Re: Using Chrome OS Without a Monitor?
Re: Using Chrome OS Without a Monitor? Things might be different now, but my 2006 Mac Mini would go busy a lot more with VoiceOver running. Hmmm, I may have to use my fit-headless HDMI adapter if I get this. I want to try Chrome OS, but I don't really want another laptop with another battery that will go bad in 2-3 years and be very difficult if not impossible to replace. Using Chrome OS Without a Monitor?
Using Chrome OS Without a Monitor? I found the Asus Chromebox 4 for $285 and think it would be a good way to dip my toe into the Chrome OS world in order to learn it and stay up to date with future developments for the next 6-7 years or so. Can I use Chrome OS and ChromeVox without a monitor connected to the computer or will it have a hissyfit like Mac Minis? I thought I could use the Raspberry Pi without a monitor and learned the hard way I can't, at least with Raspberry Pi OS. Re: Corona Virus: is it the beginning of the end? I know exactly why Accman gave up. You and every other leftist will never budge. You've all swallowed the lies that Trump and his supporters are horrible totalitarian monsters, global warming is real, protests are okay as long as they're not white people participating, etc, etc, etc. Why is the wonderful Biden releasing illegal aliens who test positive for the extremely dangerous virus into Texas without quarantining them? Why is it okay for BLM to riot and loot without wearing masks? Everyone has to wear a mask, right? Oh wait, that's just Americans. Illegal aliens and other minorities can do whatever they want, damn the consequences. hypocrisy and projection, that's all it is.That capitol protest wasn't meant to be violent, but are you shocked that the left would use this opportunity to fuel Trump Derangement Syndrome even more? Did you miss the video that Trump released telling people to go home in peace? Oh wait, I'm pretty sure it was taken down because that's not the image the left wants to show. They say this is a terrorist attack? What about all the riots which did far more damage that were ultimately ignored? Come on, man! Oh hell, what's the point anymore? Re: Corona Virus: is it the beginning of the end?
Re: Corona Virus: is it the beginning of the end? Our great mentally incompetent I mean perfectly functioning president who was absolutely fairly elected and absolutely isn't a criminal has nothing to add to fighting COVID except for the great idea to fight the virus by wearing another mask on top of the first? Huh? The virus will just go through two masks and the carbon dioxide poisoning will continue. I wish people would wake up! This stupidity has been going on for almost a year now. How long is it going to take for enough of the population to say enough is enough? Will it be 5 years? 10? Never? I'm not taking a vaccine either. I'm healthy, and if I do catch the virus, I'll do what normal people do and isolate myself from the public until I'm better. Isolating perfectly healthy people makes no rational sense. We keep the sick away from everyone until they're better. If the virus mutates, it mutates. This is how viruses work. This is why I don't go very many places, especially now. If you're terrified of the virus, wear a mask if you truly think it helps, but don't force everyone else to. If you think I have the virus, stay away from me if you're that terrified. If you're so afraid you'll die, don't go anywhere or hey, why not wear a hazmat suit. This is as bad as the zombie plague! Aaaa! Common sense is not so common and this is what the left loves! Is the Corona Virus the beginning of the end of freedom? Absolutely! If people allow this nonsense to continue, what else will they allow the government to do? It's already been established that you can't say there was election fraud, which is by very definition what a totalitarian government would do. How long will it be before people are shot on sight for not wearing a mask? How long will it be before they say you can't go anywhere if you don't have the vaccine? I wouldn't mind that personally. Re: I am affronted by the presence of god
Re: I am affronted by the presence of god I've come to the ultimate conclusion that it's a bunch of shit primarily designed to comfort people into believing there's something after death. Magic isn't real, and it still isn't no matter how hard I wish it was to make this boring world much less so. As for God being the ultimate benevolent being? No way! A truly benevolent God wouldn't allow evil people to get away with stealing presidential elections in the greatest country on the planet, allow babies to die due to birth defects or other issues, stand by while the Jews were massacred, etc.Religion brainwashes people, and while it's not as harmful as other forms of brainwashing, it's still a form of brainwashing in my view. Accept God or you will burn in the lake of fire for all time! Yeah, that's a really compelling reason to worship God. Not! Oh, what's up with all this lord and servant bullshit? I'm not a servant to anyone and would rather die before I become one. If God is truly benevolent, he/she/it will accept anyone regardless of whether they believe or not. Until you can prove to me that magic exists, I'm not taking this stuff seriously. As for dying, we'll see what happens. The more I think about it, the more I think there's nothing. There was obviously a time before when I didn't exist, and I have no memory of that, so presumably there will come a time when I cease to exist as well and I won't know or care. Perhaps we're all doomed to wander the Earth as ghosts, or maybe this crap is real (highly unlikely). If it is, I've got a lot of questions for the almighty bastard. Re: Big TalkBack changes
