Re: [AI] Some doubts regarding Braille.
Yes sir, In head phones, it is not at all difficult for me. I usually study using my headphones. And on speakers as well I manage well on 70 to 75 % speed. regards On 4/3/13, Padmanabham padmanabam.mu...@gmail.com wrote: is it possible to under stand the document at 70 to 75 speed? - Original Message - From: Ajay Minocha ajayminoc...@gmail.com To: accessindia@accessindia.org.in Sent: Wednesday, April 03, 2013 8:49 AM Subject: Re: [AI] Some doubts regarding Braille. Hi bro, Thanks a lot for cutting the short story long. My story has been allmost similar to you the only difference was, I didn't have any thing for note taking in my 12th standard. I generally use jaws at a speed of 70 to 75% while reading a document or studying. Otherwise, it is 85+. But I have never tried the way you suggested me. And, I am not planning to use braille in main streme. It is mainly for taking notes and labeling. regards On 4/3/13, Amar Jain amarjain2...@gmail.com wrote: Hey Champ, First, I am not talking of advantages or disadvantages of Braille or technology. Lot of it has been already said. Second, to others lot of things may sound irrelevant, but for you, its just to give you experience of all situations which I have been in. For busy bosses, read it while relaxing, and oh yeah, you can also invite me for a cup of coffee if you are having one in your hand :) Look, I had pursued most of my schooling in a hindi medium blind school, thus using computer for us was like dealing with something foreign to our brain for quite a long time. Though how I ended up learning computer is altogether separate thing, but for quite a long, Braille was the only source I relied upon. Now to address your question of taking notes in the class where you are the only figure who is blind etc., I did in my 12th class where I was studying with sighted colleagues (specifically addressing in this context).. Now a days you can take advantage of luxury offered by the Braillers, note takers and Braille Displays, which reduces your effort of embossing the dot on the paper and the sound which is being generated. And as far as speed is concerned, trust me even if you use that interpoint slate or what we called German slate for quite a long which comes without the additional guide, for day to day purposes, someone new listening to your speed can give the compliment that you are sounding like an old Braille Press hammering for embossing dots on the paper! You can complete both the sides of a page in 2.5 minutes. Of course using devices can substantially increase your speed. So, it was never a problem even with those traditional methods. And now with the devices, surely you won't feel anything bad if at all one wants to feel that way. Now when I entered in my college life, which was firstly English medium, so I could take the best advantage offered by the computer and scanning softwares, and that is what I did eventually. From that point onwards till date, where I am about to give a good start to my career, I didn't have a situation where I had to use Braille for reading in general, writing, making presentation (reading the speaker notes or looking at slides). I could well manage it with Jaws. So, what you should be considering essentially is: 1. What is your proficiency with Assistive Technologies or Screen Reader to be specific? How quickly you are able to follow and speak it out when you listen anything? Try reading a paragraph and see the result. Kartik is solid example of what speed may mean to someone. I am not great at it, but I will surely make use of technology itself and eventually come down to a good level. While reading, don't just only consider that you are able to follow the word and throw it out from your mouth, punctuation, pauses, (those minute things which are told to us for being a good reader). Record and listen back. That's the best I can think off. 2. Based on what you opt for, the nature of the material which you are going to refer would also be a factor to be considered. Remember Nikita didi's example of taking phone numbers 3. Do you have a problem of not knowing the right spellings? If so, reading Braille can eliminate the same to a great extent. To keep the short story long ( Its reverse in my case, :) ), on a day to day basis Braille may not be a usable option despite the fact of having good speed etc, as papers, actually the bulk, availability of space, environment are the constraints. And in my case, add laziness after knowing computer too :d But having known Braille can help you in situation like that of making presentations if after considering all of what has been said here, you feel that there may be scope of delivering better if you use Braille as one of the options. Labeling also can be a point to be considered as though there are software ways of doing it, but just by touching the Braille, you can figure out quickly I guess.

