Re: What Hand Do You Read Braille With?

Yeah I remember another thread about this too.I only read braille with my right hand, which doesn't seem so common at least on this thread. When I was in middle school, I switched teachers and the new one I got wanted me to practice reading with both hands. She made it very deliberate, which made me even less willing to do it. I think that's why I don't. It was forced on me well after it would've felt natural for me to work on it, and I didn't see the need for it. I still am not quite sure I would need it tbh. I don't read braille enough to need to speed read. As it is, I can read braille at a fairly normal speaking pace I think, though I'm a bit rusty now.I can totally relate to the feeling backwards thing though. The weird thing is, mentally I know it's not backwards, and physically I can recognize the shapes of the letters even if I read with my left (unpracticed) hand. But for some reason the shapes feel, I dunno, backwards? Inverted? Something, I can't pinpoint it, but it definitely feels like some sort of spatial conflict is going on. F feels like D, J feels like H, stuff like that. I could almost consciously feel my brain going "No, that's not D, check again, really feel the pattern, yeah that's F. Are you sure? Yep. Okay... please let the next letter be an a, or a q, or a g, something that's harder to distort." That was almost a conscious thing like I said, it wasn't quite that vivid but yeah. I powered through it when I was made to practice, but it was tough. Add that to my being insanely out of practice just discerning the dots with that hand in the first place, and yeah. I didn't like it.I'm still legit curious as to why that backwards feeling was there, like why does my brain have to go through this sort of remapping process to flip the shapes? If my left hand was simply out of practice distinguishing the dots, I probably could've dealt, but the spatial stuff, and having no explanation for it, just drew me away.I haven't gone out of my way to test this with other things, but when I was bored and messing around, I could play the same melody with either hand on piano, or type on a braille or computer keyboard with either hand individually. I'd never do any of that without good reason, but it was something I could manage. It was insanely awkward and uncoordinated, but I don't remember feeling like my sense of finger space was spinning like that.I guess it just comes down to the fact that playing piano and typing doesn't require you to sense multiple things under each finger, it requires you to change your hand positions instead, which my brain grew used to early on because of typing and or playing piano as a kid. But when it comes to fine tactile perceptions, the neural paths for each side are going to work a little differently especially when doing something as complex as feeling the shapes and patterns of fine braille dots on a page. Unlike typing, reading braille is more about fine tactile sensation rather than distinguishing finger-sized keys from one another. I guess since I didn't practice that, my brain never learned to deal with it fluently.

Re: Console Titles Other Than Fighting?

Check out my thread too, I don't just cover fighting games. Assault is laying it down rightly, though I feel like modern fighters and beat em ups are managing to tell deeper stories that take dozens of hours to complete, with plenty of lore and banter between bouts so you can get to know the world and characters better. But for non fighters that are playable, most of the ones I know of are for retro consoles, like the last two entries in the thread in my sig. No one has even mentioned the rhythm heaven or few mario party games that are playable yet. The playable non fighters are out there, you just have to be willing to either experiment with games or talk to people that do. I've bought quite a few non fighters myself based on the experiences of other blind gamers. Some genres are more manageable than others for sure, and thats true even if you exclude fighters. It helps to be familiar with different gameplay types so you can orient yourself to a games setting and layout. Microsoft has a good record when it comes to backwards compatibility. Perhaps there are playable non fighters for Xbox one, x360 or the original Xbox you may find to your liking. Dont know much about their exclusives though. I have been drawn to sony's and Nintendo home and portable consoles for a long time..

Re: anyone knows if this feature on Youtube is already usable?

If you mean activating it on videos that have it, I enabled it by clicking more options then audio track. That was for the IPhone, but on the computer I imagine you just click the settings button in the video player and it should be in there. If you mean how do you add it to your own videos, I'm not sure you can. I searched for as many paraphrased versions of how to add audio description to YouTube video as I could think of, but I could only find third-party websites that do it like You Describe. I can't find an official way to add it. If anyone else knows, please do let me know.

