@Dark: That's what I meant.I never had much luck with AACm mostly because of some of the puzzles and platforming elements in this game. But that was two or three years ago, I'll have to try it again.And by the way, I have edited post 26 so people reading it now will understand the context even though Liam has changes his signature. Re: I am affronted by the presence of god

a higher power does exist, he is inside of you, you can feel him, and that voice you hear throughout your day rather you choose to ignore it or not, it's him. i can't give you a reasonable explanation on why bad things happen, why people of this world is cursed with sickness and disabilities, but what i do know is every bad situation could be worse. yes i know we get tired of hearing that, we get tired of thinking that, but it is true. i know at times when life is hard we start to question if a God exist, or if he even loves us, but if if you are still on this earth breathing, then yes he does. you have a purpose on this earth, you just have to find it, and fight through the shitty hand life has dealt. the bible describes God having almighty power which he may have, but since the people of this world are not cured and protected from evil with a snap of a finger, we then question his power. there are rules, and a process to everything in life, and i think the power of God works the same. pretty sure my rant hasn't convinced any non believers to get down on there knees and start praying, but i hope it did help you realize be thankful you are still breathing and living on this earth, make the best of your shitty hand which can still produce amazing results. see how many poker players won thousands, and millions with a bad hand. see how many people with disabilities and sickness did amazing things with a bad hand, things that a person with no disability couldn't dream of achieving. its all about how you play the cards that are dealt to you. trust me everyone in life has a bad hand dealt to them in some shape form or fashion, we just always don't see it out in the open

Re: Extended PEMDAS.

@12 I think you might be interested in trying out a parser combinator library. I haven't used any in python, but I have used them for Elm and Haskell, and they are totally non-magical and one of their major strengths is their strong typing, which really helps you figure out whether your parser logic actually makes any sense before you even run it. I see there are some python libraries that follow the same design like Parsec and Parsita. again I haven't tested them, but it might be worth checking something like that next time. hopefully there is a parser combinator library in python with good type hints as wellthere can be issues with performance when if you deal with a backtracking parser, so you need to take care there since if you put together two parsers with backtracking in two different ways that give you the same result can have drastically different performance profiles. also at least from my experience from Haskell parser combinator libraries, performance varies quite a bit, so when finding one in python I would assume you would also need to be careful in choosing one if performance is key. although even the slowest libraries are still fine if you aren't developing some web service where throughput is #1 metric and parsing is the major bottleneck

Re: I am affronted by the presence of god

I respect people enough to let them have their own beliefs about spirituality and religion. (to a certain degree at least) Usually I'm not so quick to be so opinionated about a subject like this, but the short of it  is that I agree 100% with what you've outlined. I've asked a number of people in my life why a god would allow situations (like the one you had the courage to share) to happen to those who especially don't deserve it. I have yet to get an answer that sits well with me or convinces me that the god they speak of is loving. I've gotten to a place much like the one described by @3 where I'm not really angry anymore about this, but I can certainly see how having someone in your life going through so much can make it almost impossible not to be frustrated. For what it's worth, a lot of people (myself included) have likely found themselves at a low point asking the same questions with as much passion.