Re: Big TalkBack changes I wouldn't get a device running Android 8 at this point. Try getting something with at least Android 10 or 11. As for the TalkBack changes, they're long overdue. Where's the update for BrailleBack?I keep wanting to try Android, but many things piss me off, including the really slow progress of TalkBack and BrailleBack development, the lack of long-term software support, and the major pain in the ass of installing custom ROMS. I like the idea of the platform, I really do. However, it's way too fragmented and installing TalkBack on devices or ROMS that don't come with it preinstalled is a bitch. Re: Leviathan Chronicles directors cut I just checked and it appears they're working on something called The Rapscallion Agency which is about Lisette and her boyfriend from season 3. They're also working on another special episode called The Code which covers Jason Sterling's backstory. Unfortunately, the Kickstarter campaign is over, but I'll definitely be purchasing this stuff when it comes out on their website. I wish I had been made aware of the Kickstarter campaign earlier, but oh well. Re: Leviathan Chronicles directors cut
Re: Leviathan Chronicles directors cut If you want to purchase everything Leviathan has to offer, check out this bundle. It's a bit expensive, but worth every penny if you love the series like I do.https://www.leviathanchronicles.com/shop/big-magilla/Based off what I can gather, you won't receive advertisements and there are a few additional scenes in season 2 and 3. I've also been told the season 1 director's Cut includes the soapbox episodes and a few of the mini episodes that used to be on the podcast feed. Unfortunately, I purchased seasons 1 and 2 in 2016, so I don't have these episodes. I'd rather not purchase the same content again, so I'm okay with just having the complete story. It's very much worth it in my view and I hope there's more to come, since season 3 left some things unresolved. Re: windows update blue screen of death! Go to https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/softwar … /windows10 and download the Media Creation Tool by choosing the Download Tool button. Run the file and when it asks what you want to do, choose the upgrade this PC option. It will download the latest version of Windows 10 and install it, preserving your files and settings. This is what an in-place upgrade means as opposed to a clean install which erases everything. If this doesn't fix your issue, there's something fundamentally wrong with your Windows installation and it seriously would be best to perform a clean install, either by yourself or with the assistance of someone more knowledgeable. I know you don't want to do a clean installation, but if the issue is that serious, you might as well skip band-aid solutions and take the extra time and effort to make sure things are working correctly. If this doesn't fix your issue, there's something wrong with your Windows installation and it seriously would be best to perform a clean install, either by yourself or with the assistance of someone more knowledgeable. Re: windows update blue screen of death!
Re: windows update blue screen of death! I've never had problems with Windows Update. Then again, I regularly clean install Windows to avoid weird issues such as these. If you've had your computer for a couple years, it's not a bad idea to go in and do a fresh install. It will allow you to start from a clean slate and will more than likely improve the speed of your computer overall. Re: windows update blue screen of death!
Re: windows update blue screen of death! Reinstalling Windows from scratch is easy provided you know what you're doing. You shouldn't have to enter the BIOS to boot from a Windows install drive. Repeatedly press the boot menu key for your specific manufacturer when you turn on your computer. This should take you to a menu to select the boot device. Usually pressing down arrow once or twice and then hitting enter will make your machine boot from USB or DVD. After that, run Narrator with Control Windows Enter to independently setup Windows. Dell usesF12, HP tends to use F9, Asus uses Escape, etc. You'll have to check with the specific manufacturer you have as I said earlier if the above doesn't work. Re: what should we do if the forum, Whent down with out any warning? There's a reason I don't use social media. They all use awful web interfaces that are very clunky. Everything is moving to Electron or is on the web. No one wants to make native GUI applications anymore because of all this cross-platform stuff. No one wants to expose their APIs so people with the knowledge can make interfaces that would actually make the experience pleasant and efficient for a blind person. Sure, the web can be made very accessible, but these companies aren't totally invested in making the experience work for blind people.A mailing list could work, but it would become very unmanageable very quickly. The only alternative that makes things a little more bearable are mobile apps, but I'm not on mobile 24/7. I like my keyboard and desktop interface. This "touch screen mobile devices are awesome" bullshit pisses me off! There are cool devices like the GPD Win that run Windows, but then you're back to the same problems as listed above. Re: How do I Disable Intel Rapid Storage Technology
Re: How do I Disable Intel Rapid Storage Technology Yeah, why is RAID enabled on a single hard drive? That's beyond stupid! If you're going to install Linux, I'd erase the entire drive and use it exclusively with Linux. I haven't had much luck running Windows and Linux on the same drive or even multiple drives. The last time I tried installing to a secondary drive on a desktop, it refused to boot and I had to completely reformat the drive. Fortunately, the primary hard drive with Windows wasn't impacted. Perhaps I simply don't know what I'm doing, but IMHO it's better to either run Linux in a virtual machine or by itself on a computer. Re: What to read after reading Harry Potter and Percy Jackson?
