Any suggestions? We have lots of short sentences to choose from, which

DIS: Agora & Friends Diplomacy

2021-09-28 Thread ATMunn via agora-discussion

Hello everyone! After the success of last year's Diplonomic tournament,
several people on the Discord server expressed interest in playing
Diplomacy again. We decided not to do it as an official tournament in
Agora, but rather just a fun side thing. An advantage of doing it this
way is that we can use a website to run the game, meaning we don't need
a gamemaster. We will be using the website Backstabbr
(https://www.backstabbr.com).

Another thing we decided is to do teams. Last year, Aspen and Trigon
formed a team and played together as England. They both expressed that
they really enjoyed that and wanted to do that again. By doing teams of
2, we can get up to 14 players.

To fill all these spots, I've also sent an invitation to those on the
Infinite Nomic Discord server.

If anyone is interested, go ahead and sign up here:

[2] The promise purports to create another promise upon cashing and then
immediately cash that new promise; the effectiveness of this is
  PARADOXICAL under CFJ 3901.

CoE: This is a misreading of CFJ 3901. CFJ 3901 stated that the
statement "The cashing of one or more promises created by G. has been
EFFECTIVE at changing the final vote tally and/or number of voters on
the referendum to adopt Proposal 8543, for the purposes of R208, R879,
and/or R2623." was PARADOXICAL. The PARADOX was in the effect of the
promise, not the cashing; the promise was unambiguously cashed. Unless
I'm mistaken, the promise no longer exists, so the portion of your
report saying it does is in error.

# Summary

Welcome Shy Owl, for real this time!

This week starts in silence, enough to make some wonder if the lists are
working. A burst of activity happened with the first stone auction and
bugfixes on stone rules. Some ratified mistakes get fixed and Falsifian
finally gets some coworkers at the Agoran Press. Meanwhile,

# Voting

* Voting concludes on Proposal 8522 (cleanup of Rule 2531).

* Voting begins on Proposal 8523, a fix for the Concentration Stone in
Rule 2645 (see "Stones" below).

# New players

* Shy Owl registers. Thread: "Intention to Register"

# Stones

* The Stonemason initiates the first stone auction. Thread:
"[Stonemason] Throwing Stones"

* Aris, nix and Jason submit and pend a proposal to fix Rule 2645, as a
player with an Economy Focus and a Concentration Stone could earn over
700 coins in a month. Aris, as Promotor, distributes it immediately.
Thread: "[Proposal] Emergency Economy Unbreaking"

* nix submits a proposal to tidy up Rule 2643 and prevent stealing
stones from Agora using the Soul Stone. Thread: "[Proposal] Agora's
Stones Are Immune"

# Rule questions

* Does a "SHALL" in an auction regulation constitute a pledge? CFJ 3888
gets assigned to nix.

* Is the Webmastor an office? Jason judges CFJ 3889 TRUE after noticing
a mistake was made when applying Proposal 8388. Threads: "CFJ",
"[Arbitor] CFJ 3889 Assigned to Jason [attn. Notary]"

# Meta

* lucidiot and Murphy join the Agoran Press, and Murphy unsuccessfully
attempts to take next week's assignment. Thread: "@Treasuror [Agoran
Press Editor] Payroll and Salary Claim"

* The Agoran Press follows the inflation updates and switches to
boatloads of coins. Thread: "@Notary [Agoran Press] Giving myself a raise"

# Miscellaneous

* Jason transfers the talismans of Tyler, Zyborg, Fred and Shelvacu to
Agora, then announces intent to deregister em. Threads: "Zombification
[attn. Shelvacu]", "[Registrar] Expedited export"

* nix ratifies without objection that e owns three pendants missing from
the Treasuror's reports. Thread: "@Treasuror RWO Asset Recovery"

* Murphy announces intent to award the Patent Title of Hard Labor to
Publius Scribonius Scholasticus for eir work as Referee, Tailor and
Herald. Thread: "Intent to award Patent Title [attn Herald]"

I didn't even notice that this wasn't done by Falsifian until today.
Well done!

other than the Prime Minister CAN flip eir orthdoxy by
announcement, if e has not done so during the current month.
If a player becomes Prime Minister, e becomes Abiding.

