Moving database to another storage controller

2018-03-12 Thread Bill Boyer
I have a small-ish TSM 8.1.2 with a single db volume. 250GB with only 99GB
used. It's on a V7000 that's being returned off lease. I have another V7000
to use. Is it possible to:

1. Allocate another 250GB drive on the new V7000
2. Stop TSM and make sure DB2 instance stops
3. Copy the entire contents of the DBVOL to the new V7000
4. Change the disk volumes so that the new V7000 is the same drive
letter.
5. Bring up TSM.

I can move the active log and archive log easily enough but I would really
like to move the DB without having to od the whole removed and restore db.

I had also though about using Windows mirrored volumes.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

TIA,

Bill

Using TDP to backup NDF files

Is there a way to backup NDF files as part of the database backup? I have a

doesn't get included as part of the TDPSQLC BACKUP * FULL command. How can I
get that included in the SQL backup of the server? Or do I need to use the
BAClient for that?

You're welcome Bill.

And yes, you need to bring down TSM for an offline reorg, they are very fast
however, especially if you run them on SSD's as a target location for the reorg
and you do it one table at a time so you can stop after 2 if you are running
out of time for instance and do the others in another window.

I've seen massive performance enhancements after an offline reorg.

I would recommend using the analyze_db2_formulas.pl script, the output is very
usefull and looks like this:

tsminst1@hostname:~/20170420-0818> cat summary.out BEGIN SUMMARY
"db2 alter tablespace BFABFIDXSPACE reduce max" will return = 28.2G to the
operating system file system
"db2 alter tablespace BFBFEXTIDXSPACE reduce max" will return = 31.5G to the
operating system file system
BF_BITFILE_EXTENTS needs to be reorganized. estimated savings Table5
GB, Index2 GB
BF_QUEUED_CHUNKS needs to be reorganized. estimated savings Table1 GB,
Index 163 GB
Total estimated savings 171 GB
END SUMMARY
tsminst1@hostname:~/20170420-0818>

You can see what tablespaces need a reorg and what need a reduce max. The
reduce max estimates can be a bit to optimistic but still, never good
indication or where your attention should be.

Good luck

  Stefan

Hi Bill,

I don't know what is going on the the protect stgpool command vs replicate node
in regards to DB usage but the conversion growth...i've been there a few times
before, it happens with every conversion because the directory containerpool
stores it's metadata differently than the filepool.
It's more efficient in the end but during the conversion you need extra space
on the database filesystems.

You can however reclaim that space, I use offline reorgs and reduce max
commands on the tablespaces that hold the old filepool metadata.

http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21683633

Every conversion I have done has ended up with at least 30% less database space
used but not on it's own, they all need some help.
You can run those reorgs and reduce max commands half way during the conversion
without problems if you are running out of space. Well, at least that has been
my experience.

If you are having issues with this I suggest you contact IBM support, they can
determine what tables to reorg and reduce max to get the maximum amount of
space (and performance) back.

I would also check out this page :
http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg1IT15619
I would advise you to run those selects on the database (might take a day to
complete), we have a few cases of orphaned chunks that according to us MIGHT to
be related (IBM is investigating) to the use of the protect stgpool command, if
you have them I would also suggest asking IBM for support.

TSM7.1.7 DB growing with Dedup

2017-04-12 Thread Bill Boyer
I converted a server over to directory container polls and replication.
Their previous FILE stgpool was around 140TB of data. After defining
everything I used the TSMOC dialogs to enable replication and then started
running the CONVERT STGPOOL command. At the start of this I had 430GB of
available DBSPACE. I was only running the PROTECT schedules. The REPLICATE
schedule was marked inactive until the convert completed. I stopped the
convert when I got down to only 70GB of DBspace left and around 40TB to
convert. Since then the DB has been shrinking about 2-4GB per day. We're
ordering more SSD drives so we can increase the DBSPACE but I may run out of
space before then.

Is the fact that all nodes are set for replication holding on to some DB and
DIR pool space? And my target container pool seems to be a lot different
used% even though my PROTECT processes are running to completion.

I'm thinking if I remove replication from all the nodes until I'm done with
the conversion it should help? Then change each node back for replication
and start the schedule.

TSM Server Replication

Is there a good rebood or whitepaper on TSM server replication? I have a
customer that wants to set this up after upgrading to V7.1.7 for directory

have it replicate both ways. They have servers in the 2nd location that the
currently back up over the network to the primary and want to change them to
back up to the local and replicate to the main TSM server.

