Moving database to another storage controller
I have a small-ish TSM 8.1.2 with a single db volume. 250GB with only 99GB used. It's on a V7000 that's being returned off lease. I have another V7000 to use. Is it possible to: 1. Allocate another 250GB drive on the new V7000 2. Stop TSM and make sure DB2 instance stops 3. Copy the entire contents of the DBVOL to the new V7000 4. Change the disk volumes so that the new V7000 is the same drive letter. 5. Bring up TSM. I can move the active log and archive log easily enough but I would really like to move the DB without having to od the whole removed and restore db. I had also though about using Windows mirrored volumes. Any thoughts or suggestions? TIA, Bill
Using TDP to backup NDF files
Is there a way to backup NDF files as part of the database backup? I have a customer with a database with an NDF file the use for 'archiving'. That doesn't get included as part of the TDPSQLC BACKUP * FULL command. How can I get that included in the SQL backup of the server? Or do I need to use the BAClient for that? TIA, Bill "Enjoy life. It's more efficient in the end but during the conversion you need extra space on the database filesystems. You can however reclaim that space, I use offline reorgs and reduce max commands on the tablespaces that hold the old filepool metadata. http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21683633 Every conversion I have done has ended up with at least 30% less database space used but not on it's own, they all need some help. If you are having issues with this I suggest you contact IBM support, they can determine what tables to reorg and reduce max to get the maximum amount of space (and performance) back. I would also check out this page : http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg1IT15619 I would advise you to run those selects on the database (might take a day to complete), we have a few cases of orphaned chunks that according to us MIGHT to be related (IBM is investigating) to the use of the protect stgpool command, if you have them I would also suggest asking IBM for support. TSM7.1.7 DB growing with Dedup
I converted a server over to directory container polls and replication. Their previous FILE stgpool was around 140TB of data. After defining everything I used the TSMOC dialogs to enable replication and then started running the CONVERT STGPOOL command. At the start of this I had 430GB of available DBSPACE. I was only running the PROTECT schedules. The REPLICATE schedule was marked inactive until the convert completed. I stopped the convert when I got down to only 70GB of DBspace left and around 40TB to convert. Since then the DB has been shrinking about 2-4GB per day. We're ordering more SSD drives so we can increase the DBSPACE but I may run out of space before then. Is the fact that all nodes are set for replication holding on to some DB and DIR pool space? And my target container pool seems to be a lot different used% even though my PROTECT processes are running to completion. I'm thinking if I remove replication from all the nodes until I'm done with the conversion it should help? Then change each node back for replication and start the schedule. Re: TSM BA installer rant
Double-click on the client installer .EXE and if the install says it needs to install the VC++ libraries or any other pre-req's, cancel out f the client install. Then go to the C:\tsm_images\TSM_BA_Client\ISSetupPrerequisites directory. There are directories for each of the pre-req's. Run them manually and if a reboot is required, you can say no and reboot at your leisure. Then come back and run the setup.exe and continue the TSM client install. As for client upgrades I've found that if you make sure to stop any of the TSM client services that running (JBB, CAD,Scheduler,...) before running the install I don't get asked for a reboot. On top of this it will do so despite you telling it not to. The same goes for the TDP SQL client btw. Cause is some C++ Windows things that must be installed for the GUI to work. For the BA client there is a warning in the Info Center on this. For the TDP it is not so clear, that crucial information is hidden in a technote. IBM therefore thinks they are not to blame but in practise a lot of users fall in that trap and breach their SLAs all over the place. With a GUI one has certain expectations on how it should behave and if no unprompted reboot happened in earlier versions why should it happen now? My opinion on this: 1. IBM should set as a design principle that no customer server should ever need a reboot when installing, upgrading or removing TSM software. 2. There should be no exceptions, but if there are at least make the installer prompt a warning so that the user can delay the reboot until service hours. 3. Software versions that will reboot a server without warning should be immediately removed from PA and other repositories until they are fixed. Regards, Hans Chr. Riksheim

