Re: Google capchas Yeah, the ones with background noise could be gotten with some careful listening, but the ones with garbled voices were just as bad if not worse than the video captcha.If you really feel the need for a captcha, the best approach I've seen is a text captcha that can only be seen by a screen reader because the background and text were both the same color. It could be put on the page right next to the captcha so it created a captcha that could be solved by pretty much anyone. I just use the MVPS hosts file from MVPS.org, and I get no ads, and the nice thing about it is that it works with all browsers because it blocks the ads at the TCP/IIP protocol driver. No additional software to slow down your browser is needed, assuming the software even supports your choice of browser in the first place. It simply uses a feature that's been built into the protocol driver since Windows 95 and probably earlier. Re: A shocking and depressing news! I don't know about shocking but having to lose parts of your body even though they don't function is always best avoided. Besides being depressing, removing any part of the body, even if it is replaced with a prosthetic, creates a way for infection to enter the body.It's bad enough when you have no control over the situation, it's even worse when it's from someone else actions or lack of action.I was diagnosed with glaucoma in 1997 and at that time all that was needed to keep my eye pressures under control was eye drops. Later I moved to Chicago to accept a job and had to find a new eye doctor to keep an eye on my eyes and advise me if the glaucoma ever needed more attention than just the eye drops. At the time I was told to be sure I hooked up with an opthamologist and not an optometrist. I didn't know anyone specialized in glaucoma or I would have looked for such a specialist, instead I found an opthamologist. What a mistake! In 2006, my eye pressures started becoming difficult to control but my eye doctor never bothered to tell me that or that the pressure was damaging the optic nerve until I could see the effects it was having on my vision in 2010. By then it was too late to do anything, the eye pressure and glaucoma had become so aggressive that no matter what surgeries they performed, nothing could stop the gradual deterioration of my vision. In 2012 I was declared legally blind and started using Zoom Text, then in late 2013 I started using a long white cane to get around and bought JAWS so I could use my computer.The reason the eye doctor didn't warn me? Through him I found out that there were specialists that focused on different eye diseases including glaucoma and knew that if I ever found out my eye pressures were out of control that I'd leave him for a glaucoma specialist and he didn't want to lose me as a patient. I haven't had to have anything as drastic as having an ey eball removed, but I did lose my vision because of a doctor's greed over not wanting me to leave him for another doctor. Unfortunately, by the time I found out the truth of what he had done, the two year statute of limitations on medical malpractice had passed, so I couldn't do anything to him legally. I did file a complaint with the Illinois medical board, but they apparently didn't do anything to him because he's still practicing medicine. It's never their incompetence, carelessness, stupidity, greed, or just plain old not giving a shit, as long as it's not happening to them or their family.My current, but not for long, primary care physician prescribes medications without first referring to your records to see what you might already be taking, first he tried to add a medication to my regimin, then when he found out he had already prescribed it, he tried to increase the dosage only to find I was already taking that dosage at his instruction! Now I have pain in my left arm and sholder that's slowly spreading and getting worse and all he does is claim that one of my medications is causing it and then offers to prescribe pain killers.I am now looking for a new primary care physician and will be reporting this idiot to the Florida medical board. I'm pretty sure that prescribing medications without referring to a patients medical records is a violation of their accepted practices. Victor Reader Stream gets a new big brother Those of you who follow the Blind Bargains podcast will know about this already, so I'm posting this for those who don't.Humanware has announced the Victor Reader Trek. It's a blending of the Victor Reader Stream with a Trekker Breeze Plus into a single device that looks like a Victor Reader Stream except that it is about 25% thicker to make room for the GPS.No, it's not the same GPS chip the Trekker Breeze Plus used but a newer chip that picks up the satelites faster and can more accurately set your position, within 10 feet or 3 meters so they say.It will have all the functions of the Victor Reader Stream plus all the functions of the Trekker Breeze Plus, plus several new features that both Victor Reader Stream and Trekker Breeze Plus users have been asking for for the past couple of years.Probably the most prominent new feature will be the addition of Blue Tooth connectivity for output to speakers or headphones.The microphon e jack is gone to make room for the GPS so the headphone jack now accepts headsets as well as headphones, same for Blue Tooth as well.They have also changed their map supplier. I don't know who they were using for the Trekker Breeze, but for the Victor Reader Trek they will be using maps from TomTom, one advantage this will generate is that instead of having the United States broken up into sections where you could only load 4 sections on the Trekker Breeze, the entire United States will be loaded. There are more than likely similar map expansions for other parts of the world as well, though they didn't mention them.The current Victor Reader Stream has 8 GB of storage built in, the Victor Reader Trek will have 32 GB, some of which will be needed for the GPS system data and map.The Victor Reader Stream will continue to be sold and supported, the Victor Reader Trek isn't replacing it, it is just joining the Victor Reader family of products.Th e normal price of the Victor Reader Trek will be 699 US dollars, but is being sold at the preorder price of 599 US dollars until the end of the year. I have absolutely no confidence that I could safely cross a major thoroughfare. So I'm limited to places I can get to while crossing only relatively quiet residencial streets.The apartment community I live in is just behind a shopping center with a bunch of stores in it including a grocery store.I figure that with Galileo's 1 foot accuracy I could stand in front of a store I want to find again and bookmark it, then be able to return to that bookmark later and be at that same store again.If I need to go somewhere on the other side of a major thoroughfare, I'll just call a cab and get door to door service. In those cases, I can use the GPS to make sure the cabbie doesn't go a wandering to jack up the fare.I had one cabbie do that to me to the tune of about $15, I don't use that cab company any more and now always have my Trekker Breeze with me when I do take a cab.Even without Galileo the newer and hopefully better GPS chip they are using will be a plus. If you have proof, you might be able to complain that somebody pulled a quick swap on you, probably thinking that a blind or visually impaired person isn't going to notice.