Can a directory storage pool be a source and target for protection?

Servers in location A back up to TSM Server A and replicate to TSM Server
location B and visa versa.

I think a statement like

domain ALL-LOCAL \\server1\share1

will get the share backed up, if the account used to run backups has the
necessary permissions. The client scheduler service is typically run under
the system account, which typically does not have access to resources owned
by other systems.

You're probably right. I checked and the server has IBM Install Manager
1.6.2 already on it. The other one doesn't have any IBM Install Manager and
that's the one that lists everything. I'll schedule a time with the customer
to at least run through the install of the 1.7.2 version in the V7.1.1 TSM

Must have gotten installed when I did the TSM/OC for the V6.3.4 release.
That one's the hub server. No TSM/OC on the other server.

Re: TSM BA installer rant

Double-click on the client installer .EXE and if the install says it needs to
install the VC++ libraries or any other pre-req's, cancel out f the client
install. Then go to the C:\tsm_images\TSM_BA_Client\ISSetupPrerequisites
directory. There are directories for each of the pre-req's. Run them manually
and if a reboot is required, you can say no and reboot at your leisure. Then
come back and run the setup.exe and continue the TSM client install.

As for client upgrades I've found that if you make sure to stop any of the TSM
client services that running (JBB, CAD,Scheduler,...) before running the
install I don't get asked for a reboot.

As many has experienced the 7.1 BA client for Windows not only requires a
reboot, it will in the middle of the install reboot right into your face
without any warning or prompt. On top of this it will do so despite you telling
it not to. The same goes for the TDP SQL client btw.

Cause is some C++ Windows things that must be installed for the GUI to work.

For the BA client there is a warning in the Info Center on this. For the TDP it
is not so clear, that crucial information is hidden in a technote.
IBM therefore thinks they are not to blame but in practise a lot of users fall
in that trap and breach their SLAs all over the place. With a GUI one has
certain expectations on how it should behave and if no unprompted reboot
happened in earlier versions why should it happen now?

My opinion on this:

   1. IBM should set as a design principle that no customer server should
ever need a reboot when installing, upgrading or removing TSM software.
   2. There should be no exceptions, but if there are at least make the
installer prompt a warning so that the user can delay the reboot until
   service hours.
   3. Software versions that will reboot a server without warning should be
immediately removed from PA and other repositories until they are fixed.

Hi

First check compatibility with IBM and EMC.

Ron has mentioned a solution that applies to NetApp that may not apply to EMC
isilon eg. isilon does not have a vfiler concept.

I found that the restrictions of NDMP did not warrant the effort to use it on
something like an isilon cluster.
The benefit of isilon is the size you can grow them to and the bandwidth you
have to storage with multiple nodes.

Using NDMP negates all of this and reduces the functionality.
- you are limited to the bandwidth a single host(TSM server) and single isilon
node can service.
- There is no incremental only differential. There is no snapdiff type
functionality that NetApps have
- you can't use NDMP to back up part of it.
- The time it would take to do a full backup.
- The time it would take to do a restore.

One other niggle is that you need a windows machine to do a graphical restore
(Web/Java UI).

That said if your data is small then these probably don't matter so much.

 have more options

This configuration will allow you backup up to TSM storage pools

the backup and restores using the BACKUP NODE and RESTORE NODE

 Ricky,

The Isilon uses the OneFS file system and TSM views it as one huge
file system. If backing up to disk, TSM will attempt to preallocate
enough space to back up the entire allocated space on the Isilon.
Defining Virtual File systems will not help because directory quota
information is not passed to TSM, and TSM only sees the total allocated
 space.

We were able to back up the Isilon to disk when we started on a test
system with little data on it, around 25 GB. When we attempted to
implement the same backups on a second, well-populated Isilon we ran
 into the space allocation problem.

When backing up to tape, TSM assumes you have unlimited storage
available and is able to run VFS backups. We use Virtual File Space
Mapping (VFS) and back up to tape.

Refer to EMC SR#4646, TSM PMR 23808,122,000.

