[AI] Survey on air travel experience
Dear Friends Warm greetings from Enable India. The disability sector is totally disillusioned by the inhumane incident that occurred with a few teenage boy with disability by the Indigo Airlines. It is utterly frustrating to witness such insensitive incident after all our advocacies with the DGCA as well as the individual airlines. This incident has initiated us to conduct an online survey regarding the experiences of persons with disabilities while traveling by air. We will be really appreciate if you can take out 10 minutes of your time to respond to this survey by the 31st May 2022. [AI] Looking for content creators to colaborate
Hi all, Hope you are doing fine. Most of you know that Enable India recently launched an educative tool for computer learners called 'Blimey' on the 3rd of December 2021. In order to leverage and diversify Blimey, Enable India is willing to make the tool a one-stop solution for all persons with disabilities across the globe. Apart from the computer learning tutorials that we currently have, we also want to host other useful materials related to persons with disabilities. As for now, we are looking at contents related to assistive aids, discussion on the career growth for PWDs, web accessibility, solutions adopted by individuals to overcome certain challenges, screen reader tips and tricks and many others. Keeping this goal in mind, we are working toward talking to various content creators, youtubers, podcasters and those individuals/organizations who are willing to maximise their reach to a wider audience through Blimey. Hence, to kick start this project, we need few contacts of the channel owners, youtubers, content developers, podcasters, etc., from the Kannada, Telegu and Tamil community. If any of you know such individuals/groups, contact Cornelius on +917760512962 or email at cornel...@enableindia.org Looking forward to a positive response from the community. -- Thanks, Cornelius Lyngdoh. -- Disclaimer: 1. [AI] Bookmark in chrome
Hi Initially I was able to copy text from any website using chrome. Due to some issue, I reset chrome. Now I can't copy text even though Jaws says that the text is selected. Normally, in huge text, I bookmark it first using cntrl+Win+K and then go to the last text and then select it using Ins+Space+m and then copy the text. But now, this step doesn't seem to work anymore including the normal selection using shift+down arrow. Surprisingly if I copy text using NVDA it is working. My chrome is the latest one, jaws is 18 and Win10. Hope i made myself clear. -- Thanks, Cornelius Lyngdoh. [AI] Urgent about official website
Hi Till yesterday I was able to login to my official portal but today the concerned team has introduced new interface. I am unable to use anything on the new one. I have tried with latest NVDA and both Jaws 14 (office one) and I tried from my personal laptop having Jaws 18. Issue is that once I logged in, all I hear is "graphics new clickable), etc. I tried to activate blindly whatever that I heard like clickable by enter key and space key but it was not activated. Can anyone advise me how to tell them my issue and to explain to them about it. But I can't go meet them personally since they are in Mumbai while I am working from home in bangalore. All I can do is to either call or send them an email. So I need to be clear in telling them my issue and to advise them in whatever way I can to make website accessible for me. Please help its very urgent. -- Thanks, Cornelius Lyngdoh. [AI] Braille EPIC ccard
http://www.theshillongtimes.com/2019/04/10/braille-epic-debuts-in-state/ SHILLONG: Introducing Braille EPIC in the state on Tuesday, the state Chief Electoral Officer, Frederick Kharkongor, handed over the first card to disability icon Bertha Gyndykes Dkhar at a programme in U Soso Tham auditorium here. Tuesday was the last day of campaigning for the first phase of Lok Sabha polls on April 11. On receiving the Braille EPIC from Kharkongor, a happy Dkhar said she can use the card for the Lok Sabha election on Thursday. “It was a surprise, I heard they are doing the ballot paper in Braille but when he said EPIC, I did not believe and now I can use this when I go voting on April 11,” she said. Speaking at the programme, Kharkongor said staying away from voting is not a form of protest, but a surrender of rights while pointing out that different programmes and activities were rolled out by the Election Department to motivate the youth to vote. “All these programmes that we are doing is to ensure that we engage and connect with you (the youth),” he said to an audience which mostly consisted of young people. -- Thanks, Cornelius Lyngdoh. [AI] Article
