Re: blindness and identity

Interesting point about singing Dark. I've often gotten amazed comments when I go out for karaoke about how I MUST! have some usable sight to be able to get all the words right when I sing a particular song. The fact that I'm usually not even facing the teleprompter doesn't seem to matter. Then I've noticed that sighted people tend to stumble, both in terms of words but also their timing, when they sing because they're so focused on the screen. I've actually had some friends of mine who were of the more sensible sort tell me that my lack of sight probably gives me more of an advantage in the karaoke arena.

Dark that attitude isn't uncommon here in the US as well. Jayde also has a point in that animals don't always realize right away that they might be seeing themselves in a reflective surface. A great example of this was the little COcker Spaniel puppy named Billy, whom my family adopted when I was about ten or so. Well one day my mom had indulged in some spring/summer cleaning and part of that involved washing the windows and the sliding glass door that led out to the back patio and yard. Not long afterward I was in the living room and heard Billy growling at something. COme to find out it was his own reflection in the sliding door. I think it took him a bit to figure out he was growling at himself.

LOL. Well that and trying to record a video audition for the one "Reality" TV show I remotely like, The Voice. Unfortunately I lack the equipment to record the sort of quality video they would want and so the trouble has been finding someone who does possess it. For those who don't know, The Voice is basically a singing competition where the top price is a recording contract and I believe there's cash involved as well. But after being told many times at Karaoke that I should try out I've decided that at the very least it could be a fun experience.

Ah yes, that old myth. My mother used to tell me that one when I was little. But even without drinking coffee for most of my life I'm rather small for a man at least by American standards, being only about 5'7 or so. In fact I only started drinking coffee within the last year or so, and I just turned 36 this June. But even when I do drink it it has to have creamer in it since I detest the taste of straight coffee, ironic really since I've always loved the smell of a freshly-brewed pot, as much because of its associations I suspect as the smell itself. The same holds true for popcorn but that's a whole nother story.

Re: Monthly chat May 2016

This is the first time I've contributed to one of these. Aside from my parents getting ready to sell their house and move into a camper trailer which they can tow all over the country, I've been thanking whatever higher power there might be that this year I didn't usher in the month of May with a kidney stone the way I did last year. LOL. And for those who've never had them they're just about the most excruciatingly painful things the human body can experience, at least that don't come from debilitating illnesses, torture or gruesome injury. In fact I've frequently heard that the kidney stone is the closest experience a man can have to the pain of giving birth. Having never given birth myself I'm not sure about that but it was pretty damn excruciating nonetheless.  But on a less painful note I find myself being torn between wishing I could afford to buy my parents' house and in so doing keep it in the family and on the other
hand being thankful that I can't. I'm not sure I would really want the responsibilities involved in having a house, especially since I'd have to hire someone for the upkeep of the yards at least. And my parents' property is fairly big, almost a full acre and the house itself is nothing to sneer at. It would be too big for just one person and since there's no Mrs. BryanP in the picture it would be overkill to say the least. But at least I got the grandfather clock. LOL.  I've also gotten a new laptop, new for me at any rate, and so getting used to Winblows 10. I've also been thinking of trying to get back into BGT again, but we shall see.

I think with me it's as much a financial issue as anything else. Here in the US if a person receiving SSI, let's say, gets married, they'll more tha likely lose some or all of that. This is even true of health insurance that covers necessary medical treatments. This happens even if the two of them together don't bring in enough to cover the cost of said treatments and/or food and other expenses. Granted my situation isn't that dire but I still can't afford to lose a cent of my SSI, which I would if I were to get married.

Re: a few complaints about the blind comunity

Nobodys saying only theblind community wants free stuff. Ive seen plenty of examples of sighted folks demanding it. But it is a very common demand for a lot of the blind people Ive met. The amusing ones are the ones wholl refuse to engage in activities unless they can get discounts based on their blindness, yet dont really admit that theyre blind. Ive known quite a lot of people like that. Theyre quite common in the area where I live, as are some of the more condesceding people I spoke of in one of m earlier post. but then again its somehting of a hotbed for the more raddical NFB-minded folks, and their extremist views. I tend to try not to demand things when I go out, even in situations where I might possibly be justified, simply because I dont want to perpetuate the bad reputation we have in some parts of the sighted world. A sighted person meets one rude, demanding blind person and theyre likely to as
sume were all like that and treat any future blind people they meet differently. I used to know and hang out with such a person whose answer to every perceived slight was to threaten to take the so-called offender to court and she expected me to be the same way. When the Twin Falls public library refused, understandably in my opinion, to allow her to put braille labels on the packaging of all the audiobooks, she called me up trying to get my support for her ridiculous plan to take the library to court for discrimination, never mind that if you ask nicely for help finding a specific book the library staff are more than happy to help you. I pointed that out as well as the fact that not only blind people listen to audiobooks and so there would be absolutely no guarantee that that braille label would still be there the next time a sighted listen checked the book back in. So Marie would have had to replace labels and would inevitably have gotten bent out of shape about that.

