Hi Andrea, With print music, like sheet music, guitar tablature, or tabs are a small diagram which appears above the staff. They show finger placement for particular chords. They are sometimes referred to as a chord box. I think of them as kind of a key for the guitar player to follow, especially for beginners who haven't completely learned how to read music. . If you are a patron of the NLS, you should call your local librarian to inquire about what the NLS Music Section has to help you with tabs. I know the NLS has Bill Brown's Guitar by Ear instructional series, which I have and it is very good. But I can also understand if you want an in-person instructor.