Re: V5-V6 conversion failed on INSERTDB with File system full

2014-04-09 Thread Bill Boyer
The first go around failed after about 5-hours with DB2 space shortage. The
V5 has a 260GB DB so I created 4x100GB TSM db file systems. When I got the
failure messages about file system full 2 of them were 100% and the other 2
were at 87%. So we create a 5th and had 500GB of database space. Then it ran
for 12.5 hours and failed with some record conversion error. Opened a PMR
and we got hit with APAR IC97407. Any volumes that are EMPTY or have a
%Utilized of 0 need to be deleted in the V5 server before you start. Or
upgrade to 6.3.4.300. Customer's not comfortable running it on a patch
level, so right now we're preparing for the 3rd attempt and making sure any
EMPTY volumes are deleted and any volumes with PCT_UTILIZED=0 and no content
are removed. This includes all the DISK volumes for the storage pools.
Interesting you can have a volume with PCT_UTILIZED=0 and it still have
content (Q CONTENT returns files). Apparently the rounding routing to
compute the used % doesn't round beyond the 0.0. Migrating off the DIRMC
storage pool had that volume showng %Utilized=0, but there are 100,000's of
file in it. As long as it has content, the volume is OK.

I'm really surprised at how fast this migration/conversion went last time.
Only 2:10 hrs for the extractdb phase. And they have 260GB at 90%.

As far as the AIX to Linux, seems to be just fine.

Ask me tomorrow how this 3rd attempt goes.

Well, at base level 6.3.0 it was verboten, so that's probably what the tech
is referring to:

Restriction: You cannot upgrade your server to run on an operating system
that is different from the operating system it currently runs on. For
example, you cannot upgrade a server running on an AIX system to a server
running on a Linux system.

But in 6.3.4 the upgrade guide lists Chap 12 as a specific case where you
can go from 5.5 on AIX to 6.3.4 on Linux.
I haven't dug into it to see how the Chap 12 procedure is different from the
standard ones.
Let us know how it comes out - inquiring minds want to know!

Part 2. Migrating Tivoli Storage Manager V5 servers on AIX, HP-UX, or
Solaris systems to V6.3.4 on Linux A Tivoli Storage Manager V5 server that
runs on an AIX, HP-UX, or Solaris operating system can be migrated to V6.3.4
or later on a Linux x86_64 operating system.

Added another 1TB file system to the database on the V6 server. Still
failed, but for a different reason. Turns out I should have been at
6.3.4.300. The 6.3.4.0 insertdb code has a problem with volumes that are
EMPTY, volumes with 0% utilization and Q CONTENT shows nothing. APAR
IC97407: http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg1IC97407

I couldn't believe I needed 500GB for the conversion. Now that it's done, my
(5) db filespaces are showing 3 at 36% and 2 at 74%. Why they aren't more
even distributed...? Now the customer needs to decide if they want to
upgrade to 6.3.4.300 and do the upgrade again, or attempt the 'local fix' of
making sure to delete all empty and 0% used volumes. DISK, FILE or tape. And
if I miss one...another 12-hours down the drain.

Interesting... after I opened the PMR on the 2nd failure, the tech who
called back said he was pretty sure I couldn't do this from AIX to Linux.

2014-04-03 Thread Bill Boyer

V5 to V6 upgrade using media

Anyone done a migration using tape media in a library? I have a customer on
AIX using ab IBM 3584 library with LTO5 drives. This library is fibre
attached and also zoned to the new Linux V6 server. I would like to use the
media method and not the network with this hardware. Is that possible?
Anyone done it? Gotcha's? How does the extractdb know what is a scratch tape
in the library inventory?

Re: Informal Poll: General question about use of policysets

2014-01-31 Thread Bill Boyer
Only come across a need once in 16-years of working with *SM. This customer
wanted to do periodic full backups. So I had a policy set with set to the
default MODE=MODIFIED and another set to MODE=ABSOLUTE. They would activate
the full policy set when they wanted to do the complete refresh. And then
re-active the incremental policy set. I explained all the downsides to this,
but the manager said he had experience with TSM and wanted the full so that
all the data for the servers would be somewhat collocated again on the tapes
without having to do collocation.

That was the only time or reason I saw for multiple policy sets in a domain.

The TSM books show that you can have multiple policysets per domain.
I don't mean just the active vs inactive, but you can have multiple
policysets like NORMAL, OFFHOUR, WEEKEND, within one domain, and switch them
back and forth.

I've never done that, or had a reason to. Seems inordinately confusing to
me.
All my customers just have one policyset per domain, with the active and
inactive copy.