I found that the restrictions of NDMP did not warrant the effort to use it on something like an isilon cluster. The benefit of isilon is the size you can grow them to and the bandwidth you have to storage with multiple nodes. Using NDMP negates all of this and reduces the functionality. - you are limited to the bandwidth a single host(TSM server) and single isilon node can service. - There is no incremental only differential. There is no snapdiff type functionality that NetApps have - you can't use NDMP to back up part of it. - The time it would take to do a full backup. - The time it would take to do a restore. One other niggle is that you need a windows machine to do a graphical restore (Web/Java UI). That said if your data is small then these probably don't matter so much. You have the option to use a traditional TSM Client utilizing the NDMP protocol or have the TSM server perform the backup and restores using the BACKUP NODE and RESTORE NODE commands. Re: V5-V6 conversion failed on INSERTDB with File system full
The first go around failed after about 5-hours with DB2 space shortage. The V5 has a 260GB DB so I created 4x100GB TSM db file systems. When I got the failure messages about file system full 2 of them were 100% and the other 2 were at 87%. So we create a 5th and had 500GB of database space. Then it ran for 12.5 hours and failed with some record conversion error. Opened a PMR and we got hit with APAR IC97407. Any volumes that are EMPTY or have a %Utilized of 0 need to be deleted in the V5 server before you start. Or upgrade to 6.3.4.300. Customer's not comfortable running it on a patch level, so right now we're preparing for the 3rd attempt and making sure any EMPTY volumes are deleted and any volumes with PCT_UTILIZED=0 and no content are removed. This includes all the DISK volumes for the storage pools. Interesting you can have a volume with PCT_UTILIZED=0 and it still have content (Q CONTENT returns files). Apparently the rounding routing to compute the used % doesn't round beyond the 0.0. Migrating off the DIRMC storage pool had that volume showng %Utilized=0, but there are 100,000's of file in it. As long as it has content, the volume is OK. I'm really surprised at how fast this migration/conversion went last time. Only 2:10 hrs for the extractdb phase. And they have 260GB at 90%. As far as the AIX to Linux, seems to be just fine. Ask me tomorrow how this 3rd attempt goes. Anyone done a migration using tape media in a library? I have a customer on AIX using ab IBM 3584 library with LTO5 drives. This library is fibre attached and also zoned to the new Linux V6 server. Re: Informal Poll: General question about use of policysets
Only come across a need once in 16-years of working with *SM. This customer wanted to do periodic full backups. So I had a policy set with set to the default MODE=MODIFIED and another set to MODE=ABSOLUTE. They would activate the full policy set when they wanted to do the complete refresh. And then re-active the incremental policy set. I explained all the downsides to this, but the manager said he had experience with TSM and wanted the full so that all the data for the servers would be somewhat collocated again on the tapes without having to do collocation. That was the only time or reason I saw for multiple policy sets in a domain. Bill Everyday is a Holiday. Every Formation a Parade. Every Meal a feast.. And. I don't mean just the active vs inactive, but you can have multiple policysets like NORMAL, OFFHOUR, WEEKEND, within one domain, and switch them back and forth. I've never done that, or had a reason to. Seems inordinately confusing to me. All my customers just have one policyset per domain, with the active and inactive copy. The inactive is the one you update, then you validate it and activate it. Can I get some feedback on what other people do? Do you have just one unique policyset per domain? TSM/VE and SRM Replication
Has anyone using TSM/VE backups as well as VMware SRM for replication had any conflicts with snapshots between the 2 products? We've had several instances where VM's have issued an alert about Virtual Machine consolidation needed. And just last night we had one of our file server VM's have snapshots with invalid parents and the VM was totally unresponsive. Massive Restore
Windows 2012 server with TSM V6.4.1 client installed. TSM Server is V6.3.3 The server is for archived stuff. It is rather large. 10TB of data and probably close to millions of objects. They have it backed up from a while ago and recently some files/directories were deleted. So now they want to do a restore with REPLACE=NO to get those files back. A backup hasn't been done so the deleted files weren't expired. The one top level directory they want to run this against has more than 7.5 million objects. Is this going to be too much for the client to handle on a single restore request? The next level down in that directory has dozens of sub directories and to do the restores at that level would be a real pain. Any opinions? Any special options you think I should consider using? I know the initial file determination will take a long time. The admin doesn't really care how long it runs.. they just want to recovery as much as they can. Bill Boyer DSS, Inc. Re: TDP Exchange 2010 scheduled backups fail rc=1819
Just on a whim today I had one of the other admins logon to the server and remove the TSM services, re-add them and change the logon-as for the TSM Scheduler service. And now it's working. The first time I logged on as the user that the backup was going to logon as and added the services. Don't know what the Windows difference was in adding the services by another user from the one configured for backups. But now it's working. Re: ANR8386W Slot 16 of library TSMLIBR is inaccessible.
