Re: [AI] Accessibility events or fests in colleges

2023-08-21 Thread Saurav Hegde
Hello sir,
Thanks for reaching out, I would like this event to be held in my college.
As mentioned above, it is Brihan Maharashtra College of Commerce (BMCC) Pune
I also have another suggestion, along orientations, there should be a
lecture by a blind person who is very accomplished in a field or stream
taught in that college.
For example, my college is a commerce college, so a blind person who has
passed out from a top IIM or is a CA would be a great fit.
This will also enable normal students to get career guidance as well.
Also, could you give an idea about the technologies that will be
demonstrated.

Regards,
Saurav

Re: [AI] Accessibility events or fests in colleges

2023-08-21 Thread Dhananjay Bhole
Dear All,
Greetings to you!

Centre for Disability Studies and Inclusive Education At School of
Education, Savitribai Phule Pune University is sensitizing academic
institutions about inclusive education best practices and academic
accessibility for persons with disabilities under Accessibility
outreach and sensitization program. So far we have conducted over 250+
Sensitization programs in colleges and Universities of Maharashtra,
Goa and Gujarat.

People with disabilities in India are often left out of mainstream
education due to a variety of reasons, primarily the lack of awareness
amongst educational institutions and academician, limited
infrastructural resources and lack of training in this regard. It is
believed that barely two percent of the 70 million persons with
disabilities have access to education in India. Higher education is
not within the reach of every persons with disabilities.

To bridge the gap, Centre for Disability Studies and Inclusive
Education , Savitribai Phule Pune university is organizing talks on
“Inclusive
education and Academic Accessibility”. to Sensitize higher education
institutions for creating awareness among the functionaries of higher
education about the specific educational needs of individuals with
disabilities for achieving their academic independence and their
inclusion in normal academic set up.

The 2 hour duration talk covers:
inclusive education Concepts, types of disabilities and specific
assistive technologies required to them, Demonstration of assistive
technologies, Challenges of persons with disabilities in academic,
role of stakeholders in creation of barrier free academics, accessible
academic web services, Accessible built infrastructure, Accessible
Course content, accessible teaching and course delivery mechanism,
Accessible Admission and enrolment, Accessible examination
requirements, Reservation policies for persons with disabilities,
Disability support services activities at the campus, students
counselling, Placement for persons with disabilities, cases
discussion, Inclusive Education and accessibility Research etc.

Who can participate: Faculties, social scientists, Social
entrepreneurs, academic administrators, research fellows, disability
support service coordinators, students with disabilities etc
Pilot faculties: Mr. Dhananjay Bhole
(Accessibility and assistive technology evangelist)and assistant
Professor and coordinator, Centre for Disability Studies and
Inclusive Education, SPPU .

Pilot faculty will carry all the assistive technologies required for
demonstration.

Do let me know if you wish to arrange such talk in your organization
and support for creation of barrier free and inclusive academics.

Regards

Hello, it is true that most of our problems arise more due to the lack of
awairness on the part of the sighted persons than our disability. Those of us,
who are well-placed in society have to take an initiative in creating and
promoting this awairness. In my college I had aranged one such event and had
invited Mr. Suhas Karnik to speak on this issue. I myself have delivered
several lectures in schools and colleges not only almost all over Maharashtra
but also in Goa and Karnataka. While doing so, our approach should be that of
orienting and explaining people rather than of blaming or criticizing them. We
must actively participate in different public activities and functions. I have
done very little work in institutes working for the blind. But for the last 45
years I have worked as an advocate of the blind.

it is a very good suggestion indeed.

I have studied in an inclusive college and teach in a private college now.
I had to go through a lot of struggles especially while convincing the
management to take me as a faculty as they were unaware of the disability and
were doubtful.
the question is not whether they understand the whole content of the lectures
but, it would give an exposure to the participants to the realm of disability.

It is a great initiative, I feel.
On that, I got an idea, such kind of events should be held in as many
colleges as possible.
There should be organisations that go and demonstrate assistive
technologies and give lectures on problems faced by the disabled and available
solutions.
For example, I study at Brihan Maharashtra College of Commerce, Pune.
People there are quite helpful, they will assist you if you ask and even
approach you themselves, if they see you struggling in anyway.
However, no one exactly knows about assistive technologies much and how
blind people exactly function.
Most know only few things, the blind cane, braille (maybe some) and have
weird myths like blind people have some super cense.
A pessimistic thought could be that, sited are not interested in all of
this, but I believe that some will be, only they don't know much about all of
this.
I had to make an audio clip explaining how does a screen reader work and
share on my whatsap group because people weren't understanding, how am I using
a phone.
I know the mail has gotten a bit long, but I felt a need to put out this
suggestion.
If blind and sited collaborate somehow, it could bring out even better
results.
