COVID 19 and the disability movement

In the light of the COVID19 pandemic and with the aim to support
a disability-inclusive response to the crisis, International Disability
Alliance (IDA) has launched this webpage to share the most recent updates
and resources as they become available. If you have any updates on how
COVID 19 is affecting persons with disabilities in your area of work, or
want to share any good practices or lessons learnt, contact IDA's inclusive
humanitarian adviser, Elham Youssefian via eyoussef...@ida-secretariat.org.

International Disability Alliance Key Recommendations toward a
Disability-Inclusive COVID19 Response

Read our full paper on key recommendations in both PDF and Word formats.

Espanol - PDF | Word

Our key recommendations include:

Persons with disabilities must receive information about infection
mitigating tips, public restriction plans, and the services offered, in a
diversity of accessible formats with use of accessible technologies

Additional protective measures must be taken for people with certain types
of impairment

Rapid awareness raising and training of personnel involved in the response
are essential

All preparedness and response plans must be inclusive of and accessible to
women with disabilities

No disability-based institutionalization and abandonment is acceptable

During quarantine, support services, personal assistance, physical and
communication accessibility must be ensured

Measures of public restrictions must consider persons with disabilities on
an equal basis with others

Persons with disabilities in need of health services due to COVID19 cannot
be deprioritized on the ground of their disability

OPDs can and should play a key role in raising awareness of persons with
disabilities and their families.

OPDs can and should play a key role in advocating for disability-inclusive
response to the COVID19 crisis

Please ask the company for confirmation before you finalize your

[AI] 5 tips for the blind to stay safe from Coronavirus pandemic

5 tips for the blind to stay safe from Coronavirus pandemic

Blindness in the time of Coronavirus could be dangerous for some,
especially if they live in a densely populated country like India.
What makes it even more of a risk is the fact that it won’t be always
possible to avoid physical contact.

I’m not sure if this’s the case if you live in a Western country where
independence is highly encouraged and people don’t so readily
intervene in the activities of a blind person, but at the same time,
without personal experiences, I wouldn’t like to make a general
statement about life as a blind person in the West.

Re: [AI] Staying in Mumbai

2020-03-21 Thread Ajay Minocha
Hello Ankit,

Agree with Sandeep, you must get a confirmation from them and make
your plans afterwards. I have been living in Mumbai since last 4 years
and should be happy to help if required.

Although I wouldn't recommend an NGO but NITTIE Powai does have
facility where students from outside Mumbai who are interning in the
city can get a room for a nominal fee.

In 2014, I was also interning in Mumbai for couple of months and had
staid there, they charged around 6,000 for a twin sharing room. The
canteen there is reasonably good, so the food thing is also pretty
much sorted. Nahur is approachable through an auto rickshaw from Powai
so you shouldn't have any issue commuting. My number is below this
email, you can call me anytime.

Cheers,
Ajay

Re: [AI] Sound change in Jaws during reading bold and italics & Capitalisation

2020-03-21 Thread shadabhsn
Hey Shankar,

You're a genius!

I have set it to attribute and the reading is cool.

Once I also learnt about capitalisation--Jaws beeps on the capital
letters--but I found it disturbing so I had to remove it.

Can you tell a similar option (change in voice) for it as well?

Thanks in advance,

Shadab

Sorry,
Yes, there is the option called skim reading tool, where you can select the
different set of reading options.
To activate the tool, press alt insert letter s and select the available
options from the list.

Subject: [AI] Sound change in Jaws during reading bold and italics

Hello dear Access Indians!

I was wondering if we can change Jaws sound when it reads bolded or
italicised text.

Voiceover does this by reading such text by giving a break.

Kurzweil also used to decrease its voice rate.

Thanks in advance for your help!