I've seen this in libraries that are able to be partitioned... like a TS3310 library. By default you always get the system partition and when you add tapes to the I/O door the library will scan the slots and then put up a prompt on the front panel asking which logical library you want the tapes to be assigned to. If you don't reply, they hang around in limbo and you get this error trying to checkin. You can turn off the insert notification prompt if you only have 1 logical library. Moving a TSM V6 database
With V5 I was able to move TSM from one computer to another if the database/log files were on attached storage (SAN) as long as I mounted them to the same path that is in the DSMSERV.DSK file. Now with TSM V6 and DB2, if all by db/log/archlog/. files are on attachned SAN LUN's, is it possible to install TSM on a new server, recreate the instance pointing to the same db/log/archlog paths and then re-attach the LUN's? Will the instance come up? Trying to do this without having to allocate additional space (short supply!) and doing a restore. What happened here is that somehow most of the / root directory on the Linux TSM server got deleted, as well as the home/tsminst1 directory. The DB/LOG/ARCHLOG are all on attached Netapp LUN's and weren't affected. I was hoping that I could just reinstall TSM, recreate the instance pointing to the same locations and then map the storage.. Would the instance (and DB2) come up? This way they customer wouldn't have to restore from the last DBBackup and potentially lose data. Bill Boyer DSS, Inc. (610) 927-4407 Enjoy life. Re: Backup data access issue w/recovered DR server
By default, the target of the DDR replication is read-only. You can either mark all you volumes in TSM read-only or you could create a snapshot of the target and use that for TSM. You can always break the replication in a true D/R. -Original Message- From: ADSM: Dist Stor Manager [mailto:ADSM-L@VM.MARIST.EDU] On Behalf Of Schneider, Jim Sent: Wednesday, May 23, 2012 3:18 PM To: ADSM-L@VM.MARIST.EDU Subject: Re: [ADSM-L] Backup data access issue w/recovered DR server Rick, I have had the same problem reading from replicated Data domain file devices on my DR server. Re: More tsm encryption questions
Depends on your goal for encryption. If you need it for encrypting during transport ( or maybe use SSL ), encrypted data at rest on your storage, data is encrypted on the tapes going offsite,... Yeah the key is in the TSM DB, but your need to restore/rebuild TSM to be able to get it. Just dumping out the tape isn't going to get you any eye-readable material. Don't know if the auditors or lawyers would accept it, but it's better than nothing. I've referred to it in the past as the cheap managers' encryption scheme. If you really need to lock it down, then hardware encryption is the way to go with an external key manager, but that co$t$, is vender specific as you need TKLM if you use IBM hardware and you can't mix it if you go to a recovery site. So it depends on what you're trying to accomplish and the budget you have. -Original Message- From: ADSM: Dist Stor Manager [mailto:ADSM-L@VM.MARIST.EDU] On Behalf Of Steven Langdale Sent: Thursday, March 22, 2012 5:10 PM To: ADSM-L@VM.MARIST.EDU Subject: Re: [ADSM-L] More tsm encryption questions Well, there you go. you're spot on there Bill! Re: Using Datadomain for replication
That's fine, but it will fail even though you point the host entry to the DR box. This is CIFS and the \\hostname\backup has to match the one of the DDR you're pointing to. By default on the DDR the hostname is the CIFS NBT name used. You can change the CIFS NBT name to something different (CIFS SET nb-hostname nb-hostname) ...like the original servername in the devclass without changing the hostname in the DDR. But that could lead to confusion. Plus the target of the DDR replication is read-only. You'll have to break the replication or make sure you don't write to those volumes. I was hoping to use a drive letter mapping for my DDR, but the question is how to do this for a service that runs at startup. I have my TSM Server1 service set to run-as a local user that is also defined on the DDR so authentication just passes on through. But how to map a drive automatically when the service starts or the server starts Then I could just do a snapshot of the target DDR ( as long as it's not container replication) map my drive to the read/write snapshot and proceed on. -Original Message- From: ADSM: Dist Stor Manager [mailto:ADSM-L@VM.MARIST.EDU] On Behalf Of Huebner,Andy,FORT WORTH,IT Sent: Friday, December 09, 2011 10:35 AM To: ADSM-L@VM.MARIST.EDU Subject: Re: [ADSM-L] Using Datadomain for replication We are currently building that setup. Re: Issue wit IBM Library