Quite interesting. There was another topic about this a while ago, and until I discussed with other people I thought that it was a norm that you read with both hands, and I am just exceptional and read only with the left one, just like @1 describes, but then I saw that it's not at all uncommon. You are definitely slower this way though, but I am not sure if this can be corrected with practice, because I almost can't even distinguish letters with the right one unless I try really hard.

Off the top of my head, only the adventure to fate games feature actual mazes to navigate. The ensign and a dark room come close, with 2d overworld maps which you must navigate step by step, but of course those maps are fully open. I don't know if untold has maze elements later, though when I last looked at it's map it was more like going from one linked  place to another, and other rpgs like path of adventure or homequest just don't work like that.

I agree. As much as it pains me that we may never see a Super Liam 2, I respect Liam's choice to forego any sequels as his own choice. It still sucks, and yes I think decanonizing the game makes it feel somewhat worthless in some ways, I still love SL. In my head canon, it's all real. Liam is a super hero, the crystal sent him to an alternate dimension where X1 rules the world, and he kicks his ass again. If I ever create a side scrolling platformer, you can bet your ass It'll probably be very influenced by SL.

Re: Design Strategy: Following Party.

As mentioned, party members who follow you out of combat has been done quite a bit over the years in RPG's, Paladins Quest, the Dragon Warrior series, etc. One way of implementing it could be, that instead of playing the main characters footsteps, you could swap that sound out for the sound of a group walking. This way you wouldn't have to necessarily simulate or play the footsteps of every character independently, although this may depend on how you want to implement things and/or context, like in combat or out, etc.As for variable speed, touching on those kinds of aspects can in some cases be more trouble than their worth. Variable speed can play a factor in some games based on encumbrance, in RPG's a group will usually slow down to the speed of the slowest member so as to remain as a cohesive group. But in practice, if it takes players forever to get anywhere, or they have to wait for everyone to get together before going somewhere, it can be an exercise in frustration and may discourage the use of some characters. Usually such speed aspects come into play during combat, via attack speed, turn time, dodge rate, attack accuracy, etc.

Re: Console Titles Other Than Fighting?

Challenges isn't the problem. A lot of these games don't have a way for you to get to objectives, or any indications as to where you are. Assuming you're totally blind, of course. If you're playing an open world game, for example, you'd basically have to run into an objective by pure chance rather than finding it. TLU2 is an exception because of its accessibility features. But if you turn off all the accesibility features and then start from the beginning, that'll give you an idea of how it is to play most mainstream games that are not fighting games as someone without vision. I'm definitely willing to play through more gamesthan most, and I consider myself as someone with a lot of patience. But the fact is that a lot of games that have decent stories are just not possible to beat without help, though that looksto be changing with TLU 2 and other things coming down the pipeline. Games that are playable like 13 Sentinels and Odin Sphere are playable by accident, not by design. Sequence Storm is a good one on PC, so is Slay the Spire. And there are probably others. But for games with an engaging story, I'd say your options are pretty limited. But I may also be wrong there, and would be very happily surprised if I am.

Patience isn't an issue.  I don't mind working patiently to solve something or to progress, especially if the story is a good one.  That's why when I played TLU2, I did not avail myself of the "skip puzzle" feature at all.  I was determined to play without skipping anything, and I managed to figure out the puzzles without having to skip any of them.  I also like a challenge, so I'm not going to be scared away from a game simply because it's more challenging to complete than one that's in the fighting genre.  As far as platform availability, I'm also expanding this to include PC.  I want games where fighting is not the central theme or goal.  Like I said, I'm not totally against fighting.  It can be part of the story, but it shouldn't be the sole mechanic for progression, and it shouldn't be the overall goal.  and the games can be on PS, XBox, PC, or a combination of all three.  Thanks.

