Too bad that it did not help. I still have no idea what the reason for

I assume you are using the packages amanda-server and amanda-client from
Ubuntu's repository. I remember there were several issues with them
under Debian and Ubuntu in the past. Maybe it would help to build

Whats happening when you try to backup single client?
i.e. amdump clienthost?
does it works?

KJ, unfortunately the something amandad on the client gets defunct and there
procs do not go away until I kill them. The procs hang ( I think until timeout
) and get an EOF in the log.
The fact that amandad is defunct must be what is hanging the backup, I have not
been able to figure out why

Please:
1. clear environment (kill zombies, hung processes, etc)
2. try to backup single host
3. try to backup all hosts EXCEPT amanda