Re: I am affronted by the presence of god

I'm okay with the idea of a god, or godlike being, maybe not stopping a serial killer, or a rapist, or some other horrible act of human fuckery. Free will is important, and that means that some small few of us, as individuals and as small sub-groups, are going to do tremendously awful things to other people. I don't like that, but I know it's part of the human experience.Where I've always run into a hard stop is with things like cancer, Alzheimer's, Huntington's, and half a hundred other nasty things our bodies can go through. If there really is a god worth believing in, as far as I'm concerned, this god is either all-powerful and cruel, or not all-powerful and as helpless to end unnecessary suffering as we are. Given that most of the main Abrahamic religions (Christianity, Judaism, Islam) try extremely hard to convince us that their god really, truly is all-powerful, then the accompanying caveat is inescapable. And so for me, it's as simple as this. You're asking me to waste time accepting the existence of a being you can't even prove to exist, and to sweeten the bargain, this creature is both so mysterious as to elude being found out, and so cruel as to ruin entire families due to things like sudden death or illness.My brother died suddenly and with absolutely no warning at the age of 19. Someone made the mistake of telling me that he was in God's hands now. Without missing a beat, I shot back, "No. If he was alive, he was maybe in God's hands then. But God couldn't be bothered juggling this particular human life, so...oops. So sorry. But hey, at least the other son is alive. He's blind and isn't going anywhere in life, but hey, one out of two ain't bad." Seriously, if you ever talk to me or get to know me, and you ever directly or indirectly imply that my brother's death was a means of testing me, strengthening me or in some other way performing good, I will very likely cut ties with you completely and not look back...and I don't do that easily. Of course, I don't expect any of you to do this. My point here is to say that God often gets invoked by generally well-intentioned people with a religion-sized blind spot in their empathy field. And as an agnostic leaning far toward atheism, I am thoroughly tired of it.Some religious folks have deep wells of empathy, and are wonderful human beings. We've got many of them right here on the forum (I won't name names specifically). But yeah, as far as I'm concerned, any deity's unwillingness to end these terminal diseases and thus diminish the suffering we experience is not a god worth any shred of belief or love.GCW, what you're going through cannot be easy. And what your grandmother's going through can't be easy on her, either. I feel powerless. I wish there was something I could do. My only suggestion to you is something you may already be doing. If there are things she likes, things that bring her joy, do your best to bring her those things. If you play guitar and she likes that, play for her a little more than you once did. If she wants to sit and ramble a bit and feels comforted with you being there, then be there. When her time comes, she'll be gone, and you can go back to whatever else you were doing.

swamp problem

Hello guys, I would really appreciate if you can help me with an issue I am having with swamp.I have an old pc with just 2 gb of ram and I decided to install and play swamp on it since my laptop will be sent for repairs and I will have to use this machine for a few days. I have installed windows 7, the 64 bit version, it's the best I could do for this old computer. Anyways, yesterday I could play swamp fine but today I keep getting this error when trying to log-in: Log-in Failed.  Your IE settings are not allowing Swamp to securely connect to the server for log-in.  In Internet Explorer, open Internet Options.  Go to the Advanced tab and select Reset to return Internet Explorer to its default settings.  This should allow Swamp to connect properly.I have done what it suggest, I reset my internet explorer several times, cleared all personal data, even removed it from windows features and turned it back on but no luck. I also run the win64.bat and checkup.exe from the swamp folder but no luck what soever. What else could I try? I am so pissed off since yesterday all went fine and now I just can't understand why it wont let me login.

Re: I am affronted by the presence of god

If you take this then add on the fact that psychiatry basically disproves the existence of the soul, you're halfway to atheism.  The other half is getting to the point where you're not angry at god, because there is no god to be angry at, and being angry at god or some other higher power is also a form of belief.But you're probably in the 95% of humanity for whom atheism is another religion as opposed to the lack of one, and if that's the case and you're looking to come to terms with this there's theodicy.  I don't have any resources on that at all and literally all I know about it is because I read Unsong, which is a really great read if you want incredibly weird genre-defying sci-fi/fantasy about sweatshops that reverse engineer the names of god.  I don't need it, so I didn't go further than "Huh, this is a real thing that exists".  But there are a bunch of people out there trying to find some sort of philosophical justification for it, and maybe one of them works for you.

