Definitely. We use git for everything - our erp source code, mobile apps
source, etc. are all version-controlled, so getting structure files out as
json or yaml files would bring 4d out of the 2009's.

Chip asked "why mechanical"
I'm an ssd fanatic, and have insisted on every new machine having an SSD
for years, so I was leery about doing this. It seems from the literature
that mechanical drives actually have a higher expected lifespan than
SSD's. The other reason is because if a mechanical
you can do private repos on github for free. there are other servies that
do free private repos. i'm pretty sure gitlab does free private repos, too.
if you're a google apps user you can use google cloud project repos. those
are no extra charge.
paying for a git service gets to be sticky
I had a file mode (permissions) surprise with one of our projects. It's a
project that is bring brought forward from 2k4->17->18 project
So for those of you that run into this, you can do
``` git config core.fileMode false ```
Right now the *.gitignore* I'm using is thus:
```
