There are many areas where very small decisions of questionable wisdom in default applications really hamper the user experience (even in the using it just to make calls sense), but these can't be very readily changed on a retailphone, particularly the parts most closely involved in the telephone functionality. As of this moment, I believe most of the retail phones are probably still shipping with an easily rooted linux kernel, but that probably will get closed up (already fixed in google's tree) and they will be limited until another hole is found. -- Regards, Michael Leung http://www.itblogs.info http://www.michaelleung.info -- Cumprimentos, Hugo Rafael Augusto --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Android Beginners group. Hi, just tried this again with the ADT 0.9.3 (downloaded today) and Android 1.6 r1 (also from today) and in the Virtual Devices-Window I can see my newly created AVD with a green checker to the left: A valid Android Virtual Device. ANDROID_SDK_HOME is properly set to C:\Users\nico; for user and system-environment variables. I can also see the emulator-image being properly created in C:\Users \nico\.android\avd\Emu_1_6.avd\userdata.img. I'm using Windows7 RC 64Bit with a 64 Bit JDK and Eclipse is running (or has to run) with its own 32 Bit JRE. Any ideas? When the user location is not the default one, we have seen some cases where windows reports the location of the user folder differently depending on which API you use (the command line tool and Eclipse use a Java API, while the emulator use a windows C++ API). That would explain why the command line tools and Eclipse could see my_avd just fine, but the emulator could not find it. But, shouldn't Android be set up to use HOMEDRIVE/HOMEPATH? Standard environment variables. I think there are difference on XP/Vista which makes using those hard to use (back in the previous SDK we were using LOCALAPPDATA but we ended up having the same problem). What we use on java is the user.home property setup by the VM. Looks like the Java VM thinks your home is in S:\... I look again into these 2 env variables and see if they could be used. Also, a single line in the installation instructions could have prevented this confusion. When Android can see the AVD from the command line and the Eclipse gui, but not from the emulator, and no explanation is given (especially on the first test project), it's ... disheartening. I agree. We should at least have the emulator output a message saying where it's looking for the AVD and how to fix the problem if it's not where the AVDs are created. In any event, with the ANDROID_SDK_HOME variable set to the S: home (which is not the real home directory, that is on C:), the emulator now works. Well we don't want to go and set a permanent env on your machine. I guess we could but relying on existing standard env variables should be better. I mean, what happens if the user removes it or change the location of his/her home folder but doesn't update this? In any case we do need to find a solution. [android-beginners] Re: Problems importing Notepad Tutorial projects with Fedora Eclipse 3.4.2, ADT plugin 0.9.1
Well, I still have no idea what causes the Android project creation dialogue problem with ADT 0.9.1 and Fedora Eclipse 3.4.2... however after upgrading to the new ADT 0.9.3 (and installing SDK 1.6) the problem has gone away so it's now a moot point. Following the update the dialogue elements for selecting a path when creating a project from existing files do get enabled when they should, and I'm finally able to use the Notepad Tutorial files properly. On Sep 16, 8:00 am, Anthony anthonyhorto...@gmail.com wrote: On Sep 15, 10:29 pm, John P. johnny.d.p...@gmail.com wrote: I'm confused because if you've successfully done step 2 where you presumably clicked on the radio button to Create project from existing source, you should get an enabled textfield where you can specify the location of the said existing source. If it is indeed true that such textfield does not become enabled, then may I suggest creating a new Android project, and manually placing the Notepad tutorial files to where the new Android project resides. Be sure to refresh the project from Eclipse so that it picks up your manual filesystem changes. Yes, that's exactly my problem. When I select the create from existing source radio button in the create Android project dialogue I don't get an enabled text field and browse button with which to select a path. I know I should, and I was hoping that someone had seen a similar ADT problem before and could say what's going wrong. I do get the enabled text field and button when creating a general project. Thanks for the suggested workaround, that should at least enable me to start working through the tutorial. I'd really like to get to the bottom of this though. On Sep 14, 11:55 am, Anthony anthonyhorto...@gmail.com wrote: Hi, I've installed the Android SDK (1.5 r3), Eclipse (Fedora Eclipse 3.4.2), the ADT DDMS Eclipse plugins (0.9.1.v200905011822-1621), and successfully worked my way through the Hello World Tutorial. However I'm not able to get very far into the Notepad Tutorial because I'm not able to properly import the project files. No problems downloading the ZIP archive and extracting the files to sub-directories of my Eclipse workspace directory, however I'm then unable to open them as Android projects in Eclipse. The Notepad Tutorial instructs me to: 1. Start a new Android Project by clicking File New Android Project. 2. In the New Android Project dialog, select Create project from existing source. 