@akseI don't know about virtual box, but with VMWare you have to set up the virtual machine's network to share host drives. You can make the shares permanent so they always show up when the virtual machine is running, or make them temporary for just the one session. Even if your laptop has separate memory for video, because 32 bit systems can only access 4 GB of memory, some of it will be set aside so that the video memory can be accessed. To you it will look like you have only 3.5 GB of memory or something similar. For one thing, since the OCR function in Reader is done right on your device, I'll use it when scanning something like my mail. But for something with no personal data this app will do nicely. Besides all the spying and screen reader unfriendly apps, Microsoft has taken control of some parts of the computer away from the owners and given it to themselves.For example, in Windows 7 Home Premium I have the ability to reject certain updates if I find I don't like the effect they have on my system, but with Windows 10 you have to get at least the Pro edition to keep that ability, in the Home edition, you automatically accept all updates Microsoft deems as important.I will upgrade to Windows 10 only when I have to buy a new computer, and even then, I'll look for a second hand computer in excellent condition that can run Windows 7 first.In my opinion, despite all its new features, Windows 10 is a step backwards instead of a step forward. Re: New app for picture and document recognisation, seeing AI by Microsoft All I have done with this app so far was just fooling around with it so I'd know what to do and expect when it came time to put it to real world use.Today I got that chance when I needed to identify some Boar's Head sandwiches I had just bought at Publix, a grocery store in this area.First I tried using my ID Mate Galaxy and wasn't surprised when it couldn't identify them because a year ago Envision America said that Publix was no longer sharing product information with them.So I grabbed my iPhone and gave this app a try in its short text mode. It didn't take long to find where on the package the sandwich description was and I soon had them all identified.Because my primary tool for sorting groceries after bringing them home is the ID Mate, I rescan the sandwiches and when it couldn't identify them, it offered to let me record their description. Now, for future use, the ID Mate can identify these sandwiches.Neat app Microsoft! I've tried a number of apps that claim to do real time OCR scanning of text, and they were always disappointing. This is the first app that actually worked well enough to be helpful. But from the time before I lost my sight, the standard has always been no zoom, or normal, or 100%, depending on which terminology floats your boat, they are all the same.When I first started using the internet in 1996 or 7 I used Netscape, but between versions 4.5 and 5 it got really buggy so when I switched from the Windows 9x series to Windows NT with Windows 2000 Pro when it was released in 2000, I also switched from Netscape to Internet Explorer.Between then and now I've played with other browsers like Firefox, Netscape, and Opera, , but always went back to Internet Explorer because of its integration into Windows and how easy it was to manage. Internet Explorer has its own favorites manager just like Firefox has its bookmarks manager, but you can also use any Windows file manager to manage your favorites including Windows Explorer or File E xplorer under Windows 10. You just can't beat that kind of flexibility or simplicity. If it is, the metal cover over the micro SD card should slide down without too much force, then hinge up with no force at all allowing you to remove the micro SD card. You shouldn't have to worry about the orientation of the micro SD card because it will fit into the socket only one way.Then you should be able to put the micro SD card in a reader and see everything that's on it.Sounds easy enough to do, but I'm not going to touch my Stream. Once installed on your computer, they are harder to get rid of than the viruses they're supposed to protect against.@dracI don't recall, probably Google Chrome and a Google toolbar for Internet Explorer, or something like those, and yes they offer an opt out, but as I recall they weren't readily accessible, I had to change to object browsing to get to the controls to uncheck them. On the way home it thought I was turned around and going back to the far end of my trip and kept telling me to turn around because I was off course. I eventually turned it off and finished walking home without it.I don't know what caused the problem and just chalk it up to lack of experience with it, because the problem was never repeated.Your location may have a lot to do with it's performance, I live in the United States and even before I lost my vision I noticed that maps in GPS systems, for most of the rest of the world were sorely lacking in detail. I just learned a lesson, do not do the voice training in the Alexa app. For most of a week, my Echo has been flawless, then I decided to improve its interpretation of my voice so I did a couple of voice training sessions with it.In each of these sessions you are asked to say 25 sentences to the Echo in your normal voice and the way you would normaly talk.After doing this voice training my Echo now barely understands me. I now have to repeat things to it several times before it gets it right. Even worse, according to Amazon, there is no way to undo the effects of the voice training except to do a master reset to restore the Echo to its factory default condition, which means you have to go through all the set up you've already done including enabling all the skills you enabled and re setting them up if they had to be set up before use.