At the beginning of each month, each Rebel is granted 2 Blots.

A Rebel CAN Call for Revolt by announcement, provided that no
other call for revolt has been made that week and that no
successful revolt has occurred for a month or more.

Following a call for revolt, the Referee CAN (once) resolve
that revolt by announcement, selecting a random integer between
1 and the number of active players. E SHALL do so in a timely
fashion after the call. If this number is less than
   or equal to the number of Rebels, then the Revolt succeeds;
otherwise it fails. All numbers used in this calculation are
determined at the time of the call for revolt.

If a Revolt succeeds, then the following events occur in order,
based on player orthodoxy at the time of the call for revolt:

   * the Blots of all Rebels are destroyed.
   * each Rebel is granted a Victory Card.
   * the office of Prime Minister becomes vacant.
   * each office held by an Abiding player becomes interim.
   * all Rebels become Abiding.

If a Revolt does not succeed, then:

   * All Rebels are granted 2 Blots.
   * The player who Called for Revolt is granted 2 (additional)
 Blots.
   * the Prime Minister is granted a Victory Card.

This sounds fun. I feel like there should be a bit more of a reward for
the Abiding players upon a failed Revolt, but I'm not quite sure what it
would be.

Only Nathan may be a party to this contract. Nathan may not destroy
this contract. All actions in this contract happen under a "I say, I
do, therefore it happens" basis, meaning that all actions are taken
instantly, without implicitly advancing time. As the rules do not
prohibit it, in this contract, multiple actions may happen at the same
time. Time does not advance during this contract's effects unless
explicitly stated by this contract or the rules. This contract is
capable of owning assets.

For the purposes of this contract, an instant is defined to be a
specific moment in time, with infinite instants in any given division
or unit of time. An example of an instant would be precisely 1.87856
seconds after midnight on July 12, 1983. Any measurement of precise
time can be understood to be an instant. An instant can not cover more
than a single instance of precise time. For example, an instant can
not be the entirety of the second after midnight on July 12, 1983, but
precisely one second after midnight on July 12, 1983 can be understood
to be an instant.

Multiple actions can resolve in the same instant. If an action starts
and resolves in the same instant, that action takes no time. Actions
that resolve in the same instant can be dependent upon prior actions
in that instant. For example, in the same announcement, one can
transfer coins from a locker or similar contract to themselves, and
then perform an action with those coins, both of those actions
happening in the same instant despite the second action being
dependent on the first one. Actions dependent on another action can be
started and resolved at the same instant as the action it is dependent
on without passing time.

This contract can perform any number of, or every, action(s) on the
behalf of any party to this contract. This contract can consent to any
number of, or every, action(s) on the behalf of any party to this
contract.

This contract and any parties to this contract consent to every
transfer of Dock assets.

A Dock asset is an asset with default owner Nathan. The class of
entities which can own a Dock asset is restricted to Nathan and this
contract. If the ownership of a Dock asset were to be transferred to
the Lost and Found Department, ownership is instead transferred to
whoever most recently had the Dock Asset, not including the Lost and
Found Department. A Dock asset can be transferred to this contract or
any party to this contract. Consent of parties to this contract or the
consent of this contract itself is not needed to transfer a Dock asset
to this contract or to parties of this contract. This contract can
create a Dock asset at any instant.

This contract creates one Dock asset.

If, at any instant, Nathan owns any given Dock asset, this contract
will, on eir behalf, transfer that Dock asset to this contract.

If, at any instant, this contract owns any given Dock asset, this
contract will transfer that Dock asset to Nathan.