Re: a few complaints about the blind comunity

Did I refer to myself as a saint? I dont think so. And as a matter of fact I generally try not to do the horrible things I accuse the rest of you of, precisely because that would be hypocritical. Im not saying I never slip up, but as far as talking down to those who are less self-sufficient thats one thing I dont do if I can help it precisely because Ive had it done to me and know how it feels. So your attack is entirely uncalled for.

Its not for sale. I may well give it a try since I tend to prefer to hear a girls voice rather than just text.

Re: How much does spelling matter

It would also help if people learn the correct way to use certain words. I particularly notice this with words like affect and effect. People say that something effects something else when the correct word in that situation would actually be affect, with an A. Affect is the verb while effect is a noun, the effects of the decision. Then of course people confuse words all the time like since and sennse, then and than or due and do. Do to a technical difficulty is incorrect. The correct word there would be due, D U E. Then you get people who say more then instead of more than, could of instead of could have and so-on. Then of course theres the whole to and too thhing, where people say its to late instead of its too late. Ill be the first to admit that my own posts arent always cleanly typed since Ill often miss letters in words (which has actually led to some pretty amusing if also embarrassing misunderstandings), but I at least make the effort to m
ake sure that overall my posts are coherent. Part of it may be that I use a Britishh speach synthesizer despite not being a Brit myself. But I have found that it helps me catch words that I might not otherwise have caught, words that in an American accent might sound like they have Ds in them but are actually spelled with Ts. It also helps me catch words like Due or Do since the British synthe sort of pronounces the U. The irony of course is that its not just the blind who make these mistakes. The thing that really gets to me though and constantly sets my teeth on edge is that textspeak or netspeak crap people use nowadays. Of course I say nowadays but its actually been in use for at least the last ten years. Im not talking about things like LOL, BTW or BRB since those make remote sense. I mean things like u instead of y, 2 instead of to, that sort of nonsense.

Well this is interesting. Only problemis the only place I mee people with any consistency is a Karaoke bar I go to as frequently as finances allow. And as a general rule one should never go to a bar to meet women or men. This isnt to say that some happy, lasting unions havent started at the bar, but I know myself and the kind of women who seem to be drawn to me.

Exactly. One thing I always heard my ex talk about was how her pastor kept stressing the fact that there were going to be people in Heaven whom one would definitely not expect to see there, while people whom one would expect to see in eHeaven were going to end up in Hell simply because they either didnt believe the correct beliefs or did one thing that, while maybe fairly minor in te s of most people, wasan afront to god. All I nowis if Phillip Garrido and Ariel Castro end up in Heaven I wouldnt want to go there.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=177879#p177879

Re: a code behind the bible

I came to my Agnosticism precisely through studying the Bible and realizing what a petty, genocidal tyrant its god really was. I also cant respect a deity who loves his creations but condemns them to eternal fiery torment simply because they believe in a different being, even if in all other ways they lived decent, honest lives. I could perhaps accept the Deistic notion of a god who created everything and set all the laws of the universe in motion in the beginning before stepping back to allow things to unfold however they might. But anything else is just too farfetched for me.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=177485#p177485

Re: a code behind the bible

I tried the whole Christianity thing when I was younger, but aside from all the contradicitons I couldnt reconcile the notion of a loving, merciful god with the one depicted particularly in the Old Testament. He is most assuredly not merciful. In fact I find him to be even more of a petty, inconsistent tyrant than the Greek gods and goddesses were. Then of course the fact that Christianity borrows events from other religions. Even Greek mythology had its flood story. I wont even start on the holidays Christianity stole from Pagan religions. Even the cross was originally a Pagan symbol before it was stolen by Christianity.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=176947#p176947