First off, I know this isn't going to go over well with a lot of folks. If you're religious in that way, feel free to skip this one, and if you don't, you get what you get... fair warning.Not 15 feet away from me is a lady who is tossing and turning while trying to sleep. Her bones are being eaten away by a vicious and very aggressive form of cancer. In the daytime, she is almost herself... almost. Of course, the dementia is there, and it has been for quite some time, but you can almost think she's her old self. She takes a little longer to get up, she hobbles and wobbles, but otherwise, she seems like herself.When the sun goes down though, that's when it all falls apart. The veneer of normalcy is torn asunder and the reality of the situation becomes apparent. This is common in the elderly though, and it has a name - sun downers syndrome. But for those who have never experienced this, let me tell you a bit about it.Imagine if you could turn off someone's brain, or at least, turn off all but the very basic operations. While they can hear what you are saying, they really don't understand you. Oh sure, their grasp of their mother tongue hasn't gone away, but any form of thought has. Their mind is hollow. If you've ever been able to see, and you've seen windows 7 or earlier with the generic display drivers, no chipset drivers, etc. it's like that.I've seen her try to cut a slice of cake with her oxygen hose. Wait a minute, I said cut a slice of cake... not cut a slice from a larger cake. SO two things have gone wrong there. She also forgets how to eat. She'll hold the spoon or fork in her hand and stare at it, seemingly unsure what to do with it.Most of the time, and thankfully so, she doesn't feel pain. Though the incidence of pain have been increasing. No one seems to be sure why, as the cancer, at it's current rate, should be causing no end of it. The working theory is that the dementia masks the pain. So either she's simply not feeling it, or she forgets that she has felt it.So when she's in the chair at night, and it's time to get her in the bed, it's difficult. Mind you, she is under hospice care and does have a hospital bed right there in the living room. But the pain makes it hard for her to walk, even with help.We have medicine for the pain, and it works a bit. We've just started her on meds for the anxiety she feels at night due to the sun downers. But still, when we have to lift her legs up onto the bed, it hurts her quite a lot.This is someone who had been wronged in life, and to my knowledge, has never done wrong to others. She was cheated on by her husband - my grandfather - and he left her for this other woman. Still, he did his best to take care of her, but it was an odd relationship after their divorce. She raised her kids, babysat, then helped raise her grand kids. In all that, she never really had the strength to take her life into her own hands and make something of herself.That's not to diminish her in any way, it's only said because it's one of many fine details in the tapestry I'm weaving for you all. Nevertheless, she was a good mother, and a good grandmother.Living in a free country, as I do, I believe in the freedom to make ones' own choices. Among those is the choice to accept a connection to the spirit world through one of many religions. Even now, in the depths of all this, I still hold that you should be free to choose what you believe in. But I want to focus on Christianity, because it's what my family chooses to believe.This god, who we are told about as a child, is supposed to love and cherish each of us as his children. But, is that happening right now? I don't think so. After all, she could just fall asleep and not wake up, and pass on without having to feel the pain. She doesn't deserve it.Did it happen two years ago with my grandfather? No. Even if you accept that he had done wrong in his life for committing adultery, had nothing in the intervening time been enough to absolve him of that? I've posted on his story here as well, so I won't go into it, but suffice it to say that his last two years were not good ones.Does god love and cherish the children who die of cancer when so much of their potential had not been tapped? When they hadn't even begun their journeys. When you see them, and they're trying their best to put on a brave front for their parents and family.Where's the love? not only that, but people out there give themselves entirely to this god, and sing his name to the roof tops. They spread his name to the 7 seas and beyond, but look at what he's wrought, if he truly exists.You could say that god gave us free will, and so now cannot tamper with us. You could say that because of the covenant he made with his people after the flooding, he cannot punish us to the same degree. But does he not have influence?Would this not be a good time for the second coming of Christ? If not, then when? But we don't get that

While I think there will be some unique games as demonstrated by the contest we held recently, as I said elsewhere I'm also in agreement that we'll just see the market over saturrated with a bunch of these types of games. As I said in another topic, I'd rather see sable used in the role of a world builder where you build worlds and so on. It sounds crazy, but I like it for that use as well

No I don't think it will create a revolution in audiogames either. It'll be like the good old days in the new releases room again where you couldn't go two minutes without stumbling into another reskinned Zombie Arena or whatever. Except now instead of Zombie Arena it's gonna be "Johnny needs to fight through a maze and kill a dragon to get a bunch of gold and stuff!" over and over again, and the dragon sound effects are all going to be the same. And then there will be a million topics in the developers room like "Hey guys I started developing my game with Sable now I can't add minigames like in Manamon what do I do?" It'll be fun.