https://www.thenewsminute.com/article/first-mysuru-university-appoints-visually-challenged-person-chairman-dept-88243 The University of Mysore (UoM) has been hailed for its decision to appoint Krishna Hombal, a visually challenged person as Chairman of the Department of Political Science. This is the first time in the university's 102-year history that a visually challenged person has taken charge of a department. Speaking to The News Minute from Mysuru, the newly appointed chairman said that he has the responsibility of promoting both Political Science and supporting people with disabilities. "The University has given me an opportunity to head the department. It is a historic decision for promoting equal opportunities and inclusive participation for those who are visually challenged. We want to popularise Political Science in the University. We want to promote research and improve the social utility of the department," he said. Krishna takes over from Prof GT Ramachandrappa after his term ended. Assistant Professor Krishna Hombal, who has been visually challenged since birth, began working in the department in 1999 and his appointment as Chairman of the Political Science Department on September 7 caps a remarkable rise through the ranks of the university. He studied at the Government School for Blind Children in Hubballi from 1975 to 1982 before continuing his studies at the Government High School for Blind Children at Tilaknagar in Mysuru. He completed his BA at the Karnataka Arts College in Dharwad and his MA in Political Science at Karnatak University, Dharwad and completed his PhD from Mysuru University in 2010. In addition to his responsibilities at the University, Krishna is also the coordinator of Centre for Education of Visually Challenged, Project Drushti, under the University Grants Commission." I am an ambassador of visually challenged persons in the society and at the same time, I have to take the confidence of the society in the ability of visually challenged persons like me. We want to build a full-fledged centre to train visually challenged persons under this project," he said. The University’s decision to promote Krishna has received praise and he hopes that it will lead to more such appointments in other universities. “Inclusiveness should not just be restricted to legislation. We should encourage professionals to trust in the capabilities of persons with challenges like myself,” he said. block quote For the first time in its 102-year history, the Mysuru University has appointed a visually challenged assistant professor, Dr Krishna R. Hombal as the head of the political science department. [AI] AAI recruits only low vision persons?
Hi For past one year I have been following few job advertisements by airport authority of India. I have observed that it gives advertisements only for people with low vision. Is it true or what? I was even clearly told not to attend my 2nd round exam that was held on last May due to my 100% visual impairment. When I saw the advertisement for junior assistant in Guahati last time I applied even though it is clearly mentioned that post is for low vision people. With lots of persuasion, I managed to attend my first round of online test and cleared it too. But when the call letter came for the 2nd round, I inquired from the manager of that branch through mail stating that I am 100% blind and subsequently send my disability certificate. Hence the reply came that I won't be allowed to appear for the 2nd round due to my 100% blindness. -- --- Thanks, Cornelius Lyngdoh. [AI] SBI insists on bringing witness for cash withdrawal
Hi Is it fair that SBI keeps on insisting that my friend should take along with him a sighted partner for cash withdraw using passbook? Or is there anything that I can tell him to tell SBI to allow him withdraw his money without sighted partner? Anyways he does not have one, so he is unable to withdraw it even if it is urgent for him. And he does not have ATM card nor cheque too and he is not in his home branch right now. Re: [AI] Scribe guidelines
Hi Depending on institution to provide a scribe is good. But what if that institution send an unqualified one? What action can be done against it? I had a very bad experience in this matter with UPSC exam. When I wrote for my first attempt I opted for UPSC scribe thinking that I will get a good one. Unfortunate for me, I got a girl who did not even know how to pronounce english words and I have to ask for spellings almost the whole of exam period. What can we do in such cases except to feel dejected without my fault for it? Re: [AI] merge 2 PDFs and instantly convert to JPEG
Hi all, Am done with at least merging both of my PDFs using online tools. But When I tried to convert this merged file to JPEG format using online tools / ABBYY FineReader, the result was not satisfactory. Issue: I wanted the output to be in a single JPEG format, but both the tools I used as mentioned above gave me as 2 separate files altogether or in Zip format; which is of no use to me. I needed to upload the JPEG file in an online portal which does not have the option of uploading more than one file for the same option, hence I merged both the PDFs into a single file. @Mukesh Baviskar I searched for the photo shop software but could not find the free one. Hence if possible, please send me a link to a free software so that I can complete the required task. Thanks all. Re: [AI] Accessibility issue in rediffmail.com new interface