3. Click Browse and navigate to where you copied the NotepadCodeLab (downloaded during setup) and select Notepadv1. This is where I hit a problem, as with my combination of ADT plugins and Eclipse version the New Android Project dialogue doesn't have a 'Browse' button or any other way to select a path for the creation of a project from existing source! All I get is an error stating AndroidManifest.xml not found in samples. and no way to proceed any further. As that was a dead end I tried to import Notepadv1 as a General Project and use the Android Tools to convert it to an Android project afterwards. The general project dialogue at least gives me the option of selecting the path to the Notepadv1 project directory so I'm able to create the first project, however when I then right click and select Android Tools Convert to Android Project I get an 'Problem Occurred' dialogue windows which tells me that 'Convert Project' has encountered a problem. Notepadv1 does not exist. The Details button doesn't give me any details. The project now appears as an Android project, but fails to build after a clean or a modification to the files. The Android ADT error in the Problems tab is 'Failed to get output folder!'. If I try Android Tools FIx Project Properties I get the same error dialogue as with Convert Project. [android-beginners] Re: About ERROR: unknown virtual device name: 'myavd'
Nicolas, what's the problem exactly? To be honest, nothing has been done on the AVD handling since this thread was originally created. Any ideas? Only the Desktop and My Documents special folders are on S:. Everything else (including App Data) is on C:. [The documents are shared between operating systems on different partitions] Android (or Eclipse?) has been the only thing to use S:. [android-beginners] Re: When does one start to develop for 1.6?
that's fine if you want your app to not be available on most devices for some time. the date when 1.6 devices start appearing in one thing, the date when most devices will have been updated is another. that's really what you should be targeting. i'd say target your 1.6 app release for ~1 month after the last provider makes their OTA 1.6 update available. [android-beginners] CheckboxPreference vs. CheckBoxPreference
I just ran into this and thought I would post this for anyone else who might be struggling with the same problem. In creating preferences, I had the following code in res/xml to define my preference activity: PreferenceScreen xmlns:android=http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/ android CheckboxPreference android:key=App_Start_Notification android:title=Notify When AppSwipe Starts / CheckboxPreference android:key=Boot_Notification android:title=Notify On Boot / /PreferenceScreen ADT did not complain about this (and is usually pretty good about catching errors) so I thought everything was fine. However, when I went to access my preference activity I got a crash and logcat gave a ClassNotFoundException. Turns out it was a simple change: Checkbox should have been CheckBox! --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Android Beginners group. I'm also very new to Android. And I would like to have the following - 1) I want to add and / or del any apps I want to - For this just any phone would do it? Or I need an unlocked one? 2) I would also like to craft part of OS and / or base framework - For this, Is it enough to have an unlocked phone ? I'm getting a T mobile G1 unlocked, is it fine for (2)? 3) I think the emulator should allow us to test out various form factors, since it might not be possible to buy and test all available phones out there... -pro --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Android Beginners group. [android-beginners] Re: help
You're mixing a few things: - the id of a view (i.e. R.id.calculate_id) is just that: an identifier that lets you *find* the object in question. - you can't assign to that id, it's just a constant integer Instead you should do: - find the view based on the id: EditText myEditField = (EditText) findViewById(R.id.calculate_id); - use some of the EditText methods to change the text: http://developer.android.com/reference/android/widget/EditText.html e.g: myEditField.setText(42); I *strongly* suggest you get an introductory book on Android or look at some of the samples under SDK/platform-1.6/samples/ HTH R/ On Wed, Sep 16, 2009 at 8:39 PM, Rc3375 rcobb3...@gmail.com wrote: i have a file that was created in eclipse. the screen has been designed with one field that the user would enter a value such as 123.45, and the rest of the fields are calculated from the 123.45. all the EDITTEXT fields have their default values(public static final int calculate_id=0x7f050006).(from the R.java file. they are assigned a value from the calculation(R.id.calculate_id = xx;). all the values in the R.java file seem the default to public static final int calculate_id=xx. the R.id.calculate_id = XX fails. it does not matter if XX is an integer, double or float. is there a way to convert the R.id.calculate_id(EditText) field to either float or double? i have tried to parse it and cast it. but everytime that is done and you recompile the file, the R.java file will revert to the orginal settings. literally driving me nuts...help --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Android Beginners group. You should keep your minSdkVersion to whatever is the minimum API supported by your app -- simply test them using an AVD based on the API level 4 to run the emulator using Android 1.6 . However, yes, if you try to publish an app using minSdkVersion=4 today on Market, nobody will be able to download it.