The inactive is the one you update, then you validate it and activate it.

Can I get some feedback on what other people do?

Do you have just one unique policyset per domain? Or what is your use case
for having multiples?

Thank you!!!

TSM/VE and SRM Replication

2014-01-23 Thread Bill Boyer
Has anyone using TSM/VE backups as well as VMware SRM for replication had
any conflicts with snapshots between the 2 products? We've had several
instances where VM's have issued an alert about Virtual Machine
consolidation needed. And just last night we had one of our file server VM's
have snapshots with invalid parents and the VM was totally unresponsive.
These events seem to occur when the TSM/VE backup completes and the snapshot
is deleted. We are at VMware 5.5.

Massive Restore

2014-01-21 Thread Bill Boyer
Windows 2012 server with TSM V6.4.1 client installed. TSM Server is V6.3.3

The server is for archived stuff. It is rather large. 10TB of data and
probably close to millions of objects. They have it backed up from a while
ago and recently some files/directories were deleted. So now they want to
do a restore with REPLACE=NO to get those files back. A backup hasn't been
done so the deleted files weren't expired. The one top level directory they
want to run this against has more than 7.5 million objects.

Is this going to be too much for the client to handle on a single restore
request? The next level down in that directory has dozens of sub directories
and to do the restores at that level would be a real pain.

Any opinions? Any special options you think I should consider using? I know
the initial file determination will take a long time. The admin doesn't
really care how long it runs.. they just want to recovery as much as they
can.

Re: TDP Exchange 2010 scheduled backups fail rc=1819

Just on a whim today I had one of the other admins logon to the server and
remove the TSM services, re-add them and change the logon-as for the TSM
Scheduler service. And now it's working.

The first time I logged on as the user that the backup was going to logon as
and added the services. Don't know what the Windows difference was in adding
the services by another user from the one configured for backups. But now
it's working.

That was the only thing I could think of that was different from my other
TDP Exchange setups on our servers. I did the TSM install/configuration as
my userid (domain admin) and configured the service with the special
userid with the appropriate Exchange rights.

If you aren't making any progress, you should open a PMR.
If the support team gets a trace, they can tell you what is failing.
If you know how and you want to do a little experimenting yourself, you can
turn on tracing for the DP/Exchange client and the DSMAGENT.

Re: ANR8386W Slot 16 of library TSMLIBR is inaccessible.

I've seen this in libraries that are able to be partitioned... like a TS3310
library. By default you always get the system partition and when you add
tapes to the I/O door the library will scan the slots and then put up a
prompt on the front panel asking which logical library you want the tapes to
be assigned to. If you don't reply, they hang around in limbo and you get
this error trying to checkin. You can turn off the insert notification
prompt if you only have 1 logical library.

Moving a TSM V6 database

2013-01-09 Thread Bill Boyer
With V5 I was able to move TSM from one computer to another if the
database/log files were on attached storage (SAN) as long as I mounted them
to the same path that is in the DSMSERV.DSK file.

Now with TSM V6 and DB2, if all by db/log/archlog/. files are on attachned
SAN LUN's, is it possible to install TSM on a new server, recreate the
instance pointing to the same db/log/archlog paths and then re-attach the
LUN's? Will the instance come up? Trying to do this without having to
allocate additional space (short supply!) and doing a restore.

What happened here is that somehow most of the / root directory on the Linux
TSM server got deleted, as well as the home/tsminst1 directory. The
DB/LOG/ARCHLOG are all on attached Netapp LUN's and weren't affected. I was
hoping that I could just reinstall TSM, recreate the instance pointing to
the same locations and then map the storage.. Would the instance (and DB2)
come up? This way they customer wouldn't have to restore from the last
DBBackup and potentially lose data.

You could start by getting a list of nodes that are set to either

Fellow TSM Admins,

We are in the process of bringing VTLs into our TSM Environment. In order
to take full advantage of deduplication features on the VTL we need to go
after the clients that are performing client based encryption and
compression. With that in mind, does anyone know an easy way to tell which
clients are using these features?

Restore VM problems at D/R

2012-09-12 Thread Bill Boyer
I'm able to restore some, but most of them. especially from the same
datacenter fail with a very specific error message:

A specified parameter was not correct

Windows 2008 R2 server with the TSM 6.3 client loaded trying to restore VM's
at a hot site. I just batch tried 39 different VM's and they all failed with
this error.