Hi @vedika, Basic HTML is obviously the solution which I used it earlier. But my issue is not with this one. I don't know whether in your rediffmail.com page, you have seen a link above the search edit box, which says "take me to the new rediffmail" or not. Once you click on this, the user interface completely changes and this is the page I am talking about. I have been trying to come back to the previous version but could not find the option. Please if you don't mind, have a look on that page and maybe suggest me if you have any solution or maybe have a discussion on how can I approach the web designing team in my company. [AI] Accessibility issue in rediffmail.com new interface
Hi all, I am a rediffmail user since 2012 and I found it so convenient as equal to that of Gmail.com interface. Lately, I moved to the newer interface and very unfortunate for me to find out that it is not at all accessible for screen readers. I tried with both NVDA latest version and with JAWS14 (as this is the version installed in my office PC). I wanted to reset it to the older one but the option is nowhere to be found. Now, being an employee in rediff.com itself, I am planning to take this issue to the web designing team and explaining to them the necessity to include the accessibility features as per the WCAG 2.0 norms. My issue is that I don't know how to start and I doubt whether they will adhere to the guideline as prescribed because presumably there are very less visually impaired rediffmail.com users. Can someone from the accessibility background help me in this regard. -- Believe in WORK not in LUCK! & Most of all, trust in God but don't be dependent on Him. --- Thanks, Cornelius Lyngdoh. Re: [AI] Query about creating a filter in Gmail.
Hi Kiran, Let me tell you from the beginning of the process. Please bear with me and try to notice where are the mismatches from the steps below and yours. And do the needful. Steps: 1. Create a label from the edit label link (in this case you may create webaim as the name) 2. Now go to the link create filter. 3. here you will be presented with few important criteria like from, to, subject, etc., which I think you are familiar with all of these. 4. To save your time, just go straight to the edit box which says "has the words" and type in "webaim" without quotes. Note that it is not necessary to specify all the criteria in the boxes given. 5. After typing the above, hit the next button at the bottom most 6. In this step, you have to give more specifications to the GMail service provider as to what it will do if any mail containing the word "webaim" will arrive to your inbox 7. check the checkbox which says "skip inbox" if in case you don't need a copy of the mail in your inbox but only in the folder you want it to land. 8. leave the checkbox by the label "star it" as it is because it is not important. 9. now check the checkbox "apply the label" 10. From the drop down list below, choose "webaim" or any name you gave in the first step above. 11. Leave the "forward to" checkbox unless you want all the mails from webaim to be forwarded to other mail IDs. This will need few more steps to be done. 12. Do not check the checkbox below with the label "delete it". Leave it as unchecked because if you check it, your mail will move to thrash. 13. If you want the previous mails from your inbox to start moving to the "webaim" folder, you have to check the checkbox "also apply to conversations" 14. After all these, hit the "create filter" button. You are good to go now. Please let me know if it does not work. Re: [AI] Disabled plea for rule tweak
Hi I disagree to these petitioners specifically on the clause as mentioned in this notification: "The equivalent value of specified notes tendered may be credited to third party account, provided specific authorisation thereof accorded by the third party is presented to the bank, following standard banking procedure and on production of valid proof of identity of the person actually tendering." I don't understand why such persons with disabilities, being a disabled myself, should appoint third parties who they can't trust at all. This is similar to the argument normally uttered by banks when visually impaired persons go to apply for ATM cards. They will always say that how can you operate ATM card; people will misuse your card, etc. Now, my issue is why should a visually impaired blindly take an unknown person from the street and ask for help in operating an ATM card? This argument will also apply to the misunderstanding of the clause above by these petitioners. I dont know whether I am being partial here but I think these petitioners will surely have someone who they can trust who will return their creditted money. Re: [AI] Any accessibility features in new Rs. 500 and Rs. 2000 currency notes?
