I should qualify that as 'unique to all archival objects?'. Any other object (resource, accession, etc) may have the same id number, though the number is unique within the type of object. Hope that isn't confusing! Joshua From:

Anna, We use a plugin to achieve something very similar here at NYPL - https://github.com/alexduryee/aspace_serial_numbers. This auto-generates a component_id when an archival object is saved without an ID, starting from 300 and incrementing by 1 each time (using ASpace's built-in Sequence).