@Lucas: You couldn't create Manamon, even without the puzzles. That is, unless you were okay with having a static party. From what I gathered from Brandon's live streams, it might be the case that the output would play similarly to A Hero's Call. Every game is going to have basically the exact same gameplay. To avoid that, you need scripting.

I want to be optimistic about this, but sadly I just can't.The Sable devs will be able to make games with it to great effect, because they will be able to add features to Sable as they need them. As for the general public, I just don't see much long term interest in a bunch of games from different authors using the exact same battle system among other limitations.I mean, there were RPG makers on consoles which obviously offered no scripting implements, so maybe there's a certain market for that sort of thing, but those expecting this product to trigger a revolution in audio games should prepare to be disappointed.

Re: Kenshira Plays season 2: Audio demos of mainstream games

Hi, everyone! It's a new week, which means that it's time for a new game! Today, I'm slashing my way through fate/unlimittedode for the psp!Firstly, let me apologize for the long delay between the first and second episodes of this second season of Kenshira Plays. So much has been going on, including national termoils, lunar new year festivities, other projects and unforseen recording interruptions and delays but at last, things have settled down enough for me to bring you this next installment, and I hope you find it an enjoyable one. It was my original intent to bring you guys another game today, but the outcomes were so random in the other game that I figured it's probably best to stick to something more within my control for now. Perhaps another day I shall attempt to present it, when I've worked up enough motivation to try again, for that other game is still very playable, it's just, very random and silly. For now, let us begin today's presentation in proper.I figured its about time we touched on a fighting game with proper stereo sound for the first time in this series, so I bring you Fate/unlimited code, which is a 2.5d 3-button fighter from capcom, the famous company that I've spoken of in previous posts. They've published and developed many more fighting games with stereo sounds beyond this one, but Fate/UC is a good game to start with, since it is relatively obscure. It was released first for the Playstation 2, then digitally as a budget title for the Playstation Portable on the psn store at around the start of the last deckade. It has since been delisted from the western stores, but it was apparently rereleased as a bundle alongside the Fate Extra RPG for the Playstation Vita in Japan. As for this game, it plays similarly to the Marvel VS Capcom 3 and infinite games, minus the tag mechanics, but it has enough stuff to make it stand on its own. Instead of the fourth button being used to tag, it is used to parry similarly to how it's done in Street Fighter 3. In fact, the bonus game you will hear at the end of the demo is quite similar in style to the bonus game featured in street fighter 3. Beyond that, you can use the light, medium and heavy attack buttons to string together combos and juggle your opponents similarly to how it is done in the Bleach fighting game series on the Ds, one of which I have already covered a few months earlier. The stereo effects and the excellent sound design in this particular game helps a great deal in knowing where you, projectiles, and your opponent are, and if you are familiar with your characters combos, it is possible to predict a coming launcher so that you are able to leap into the air to extend your combo further with a juggle. The game is fully voiced with plenty of cutscenes for each character in arcade mode, but sadly only in Japanese with english subtitles. Music for this game is great, and you can adjust both sfx and music, as well as other settings in options through sliders that do not wrap.I purchased Fate/UC way back in 2011 for 20 bucks if I remember correctly, an the game  kept my brother and me busy for a long time learning about all the characters and lore of the Fate universe. It was around that time that the Fate/stay night  anime series was becoming popular in the west, with an english dub for the anime available to watch. Not long after obtaining the game, we sat down one day to watch the movie, which I believe is called Fate/unlimited blades work, which did not have an english dub just yet, so my brother had to read the subtitles to me, and he did it like a champ for the whole 95 minutes that the movie lasted. Thankfully, there is a dub for that now if you wish to watch it yourself. One thing I really appreciate about Sony consoles is that they allow you to connect multiple home and portable devices to a single account. That  let my brother and I to share purchases and play with or against one another without having to spend too much money, so we took advantage of that, often fighting each  other in games such as this. I also appreciate that this game has tons of unlockable content, such as characters, movies, costumes and modes, and beyond the arcade mode, the missions and survival modes among others really help to extend its lasting value. This is truly a product of what I believe was the golden age of gaming, where what you paid for was a complete package, without any DLC to bog down the experience, where all of the additional content was obtained through however much time you were willing to dedicate to playing the game. In the demo below, I'll work my way through arcade mode with Saber and attempt to clear the game on a single credit, and I'll throw in an unlockable trailor as well. The demo is about 28 minutes long, so grab a snack of your choice, sit back, relax and enjoy the show.fate/unlimited codes audio demoThat brings us to the end of today's episode. Thank you

