And occasionally took him for late night walks (me on my bicycle) with a bag

In south-west Houston, you can buy them at $5.99 per pound!!! Guess what? A

19 years, these ' golden fruits' are allowed by the US govt.to be

Re: [Assam] xoru-kotha

2007-06-20 Thread Alpana B. Sarangapani

Hi KJD: $5.99 meaning Rs. 240 for 1/2 kilo of potol? I never bought any potol
in this country. Ful-kobi, bondha-kobi-ei thik-e aase` aamaar kaarone`. :) And
$3.50 meaning Rs.140 for one mango? Again, kol-Komola- is good enough! Just
like, it's not worth buying 6 shrimps for $20. Never liked shrimps even when I
was a non-vegetarian anyway.

Well! it was good talking about 'bojaar-xomaar' here today. Keep in touch!

Hi abs,
In south-west Houston, you can buy them at $5.99 per pound!!! Guess what? A box
of Indian mangoes ( ten mangoes) will cost you $35.00.After a hiatus of 19
years, these ' golden fruits' are allowed by the US govt.to be imported.I
hope, nobody buys them at that exorbitant price.

Re: [Assam] xoru-kotha

2007-06-20 Thread Alpana B. Sarangapani

Thanks C'da. I would have been happier if it was called green gourd instead of
pointed gourd as DD said. And the botanical name is too hard to pronounce for
me as usual. :)

BTW, we followed the instruction for the Neem tree, changed the pot and
everything, but not a single leaf is showing now - I think it died on us.

Thanks again.

Botanical name of 'potol' is Trichosanthes dioica.

It is one of those vegetables that I had no use for. It is mostly seeds, like
bheem kolor guti, except bheem kol tastes far better. It was one of those dried
up, miserable botanical specimens that we, as college students were required or
forced to eat, in the name of vegetables, along with months old cabbage that
long lost its green . But somehow our 'bongali' friends loved it, it is a part
of their culinary heredity I guess.

Thanks for the chart. As usual, they didn't include Assamese as one of the
languages. I thought snake gourd was 'dhunduli'.

There you go, Umesh-ji. Glad you understand.

We take our dogs at night for walks also - they are not other dog or people
friendly as well - to go out when there are a lot of people walking their dogs,
but are wonderful companions, though others are scared of them. :-)

Alpana-ji,

I know what you mean about dogs. I miss my dog - Rambo (named by my brother) in
India - with whom I had climbed hills in leopard country where he chased
peacocks - and the huddled alongside me when he smelled the leopards.

And occasionally took him for late night walks (me on my bicycle) with a bag
filled with stones - to throw at scores of dangerous dogs on the way.