The cops are coming Little Yadav / DNAApril 3, 9:06 ISTMumbai: The police recently warned and let off an IT professional, attached with a company in Vikhroli, for what thousands do surreptitiously every day. He was downloading movies from a torrent site on his office computer. Most internet junkies would never anticipate that downloading songs and movies from torrents can invite a policeman home. But that is beginning to happen. Soon after the incident last week, the company emailed its employees asking them to stay off torrent sites. With a rising number of complaints, mostly from owners of copyrighted songs and movies, the cyber crime cell and the newly-formed social media laboratory have been monitoring internet users with large data downloads. There have been several such complaints recently... Only a person with a copyright can be a complainant, Himanshu Roy, joint commissioner (crime), said. This is a cognisable offence under the Copyrights Act. In the Vikhroli case, too, the complainant was the copyright holder. For those who do not know, downloading from a torrent site has always been illegal. It is akin to buying pirated DVDs from a CD seller; only this is done within the safe confines of your house, Vijay Mukhi, cyber security expert, said. Not many people are aware of the fact that using a torrent site is illegal, he said. Mukhi said action can be taken against an accused under the Copyrights Act, the IPC, or the IT Act. Section 66 of the IT Act is very elaborate and covers several offences of similar nature... It is not only your office machine that is under the scanner, but also your personal computer. Asked how exactly the Mumbai police would keep track of who is downloading what from the internet, Roy said: We have a team of cyber experts and we have started a social media lab. We track trends and with the help of the internet service providers, we conduct random checks on the content that is being downloaded from certain sites. [AI] need to punish states for mising RTE dead line
There is a need to punish states that have not done enough in three years ( in implementation of Right to Education Act), said, Dr M M Pallam Raju Union Minister of Human Resource Development (HRD) at the 61st meeting of Central Advisory Board on Education (CABE). The Minister said that there is consensus not to extend the deadline. Most of the states including ones ruled by Congress demanded extension and painted a grim scenario of thousands of schools closing down for missing the deadline. Raju also denied allegations that the Centre is being stubborn about extending the deadline and said people are free to move court against non-compliance by schools. Allying fears of large number of schools would close down following non- compliance of RTE Acte, Raju said the process of closing schools would be carried out by the state governments and they can be lenient. According to MHRD officials closing of schools are a long process running into several stages under which first notices would be sent out to schools and sufficient time would be given to them for reply, reported Times of India. How to answer your 'why' Surender, I am little confused. Let me attempt with few questions Ninety five per cent of subscribers are disabled here, aren't they? And disability discourse in India only focus on educational elevation and employment opportunities insofar. Everyday living with dignity demands deeper delving in the discourse. Such painful postings are posted in order to generate more thinking and promote preparedness in dealing with such circumstances not only in our own lives, but to give auxiliary aid to others in need. finally, I wonder, if any NGO exists in the country, which looks after the issues of sexual assault faced by women with blindness. [AI] FM Transmitter and wireless keyboard
Hi, I love playing around with gadgets. Offlate I have this crazy idea of interacting with my desktop or laptop quite away from it, rather than sitting there at a table for a long time and getting back aches etc. I've been thinking of a cost-effective solution that I believe might work and somewhat reduce the number of hours spent sitting at the computer and still be able to interact with it at least at home. The solution that I have in my mind is to get an FM transmitter and plug it into the 3.5mm audio port of my computer, tune my FM radio to the frequency of the transmitter, and control my computer using a wireless keyboard. I have a foldable waterproof wireless keyboard and an FM radio. The maximum working range of the keyboard is up to 15 meters or 49 feet in radius. But the thing I'm worried about is how far does a typical FM transmitter work? Anyone using it? Do you have any other good alternatives to the above apart from suggesting me to take breaks frequently? I think an FM transmitter should not cost me more than INR.800. What do you think? Hi You can also use blue-tooth headphone which you can also use on your mobile for being away from the desktop. Folks have also been controlling their desktops by using voice recognition this way. Now JSay is on the path of becoming free to use. Distance of course would be about 10 to 20 metres away through blue-tooth. [AI] Some doubts regarding Braille
Dear Ajay, You can learn Braille in a desired time frame. However, as you may be aware, there are two grades in Braille, grade 1 and grade 2. Grade 1 involves learning to write words using the full spelling and grade 2 is the contracted form. It requires a lot of practice to gain proficiency in the latter as well as reading, but will come handy once attained. It really depends on your level of comfort and the particular situation that you are exposed to in deciding between braille and a laptop for use. Each has its own benefits. [AI] NCERT survey paints grim enrolment picture for disabled
