@166Sounds great, the underwater and radio filters are perfect. I see you added a pitch modification for fun, sounds good as long as it was on purpose!Optimisation is good - it's not a strong enough effect though. Try moving your second band from 2,500Hz to 4,000Hz and raising the DB just slightly. The band width is perfect. Also you'll notice - I still have quite a few plosive sounds that are causing a problem. You can take care of this by moving band 1 up just 20Hz. Band 1 is almost perfect and if I didn't purposefully hit those P sounds so hard, it would've been fine, but experiment with just moving it a tiny bit to see if it has a difference. I will say, really tight optimisation going on. You are using a very light touch which is exactly what we're going for - a little bit goes a long way. It just needs a TINY bit more

Re: Accessible Sound Design - First Lesson Up, Interaction Ending 13/4

@169 I'm really glad you said that - that's exactly what we want to accomplish here.I respect that a lot of you have a working knowledge of this stuff so you can tinker and achieve what you want. What I want to achieve for you is that you can be sitting on your couch, building a sound effect in your head, thinking "Okay I need a blunt weapon attack. That will start with a short whooshy swing, maybe with a bit of the mids raised 3db or so and the highs nice and swishy, and for an impact I'll find or record punching a ham, maybe even with a very short bass drum sweetener with all the highs EQ'd out, and I might also add a nice snapping celery stalk that I record or find online, with lots of crunchy transients to simulate bone breaking. I might even find a nice squishing fruit sound, like a tomato, to add to give it just a tiny bit more authenticity. I'll compress everything on the impact sound with a sharp knee and parallel compression filter and EQ as needed."The better you get at this stuff the more of the work is done in your head, as opposed to tweaking and discovering. It will soon switch from discovery to planning and executing.

@178You are searching Freesounds for three categories, a sound in each: 1. WhooshThe sound when the spell is coming towards its target or is building up2. ImpactThe sound of the spell hitting the target3. FlavourThe type of spell - ice, fire, wind, lightning, whateverSo you need to search freesounds for one good, usable sound from each category then line them up with , and . using three different tracks and layering the sounds on top of each other. Does that make any more sense?

@176 I do have a Paypal and Patreon, I won't link them directly though. This course is being put on by myself and by Ebon Sky Studios because we're looking to really show the community that we're interested in raising the quality of audiogames in multiple facets: this course, the Sable engine, and just bringing people together to make great accessible games. I worry that message will lose a lot of its power if we add finances and donations to it. If you're really interested please message me, and thank you - I do appreciate what you're saying. It means a lot, to know that this course is valuable enough for people to want to pay for it. Thank you for that, Che.

So this course will do me a lot of good in better understanding what's really going on under the hood.I did a lot of searching on YouTube a while back about how to get a radio kind of effect, so I kind of already had the idea of how to do it.I've also done some work in plosive and sibilance reduction. But most of what I know is just me being persistent and not being happy until I get the effect I want.

No, the media needs to be there too. That's why I talk about what to check in the save dialog using object nav or jaws cursor. I mean technically, he has it so he could put it there, but then, that's not generally how you ship projects, you ship them with the media, and if you set things up as I described, it will be done for you when you save.