VMware vStorage API error.

TSM Function visdkWaitForTask

TSM File vmvisdk.cpp (3785)

API return code 60

API error message A specified parameter was not correct

And vCenter doesn't tell me any more than that, either!!

Anyone seen this error or figured out a way to guess what vCenter doesn't

Nope. It was backed up with 6.3 and attempting to restore with 6.3. even
went so far as try the latest 6.3.0.16 patch. Plus the error isn't that
specific. The error returned by the VADP api is A specified parameter is
not correct. It would be nice if it actually said WHAT parameter was
incorrect.

Hi, Bill.

I used to keep a file of message regular expressions I didn't want to see.
Then I would:
dsmadmc -console -id=me -pa=secret | grep -uivf file You could even alias it
you don't have to type it all the time.
alias startconsole='/usr/bin/dsmadmc -console -id=me -pa=secret | grep -uivf
file'

file would be something like:
anr0422w
issued command: query
ane4005e

You could add:
ANR1226I.*was repeated [1-5] times
or simply
ANR[0-9][0-9][0-9][0-9]I
to cut out all ANRI messages.

The end result is the console messages with various messages grepped out
- things like client session start/end, successful mounted, successful
dismounted, whatever I didn't want to see in realtime. This same trick might
help you out.

Note: The issued command: query was a cute one. It allowed me to see
what the other admins were doing when they did defines/updates, but
protected me from seeing all their queries. I found it very handy.

TSM monitor/reporting and moving the database

Default is the WAREHOUS database is on the install C: drive and according to

like to move the database to its own drive so I don't require the large boot
drive.

I found technote http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21418908
which gives steps to move/migrate the database. The first step mentions 3
files that are installed and if not, you can't do the move/migration. Those
files are:

KHDENV_MIG

khdmig.jar

migratewarehouse.bat

And are in the C:\IBM\itm\TMAITM6 directory.or should be. My installation
doesn't have these files. Without them you can't do the migrate.

Any idea how I can get these installed?

Re: TDP schedule with CAD

The TDP's are all run as an ACTION=COMMAND schedule to run the agent
program. Like SQLFULL.CMD or EXCFULL.CMD that come as the .SMP files you
customize. I normally use the same CAD for all scheduling for a node. That
way I don't need to worry about the incremental backup running at the same
time the TDP is trying to run Also makes the client configuration
simpler.

Re: Backup data access issue w/recovered DR server

By default, the target of the DDR replication is read-only. You can either
mark all you volumes in TSM read-only or you could create a snapshot of the
target and use that for TSM. You can always break the replication in a true

System details:

TSM Server 5.5..5.2, two replicating Data Domain DD880's.

Backup data and TSM DB's are replicated from production data center to DR
site.

Cold stand-by TSM servers are recovered using replicated DB backups.

Issue:

During disaster recovery restore testing client files fail to restore due to
a mount failed/access denied issue on the virtual volume (file device).

ANRD Thread44 issued message from:

ANR8501E System return code 6 received opening volume

\\192.168.135.4\BACKUP\TSM\F4\000186dd.bfs with LastError(5): Access is

denied.

I have noticed that it only appears to be an issue with accessing volumes
that are in a state of filling.

The restore mounts other full and DB volumes with no problems.

The TSM servers in production and DR use a local admin account (windows) to
run the TSM Server service, and the account is duplicated on the DD880's
with admin rights.

Re: More tsm encryption questions

2012-03-23 Thread Bill Boyer
Depends on your goal for encryption. If you need it for encrypting during
transport ( or maybe use SSL ), encrypted data at rest on your storage, data
is encrypted on the tapes going offsite,... Yeah the key is in the TSM DB,
but your need to restore/rebuild TSM to be able to get it. Just dumping out
the tape isn't going to get you any eye-readable material. Don't know if the
auditors or lawyers would accept it, but it's better than nothing. I've
referred to it in the past as the cheap managers' encryption scheme. If you
really need to lock it down, then hardware encryption is the way to go with
an external key manager, but that co$t$, is vender specific as you need TKLM
if you use IBM hardware and you can't mix it if you go to a recovery site.

So it depends on what you're trying to accomplish and the budget you have.

