To get to safe mode:
Reboot and keep quickly tapping the F8 key until you see the start menu.
Then choose Safe Mode.

Dell dimension 4300 was given to me with a 17 inch emachine monitor The
monitor has a volume control but it is not working and when I hook up desktop
speakers I get no sound. Is there a way to figure out if the Dell had sound?

Yes, doing the system restore can take quite a while until you reboot
and get back to the desktop. It sounds like it was successful as far as
fixing your system files and getting the All Programs menu back. It
shouldn't cause any problems like you describe with Gmail.