}

The Supertask Experiment fails. Contracts are not able to act on behalf
of players.

You could still amend it to make it work - instead of saying that the
contract does a thing, say that the contract enables a party to do said
thing (if that makes any sense). Also, if you are actually done with it
- as the Notary, the person who keeps track of contracts, I would
request that you destroy the contract. You'll have to amend it to allow
you to destroy it though.

I'm confused by your statement, though. The contract's provisions ensure
the money is used only to reward people who write Reportor summaries,
and I think it is better for Agora if people write such summaries. Are
you saying the contract's provisions need to mention the betterment of
Agora explicitly? (I was thinking of the provision you quoted when I
wrote my petition.)

Hm, you have a point. I read "ensure" as meaning something close to
"explicitly state" but I see now how it could easily go the other way.
Thinking about it more, I'm not sure what the right answer actually is.
I don't think it's grounds for a CFJ though since it's only a SHOULD and
requires 3 Agoran consent anyway.

Alright, as per tradition, someone’s gotta start the scam speculation thread.
Possibilities I can see:
  - G. has a proposal force-through scam
  - G’s hoping to bribe people into voting for this, possibly by revealing the
MYSTERY DOCUMENT to them in private

As to what the MYSTERY DOCUMENT is, I wouldn’t read too much into the AI of

Any further thoughts?

Obviously, it's just a very minor bugfix. Why would it be anything else?

Pretty sure I have 2 victory cards, not voting cards. I think this
happened because you have the result of the victory auction listed as
giving a voting card (cuz abbreviations).

Also, I think I still have a voting card - I don't remember doing

The Notary puts in a lot of effort into fulfilling eir duties and is

DIS: [Draft Contract] Contract Awards

2020-07-13 Thread ATMunn via agora-discussion

I have drafted a simple contract to make my Contract Awards system more
official. Comments welcome, but if there are no major flaws, I will
likely create this contract in the next few hours.

{

Contract Points are a fixed, indestructible currency with ownership
restricted to persons, tracked by the Notary. Once per week, the Notary
SHOULD publish a list of all Contract Point balances.

To award a gold medal to a person is to cause em to earn 3 Contract
Points; to award a silver medal to a person is to cause em to earn 2
Contract Points; and to award a bronze medal to a person is to cause em
to earn 1 Contract Point.

If e has not done so already in the current week, the Notary CAN award
gold, silver, and bronze medals. E SHALL NOT do so except in accordance
with the following set of guidelines:

1. There are three award categories: Participation, Popularity, and
Opulence.

2. The Participation Award shall be given to the persons who are party
to the greatest number of contracts.

3. The Popularity Award shall be given to the persons who are creators
of contracts with the greatest numbers of parties.

4. The Opulence Award shall be given to the persons who are creators of
contracts with the greatest number of coins.

5. In each category, a gold medal shall be awarded to the single person
who came in first place; a silver medal shall be awarded to the single
person who came in second place; and a bronze medal shall be awarded to
the single person who came in third place.

6. If two or more players would qualify for a gold, silver, or bronze
medal in a particular category, no medal of that type shall be awarded
in that category.

The Notary is ENCOURAGED to publish the list of Contract Point balances
and award medals soon after e publishes eir weekly report.

If any person has at least 30 Contract Points, the Notary SHOULD award
em the Terms of Service Patent Title. Unless the Notary deems that a
particular person has created an exceptionally outstanding contract
worthy of bypassing this system, e SHOULD NOT award any player the Terms
of Service Patent Title for reasons outside of this contract.

When a person is awarded the Terms of Service Patent Title, all of eir
Contract Points are destroyed.

Any player CAN become a party, or cease to be a party, to this contract
by announcement.