They restored because the client had an encryption key, delete that,

As for testing to see if they ARE encrypted, i think the client may

One aside, if you are using tape technology that compresses, the

Exchange backups slow to start sending data

2012-03-21 Thread Bill Boyer
Exchange 2007. The server crashed a couple weeks ago and is now rebuilt and
restored. But since then when the full backups of the databases runs, we see
the ACN3500 full backup is starting, but then it's a long wait before you
see any data. The session on the TSm server show IdleWait. For example just
this morning a full backup of a 33GB database took almost 2-hours. And it
isn't the actual data transmission. Backup of the next database is now in
IdleWait for 51-minutes with no data transferred

TSM server is 5.5 on Linux.

Can anybody give us an idea of where/what is causing this excessive wait
time?

Windsows 2008 failover cluster, SQL Server and TSM

Windows 2008 R2 failover cluster with SQL as a resource. All the cluster
disks are owned by the SQL resource. I need to install a client scheduler

will just be doing backups of the cluster drives and adding the generic
resource you add the cluster drives so it all fails over together.

I need to make it so that the generic service is part of the SQL resource
and gets failed over with that. Anyone out there done this type of
configuration? I have the generic service installed and the TDP SQL backups
run fine, but last night the SQL resource failed over and my service didn't.
Have failed SQL backups this morning.

If I try to add a generic service to the SQL resource, it doesn't appear to
give me the option to replicate registry keys.

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Using Datadomain for replication

2011-12-12 Thread Bill Boyer
That's fine, but it will fail even though you point the host entry to the DR
box. This is CIFS and the \\hostname\backup has to match the one of the DDR
you're pointing to. By default on the DDR the hostname is the CIFS NBT name
used. You can change the CIFS NBT name to something different (CIFS SET
nb-hostname nb-hostname) ...like the original servername in the devclass
without changing the hostname in the DDR. But that could lead to confusion.

Plus the target of the DDR replication is read-only. You'll have to break
the replication or make sure you don't write to those volumes.

I was hoping to use a drive letter mapping for my DDR, but the question is
how to do this for a service that runs at startup. I have my TSM Server1
service set to run-as a local user that is also defined on the DDR so
authentication just passes on through. But how to map a drive automatically
when the service starts or the server starts

Then I could just do a snapshot of the target DDR ( as long as it's not
container replication) map my drive to the read/write snapshot and proceed
on.

the devclass.

Our connectivity is UNC across a private network.

We are a month or two from the DR testing.

Are you using the UNC path name for the DEVCLASS or a drive mapping? This is
strictly Winders and CIFS, not NFS.

What I'm coming up against is at the 2nd site after restoring the DB all my

unless I also rename the 2nd DDR to the name of the primary DDR, all my

replicate to a 2nd DDR in a recovery site and having to do a TSM recovery
using the 2nd DDR?

Are you using the UNC path name for the DEVCLASS or a drive mapping? This is
strictly Winders and CIFS, not NFS.

What I'm coming up against is at the 2nd site after restoring the DB all my
volumes still point to the primary DDR UNC name. I can change the DEVCLASS,
but that doesn't seem to effect the existing volumes, only new volumes. So
unless I also rename the 2nd DDR to the name of the primary DDR, all my
volumes are basically unavailable.

Just wondering how anyone else using DDR replication for TSM.

Re: Issue wit IBM Library

2011-11-18 Thread Bill Boyer
One thing I've found with the TS3310's is that unless you turn off the
insert notification/prompt, when you put tapes in the I/O door the library
will prompt you for which library to reserve the tapes for. The default is
'SYSTEM', and unless you respond to the prompt on the front panel of the
library, the I/O slots remained unassigned and a checkin will produce an
error about the slot being inaccessible. If you only have a single logical
library configured you can go in through the front panel and turn the prompt
off.

Have you checked the status and configuration of the TS3310 I/O Station
using the library's Web User Interface? There may be a physical issue with
it.
In TSM interaction with the library, element addresses should be as
described in http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21219973.

Windows scripting for snapshots

2011-09-19 Thread Bill Boyer
I have a customer that has a server with a very large (10TB) volume
allocated on an XIV system. They want to backup this volume to TSM. He would
like to create a snapshot of the volume in the XIV and mount that on the TSM
server and then do an IMAGE backup directly to tape. But they want a way to
script this. We can figure out the XCLI commands to create and map the
snapshot, but the Winders command to get it mounted and a drive letter
assigned is proving to be an issue.

Has anyone done anything similar to automate Windows disk manager in this
fashion? Believe we would use DISKPART?