Re: how do you keep track of parentheses, brackets, etc

@3, I personally prefer putting the brace on the same line as the declaration, just because it filters out unnecessary things and is easier to read for me. But that's my preference.As for the question itself, I've seen some authors do this in their code -- it may help:while (cond) {
if (cond) {
// lots of opening braces here
} // if
} // if
} // while
} // for
// ...This might help you know when things begin and end. In languages like Ada, things like this are required, e.g.:procedure foo is
begin
if condition then
-- block
end if;
end foo;

Re: Free dev

Sable really needs to add scripting support, otherwise it will quickly suffer the fate of Audio Game Maker. Just my humble opinion. Game authoring tool that requires no coding = great. Game authoring tool which allows no coding = cookie cutter.If they added the ability to script new building blocks which the community could share with each other, that would make for an extremely powerful tool that could still be used by someone with no coding experience to great effect. Without it, I don't see how you can create a game that doesn't feel like a copy of the one before it.I really hope they decide to throw in Lua or something.

I mean, sure it gets old, but if I let things like that bother me on a regular basis, I would be kind of miserable.I haven't tried the game, and judging by what targor said I don't think it would really interest me, but hey, if there's something new and maybe innovative in there, then hats off to the dev all the same.Going a bit off topic here... but I feel like lately, old devs are trying old stale formulas, or new devs are trying new things which need polishing but never get it. I mean it's not a given, there are definitely exceptions, but yeah, and I'm generally really open to new games if I think the preface is interesting. But I'm really starting to feel how difficult it is for us as a community to make deep games for lack of a better word. But I'm not giving up hope, there are certainly many great games out there still and many to come.

@10Yeah, if you can't use the terminal this is a problem.  That's basically as bad practice as it is possible to get.Not sure if you're saying that it's your motivation, or why others do it.@11If you have 2 Python versions installed then it's possible pip is going to the wrong one; try python -m pip install lucia instead of pip install lucia and see if that fixes it.  It's also possible Lucia doesn't actually get imported as import lucia; the occasional package will do that, and I don't know lucia well enough to say if it's one that does.You should look into virtualenvs once you're a bit further along, then use them aggressively.

@30Sighted readers read upward of 100 easily.  this says that average for sighted people is around 200.  Speed readers, people who practice specifically to be fast readers, get upward of 300 or 400.  70-80 is slower than a fast talker can talk.This is another place where blind people have a blind spot, no pun intended.  Braile is objectively very, very slow.  It's fine if you don't care, but you should at least be aware of what you're deciding not to care about.

Yeah, I’ve gotten pretty far in the game and can tell you that it is getting harder and harder to remember what the customer wants because each dish has more and more to add the further you get. However, maybe have a three strikes you’re out rule. If you have the dish repeated three times in a row, you suffer a penalty of some sort. you get rewarded stars based on your performance, so maybe you suffer more of a blow the more you keep asking for a reminder of what the customer wants.

Re: What Hand Do You Read Braille With?