One thing I've found with the TS3310's is that unless you turn off the insert notification/prompt, when you put tapes in the I/O door the library will prompt you for which library to reserve the tapes for. The default is 'SYSTEM', and unless you respond to the prompt on the front panel of the library, the I/O slots remained unassigned and a checkin will produce an error about the slot being inaccessible. Re: Nodes with different drive list under One Scheduler.
Just do these steps and you won't have to do anything from month to month to get full backups: 1. put all these nodes in their own policy domain 2. copy the policy set in that domain to a new name. copy po standard standard standard-full 3. for each management class in the standard-full policy set, change the backup copygroup to MODE=ABSOLUTE upd co standard standard-full mgmtclass t=b mode=absolute 4. On the day you want to run the full backup, schedule and administrative schedule that runs: def sched schedule-full t=a cmd='act po standard standard-full' You will now get a full ( MODE=ABSOLUTE ) backup for all those nodes the next time the schedule runs. No having to specify OBJ= on separate schedules for each node. Just let it run the normal nightly ACT=INCREMENTAL schedules. The MODE=ABSOLUTE will take care of the rest 5. Create another admin schedule for the following day to set it back to the normal MODE=MODIFIED def sched reset-mode t=a cmd='Act po standard standard' blah-blah-blah Then from month to month there will be no changes on your part to get fulls. Re: Nodes with different drive list under One Scheduler.
If you have need to do a FULL backup occasionally, then you could: 1. Put those 10 nodes in a separate domain 2. In that domain you have 2 policy sets: 1 that is your normal daily incremental backup, and the 2nd one is a copy of the first but changing the MODE=ABSOLUTE in all the backup copygroups. 3. Use your DOMain client option on each node to specify the drives you want if they are different than ALL-LOCAL 4. Set up a schedule that activates your FULL MODE=ABSOLUTE policy set when you want the FULL backups to run. And another to re-activate the standard MODE=MODIFIED incremental policy set. Just don't forget that if you're doing retention by versions, that this full is going to be another version whether the file has changed or not. You could end up with a lot of your backup files having the active and the most recent inactive version being the same copy of the file. I downloaded and installed the 7.0.0.8 version which was listed as for Windows 2008 x64...not specifically R2. That release of the driver is working fine now with the tapes created on my other TSM server system. I'm going to update my PMR with the driver information. Interesting the 7.0.0.12 driver is dated 2/2010. So it's a year old. Not like it's a brand new release of the driver. Figured someone would have hit on this error before now. The 7.0.0.8 version that works is 6-2008. Almost 3-years old. -Original Message- From: ADSM: Dist Stor Manager [mailto:ADSM-L@VM.MARIST.EDU] On Behalf Of David E Ehresman Sent: Monday, April 04, 2011 1:58 PM To: ADSM-L@VM.MARIST.EDU Subject: Re: ANR8939E on new TSM server Never mind. Can't uninstall TSM client after OS upgrade
Had a server Windows 2000 with the 5.3 client loaded. The OS was upgraded to Windows 2003 SP2 and now I want to upgrade the client to a supported release for the OS. Control panel add/remove programs and click uninstall of the client and I get an error dialog that the the operating system is not adequate for running ibm tivoli storage manager client. Can't even uninstall the thing! My Google searches haven't picked up anything that matches. Anyone else seen these errors and know of a way around 'em? WINVER.EXE shows I'm at Release 5.2 SP2 (Windows 2003) TIA Bill Boyer
