I'd guess that some parameter in /etc/modules.conf is wrong.
Please check that the cards_limit optio
I recently re-installed the ALSA package and can't
seem to get my cdrom to produce audio. Last install
required no additional effort for the cdrom device.
Now, RealPlayer produces audio ok...sort of, but no
CDrom.
Perhaps I need to give some command to kmod before
launching the Gnome cd-player. ?

Hi There Mark,
Yes spot on ,i've got a genius soundmaker live 5.1 , i've adjusted the
3d control in the mixer to almost completely off and that seems to have
done the trick, it loses some of the "3d effect" but it's a good trade
off:)
Thnx for your help

Whilst reading from my cs46xx sound card in a
while(1) loop, I have noticed that my program hangs up without giving any error
message (after making several successful reads) if I use a buffer size of 256 or
greater. If I keep the buffer size down to 128 my program doesn't
hang.

just a note... i had this problem too but only with alsa-oss 0.9rc1
i found it was because mandrake uses version numbers for autoconf...
something like autoconf-1.4 or whatever...
as soon as i re-worked the symlinks in the files it compiled fine...
cant remember which ones they were exactly but i
If you are using a 5.1 source, then it sounds like the relative mix between
your left/right pair where the music is, and you center channel where the
dialog probably is, is not well balanced. Look at your mixer to see if you
can control the 5.1 channels separately.

HI There,
I have a problem in that the music of any movie i watch is not relative
to the voices. ie . the music would be very loud and the voices very
soft.
Does anyone know why this might be happening ?
I've tried adjusting my mixer settings but to no avail
Thnx

And what does "restart" mean?

i correct myself - its *left* channel that has some sound, right channel
is only distortion, but both left and right are heavily distorted.
sound on the quattro is fine in windows (ick!) ... so i know its not a
problem with the quattro itself

running, but the sound quality is heavily distorted - to say the least -
well basically its all feedback!! it can't be a usb mouse conflict, as
was suggested on another list, as i am not running any other usb devices

Hi,
I am also using a cs46xx based card (Terratec XFire 1024) and haven't
seen such error messages with any alsa version I've installed so far.
I've installed the alsa rpms of several Mandrake distros as well as
several tarballs from the alsa project page. I've also never seen this