One part of the report is very noticeable. Surveyers have given emphasis on the status of SC ST and Girl disabled students enrollment condition in the report. It is not a hidden fact that the most of opportunities available to disabled in matters of education and employment are grabbed by upper caste disabled aspirants. And Caste hierarchy plays a major role in further accentuating marginalisation of students belonging from afore mentioned categories. more studies of such lenth are need of the hour. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/NCERT-survey-paints-grim-enrolment-picture-for-disabled/articleshow/19352994.cms By Himanshi Dhawan, TNN | Apr 3, 2013 NEW DELHI: As many as 13 states and Union Territories showed a decline in girls' enrolment, while about 10 displayed a dip in overall students' admission painting a dismal picture of inclusive education for children with disabilities. A nationwide study — conducted by the NCERT to assess enrolment, access and retention of students with disabilities found that states like Bihar, Delhi, Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, West Bengal among others — had all shown a decline in enrolment of girls as opposed to boys. The study was done after it was found that children with disabilities (CWD) have been consistently marginalized within school or excluded from institution and their enrolment in regular schools dropped significantly as they reach the level of secondary education. The NCERT study, sought to evaluate the implementation of the centrally-sponsored scheme of Inclusive Education of the Disabled at the Secondary Stage (IEDSS), also focused on identifying the existing good practices of inclusive education, the efforts made to meet the special needs of girl students with disabilities and of students with disabilities belonging to scheduled castes, scheduled tribes and other disadvantaged groups. Among the states where students' enrolment had increased under the IEDSS were Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Haryana, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal and Karnataka. A decrease in enrolment was registered in Bihar, Delhi, Kerala, Rajasthan, Tripura and Punjab among others. According to the study, only 12 of the 27 states provided training on special needs (SN) education to general teachers while only three states have provided training for more than five days. Majority of the teachers (88.1%) were unable to give response on meeting the special educational needs (SEN) of CWD in the classroom. Most of the states (20) are still following regular system of evaluation for CWD, and only six states have provided information on relaxation in admission procedures for students with disabilities in terms of age of admission, reservation and no rejection policy. -- Avinash Shahi MPhil Research Scholar Centre for the Study of Law and Governance Jawaharlal Nehru University New Delhi India Register at the dedicated AccessIndia list for discussing accessibility of mobile phones / Tabs on: http://mail.accessindia.org.in/mailman/listinfo/mobile.accessindia_accessindia.org.in Search for old postings at: http://www.mail-archive.com/accessindia@accessindia.org.in/ To unsubscribe send a message to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in with the subject unsubscribe. [AI] Will voting process ever be disabled friendly?
As elections near, the disabled want better arrangements | EPS By Meera Bhardwaj New Indian Express: 02nd April 2013 http://newindianexpress.com/cities/bangalore/article1526143.ece Seven per cent of the population is physically challenged and out of this, nearly 3.5-4 per cent, who are eligible, want to participate in the forthcoming election process. However, there is a big question mark as far as their voting participation is concerned due to unfriendly policies and inaccessible polling booths in many parts of the city and state. If you have ever visited a voting booth anytime, you can see that there is either no place to sit or even stand and for the disabled, entering these places itself is a Herculean task and casting their votes without assistance is another difficult task. Elections are around the corner and poll fever has already caught up with aspirants and other sections of the people what with political parties burning the midnight oil to finalise their list of candidates. With Bangalore and rest of Karnataka witnessing a single day’s poll on the 5th of May, hectic days are on the anvil with many citizens running from pillar to post to get their voter ID card so as to exercise their franchise. But what about the disabled? Abhishek, who turned 18 this year, is frantically trying to get a voter ID card but it is a big task for him as he needs help to visit these centres. “With great difficulty and aided by my friends, I visited the centre, but could not get my card because of improper documentation. The centre had no ramp and I had to stand in the hot sun, which for me was a tough proposition. As it is, the authorities are least bothered about the rights of the disabled,” he said. Krishnamurthy, a bank employee rues the advent of the polling day as it is a nightmare standing and waiting with no place to sit or assistance to cast their votes. “It is a pain to even enter the booths as there are are no ramps and for me, to climb the big steps is pretty difficult. Some booths are located in hilly areas, some down in the dump and some with no pathways and for the disabled, it is impossible to cast their votes. There seems to