Ok, if you really want to know, I finally found a (somewhat data) document
which describes this in semi-understandable terms.
And yes, the real time does fall out of the equations (see watch error - which
is how fast or slow your reference clock is).

I don't know for certain, but I would think one satellite could do it for
timing alone. Two for sure. Three will give you a 2D fix and 4 will give
you a 3D fix.