@26You're probably fine, and in the process of discovering that braille tops out around 60-70 words a minute at best, while synths top out around 700-800 words a minute, or even higher if you really put in the effort.Also, the only way to really get fast is to get super comfortable with contractions, whether you like them or not.  You can only move your finger so fast across the line while still feeling each symbol.  Same thing as compression on the network. You only get so many symbols/bytes/whatever per second.  Point of grade 2 is that grade 2 fits around twice the information (if not more) in the same amount of symbols.  But it takes literally years to master contractions, and it sounds like you didn't start with grade 2 young, which will hurt you a great deal.Braille is important and useful: it teaches spelling, formatting, etc.  Literacy provides a whole bunch of benefits if you learn it young, in terms of being able to work with symbolic information and things like that, that you can't get later.  But many of us leave it behind after high school or so, because synths just win.  For a lot of people, even normal human speaking is faster.  braille isn't even close to on par with print.  I'd say that most of the benefit is had from grade 1, and you personally are so close to the end of high school that it may not be worth going nuts trying to learn to be fast.Point being, don't feel bad about it and you're not so alone as you think.  Lots of the people who like braille are the same people who put up with things like Mac's slow synths, because that contingent often just doesn't value efficiency.  And before someone is like "that's unfair", it's not, because learning to be 800 words per minute with a synth is a skill that you have to actively practice and I at least understand why someone wouldn't want to spend a couple years on it if they didn't have to.

Re: Free dev

If you're serious about making a game, put that thirty bucks towards someone who might be willing to give you some tutoring in code. I personally wouldn't mind doing this, as long as you're serious about learning it.Unless your game is really small (like an old Dark Destroyer style space invaders clone) you're going to have a hard time finding someone to fulfill this request. COVID-19 increases your odds a little (since a lot of people are stuck at home looking for things to do), but the only way it's going to work out for you under this model is if the person who helps you strongly believes in your idea (and you basically give them the rights to your game after they create it).The other problem you'll have is fixing problems after release, which will inevitably come up. You won't be able to troubleshoot them yourself, and whomever created it for you will have moved on with their life and won't be able to help you anymore.So I'd like to extend to you what will likely be the best offer you will get under these conditions. If you seriously want to do this, which involves learning to code, you may send me an email. I can't teach you everything, but I can get you to the point where the instructional material you read online will make sense. That is if you are willing to make a time commitment to learning and practice on your own.

Braille has been easier since  I've  done this all my life. In fact,  I  can't  understand how it is a person could read Braille  with only  one  hand,  it's like  typing  through  hunt  and  peck.  It's unnatural to me, at least. I'd  recommend  the  two-hands  Braille  reading  style  if  anyone  who  is  serious  about  using  Braille  for  their reading wants to achieve fast reading speeds.

Re: Console Titles Other Than Fighting?

Yeah.. I don't think you can consider DMC 5 playable. I just looked at the topic and all its posts. Being able to get through the first couple missions doesn't make it playable. Almost playable, maybe. But noone ever posted about beating it, so this doesn't count imo. Samurai Warriors4 is playable,because I've beaten about 90% of the story. But that's also heavily action oriented and only voiced in Japanese as it was never dubbed.

Re: Big TalkBack changes

Does *anyone* have multi-finger gestures anymore? The blog post mentions them, and I have a Pixel 4A 5G, but no multi-finger gestures. The blog post mentions they're available on Pixel devices, and last week I was assured that a 4A 5G was a Pixel device (I wasn't sure if "Pixel" meant 3 or 4 only.)And before anyone asks, I did have them before. But the checkbox to enable them in the settings menu is now gone.

Re: Free dev

SO yeah, I guess if you want teenagers you might be able to get them to do it for free or for $30. But I'm almost certain the project will never get started. The kind of people with the talent and work ethic necessary would cost you about $30 per hour, not in total.@16, 17: The reason Sam won't help with this isn't because he does nothing for free, it's because there's no insentive at all. AnyAudio was free. Redspot was free. Survive the Wild is free, but it has a store that people spend money in. Sure, STW might've died a long time ago if it weren't for that, but it's also one of the most expansive and original games we have, and requires lots of work to properly administrate. You're going to be like, yeah but Redspot and Anyaudio went down a long time ago! Yes they did, and here we get to the actual point. Should people not be paid for work like that? Micro transactions are very normalized in mainstream games.