Re: What to read after reading Harry Potter and Percy Jackson? American Gods was horrible! I wish I hadn't wasted the time on that book. Maybe it wasn't my cup of tea. I thought it would get better as it progressed, but it really didn't.Gaiman is really interesting otherwise. Check out Coraline. It's very very creepy. It's about a girl who wanders into another world and is trapped by a demon pretending to be her mother. The Ocean at the End of the Lane is pretty good as well, though I'm a little confused by the ending. I haven't tried Stardust as of yet. I also read The Graveyard book about 10 years ago. It wasn't too bad, but Coraline and Ocean were better. You might like Kelley Armstrong. I started with her Darkest Powers and Darkness Rising books which are about a group of kids with supernatural powers who are initially placed in a group home and diagnosed with various disorders. They eventually find out they aren't crazy and have extremely boosted powers. They go on the run and are hunted by a cabal. After that, I checked out her Women of the Otherworld series which was pretty good as well. It's aimed more at adults but gives a much deeper look at her supernatural world. Darkest Powers and Darkness Rising tie into this larger story. Here's one more, but it's definitely aimed at adults. It's the Cassandra Palmer series by Karen Chance. It's about a young woman who was raised by vampires. She's a clairvoyant and the vampire that raised her used her abilities to make a lot of money. She's also a necromancer and can talk to ghosts. She also gains the ability to time travel. It's essentially about her adventures with ghosts, vampires, mages, demons, and gods. There are lots of sex scenes in these, hence why these might not be for everyone. I started reading these at the age of 12, so I don't know what that says about me. I'd like to think it makes me a more mature person, because I handled it just fine. The series starts to drag around book 6, but I still like it.Okay, one more, and I'm serious this time. If you haven't checked out His Dark Materials, it's worth it in my view. I loved it as a little kid, primarily because of all the worlds. People hate it because it was written by an atheist and is about killing a tyrannical god, but I liked the fantasy elements. Philip Pullman also came out with The Book of Dust series, but based off what I've heard, it probably wouldn't interest me. I don't think it contains the same kind of fantasy elements. It's essentially about her adventures with ghosts, vampires, mages, and gods. There are lots of sex scenes in these, hence why these might not be for everyone. I started reading these at the age of 12, so I don't know what that says about me. I'd like to think it makes me a more mature person, because I handled it just fine. The series starts to drag around book 6, but I still like it. Re: What to read after reading Harry Potter and Percy Jackson? The Iron Druid Chronicles is great! The only thing that irritated me was the slight PC bullshit about the world being destroyed by pollution and how we should all stop. I lump this into the global warming is a load of crap bin. Virtue signaling at its finest. If you can ignore that, it's a great series. Sadly, virtue signaling and political correctness are all too common in all forms of modern entertainment. I don't want your views on topic X, I just want to enjoy a nice fantasy story and get away from the real world. Ugh! Re: What to read after reading Harry Potter and Percy Jackson?
Re: What to read after reading Harry Potter and Percy Jackson? You might like Skulduggery Pleasant. I personally think it blows Harry Potter and Percy Jackson out of the water! It's about a living skeleton who teams up with a 12-year old girl called Stephanie Edgley. They're mainly trying to keep evil sorcerers and gods from destroying the world. I recommend checking out the first 3 books just to see how you like it. It combines humor, mystery, and fantasy very nicely, and the books get better as you progress. The first 9 books are awesome! The newer books are okay as long as you ignore the political correctness bullshit Derek Landy shoehorns. The Young Wizards series by Diane Duane isn't bad either. I've gone through the first 9 books and am trying to decide if I want to read 10. Re: Is it worth it to do a clean install of windows with a new laptop?