be no concern or even data available with the election authorities regarding the number of disabled voters in a particular constituency.” Sunil Jain cast his vote in the 2008 elections successfully but only because he had assistance and somebody who could lift his wheelchair and help him to enter the polling booth. But the moot question here is : how many people can afford assistance on their own? Keeping in view, the problems faced by people with disabilities, Sunil and his Astha Foundation is hoping to bring awareness and launch a campaign for the rights of the disabled so that they can take part in the election process. “It is important that this section of the population gets all the support, logistical and otherwise, so that they exercise their voting rights. Through our campaign, we are also hoping to raise awareness levels in all the eligible voters for casting their valuable votes and also provide any kind of assistance they need,” he added. While people with disabilities too have the right to cast their votes, nobody knows how much action has been taken to empower them to exercise their choice. The prevailing scenario in our country today is: These people want to vote but they are not enrolled in any electoral rolls; they are in the electoral list, but neither find any support nor encouragement (infrastructure or otherwise) to participate in the democratic process; they can go and vote, but they may think that it’s not important; and further, some people do vote irrespective of facilities or not they somehow find a way to take part in the exercise. “Astha’s aim is to make sure that the disabled community too votes. After all, even their vote counts and the state and central governments should make efforts to make the voting process, whether Parliamentary or assembly, disabled friendly,” said Sunil. He further added adds that they are planning to meet the chief electoral officer of Karnataka and the disability commissioner on the 10th of this month to seek their involvement and support so as to empower maximum number of people with disability and ultimately having the freedom to choose and exercise their right to vote. Thanks Avinash for posting this news here. I have read it before and thought of sharing in this forum. As some of the list members may be aware that after lot of advocacy we have been able to include the issues pertaining to sexual assault on disabled women in our Criminal Law Amendment 2013 - few of us took lot of pain to see that this inclusion takes place.I was hoping that by posting this news here I can ask some groups/individuals of Maharastra can follow this case up and see that police is actually implementing the changes in law. Re: [AI] Some doubts regarding Braille
Dear members, Braille is a very logical script, and one can easily learn it if taught properly. I have taught Braille to two sighted persons and both of them learned it in 16 sittings. Learning is not difficult but one has to keep practicing, otherwise one tends to forget whatever one has learned. Braille has to be taught in a step-by-step manner. once the logic behind it is properly explained, a student can grasp it quickly. Professor Shyam M. [AI] Formula correction
Dear Friends, I have created a formula for my database. It is giving partial result. I want to modify it for better output. My condition is as follows: If cell j8= h1 then the formula should minus 0.5 from date difference in cell k8. If cell j8= h2 then the formula should minus 0.5 from date difference in cell k8. If cell j8= - then the formula should remain unchanged. My formula is as follows: =(IF(H8=-,0,IF(I8=-,0,IF(H8=,0,IF(I8=,0,IF(J8=h1,DATEDIF(H8,I8,d)+1)-0.5) It’s very urgent to complete my database so please modify it for me today. Re: [AI] Some doubts regarding Braille
Taken from the Braille monitor, April 2013 Dale, Gale, and Their Braille Tale by the NFB BELL Team I am Dale and I read Braille. I am Gale. What is Braille? Braille is dots, lots and lots. Each dot has its special spot. Why read Braille? inquires Gale. I'd rather climb a mountain trail. Dale, these dots are hard to see. Large print is fine, so let me be. I do not have vision, Gale. That is why I must read Braille. Would you read Braille here or there? I could read Braille anywhere. O dear Gale, I love my Braille. Would you read it in a house? Would you read it to a mouse? I do read it in my house. I do read it to my mouse. I do read Braille here and there. I do read Braille anywhere. O dear Gale, I love my Braille. How about that silly print? Could you read it in a tent? Could you read it in the night? Could you read it without light? I could read Braille at the park! I could read Braille in the dark! I do read Braille here and there. I do read Braille anywhere. O dear Gale, I love my Braille! Would you read Braille in a box? Would you teach Braille to a fox? I could read Braille in a box. I couldn't teach Braille to a fox. Why can't you teach it to a fox? He couldn't feel it through his socks. I could teach it to a girl. Hey, look at that, there goes a squirrel. We could read it in a tree. You could read Braille, don't you see? I do read Braille here and there. I do read Braille anywhere. O dear Gale, I love my Braille! My darling Dale, I think I see. Won't you teach that Braille to me! They tried to teach me in the school. But I told them it wasn't cool. But I was wrong and don't want to fail! I think it's time I learned my Braille! We do read Braille here and there! We do read Braille anywhere! Bumps and dots are cool to read. With this Braille we will succeed! -Original Message- From: AccessIndia [mailto:accessindia-boun...@accessindia.org.in] On Behalf Of Shyam M.