EXPORT TOSERVER
What are the TSM server version restrictions when doing an EXPORT NODE to another server? I have a client that wants to install a TSM 6.2 server and export some data from their existing 5.3 TSM server. I've been searching and must not have the right combination on keywords, but I'm not finding any requirements or restrictions on this. It would be difficult if we had to use media for this and they only want a few nodes from their existing server. And really don't want to have to put any more effort in to the old box.like upgrades. Exchange 2007 Restore Problem
OK. I have a customer that upgraded to Exchange2010 from Exchange2007 and the new backups are running just fine. I started those backups to a separate storage pool from the 2007 data. Now they need some restores from the 2007 backups, but the original Exchange2007 server doesn't exist any more. As part of the upgrade to 2010 they had to uninstall 2007 on that server and then they shut it down and reloaded it for another file server. So..we rebuilt the Exchange 2007 server in an isolated VMware environment, defined the storage groups and databases exactly the way they were originally. Got the information from TSM. I can do the restore and the logs show as applying successfully, but then everything starts to fail. This is being done to the RSG. The first error in the event log is ID: 9638 Function 'EcGetRecoveryDbGuid' failed with error 0x8004010f. I get absolutely no hits doing a Google search on that function. That's followed by another ID: 9638: Function 'ErrESECBRestoreComplete' failed with error 0xc7fe1f42. Then an ID:904 from ESE BACKUP Information Store (1800) Callback function call ErrESECBRestoreComplete ended with error 0xC7FE1F42 Database not found. I'm getting no where doing google searches. I've done a restore without checking the recovery box and the log files and a RESTORE.ENV are in the TEMPLOGS directory. That works just fine. I can then run the ESEUTIL /CC and see that the log files apply just fine, but then failures above. Any help on this would be appreciated? Is there any link out there on doing a complete Exchange 2007 rebuild? What do I need to minimally do to be able to restore. Life is not about waiting for the storms to pass... Re: Restore TSM server to Win 2008
Ran in to this on a brand new 6.1.2 install and it doesn't have to do with the GUID on the restore. When the TSM server gets the session request for the $$_TSMDBMGR_$$ it checks to make sure that the request is coming from the same computer running the TSM server. It checks the IP address( both V4 and V6) and the GUID of the session requestor against the GUID of the running TSM system. If they don't match...you get this error. I spent 3-days with support running traces to track this down. I've done multiple restores of TSM V6 systems for disaster recovery testing and for moving to other systems without having to disable this for the DB restore. Re: Tsm archiving or HSM
Just one comment...there are actually 2 copies of the migrated file's data. 1 is the backup copy and the other is the migrated copy. You can configure HSM to make sure there is a backup copy of the file before migration. But since you're going on last referenced date, then probably that file was backed up when it was created or last updated. The most recent versions of HSM and the B/A client have more knowledge of each other than pre 5.5 versions. The B/A client will recognize the stub file and not back that the most recent backup copy of the file. When you restore that file from the B/A client possibly due to someone deleting the stub file, or a crash, you have the option of restoring the file data or just the stub. Just make sure that when you configure the policy for the HSM on the TSM server you change the archive retention to NOLIMIT and activate it! Believe me it's messy when TSM starts expiring the migrated archive data when there are still stub files on the filesystems.