Re: Nodes with different drive list under One Scheduler.

2011-07-13 Thread Bill Boyer
Just do these steps and you won't have to do anything from month to month to
get full backups:

1. put all these nodes in their own policy domain
2. copy the policy set in that domain to a new name.
copy po standard standard standard-full
3. for each management class in the standard-full policy set, change the
backup copygroup to MODE=ABSOLUTE
upd co standard standard-full mgmtclass t=b mode=absolute
4. On the day you want to run the full backup, schedule and administrative
schedule that runs:
def sched schedule-full t=a cmd='act po standard standard-full'

You will now get a full ( MODE=ABSOLUTE ) backup for all those nodes the
next time the schedule runs. No having to specify OBJ= on separate schedules
for each node. Just let it run the normal nightly ACT=INCREMENTAL schedules.
The MODE=ABSOLUTE will take care of the rest

5. Create another admin schedule for the following day to set it back to the
normal MODE=MODIFIED
def sched reset-mode t=a cmd='Act po standard standard'
blah-blah-blah

Then from month to month there will be no changes on your part to get fulls.
For all the nodes you put in this policy domain, you'll get full backups.

Yes; the Objects list will cause the DOMain statement specs to be
disregarded, much like performing 'dsmc incremental a: b: c:'. The point of
the DOMain option is to allow each client to have a drives list which is
specific to its environment, given that computer disk complements can vary
so much.

And: In your backups, be certain that you really want a Selective backup
rather than Incremental, to avoid bloating your TSM server storage pools.

Re: Nodes with different drive list under One Scheduler.

2011-07-11 Thread Bill Boyer
If you have need to do a FULL backup occasionally, then you could:

1. Put those 10 nodes in a separate domain
2. In that domain you have 2 policy sets: 1 that is your normal daily
incremental backup, and the 2nd one is a copy of the first but changing the
MODE=ABSOLUTE in all the backup copygroups.
3. Use your DOMain client option on each node to specify the drives you want
if they are different than ALL-LOCAL
4. Set up a schedule that activates your FULL MODE=ABSOLUTE policy set when
you want the FULL backups to run. And another to re-activate the standard
MODE=MODIFIED incremental policy set.

Just don't forget that if you're doing retention by versions, that this full
is going to be another version whether the file has changed or not. You
could end up with a lot of your backup files having the active and the most
recent inactive version being the same copy of the file.

Re: Management class assigned to Domino backups

I was hoping to not have to query the BACKUPS table. Even using a key column
it runs slow at best.

I could always try connecting at the Domino nodename with the client an
-VIRTUALNODE=, then doing a QUERY BACKUP. That works with Oracle RMAN and
SQLServer nodes. Haven't tried it on a Domino node, yet. Always a first
time...

You remember the last TSMUG meeting I was discussing a client that was
implementing the Cybernetics VTL dedupe unit? Well, they're still trying to
implement it! No Schmidt. It still doesn't work worth a darn with TSM. They
are actually trying to write new firmware code to try and get around some of
the limitations they've found using TSM.

Wish I could make it next week to the TSMUG meeting. Sounds like some
interesting topics. We have a coworker out and he's got some big shoes to be
filled. Had a major heart attack last weekend. Only a couple years older
than me! Yikes!!!

No, you're right..Never Mind.

I found a post on a Symantec BackupExec forum that talked about performance
and that adapter at the latest driver release. Their resolution was to back
off to the previous driver version. I had loaded the latest listed for
Windows 2008 R2 which was 7.0.0.12. I downloaded and installed the 7.0.0.8
version which was listed as for Windows 2008 x64...not specifically R2. That
release of the driver is working fine now with the tapes created on my other
TSM server system.

I'm going to update my PMR with the driver information.

Interesting the 7.0.0.12 driver is dated 2/2010. So it's a year old. Not
like it's a brand new release of the driver. Figured someone would have hit
on this error before now. The 7.0.0.8 version that works is 6-2008. Almost
3-years old.

Exchange 2007 Restore Problem

2011-02-02 Thread Bill Boyer
OK. I have a customer that upgraded to Exchange2010 from Exchange2007 and
the new backups are running just fine. I started those backups to a separate
storage pool from the 2007 data. Now they need some restores from the 2007
backups, but the original Exchange2007 server doesn't exist any more. As
part of the upgrade to 2010 they had to uninstall 2007 on that server and
then they shut it down and reloaded it for another file server.

