Just to follow up on this...
It appears that the problem was that the mail server ASSP was connecting
to was running out of incoming connections. When that happened, ASSP was
noting in the log that it was unable to connect to the mail server and
then returned the 502 AUTH not supported error.

You need to post the logs from ASSP, not some third party bounce message...
