Re: [AFMUG] Packetflux Gig Sync injector - 320 wimax. - Jumpers?

2017-09-08 Thread Forrest Christian (List Account)
With the 320 and 430 you have two options:

1) Buy a 10/100 injector, and re-jumper it.

2) Use a gigabit injector off the shelf with the cable described in the
cambium manual. The cable in the cambium manual is the one from a CMM4 to
a 450i. Because we use 'normal' pinning on our gigabit injectors, the
cable is not needed with the 450i, but is needed with the 320 and 430.

The reason for this is that the 320 and 430 do not use a standard pinning.
Worse, the pinning is not compatible with gigabit powering schemes which
all require the same polarity and voltage on both wires in the pair - the
320 and 430 use a different polarity on each pair.

I used to use a bunch of different knots when I climbed a lot. Now I use
lift loops as they take zero skill and untrained monkeys can use them
safely. They are just a load rated loop and you wrap them around anything
from a rope to a pipe without slipping.

Re: [AFMUG] Ot: how to avoid this?

2017-09-08 Thread George Skorup
Good luck getting the customer to refuse since ComEd will charge $10/mo
for manual meter reading, even though they've been doing estimated
readings for, I don't know, 2-3 years now.

But wait, there's more! Even if you DO want it, you still pay an extra
$3/mo for this awesome new service that trashes the spectrum. Also for
that $3/mo, you get to be told that you're not green enough, you bad human.

Yet Exelon and ComEd don't have "enough" money to improve the grid or
their stations. So they need gov't money, which we don't have.

Oh but wait, you can buy your power from another "carrier" if you want.
What a crock of shit ponzi scheme.

This entire state is fucked.

We have had a Mexican stand off of sorts with PG (Pacific Gas &
Electric) for at least 4 years. When they send a tech out to install it,
I ask if they have figured out how to lock out specific frequencies to
avoid interference. The tech replies he doesn't know, and I request that
they have someone get back to me with their plan. To date, they have
never followed up.

You can use the new injectors with 320 as long as you configure the jumpers

Re: [AFMUG] Packetflux Gig Sync injector - 320 wimax. - Jumpers?

2017-09-08 Thread George Skorup
The CMM4 has this same problem, just in reverse. Its pinout when 48V
mode is selected is for the 320/430's split-pair power on the spare
wires. To power a 450i from the CMM4, you just reverse pins 5 & 7 at one
of the RJ45's, or make an adapter pigtail that does the same thing. The
CMM4 is not capable of gigabit, which is why they came up with the CMM5.

The GigE PowerInjector+Sync is bonded-pair powering. IOW, you can't set
polarity on individual pins. That's what the 10/100 version of the
PowerInjector+Sync gives you. And it's only 2-pair power, 4,5,7,8, with
1&2,3&6 untouched passed straight through.

The GigE version out of the box is configured for -4&5 +7&8. 1&2 and 3&6
are not jumpered for power, but it is capable of 4-pair power and the
jumpers are there if you need them. You're not worried about gigabit,
because the 320/430 isn't. So the same thing applies. You should be able
to swap pins 5 & 7 at one end to "un-split" the split-pair scheme of the
320/430.

Unless there's something I'm not realizing that could cause a problem...
maybe Forrest can jump in here if he isn't too busy.

Also, to note, if youre only using 20mhz channels on epmp, you dont
need gigabit, 10/100 is so much more stable

IMHO a max prefix limit is just insurance, especially omniscience’s Mikrotik
with route leak issues. Folks LIKE Packet Clearing house have done APNIC and
Nanog presentations on why this can be an assist. I have had major backbone
providers hit routing filters on full tables set at 900k more than once just
this year alone. Most of it was due to Cisco bugs.

Id recommend new serverplus customers get walked through the issue tracker
view of the DTs, Id make that non optional and require sign off. The
flowcharts just dont cut it, seeing what the serverplus folks see makes a
world of difference.

As a new customer, I did ask about what they see, but probably not in a way
intake understood what I was asking.

Would have saved on some rage and a near fistfight here at the shop.

I'm looking for a basic-level Ethernet cable tester that only checks the
wiremap, gives pass/fail and preferably is <$100 and has a simple TDR.

It must survive Canopy 30V PoE voltage as it seems that many of the dead
testers that we have in a pile are due to field techs plugging them into live
lines. Monoprice $80 tester is OK but definitely does not survive the live
lines.
A test I'm considering is soldering ~15V zener diodes inside a unit to trigger
a PSU's short protection before frying the cable tester...