Re: DIS: [Diplonomic 2020] Advice and Information about Conditionals and Missing Information

2020-07-12 Thread ATMunn via agora-discussion
On 7/12/2020 8:37 PM, Publius Scribonius Scholasticus via
agora-discussion wrote:

First of all, the first set of orders with conditionals is coming in
reasonably well. I've had to request a few clarifications or expansions,
but people have been helpful and responsive. I would like to make it
publicly known that I have prodded and asked for orders in instances
where I found them unclear or believed there to have been an oversight
in forgetting to update something with a change or failing to include
necessary information. I believe this is appropriate because the game
should be won on skill of order making and negotiation not on simple
mistakes.

Second, I should provide some more information on conditionals.
Conditionals can use any information that would be publicly available
after the orders have been processed. Conditionals can make use of
randomness or non-specific algorithms as long as they are definitive and
clear. I must, however, be able to evaluate it by hand and, the more
complicated and algorithmic it is, the less common sense and forgiveness
I will give it.

When you leave out information, I will prompt you to provide it, but if
it is still missing when I am processing orders, I will first apply the
spirit of the civil unrest rules, then common sense, and finally
randomness. If I believe you mistyped an order or sent an invalid order,
I will ask for clarification of it, but because those are permissible,
you can tell me to leave it as is.

Concerns have been expressed about the conditional system and the
potential lack of information. I apologize for not sending a more
obvious reminder about this, but if you want to change it, a proposal
would be an appropriate approach.

I'm not sure I entirely understood that conditionals were even a thing.
Could you give some sort of example of a conditional?

I destroy my 12 doubloons in exchange for the plundership coins.

problem: Bögtil is not a player, therefore can't own coins, but e owns
doubloons, so those doubloons are currently useless.

solution: make it so a) non-players can't own doubloons or b) non-
players get kicked out of the contract. idk which one is better

I intend on it becoming so, I just haven't had much time with Diplonomic
starting. I plan on making an official contract for it. Should be
happening soon.

This seems to be saying a fleet can only help convoy an army between
two coastal provinces that are adjacent to it, ruling out convoys
that require multiple steps.

I wasn't sure what exactly to do about that. I see and agree with your
interpretation, but I also felt like just removing the word "adjacent"
could imply that the unit being convoyed doesn't have to be adjacent at
all. I guess that common sense takes over there, though.

I think the key is that success for the convoy is a global property
depending on the set of undislodged fleets involved.

Here's an attempt to replace your last paragraph. Maybe it could be
made shorter.

{
A Convoy order orders a fleet in a water province to move an army from
one coastal province to another. All fleets that have convoy orders
listing the same source and destination provinces are "participating"
in that convoy, with the exception that if a fleet is dislodged, it is
not participating. A convoy is successful if the army in question
makes a move order consistent with that convoy, and the fleets
participating in the convoy form an unbroken chain connecting the two
coastal provinces. (Extra participating fleets / multiple chains are
okay.) When a convoy is successful, the army's move order is
interpreted as if the source and destination provinces were adjacent:
for example, if the destination province is empty and no other unit is
trying to move to it, then the army will move there.

Hm, maybe it should be clarified that support orders are interpreted
this way too...

When a convoy is successful, that army's move order, and any support
orders for that move, are interpreted as if the source and destination
provinces were adjacent: for example, if the destination province holds
one unsupported unit with a Hold order, and another army is supporting
the move into the destination, then the move succeeds and dislodges that
unsupported unit.

Seems good to me. Should I withdraw my original proposal or should I (or
you) submit another one fixing it?

Maybe the best option is to increase the scale to a 0-5 scale instead of
0-3.

I like this idea a lot. As pointed out on Discord, there should be some
initial complexity values. I thought I would suggest some:

ADoP: 2
Arbitor: 1
Assessor: 3
Coopor: 1
Distributor: N/A?
Herald: 1

I think Herald should be higher. E has a wide variety of duties:
tracking karma; tracking a long history of patent titles (the only other
report I'm aware of that's required to include a historical record is
the Registrar's monthly, but I think that's simple by comparison);
coordinating peer review and awarding of patent titles; not to mention
making sure the Birthday Tournament happens.