Re: Accessible Sound Design - First Lesson Up, Interaction Ending 13/4

The first and fourth band are set to low and high shelf respectively. You will have to change them to band. I usually end up deleting them all so there is one band, then adding more as I need them. Anyway, it's an EQ, so set the frequency around which the band is to be centered, then changes to the gain will have the effect you desire. Changes to the bandwidth will adjust the size of the chunk of frequencies surrounding the center frequency you selected. So, when it's lower, you're either boosting or attenuating by a smaller chunk.A lot of people seem to have this issue, so let me try to explain what this thing is actually doing. If you've ever used a mixer, which I know a lot of y'all have, you'll no doubt have seen the EQ section. Normally it's like 3 or 5 band, unless you have a really professional board. When you turn on the EQ, you then can move those bands up and down. Each band represents a frequency range, but you can't change them. So, imagine in reaper that you have this same setup, except you actually can change the frequencies each band operates on. It's letting you sort of build your own EQ. To tie the analogy to the practical work we're doing, imagine that you set up each of those 4 bands. Each band is set to type band in that combobox, and the gain and bandwidth are untouched. You set the first frequency to 60Hz, the second to 200, the third to 1,000, and the fourth to maybe 6,500. Now, switch to band 1 and mess with the gain, what you're doing is moving that fader on the EQ on the imaginary mixer I'm using at a metaphorical device. So, you can switch to each band, and play with the gain, and this is the same as if you just went over to that mixer, and  moved each one of the faders. The other stuff in ReaEQ just lets you customize the way the EQ works. You get to tune each one of those faders to something that works for your situation. No ambiguous labels like bass, mid, treble.I hope that helps to sort of build a mental image about how this is working. Bandwidth and frequency are just tools to set up the faders on your virtual EQ the way you like, and gain is you moving those actual faders. This isn't a filter, where sweeping the frequency range will produce results in the same way. You might hear changes if you have a very high level of gain added or cut out, but it will be harder to hear if you're only working in increments like +3dB or -3dB.

Re: Accessible Sound Design - First Lesson Up, Interaction Ending 13/4

So I have Reaper running, I have been using it for several days now, learning the ins and outs. I inserted Brian's audio track for assignment 1, it plays fine. When I go to add EQ, the only option I have under the EQ folder is ReaEQ, I have adjusted several parameters in there, with no change to the audio. I can put other effects on there such as reverb with no problems. I looked at all parameters that are labeled for ReaEQ, and everything seems to be in order. Although there are a few buttons in there that aren't labele, so I'm thinking I'm not seeing something important.Any ideas why this isn't affecting the audio? Also, is this the EQ you guys are using, or am I missing something? I have 4 bands in there, and I've tried adjusting them all, as well as the overall gain, but nothing. Any help greatly appreciated. If anyone has any help for my previous comment, that would be appreciated as well.

Re: Accessible Sound Design - First Lesson Up, Interaction Ending 13/4

@136Radio sounds great - you used a high pass filter. This is something we need to address in the next lesson: high pass filters create dB bumps on the frequencies next to them. Meaning, a high pass filter (letting only mid and high frequencies pass through) might be set at 50dB, but around 80dB it's going to give +3 or even +6dB higher than what it currently is. You can get around this by making your band width smaller. I recommend everyone reading this to check this file out and hear what I mean - it sounds like an old broken radio from the 1930s which is great for this assignment, but this will be an unwanted side effect in the future!Underwater sound is great.Check your "third one" optimisation: here you have a 20dB gain on band 1, which is set as a high shelf. I think this must be an error because this isn't what I recommended and you're entering dangerous volume territory. Please check out what I wrote in the post and try again. The fourth one is great - you removed all the wind sound and kept in the leaves moving in the trees. Well done!

@137Absolutely, jump on in! To anyone thinking of joining: each assignment will stay up forever. If you want to join us, I recommend you do them in order. If there are a lot of late joiners I won't be able to give feedback on assignments that are not current. It's going to be really hard for me to be doing a lot of different assignment types so each lesson will be interactive for about 2 weeks. After that, you are free to join us still but I won't be giving feedback on old assignments.

@134 Static in the radio sounds great. Did you also distort the original file? It works with the radio aesthetic, nice work. Underwater sounds good - I like the added effects. You clearly know your way around the program.Optimisation is great. If you listen, I didn't try to cover up my P sounds at all. If you wanted to bring your band 1 up to 100Hz, it might help cover up the Ps even better.Your wind removal is perfect.Great work with these ones!