I got one this year. Love it. It saved my bacon twice. Paid for it's self
the first time. Wiremap is the best. Customer said cat5 in the house is
straight through. Electrician confirmed. I showed a break at about 100
feet. Electrician crawled the attic and found one of his minions put in a
junction and swapped a pair. The swearing from the attic was priceless.
Next day said minion re pulled the cat5. When he was done electrician fired
him.

Subject: [AFMUG] Basic Ethernet cable tester that survives PoE voltage?
I'm looking for a basic-level Ethernet cable tester that only checks the
wiremap, gives pass/fail and preferably is <$100 and has a simple TDR.

It must survive Canopy 30V PoE voltage as it seems that many of the dead
testers that we have in a pile are due to field techs plugging them into live
lines. Monoprice $80 tester is OK but definitely does not survive the live
lines.
A test I'm considering is soldering ~15V zener diodes inside a unit to trigger
a PSU's short protection before frying the cable tester...

Amazon has some for $5. Won’t survive PoE but we have the same problem, hence
the $5 testers.

Let me put it to you this way... based on the prediction tracks...

Keep in mind.. the main travel roads are in the 'spine of Florida and

The storm is approx 300miles wide with an eye of approx 20miles...

Re: [AFMUG] Gino, I know you are probably dealing with a lot....

2017-09-08 Thread Faisal Imtiaz
Did a trip to Downtown where most of the DataCenters are..
I have never seen downtown Miami this quiet.
Most builds have been evacuated and sealed off.. (that area is under Mandatory
Evacuation).

There are some folks / security, bldg engineers around..
Everyone is bracing for the worst.
Lots of folks have first hand experience of going thru Hurricane Andrew, and
Wilma and others...

Let me put it to you this way... based on the prediction tracks... Houston will
look like a 'non event' compared to the damage the Whole State of Florida will
take.. and quiet possibly Georgia

Keep in mind.. the main travel roads are in the 'spine of Florida and Georgia'
while the other main routes are on the coastal areas...
East side is expected to be on the 'nasty' side of the storm... the west side
is also going to get it bad

The storm is approx 300miles wide with an eye of approx 20miles... (State of
Florida is only 140miles wide , with the exception of the panhandle area).

(BTW, a 2x4 piece of wood hitting Concrete Cinder Block at 140miles/hr will
penetrate the cinderblock like a hot knife thru butter.. just to give you an
idea of what we are talking about..)

 Thanks Tim,

Yes, the most recent advisory is not good... Showing Miami to be on the
worst side of the storm (NE side)... and quiet possible whole of Florida
getting ripped from the South to the North right down the middle of the
 State.

And even Georgia & Tennessee getting a fairly strong punch..

Regardless of how it slices and dices, the aftermath, the width &
breadth of it ... is not going to be pretty.

 Keep us in your prayers...

Is it too late to change your policy now? It's not like healthcare where
you can only get it at certain times, right?

Re: [AFMUG] [WISPA] PSA: BGP broke 650k routes

2017-09-08 Thread Faisal Imtiaz
hmmm not a good ideal on setting up prefix limit on your Full Table IP
Transit BGP Connections..
setting prefix limits on your Peering BGP connections is an excellent idea.
Using ACL Filters to explicitly accept prefixes from your down-stream, and what
you advertise to your upstream is best practices.

2017-09-08 Thread Faisal Imtiaz
South Florida, after Hurricane Andrew, has been one of the worst places to buy
Homeowners Insurance.

1) No company offers Replacement insurance for Content
2) Insurance companies have separated water damage out from their coverage...
(Flood Insurance from Gov).
3) Lot of the items are not 'excluded' or carry a premium charge.. e.g anything
externally attached to the house..
shed, fence, pool, awning etc etc.
4) Many of us are not able to afford the Windstorm coverage.. (high property
values and higher premiums)... Just to give you an ideal, Homeowners policy
without Wind Storm Coverage is $4200/year... adding WindStorm would be an
additional $10-$12K / year i.e. $15-18K / year... (the home value is also high
6 figures).
5) The insurance companies have been getting very picky about everything...

So, putting all that aside, yes there is a portion in the Homeowners Insurance
which pays up to a certain limit for "Loss of Use"...

I'm not sure where the 650k max-prefix-limit came from - consultant or I
thought it was plentiful - but both of my peers just hit 650.6k and 651.2k
routes which caused all kinds of fun this morning.
