As I started this thread, I have to come clean.
The solution to my problem -- snd_hda_intel on Ivy Bridge had nothing
to do with the driver or hardware. Merely getting the device correct.
aplay -l gives me the card and subdevices, and, in my case, aplay -D
plughw:0,7