Hi Has anyone amongst this group touched the new 2000 note? Yesterday I got to feel it and I do not get what special features it has relating to visually impaired persons as stated by RBI. Of course I noticed that the length is more and the breadth is little short as compared to the previous note. So, can someone in this list help me read a 2000 note. I am eager to know. And why only special features in 2000 and not in 500 note? On 11/9/16, rajendra dhurve <rd0...@gmail.com> wrote: > What about Rs500 noat? Re: [AI] Key stroke to copy multiple files or folders from different location at a time
Hi Amiyo Thanks for the response. I have asked from many people about this feature from some of my friends and they all told that they too don't know whether windows has such in built features. I started to do some online search and I found this solution through copywhiz software. Though I have not tried it myself, but I thought I will paste this link here if anyone in the list might want to give it a try. www.conceptworld.com/Copywhiz/Pick-And-Copy-Files-From-Multiple-Folders I would like to request anyone who is going to try it to let me know is it working fine or not. [AI] Key stroke to copy multiple files or folders from different location at a time
Hi all, Is there any key stroke to copy multiple files or folders at a time using JAWS or NVDA? Let me simplify my requirement: Say for example, I need to copy 3 subfolders from one particular main folder and 5 sub folders from another main folder, so on and so forth. Or if not subfolders, just imagine I need to copy many files similar to the example I gave above. If from one folder at a time, then I know how to do it but it takes so much time if I have to do it for more than 30 subfolders which are kept not in the same folder but in different locations. Hope you got what I meant. -- Believe in WORK not in LUCK! & Most of all, trust in God but don't be dependent on Him. --- Thanks, Cornelius Lyngdoh. [AI] Chess board and Plot4 for the blind
Hi all, Can someone advise me from where, how and the cost of the below requirements. 1. A chess board of international standard which has braille embossed on the rows and columns. One of my friend has seen it somewhere but does not know how to get it. Note that I do not need the wooden boards as I already have it. 2. In my childhood days in school, I use to play a game called Plot4. Ever since that board damaged, I cannot find it from anywhere else and no one seems to know about it. Note that I got and learnt that Plot4 from one of my teachers, who I lost contact with. Description of Plot4: This game has 42 round holes in total. There are 7 vertical lines containing 6 round holes in each. We need 2 people to play in this game. In order to play, we have to insert round dashes from the top of the vertical lines. These round dashes consist of a. With a hole in the middle b. Without hole in the middle. In order to defeat the opponent, one has to be able to keep his dashes continuously either vertically or horizontally or diagonally in four holes. This game is very interesting. I think besides chess, drafts, etc., visually impaired persons should also learn this game. We have to use our mind a lot similar to chess, etc. -- Believe in WORK not in LUCK! & Most of all, trust in God but don't be dependent on Him. --- Thanks, Cornelius Lyngdoh. Re: [AI] Request for Vote
Is this number for voting? 02261805716 Let me know. I recieved a call yesterday evening from a gentleman who told me to vote in this number by giving missed call. So I have tried 3 times but it says that the number does not exist. so I thought may be I got the wrong number! On 10/8/12, mukesh jain mukesh.jai...@gmail.com wrote: hello, the aim behind this competition is certainly noble and deserves more and more success as there is stringent need to have many braile transcription centres across the country because considering the imerging era of etext technology, many people tend to loose the touch with braille script apart from beeing strictly implemented in the primary or special schools only wich is taking place in most of the cases though not everywhere. i would certainly wish to be the part of this competition and vote but i afraid of voting through any method of using mobile varification or only adopting the way of mobile participation because my experience has yielded many times bad results such as, too many advertisements, etc even these mobile numbers obtained from such competitions has been acquired by many comercial companies to market their products. i don't at all say that this might happen with this competition just afraid to be part of the event wich only restricts the voting through mobile. i could also not understand that braille transcription is rarely available outside and people charge hefty for the same as i know couple of organisations who charge just a rupee or so for per page in addition to the nominal charges towards binding the transcription work. of course, i am of the strong opinion that more and more braille transcription units be set up to strengthen the desire of reading the matterial in braille by print impaired persons but just could not understand the intention clearly hence, expressed my views. i do not meant to hurt anyone by expressing my opinion rather i give my best wishes for this noble project. please let me know if this voting is open by online mode or landline or any other form except the mobile varification. i would certainly be part of it. thanks, mukesh.
