I have lots of scheduled backups of database via TDP for SQL (v2.2) and TDP for Oracle
(v2.2.0.2).

There are quite a few options you can look into. CNT builds protocol
converters that you can use to convert FCP - IP - FCP (fiber channel
protocol) and accomplish data mirroring via a WAN connection. Other DWDM /
Dark Fiber options exist too, and can play well with the larger disk
subsystem's

NTBackup utility to back them directly to tape. No archives or long term
retention. This not only cut down the time required to run backups, but also
reduced the time required to backup our primary pools to copy pools,

It's highly recommended that (on Solaris) you use raw volumes for the TSM
file systems (ie, db log)... due to severe performance penalties. Other
than that, all should be okay. There are other rules of thumb to consider,