Re: Accessible Sound Design - First Lesson Up, Interaction Ending 13/4

@133Excellent radio sound. You were nice and aggressive with your gain, sitting right at -60dB. Love it.Excellent underwater. I wouldn't change a thing, very well done. Optimisation is good - you used a high pass filter on band 1. Did you intend this? If so, it was a good choice - we'll be working with these next lesson. BUT this is something important: high pass filters in reaper need to have a bandwidth of 1 or more. For some reason it causes a dB bump in the frequencies next to your band 1 meaning you put band 1 right at 72.5Hz, which is perfect, but because the band width was thin (which is good with band type bands, and not as good with high and low pass) it caused a 3dB bump around 90 Hz. This is not your fault - this information is NOT transmitted through the data of the filter properly. This is not great accessibility but now that we know it's there, we can fix it and stay aware of it.You can hear it, even if I didn't tell you all of that, in my P sounds. They're accentuated because of that little bump. Great work but that high pass filter, which again is standard operating procedure in the audio world, messed you up just a tiny bit because it isn't as accessible as it needs to be. Your band 3 is very, very wide - it's dampening frequencies from 150Hz all the way up to 3,000Hz. Bring that width down to 1 or less, and bring the frequency down to about 200. Your band 2 is set as a low shelf. I think it might work better as a band and put at +3dB instead of -3dB. Good frequency placement though. Great work in your wind removal.

@131Outstanding voice optimisation. Your 2nd band is good, but it's a bit wide and that's causing my consonants to stick out just slightly more than they should. Band 2 bandwidth is at 1, try it around .35 and see if you like that better.

@130Radio is excellent. You're right, underwater is slightly lacking but it proves that you got the point of what we were trying to do - especially if you recognise yourself that it's not quite there. You needed to go slightly higher in your band frequency - you were at around 1200, and somewhere like 3000 would've worked a bit better at the band width you chose. Did you have a try at the wind removal assignment?

Re: Accessible Sound Design - First Lesson Up, Interaction Ending 13/4

@129Radio is PERFECT - one of, if not the best in the groupUnderwater is good, but on the radio you were really aggressive with cutting out those lower ones and you didn't bring that same level of removal to the highs for the underwater sound - try increasing your band width, or raising the frequency of the band, or lower the volume to -50dB. How did you find the inherent mic noise? Really cool work there - it sounds like it's in the higher range of the male voice, around 200hz maybe? Whenever I have a new mic I always have to find noise the old fashioned way - record a "room tone" and poke around in the EQ, raising a very thin band about 5dB and moving it up and down to emphasise the noise. This will be the next lesson. Excellent work. Did you manage to try out the wind noise removal? In the future, I'm not going to post answers until about 3-4 days after the initial post. I had to set you guys up with some good starting points in this first one so I really had to give you what you needed to get going.

https://onedrive.live.com/?authkey=%21A … ion=locateI hope that link works. Never used OneDrive.I thought I'd add some static to the radio one. I didn't get it quite to my liking, but it's functional. I've done it better before. I just can't remember how.I also added some extra effects to the underwater one to give it that underwater quality where the sound kind of moves with the motion of the water. It could use some ambient water sloshing and bubbling sounds but I don't know how to do that, aside from just finding a loop of it and adding it that way.I think I got rid of the wind you were talking about--the breeze that hits the mic directly. I tried to keep the insect noises intact so I had to fine tune things a bit. There's still the ambient breeze sounds but I can't touch those without taking too much else out.

