Bosley (now a business owner and talk
show host) help crystallize many of these thoughts into something that
should be relatively coherent.  First I'll talk about the events
themselves.

I got a chance to attend both the Inaugural Ball and the Club Crawland to
a certain extent these events represented a stark departure from the
previous mayor's events.  Not so much in the type of event, but moreso the
crowd.  To give you a brief examplewhen Dennis Archer St. was first
inaugurated, a party geared for the younger crowds was held for him at the
State Theater.  I attended along with my wife, and though we were glad we
went, the first thing that jumped out at us was the crowd.  Even though
the event was open to the public and advertised as such, the only people
there seemed to be related through a number of black upper-class networks.
The men and women there either knew each other through Jack and Jill, or
through a number of prestigious private and public schools (University of
Detroit, Cranbrook, Country Day, Cass Tech, Renaissance), or through a
number of prestigious universities (Northwestern, University of Michigan,
Harvard Law School).  I was lucky enough to almost literally sneak into
the University of Michigan, but I got the feeling from that event that if
I would have gone to Wayne St. instead, I would not have attendedor if I
had attended I would not have known anyone there.  As the author of "Our
Kind of People" (a journalistic account of the black upper class) notes,
it was indeed like the black upper class had finally gotten "thei

Anyone else check out this show? Very good show, in my opinion. The 2
opening DJ's were pretty good as well and they even had some live conga
players during the sets. Very nice!  The crowd, though small, was very
diverse. A refreshing alternative to the Motor crowd. It seemed they went on
later than they wanted too or weren't looking at the time (went on about
1:30) because when they went to do their first shout out at 2 the sound was
shut down and it was "bye bye folks".

All you have to do to make it sound good on vinyl is this:

1. No out of phase frequencies below 200hz.  Basically, keep your bass
mono and panned center.  You can check for this if you listen to your
track in mono -- if the bass gets phasey or fades in and out, you're doing
it wrong. This is the main cause of record skip, as out of phase bass will
result in a shallow groove at an extreme of the left to right travel of the
needle.

2. Don't overdo high frequences -- above 16khz.  While vinyl records can
reproduces frequencies in excess of 20khz, if they are too loud relative
to other frequencies, they tax the ability of the cutting head to move
far enough fast enough.

3. Don't go over 12 1/2 minutes per side for a fixed-pitch lathe, and
roughly 14 minutes for a variable pitch lathe.  Once you go past those
time limits the track pitch gets smaller and you literally cut at half
volume.

4. It's helpful to make your tracks mono-compatible, which means to go easy
on stereo expansion, stereo flange, etc.  Listen to your tracks in mono
and make sure they don't sound weird. Vinyl has a lot more channel cross
talk than digital audio, and really out of phase material will sound
fluttery
and hollow due to partial phase cancellation.

A lot of producers don't bother to learn these basics which aren't rocket
science.  The biggest problem is the high-frequency overload, which I think
comes from people being half deaf from too many loud nights in the club.

I know that Keith and the other people working on the Shari Vari project
know how to produce tracks that will sound good on vinyl, so I don't think
that they are the problem here.

Sure.  Because Mike Banks is a good producer, period.  He makes tracks
with an even overall use of the sound spectrum, and he avoids the pitfalls

transferring to vinyl. People are not making tracks that will sound good on
records anymore."

I was fortunate enough to hear about a 2 hour discourse (almost a rant ;)
about the subject from our nameless masterer. I think he may have a valid
point. He feels that a lot of digital production techniques (stereo
expanding to the point of no return, certain wacky effects, we know what
they are, etc.) sound great when listening to it digitally on our computers
and CD's. We have to understand that there is much more room to play in the
digital domain. Not so in records. Again, these are all his thoughts.

I won't go so far as to say that this may have caused the mastering
problems, maybe the equipment is antiquated, I don't know. I'm just trying
to give perspective from the horse's mouth by proxy. I think he has been
pretty frustrated as of late and he did go on and on about a project he was
working on that he could not tone down enough to keep the needle from doing
its own dance on wax. No idea who he was talking about, I pretty much let
him vent :)

record."
