I can easily max out a 1000BaseT speed test (when hardwired to a port in a gigabit FTTN fed MDU) on a ten year old Thinkpad T60 running xubuntu... The key part is having a "real" Intel NIC chipset on the bus, recent linux kernel / good driver support. None of that realtek garbage. Time Warner/Spectrum seems to provision for 20% above advertised speed both upload and download. They have been consistent on that percentage for a while now on many locations I have had the opportunity to test.