Re: Accessible Sound Design - First Lesson Up, Interaction Ending 13/4

Ah crap I didn't realize I wasn't supposed to render, but it's so obvious now why. :-(I remember I used two bands for the radio and the underwater both. I think Radio was like 105hz and 212hz, with inf gain on the lower band and -55 on the upper one? Either that or the other way around... I don't remember my bandwidths unfortunately but I know that one of them was about 5.  I also committed the sin of raising the output gain above 0 (I think it's at like 5) but I was careful at least and took your advice with setting the Reaper volume to 50% of full. For under water I forget my upper band's HZ sadly, it was like 6k I think? But I know my lower band was 20HZ and 1.96 width.Anyway, here are my things from lesson one. still need to optimize your voice, but since you basically told us how I figured I may as well just do it to see how it works and leave it at that.I did how ever figure out how to make the internal resonance of your microphone come out, which is pretty neat, like revealing secrets in the sound that I didn't even notice were there!https://cp.sync.com/dl/fac64c5a0/pkn78z … r-vnhk9iipAs for the dropbox problem, their are a few options. As you can see I use : sync.com, which gives you 7GB free if you use the link I provided and complete the simple tutorial. It's very accessible but doesn't work well with Safari.Google Drive is another good option that people use, and you get 15GB free though it's shared with all your emails and phone storage if you have an Android hooked up to the cloud.Yandex disk seems pretty popular as well and you get plenty of storage, but I don't like all the unlabeled controls.I'm excited to learn about EQ because I've been doing what you mentioned in the lesson and finding Freesound stuff for god knows how long now (I have over a thousand sounds and 200 packs downloaded so far) so this will hopefully help me save some of the ones that are almost but not quite usable.I've got a collection I've been working on my self for the community right here...https://forum.audiogames.net/topic/26628/I hope at some point we can cover proper attribution and how to add metadata to your own sounds as well, but that may be outside the bounds of the course.Oh and, hopefully in future you could put a spoiler tag or something in front of the answers? because now I'm gonna have that in my head while trying to do it and subconsciously know I'm doing worse or better based on my settings.

Ah crap I didn't realize I wasn't supposed to render, but it's so obvious now why. :-(Anyway, here are my things from lesson one. still need to optimize your voice, but since you basically told us how I figured I may as well just do it to see how it works and leave it at that.I did how ever figure out how to make the internal resonance of your microphone come out, which is pretty neat, like revealing secrets in the sound that I didn't even notice were there!https://cp.sync.com/dl/fac64c5a0/pkn78z … r-vnhk9iipAs for the dropbox problem, their are a few options. As you can see I use : sync.com, which gives you 7GB free if you use the link I provided and complete the simple tutorial. It's very accessible but doesn't work well with Safari.Google Drive is another good option that people use, and you get 15GB free though it's shared with all your emails and phone storage if you have an Android hooked up to the cloud.Yandex disk seems pretty popular as well and you get plenty of storage, but I don't like all the unlabeled controls.I'm excited to learn about EQ because I've been doing what you mentioned in the lesson and finding Freesound stuff for god knows how long now (I have over a thousand sounds and 200 packs downloaded so far) so this will hopefully help me save some of the ones that are almost but not quite usable.I've got a collection I've been working on my self for the community right here...https://forum.audiogames.net/topic/26628/I hope at some point we can cover proper attribution and how to add metadata to your own sounds as well, but that may be outside the bounds of the course.

Or what would you say helps next to the course learning how reaper works.Greetings Moritz.

Re: Accessible Sound Design - First Lesson Up, Interaction Ending 13/4

@116 All tracks play at once by default. If you don't want that behavior, select a track and press F6 on it to solo it, which means only it will play. You can solo multiple tracks, so in a 5 track project, you could solo 1 and 3 and only those two would play, control F5 clears all solos and returns everything to playing. F5 can be used to mute a track. Muting is sort of the inverse as it will only mute the track you say, not everything else but that track.Whenever you import a media file into reaper, it puts the cursor at the end of it. So first, hit w, or control home to go to the start of the project, then you can use the arrows to scrub. If you hear things but its too slow to be useful, hit - (minus), if its too fast, hit + (plus). These are on the main row and I guess I should say hit equals because technically plus does something different which I won't mention here because its not important.@117 You would do that through the render dialog, which you can get through control alt R. However, the thing is, if you do that, then your work cannot be checked. I think the assignments are supposed to be uploaded in project form, so the instructor can go into your project and look at your settings. You can hit control S to do that. now, my thing is, I have specific paths set up under preferences. I don't remember what reaper does with stuff without having done that. You'll need the .rpp and the original media, which is why I recommend going into preferences with control P, finding the tree view usually with shift tab, then hitting home, making sure General is expanded, then going down to paths. If you create an initial Reaper directory somewhere on your HDD, then fill in all those paths as subdirectories of the main directory, your life will get a whole... lot... easier. Also in Windows, you will have to create the folder structure yourself, Reaper will complain about the path not existing when it tries to use it, so create the folder structure yourself, then fill all that into Reaper. The other thing I would recommend doing is when you hit control S to save, there are options that you don't see in the tab order, so you need to use object nav or jaws cursor to get to them. The best way I've found to start is to tab to the file type then hit NVDA numpad 6. Depending on what version of Reaper you have, that may enter you into the checkboxes, or, like me, you have to use NVDA numpad 2 to drop into the next grouping, then use NVDA 4 and 6 to access that stuff. Let me see what I have checked, because there are a few options that will help you. Especially convert media, which will make the internet gods love you, because uploading everything as .wav is huge. Create subdirectory for project, oh yes, yes yes yes, do this, definitely do this, believe me, it'll make your life so much easier when you have to zip the thing up. Copy media into project directory using... Again, all the yes. Then convert media, check that, then the convert button, I'd select flac, just because it's lossless but still smaller than wave., then you can leave the rest of it be. I'd then save, and if you did everything I outlined here, you'll have a nice, organized folder structure where everything is easy to find and new projects will get their own subdirectory with their own media copied in for you.

