RE: Any Success Running 4D v13.6 on Win 10 Pro?

2021-01-19 Thread Lo via 4D_Tech
Hi Ken

Standalone 4D.
Standard server - client
Both fine.
Not used a built server I'm afraid.

All 4D versions from 2003 up work under Win 10 for me.
Along with most Windows server versions. Not tried them all.
Some older plug in issues.
Some need DEP setting, but that caused 4D to fail to start entirely - no error
message.
Some UI issues in older versions but nothing serious.

Best
Lo

I'm trying to help out a user of a 4D v13.6 Built Server. They upgraded from
Win 7 to Win 10 Pro without asking - and the built server will not run.

Ken Geiger said he believed 4D v13 and Win 10 Pro were not compatible.
Thanks Ken!

Before I tell the end user that they need to either upgrade their 4D
application or revert back to Win 7... Has anyone had success running
v13.6 on Win 10 Pro?

Thanks,
Ken

RE: 4D World Tour ... Way more than your moneysworth

2019-05-15 Thread Lo via 4D_Tech
Well said Pat

Having been a 4D developer for 30 odd years I've been to several of JPRs
training sessions and always come away having learnt something valuable.
Well wort the cost.

On the train home from the London World Tour I re-designed our old record
change auditing system.
Entities and ORDA.
Going to be much simpler to use and easier to maintain.
Can't wait to build it.

Love and kisses
Lo

Just do it.

-Original Message-

My head is buzzing with ideas and information following the World Tour training
day with JPR in sunny London. If you are serious about your work and it isn't
too late for you, you need to go!

OH BUT IT COSTS MONEY

Yes, it does cost a little. Probably somewhat less than you charge for a day's
work.

Find out what is so great about ORDA. And Collections. And Objects. And other
4D stuff.

In addition to the training you get a USB stick full of excellent,
well-documented demo databases that JPR and other 4D gurus have put a lot of
time and effort into creating. They contain code and forms that you can use in
your own 4D apps - these are well worth the cost of the training.

You also get:

- a bottomless coffee/tea pot
- plenty of snacks
- a decent lunch
- a chance to meet your 4D reps
- a chance to meet some of your fellow developers

JUST DO IT! (if you haven't already missed your local event).

Pat

PS
No, I have not been hired by the 4D PR team :)

Hi Tom

Close...
It was a Beaver.
Skipping obvious comment that would get me kicked off the list!

As I recall Roy was not the only one grinning.
We all enjoyed the red carpet press reception on our return to the hotel.
Although Roy did insist it was for some old queen or another.

Not many characters like Roy-Suzi.
Many of us will miss her.

Love and kisses

Sad news indeed. I met Roy at the Vancouver Summit where he convinced a few of
us to take a plane ride on a de Havilland Otter to Vancouver Island. He grinned
like a kid having ice cream for the first time.

My condolences to her friends and family.

SFTP

2018-08-04 Thread Lo via 4D_Tech
Dear friends

I am of course very dense so please excuse a question I'm sure has been
answered before.

Any way of transferring files using SFTP in native 4D?
IC have FTP commands, can these use SFTP? Doesn't seem to work for me.
Or any other hints?

OS : Windows
4D : any version that works

Many thanks

RE: What do you use to monitor your offsite servers?

2018-07-16 Thread Lo via 4D_Tech
Hi Kirk

Lots of options.
And lots of cost options, of course!

I support customers in far flung places (From the UK) and have done so for some
time.
Half way around the world, and often with very limited bandwidth.

Various products over the years, but TeamViewer for the last many.
Yes, it costs, but it get what you pay for.
So, depending on your need, and pricing model?
Costs me nothing. That's what customers are for.

Solid, reliable, and good performance on slightly dicky connections.

something else.

Suggestions?

RE: Clean Slate - Modern User Experience.

2017-04-17 Thread Lo via 4D_Tech
Hi Chaps

Thanks Peter and Tim.
4D UI - spaghetti soup I sometimes bump into...
Often hard...

>> Things to avoid:

>> Ambiguity (e.g. colour coded text)

And in this part of the world we even have people who are colour blind - but
they can spell 😊
People of northern European origin: about 8% of men will be red/green colour
blind.
This also varies by race of course - Colour blindness is almost unknown in the
Inuit people. But I suppose they see mostly white anyway.
And how often do we see coloured text? Green = good, Red = bad? Too often I
suggest.
I'd also suggest we all give a thought to text size.
I've seen far too many 4D systems with text I can't read easily. Remember the
fat old men! A demographic I, and a few others on this list, belong to.
It's perhaps more common from Mac based developers deploying on PCs? An
historic difference between the two platforms?

I'm with Tim on this one.
For redundancy read dis-ambiguity (is that even a word).
Iconography is culture bound. What may seem obvious to you may be obscure, or
even worse, have a different meaning, in a different cultural context.
We have a system we have deployed in various parts of the world, and I've had
questions about the meanings of a few icons I thought were self-explanatory
from some of our middle-east customers.
I've no idea how these would work in the far-east!

I'm sure we all have a section on the bookshelves with a 'work' section?
Code complete...
Pragmatic programmer...
Et al...

For UI?
Title: Understanding Comics
Author: Scott McCloud
For comics read graphic/picture/icon...
Yes, it's a big comic about comics, but UI should be fun?