Re: Is it worth it to do a clean install of windows with a new laptop? I recommend using a USB drive with the Windows installer. The reset options use existing files on your computer and may not give you the best clean install experience if something is seriously broken. Download the Media Creation Tool and use it to create a bootable USB device. Boot from that and follow the prompts, erasing your entire boot drive along the way.You shouldn't need to enter a product key if your computer is new enough. Starting with Windows 8, the license information is built into the BIOS, so the installer should detect it automatically and proceed. If not, select the correct edition of Windows that your computer was running. Once you connect to the Internet, it should automatically activate. You can check this by going to Settings>Update&Security>Activation. If it's still not activated, get a sighted person to read the product key printed on your computer. Enter this and it should activate Windows and associate the license with your hardware. If you perform clean installs in the future, you won't have to enter the product key because it will automatically activate when you connect to the Internet. Finally, it's worth noting that you can activate Windows with Windows 7 or 8.x product keys. Just senter the product key and it should activate. It's very useful for upgrading old computers that came with Windows 7 to a properly activated Windows 10 system. Re: I have a big problem with Twitter. Any alternatives? I don't know why I'm trying this again, because it hasn't worked before. I do, however, have a question. How do seemingly otherwise sane and rational people go completely batshit insane over things like COVID and Donald Trump? That's a serious question and I really want to know.As far as I can gather, Trump wasn't inciting violence. He even posted a video telling everyone to go home peacefully, but of course the media doesn't want to put that out there in order to bolster their image that he's a monster and Joe Biden was fairly elected and nothing's wrong. Come on, do you seriously think that senile old fool was fairly elected? Seriously? The left has no problem allowing BLM to riot, but they turn around and say it's horrifying when a bunch of American patriots arrive at the capital to hopefully put a stop to this massive fraud? I've also read it was a peaceful protest, but it wouldn't surprise me if BLM was planted in order to throw a monkey wrench into everything in order to twist it in the left's favor. People are evil, and they can and will do things because they want power. People are more than capable of lying and twisting events to fit their purposes. Both Republicans and Democrats are guilty of this and everyone has abandoned Trump except supporters like myself. I will never give up my support of Donald Trump or his ideas to make the country better. Oh wait, building a wall to keep our country safe from criminal illegals, bolstering the military, making us energy independent, getting rid of ISIS, and many other things are apparently really really bad according to the left. Huh? The hypocrisy is sickening! There's one set of rules for them, and another for us? What?I'm terrified this great nation will turn into another totalitarian hellhole. Most of the population is already convinced COVID is the same as the zombie plague, and the ridiculous power hungry policies will only get worse with Biden. Never mind there's a 99% survival rate and if you're really that terrified or you are truly at risk, just stay home and don't go anywhere. What kind of circular logic is involved in quarantining people who aren't sick? I thought it was supposed to be the opposite philosophy? Let's keep the infected away from the population until they get better. The greatest country in the world is crumbling and the feeling of helplessness gets stronger with each hour. Re: can you tell me more about chrome os? Most people don't need super fast processors and 16 GB or more RAM if all they plan to do is access Facebook, read emails, watch Netflix, or play web games. The great thing about the Internet is most of the heavy lifting is done on someone else's computer, not your own. As I said before, the idea behind Chrome OS is brilliant! Give people an affordable conduit to the Internet. That's all people want. Post 18 is absolutely correct. Re: Lets use MacOSX10.6 for 7 days as a daily driver
Re: Lets use MacOSX10.6 for 7 days as a daily driver You may have to use an audio cable connected to the headphone jack or connect a USB audio device. Snow Leopard was good for its time, but just like everything else, the Internet has moved on. You can still run offline programs just fine, but expect the online experience to not work well or at all, depending on what websites you choose to visit. I've also heard that the Mail app doesn't support email accounts anymore. Re: Lets use MacOSX10.6 for 7 days as a daily driver
Re: Lets use MacOSX10.6 for 7 days as a daily driver I love Snow Leopard! Sadly, you're most likely stuck using offline applications. Safari 5 is ancient, and Firefox has never been accessible for VoiceOver users. I assume this extends to any other forks such as the two you described. Re: online backup salutions