Not sure if 2 or 3 is appropriate though.

Notary: 2
Prime Minister: 0
Promotor: 3
Referee: 2
Registrar: 1
Rulekeepor: 3
Speaker: 0
Tailor: 1
Treasuror: 2
Webmastor: 1

Again, just suggestions; I didn't put a ton of thought into these, and
I'm sure some will disagree. But I think something like this would work
for the initial values.

"Team Play" by Aris

{
Amend Diplonomic Rule 7 to read in full:
   7. Contestants may seek the assistance of non-Contestants. If any do so,
they SHALL notify the Judge and publicly announce the identities of any
such non-Contestants and what assistance they will provide. This could
include negotiating on eir behalf, providing feedback on orders, or
drafting proposals on eir behalf. Any notifications given under the
former section 7 of the Birthday Tournament regulations are considered
to have fulfilled this section of the Diplonomic 2020 rules.

A contestant CAN, by announcement, cause a person who consents to become
or cease to be eir teammate, provided the person is not another contestant
or the teammate of another contestant. Designating someone as a teammate
is considered a notification that the teammate may assist the contestant
in any manner. When these rules provide for certain contestants to win by
a certain method, the Gamemaster CAN include their teammates and SHALL do
so unless it is eir opinion that extraordinary circumstances render it
against the best interest of the tournament. Teammates are encouraged to
lie to and cheat other teams, and SHALL NOT engage in any behaviors
outside
of the tournament intended to influence its course; however, they
SHALL NOT
   betray their teams.

}

omd's Proposal #1
{{
In the following passage of Diplonomic rule 15, change "24:00” to “18:00”:
{
At the beginning of each turn, there is a period, lasting from 0:00
UTC until 24:00 UTC on the same calendar day, in which negotiations
should occur.
}
[This moves 6 hours from the negotiation period to the order-submitting
period, making both 18 hours long, rather than 24 and 12 respectively.
The goal is to make it easier to avoid accidentally missing the
order-submitting period, even if large chunks of it are taken up by,
e.g., sleeping hours or work hours.]
}}

"Order Clarification" by ATMunn
{
Amend Diplonomic Rule 17 to read in full:

17. There are four possible orders: Hold, Move, Support, and Convoy. Not
giving a unit an order is interpreted as ordering it to hold.

A Hold order orders a unit to stay where it is.

A Move order orders a unit to move to a different province. Armies can
only move onto adjacent inland or coastal provinces. Fleets can only
move to adjacent water or coastal provinces. A Move order making use of
a Convoy must specify what Convoy paths it will use or conditionals to
determine such.

Support orders help another unit's action, whether or not it is a unit
of the same Great Power. An Army or Fleet can provide support to another
Army or Fleet. Support can be offensive or defensive. A unit cannot
support an order to or on a province which the supporting unit could not
move to itself.

A Convoy order orders a fleet in a water province to move an army from
an adjacent coastal province to another adjacent coastal province.
Multiple fleets may be used to convoy the same army, allowing an army to
be convoyed over multiple water provinces. If any fleet involved in a
convoy is dislodged, the convoy fails.
}

"Voting Fixes" by Aris
{
Amend Diplonomic Rule 8 to read in full:

   8. At any time, any Contestant CAN submit a Proposal to change these
rules by announcement. Any Contestant CAN withdraw any Proposal e has
submitted by announcement. When a Proposal has been submitted but not
withdrawn, any Contestant CAN privately send a vote to the Judge, or
withdraw eir previous vote. When a Proposal has received a number of
non-withdrawn votes in favor greater than half the number of Contestants,
the Judge SHALL, in a timely fashion, and CAN enact the proposal by
publishing the new text of the rules and the number of votes in favor
and against. The Judge SHALL NOT reveal the votes of specific
   Contestants.