If you have 5d6 then you have to generate 5 uniformly distributed random integers between 1 and 6, then sum.  This isn't mathematically equivalent to generating an integer between 1 and 30 because reasons that I can't do the proof for offhand anymore and also it needs calculus or something to do said proof. It's not complicated, just a simple for loop.  But if you're going to do really complicated expressions like this in a loop for a game or something and they're going to be all over, that gets slow even in C++ and you'll want to look into more efficient approximations, or adopting a random number generator like xoroshiro.  But that's probably way beyond anything you want to do here.

Design Strategy: Following Party.

2021-02-28 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — Developers room : redfox via Audiogames-reflector

Design Strategy: Following Party.

Hi,SO in a lot of RPG games, you'll have a party, but when you're not out of combat, they'll just not be visible. I was wondering, would there be a possibility of having the other party members actually follow you around the maps. My mains worries are thus:In an audio based game, the footsteps behind you would be loud and distracting:A way to solve this may be to use a concept I talked about in a topic before about Sound Queues, where the order of sounds, if you have 10 footsteps, is determined randomly where no number repeats, played in that order, and then reshuffled. I feel like there would have to be a lot of footsteps per surface, so that it doesn't end up reshuffling to fast so you don't keep hering the same steps sound over and over. In an Rpg system, this could be helped with armor/clothing clinks or rustles being added in to add variety.Characters moving at different speed. This could just be left out, but if someone is walking in Plate Mail, they're going to move slower than someone in Leather Armor. This means that the player has the opurtunity to leave behind other characters, which also means that travel would be slowed suggnificantly, if the players were forced to make sure the characters kept up.Any game design ideas for something like this? By the way, I'm not looking for code, simply bouncing ideas.

By the way, I'm not looking for code, simply bouncing ieas.

You have to walk an unknown distance and then gain a single level.I did it by walking clear cross-country and then back (without taking shortcuts like the ship to shadow canyon). I don't know how much overkill that is but it worked for me.Use encounter downs and you'll be done in under an hour.

I have to agree. As much as I'd love to see SL2, Liam has made his position clear and we ought to respect that. He was, after all, about nineteen or twenty when he coded the game and, as has already been stated, had a lot more energy and drive for that sort of thing back then.

Re: Console Titles Other Than Fighting?

13 sentinels, aegis rim, but that's not on the xbox. The reason most fighting games come up under accessible is because those types of games are the ones we can most easily clear without any sighted help. Most games you are discussing that have deper stories and multiple mechanics are not fully completeable unless you are either going to get some sighted assistance, have a boat load of patience, or both. For ones other than 13 sentinels, if you are looking for something party and group oriented, the Jackbox Party Packs are always a good romp with friends, especially now with everyone having to spend more time at home. They cover a great deal of different types, but all have at least one game that is decently playable. But I hope that enlightens you as to why mostly fighting games get talked about around here. I think most people here don't like fighting games exclusively, actually. They're simply the ones that are the easiest to get into and complete. They aren't the only ones, but definitely the easiest ones.

Re: Extended PEMDAS.

Hey regarding the randomization of the dice result (that is using a random number between the minimum and maximum possible dice roll), you should avoid doing that. This is because it changes the probability distribution of the results. For example say you rolled 2d6. The minimum is 2 (1+1) and the maximum is 12 (6+6). So you then have an equal chance of rolling a number between 2 and 12 (1/11), however that isn't how the roll would play out for a real pair of dice.

Re: What Hand Do You Read Braille With?

@6Exact opposite here.  I thought everyone was taught only to use one hand, until I got to first grade, and at that point reading with two was just not a good option for me, as like I said, everything seems backwards with my right hand.I use my right hand, but it's less for reading, and more to keep my place. I do drop my right down to the  next line to hold the spot, I just don't read actual Braille with it.  I'm not sure if everything being backwards is like...some form of dislexia (although I doubt it).