@109 that is a bug and I get it too, just don't go much below -60dB.@110 What I do is this, just hit control R before you press F to enter the effects dialog, then inside it, you can hit space as needed to play or stop it. I made a post further up explaining how to do time selection which I used in the second assignment to listen to just the wind parts. Control R puts it on repeat.

@109If you find the right frequency, .15 would be enough to cut out the low rumbling sounds. If you listen to them - they don't change in pitch (highness or lowness) at all. It's all the same low tone which means we don't need a wide filter at all. Try placing a .15 band, -40dB at around 50 or 60Hz.

Re: Accessible Sound Design - First Lesson Up, Interaction Ending 13/4

@108 I'll work on my voice being louder next time. I'm not at home - at home I have some nice monitors but I'm now staying with my parents for a visit for a few weeks as I live on the other side of the world. Anyway the point is, I'm using gear I'm not used to. That problem will fix itself next video. It sounds like your band is too wide - it's cutting out a lot more frequencies than we need. Have you tried a band that is very thin, like .15? I'd say that's where you want to start. You would probably want to download some static noise and overlay it on top of my voice in another track. Freesound will have some.We could generate some but that will be in a future lesson and I don't know how to do it with Reaper. But the process would be to find a tone generator, set it to white or pink noise and bring the volume to barely audible, it'll add some nice textures. We would also need to automate the volume so it isn't just playing full bore all the time. Yes, upload your saved project so I can get in there and dig around, checking what you did. Cheers!

Re: Accessible Sound Design - First Lesson Up, Interaction Ending 13/4

@101, Thank you.I see what you mean with the radio. One thing I am generally confused about is that if you go below -60dB on band gain, it will not have any effect on the track, even though you technically can go further down. I've tried setting the general output above 0, just for testing purposes, so I could see if decreasing the band gain by more than 60 would have an effect then, but it didn't. I'm wondering why you'd be able to go further down if it doesn't change anything.Regarding the underwater assignment, I thought we were limited to frequencies between 20 and 2000 HZ as instructed in post 79. I totally get why setting it to 6000 would be a better choice though. As for removing the wind, I believe .15 is not enough to do the trick, at least not with how I have set up the other sliders and you did mention a limit of .2 as well. I found .65 to be a suitable option, but I could still hear a low rumbling sound as the track was progressing further.@ironcross32, oh he did mention a high pass filter to cut everything below 60 HZ for the optimized voice, so you did comply with the instructions.

Perhaps I have something wrong, or maybe I didn't get something, but when I try to change the recording or at least your voice to sound more radioish it does work, but the volume of the recording goes down too. I.E -30 db gain? to -60db, the voice sounds more and more as if its  coming out of a radio but the voice's volume is lowered so much that you can hardly heare anything. Is there' something I could do to fix it? Slightly curious, although we may learn this in the future, how would I give your voice bits of statics just like you would on a radio? not a very clear one to be sure Lastly, I am really new to reaper so I apologise for dum or questions with obvious answers, but to submit my assignment, do I just save project and upload it to dropbox as is?Grryf