Re: online backup salutions Run a test on your Internet connection using www.speedtest.net and divide the upload number it gives you by 8. This will determine how much data you can send to the Internet per second. If it's really low and you have a bunch of data to backup, don't bother. It will take forever. If possible, you'll want to use a cable to connect as it will be much faster than Wi-Fi.As for services, I've heard Backblaze works. If you don't have a whole lot of data you need to have backed up, you could always use something like Google Drive's 15 GB of storage. Make multiple accounts and you'll get more free storage. If you're concerned about the security of cloud backups, either encrypt your files or don't put them on someone else's computer. Re: Curious about the Book Port Plus / Plextalk Connecting a keyboard to my Book Port Plus results in it saying "unsupported USB device". If I hit the up and down arrows, it changes the speed. Pressing the Windows key makes the device completely unresponsive. None of the buttons work and it doesn't talk to me. In order to restore functionality, I have to remove the battery and reboot it. I assume I'm in another part of Windows CE at this point? The problem is you're stuck without a screen reader. I wonder how the folks at APH programmed the thing if most of them are blind? Then again, they know much more about how it works. Is there anything I can do? Can I enable Telnet somehow? I don't really want to hack the device, because I'm not a programmer and if something got seriously broken, I wouldn't be able to restore the software. I'm mainly curious about the system resources such as CPU, RAM, and internal storage capacity. Re: Curious about the Book Port Plus / Plextalk
Re: Curious about the Book Port Plus / Plextalk I have a Book Port Plus and I'm disappointed the software support was dropped so quickly. I liked the idea of the Wi-Fi, but it's ridiculously slow. They're using 802.11 G, and I imagine that combined with a very slow CPU made for really slow download performance. Don't transfer files to the device using the network folder mode unless you want to wait forever. The fastest I've ever managed to get something to transfer at was 300 to 500 KBps.APH also released a buggy software update to support NLS BARD, Bookshare, their own magazine service, and Open Library. The device constantly locked up or failed to download content, and they never fixed it. They also charged me $29 for this shit, which I'm still pissed off about. I will never purchase another APH product. What are the device specifications? Is it a single-core CPU running slower than 1 GHz? How much RAM and storage does it have? Raspberry Pi OS keyboard shortcuts Hi all,I'm playing with Raspberry Pi OS and Orca, but I can't figure out how to get to certain parts of the system. How do I access the menus for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth or set focus to the desktop? The only thing I can do is press the Windows key to open the menu, open programs, close them, and navigate menus. Re: Air Pods max/me likey/kind of want
Re: Air Pods max/me likey/kind of want How well does transparency mode really work? Last I checked, Bluetooth microphones sound horrible because the headphones have to switch to the lower quality mono HSP mode while using the microphone. A2DP stereo mode only works when the microphone is not in use. Wouldn't you get extremely low quality mono ambient sound? Re: Mass blocking of Facebook accounts
Re: Mass blocking of Facebook accounts There's not too much you can do aside from leaving Facebook behind. If you did something they didn't like or were included in a block of IP addresses where someone else did it, that's it. If you shared a post going against the current narrative that COVID is extremely dangerous, or you support Donald Trump, or did any number of other things they don't like, that's grounds for getting blocked according to them. Those who really want to contact you will find other ways to do so. Facebook is not essential when there are literally dozens of other ways to keep in touch. They quit being a free speech platform as soon as they started becoming a publisher by arbitrarily deciding what they will and will not allow on their platform. I wonder how long it'll be until your phone company decides to disconnect calls because you're talking with someone about Trump or COVID in a manner they don't like? That's essentially what Facebook and Twitter are doing now. Re: I got a new pc!
Re: I got a new pc! Post 70 is very interesting. I agree that I3 CPUs aren't bad. I have a machine with an I3-2100 and it works fine. I've always found Celerons to be ridiculously slow, but maybe it has to do with platter hard drives, slower RAM, or maybe the patches in Windows 10.I've also found that computers made in 2008 or earlier may or may not run Windows 10 well. My dad found an HP laptop in the trash with an AMD CPU and it ran Windows 10 like absolute garbage! I forget the processor model off the top of my head, but it had 4 GB DDR2 RAM at 667 MHz and a 200 GB platter drive. I even tried running Linux and it still ran like crap. I don't know how much of that was due to the age of the processor, slow RAM, the fact the machine didn't have an SSD, or the Meltdown patches. Either way, it was absolute crap!Windows 10 can run quite well with 4 GB RAM, but I recommend a minimum of 8 GB nowadays. You'll also want an SSD. The difference between an SSD and a platter drive is night and day. Once you go SSD, you'll never want to go back. You don't need ridiculously powerful processors and high amounts of RAM unless what you're doing warrants it. Something like an I3 with 8 GB RAM and a 128 or 256 GB SSD will work for the vast majority of people.