So..we rebuilt the Exchange 2007 server in an isolated VMware environment,
defined the storage groups and databases exactly the way they were
originally. Got the information from TSM. I can do the restore and the logs
show as applying successfully, but then everything starts to fail. This is
being done to the RSG.

The first error in the event log is ID: 9638 Function 'EcGetRecoveryDbGuid'
failed with error 0x8004010f. I get absolutely no hits doing a Google
search on that function. That's followed by another ID: 9638: Function
'ErrESECBRestoreComplete' failed with error 0xc7fe1f42. Then an ID:904
from ESE BACKUP Information Store (1800) Callback function call
ErrESECBRestoreComplete ended with error 0xC7FE1F42 Database not found.

I'm getting no where doing google searches. I've done a restore without
checking the recovery box and the log files and a RESTORE.ENV are in the
TEMPLOGS directory. That works just fine. I can then run the ESEUTIL /CC and
see that the log files apply just fine, but then failures above.

Any help on this would be appreciated?

Is there any link out there on doing a complete Exchange 2007 rebuild? What
do I need to minimally do to be able to restore.

Lotus Connections 2.5 Backups

2010-11-16 Thread Bill Boyer
Anyone using TSM to backup a Lotus Connections 2.5 server? I'm starting to
do some RTxM'ing and it looks like one of those mix of products product with
each requiring it's own backup piece. Just curious if anyone else is doing
it.

TIA

Re: Restore TSM server to Win 2008

2010-11-01 Thread Bill Boyer
Ran in to this on a brand new 6.1.2 install and it doesn't have to do with
the GUID on the restore. When the TSM server gets the session request for
the $$_TSMDBMGR_$$ it checks to make sure that the request is coming from
the same computer running the TSM server. It checks the IP address( both V4
and V6) and the GUID of the session requestor against the GUID of the
running TSM system. If they don't match...you get this error. I spent 3-days
with support running traces to track this down.

I've done multiple restores of TSM V6 systems for disaster recovery testing
and for moving to other systems without having to disable this for the DB
restore.

could you guide me as to how to disable the TSM GUID check while restoring
the TSM DB.

Or is there any documentation available for this .. [Wink]

Would like to try this out soon ..

TSM reports the Netware version as 5.60...so Netware 6.0?

Re: Tsm archiving or HSM

2010-10-13 Thread Bill Boyer
Just one comment...there are actually 2 copies of the migrated file's data.
1 is the backup copy and the other is the migrated copy. You can configure
HSM to make sure there is a backup copy of the file before migration. But
since you're going on last referenced date, then probably that file was
backed up when it was created or last updated. The most recent versions of
HSM and the B/A client have more knowledge of each other than pre 5.5
versions. The B/A client will recognize the stub file and not back that the
most recent backup copy of the file. When you restore that file from the B/A
client possibly due to someone deleting the stub file, or a crash, you have
the option of restoring the file data or just the stub.

Just make sure that when you configure the policy for the HSM on the TSM
server you change the archive retention to NOLIMIT and activate it! Believe
me it's messy when TSM starts expiring the migrated archive data when there
are still stub files on the filesystems. Been there...done that...and lots
of teeth marks in my arse!

There is nothing built in to TSM that does archiving based on last reference
date.
You can certainly write your own scripts to select the files and archive
based on that.

There are larger difference between archiving and HSM.
Archives:
-the same file can be archived multiple times on different dates -an archive
file may be left in the directory, or removed from the directory after
archive -to retrieve an archived file, you must deliberately open the TSM
client and select the file for retrieve

HSM:
-There is only 1 copy of an HSM-migrated file, the migrated copy.
-HSM leaves a stub file in the directory when it migrates the file out to
TSM storage. Any attempt by the user to reference that file triggers an
automatic recall (which has implications for your TSM hardware setup).

Does the archiving function allow archiving files based on last reference
date or is that what TSM HSM is for ?

Cybernetics VTL units

2010-08-27 Thread Bill Boyer
Anyone out there using any of the Cybernetics iSAN VTL D2D2T units? It's not
on the TSM supported list under VTL's, but the vender says that's OK since
the models of libraries and drives they emulate are supported.

I have a client that is interested in 2 of these for primary and a recovery
site with replication and was curious if anyone was using any of these
models out there.

TIA
