As I said, devfs loads modules automagically on access.

Thank you Clemens!!! That worked. How can I configure it so that
RealPlayer and all my applications play through that plug:spdif port?

Ok, my fault. For some reason when I did dpkg-reconfigure alsa-base I
could select atiixp but it failed. Turns out I didn't have th
Hi Gabriel,
Thanks for answering. Yep I did read it all kinds of links about
udev. But that doesn't mean I understood all of it :)
In any case, I remembered /etc/default/alsa (debian system) with,

I guess. But if you look at lspci it seems allmost everything is ATI:

Maybe you didn't notice that udev doesn't load modules on device node access

Hello All,
Not sure whether to take this to this list or a hotplug list. I'm
subscribed to this one so...
I just switched to udev from devfs on a powerbook. Kernel is 2.6.4 and
udev is version 022. The snd-mixer-oss and snd-seq-oss are not being
loaded at boot nor are /dev/sound/* and li
I'll try again. I think my last email screwed up.
You can all ignore the one I sent before about not being able to get the
ALSA plugin for XMMS working. I've got it working but now I have another
problem. I noticed that in the alsamixer there were two things showing
up. PCM and Speaker. So all

I've also tried creating speaker.48000Hz and I've also tried putting them
both in but XMMS always crashes with this message...
Broken Pipe

I'm having trouble getting ALSA to work with XMMS and am hoping someone
can shed some light on it for me. This is my .asoundrc file...
pcm.48000Hz {

pcm "hw:0,0"

}
route_policy default

That's it. There's nothing else in there. When I run XM

I still can't get audio out the SPDIF port on my Shuttle XPC SN41G2
running Fedora Core 1 and the latest ALSA. I've included more debugging
info. I've tried many things to no avail. Do I need to perhaps run a
CVS version of ALSA??? Please help...
# uname -a

I have an MAudio Deltio DiO 2496 sound card that I'm trying to use for simple
playback and I can't seem to get to the end of my problems. OSS emulation
playback has pops / clicks. And I'm unable to get native ALSA to work in some
programs.
Is there any way to turn debugging on in the drivers?
